Expelling Jerusalem’s Palestinians, One House at a Time
By Joharah Baker for MIFTAH
There are some people whose faces betray the difficulties they have encountered throughout their lives. Salah Shweiki is one of them. Sitting under the large tent set up in Silwan’s Bustan Quarter, seeking warmth from the wood burning in an old wheelbarrow, Shweiki emanates the aura of an elderly sage. In his 56 years of life, he has seen a lot, maybe too much, but today, he is focused, his face determined and his will iron solid. Salah Shweiki is one of approximately 1,500 people who are being threatened with expulsion from their homes by the Israeli Jerusalem municipality. According to the eviction order distributed among the residents of the Bustan neighborhood, the demolitions are being carried out under the pretext of lack of proper licensing. Once the homes are torn down, Israel plans to construct a national park in its place, a park, its archeological experts say, is part of the ancient City of David…

‘Donors’ complicit in the Gaza massacre
Gaza; Peace n’ Freedom
Perhaps not directly, but indirectly it is the willingness of the international community to finance ‘reconstruction’ of Gaza which allows Israel to continue its killings and massacres with impunity. In some cases, European taxpayer-funded project have been rebuilt three times in the past ten years, every time Israel destroys, EU opens its pockets to pay for the destruction. There is a clear division of labour established, Israel bombs, EU/USA rebuilds. For the Palestinians ‘reconstruction’ becomes a Sisyphean task. For Israel, ‘reconstruction’ becomes an indirect subsidy in case building materials are bought on the Israeli market…

It’s Obama’s War, Now
Chris Hedges
Barack Obama has shown that he is as capable of doublespeak as any other politician when he announced an end to the war in Iraq. Combat troops are to be pulled out of Iraq by August 2010, he said, but some 50,000 occupation troops will remain behind. Someone should let the Iraqis know the distinction. I doubt any soldier or Marine in Iraq will notice much difference in 19 months. Many combat units will simply be relabeled as noncombat units. And what about our small army of well-paid contractors and mercenaries? Will Dyncorp, Bechtel, Blackwater (which recently changed its name to Xe), all of whom have made fortunes off the war, pack up and go home? What about the three large super-bases, dozens of smaller military outposts and our imperial city, the Green Zone? Will American corporations give up their lucrative control of Iraqi oil? The occupation of Iraq will not be disrupted. Lies and deception, which launched the war in the first place, are being employed by Democrats to maintain it. This is not a withdrawal. It is occupation lite… Iraq, because of our invasion and occupation, no longer exists as a unified country…

Email to Guardian’s Martin Chulov on Iraq
Gabriele Zamparini
It seems your newspaper, the Guardian, restarted a campaign to deny the Iraq genocide, re-write history and sell the public the official baloney, also known as propaganda. A few days ago, Ewen MacAskill, the Guardian’s Washington DC bureau chief, wrote, “For Iraq, the death toll is unknown, in the tens of thousands…” Today, Martin.Chulov from Iraq wrote, “Tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians have been killed during the insurgency.”… The US-UK military must be really grateful of your help in re-writing history, no question about that. What you call “the insurgency” has been in the real world a war of aggression, which means illegal under international law; the same supreme international crime the top Nazi war criminals were hanged in Nuremberg for. About the “tens of thousands”: A few weeks ago the Nation published: Iraq’s Shocking Human Toll: About 1 Million Killed, 4.5 Million Displaced, 1-2 Million Widows, 5 Million Orphans…

Israel plans to double West Bank settlers
Marius Schattner, AFP
Israel’s housing ministry has plans for West Bank construction that would nearly double the number of settlers in the occupied territory, the anti-settlement group Peace Now said on Monday. The group gave the estimate in research issued on the day that US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is due to visit to Israel on her first trip to the region since taking office. US President Barack Obama has vowed to vigorously pursue peace efforts in the region, and Israeli settlements on occupied land have long been one of the main obstacles to an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal…

Civilians increasingly at risk in Afghanistan
International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)
… For the past three years the ICRC has repeatedly drawn attention to the increasingly severe impact of the conflict on the civilian population. Never, however, has our concern been as acute as it is now. The conflict is intensifying and affecting wider parts of Afghanistan. Civilian casualties are significantly higher than a year ago…

A Banana Republic by 2012?
Obama’s Budget
PAUL CRAIG ROBERTS
President Obama has presented the most irresponsible budget in US history. His fiscal year 2010 budget projects federal spending of $3.5 trillion and a federal deficit of $1.75 trillion. In other words, 50 percent of the government’s budget consists of red ink. And Americans are angry that sub-prime borrowers took mortgages they couldn’t afford. The bald fact is that the US government is going to have to borrow — or print — half of the money it intends to spend in Obama’s first budget…

Israelis Are Beginning to See the Power of BDS
Shir Hever, Alternative Information Center (AIC)
In recent years, there has been a gradual growth in the BDS (boycott, divestment and sanctions) movement, calling to put economic pressure on Israel until it recognizes the rights of the occupied Palestinian people and puts an end the occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The Israeli attack on the Gaza Strip, starting on 27 December 2008, which lasted for nearly a month, has given this movement a powerful reason to redouble its efforts. Dozens of BDS campaigns have gained momentum and publicity; dozens of new ones were launched during or immediately after Israel’s attack on the Gaza Strip…

Obama Expands War, Slaps Peace Voters
Jack A. Smith
The Obama Administration has engineered a triple setback for the U.S. peace movement and the millions of Americans who opposed the Bush Administration’s unjust, illegal, immoral wars. In the last two weeks of February, President Barack Obama — upon whom so many peace supporters had counted to change Washington’s commitment to wars and militarism — delivered these three blows to his antiwar constituency: 1. By ordering 17,000 more U.S. troops to Afghanistan Feb. 17, President Obama is continuing and expanding George W. Bush’s war. It’s Obama’s war now, and it’s getting much bigger.2. By declaring Feb. 27 that up to 50,000 U.S. soldiers would remain in Iraq after “combat brigades” departed, President Obama is continuing the war in a country that remains a tragic victim of the Bush Administration’s aggression and which has taken the lives of over a million Iraqi civilians and has made refugees of 4.5 million people. 3. By announcing Feb. 26 that his projected 2010 Pentagon budget was to be even higher than budgets sought by the Bush Administration, President Obama was signaling that his commitment to the U.S. bloated war machine — even at a time of serious economic recession — was not to be questioned..

With Iraq plan, Obama embraces US militarism
Patrick Martin, WSWS
In extending the full-scale US occupation of Iraq for another 18 months, and acceding to the timetable already adopted by the Bush administration for a tentative pullout by the end of 2011, President Barack Obama has done more than betray the hopes of the millions of antiwar voters who supported his candidacy in 2008. He has fully identified the incoming Democratic Party administration with the fraudulent arguments employed by the Bush White House to justify the ongoing war in Iraq, after its initial claims about “weapons of mass destruction” and ties between Iraq and the 9/11 terrorist attacks had been proven to be lies…

23 Palestinians killed in February
Saed Bannoura – IMEM
The International Solidarity for Human Rights reported on Sunday that the Israeli army carried out repeated violations in the occupied territories in February and killed 23 Palestinians including four children and three women. Eighteen residents died in the Gaza Strip, most of them from wounds sustained during the latest Israeli offensive, while five residents were killed in the West Bank. The ISHR stated that the army increased its attacks against the Palestinian territories, and kidnapped more than 300 residents including dozens of children and a number of women…

The pasta, paper and hearing aids that could threaten Israeli security
Anne Penketh, Independent
Members of the highest-ranking American delegation to tour Gaza were shocked to discover that the Israeli blockade against the Hamas-ruled territory included such food staples as lentils, macaroni and tomato paste. “When have lentil bombs been going off lately? Is someone going to kill you with a piece of macaroni?” asked Congressman Brian Laird. It was only after Senator John Kerry, the head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, raised the issue with Defence Minister Ehud Barak after their trip last month that Israel allowed the pasta in. Macaroni was considered a luxury item, not a humanitarian necessity, they were told…

AlJazeeraEnglish

Israel may face war crimes trials over Gaza
Peter Beaumont, Guardian
The international criminal court is considering whether the Palestinian Authority is “enough like a state” for it to bring a case alleging that Israeli troops committed war crimes in the recent assault on Gaza. The deliberations would potentially open the way to putting Israeli military commanders in the dock at The Hague over the campaign, which claimed more than 1,300 lives, and set an important precedent for the court over what cases it can hear…

ZIONISM: A BLIGHT ON THE JEWISH PEOPLE
Desertpeace
Throughout the world this week, on campuses in every major city, Israeli Apartheid is being exposed via exhibits and mass gatherings. Apartheid is not the only blight facing the Jewish people… zionism itself is a blight… an ongoing one. This week also commemorates the fifteenth anniversary of the slaughter of 30 Palestinians in the city of Hebron. The murderer has a tomb just outside the city in a settlement known as Kiryat Arba. This area is home to the most vicious elements among the settlers. Flowers will be placed on the tomb by his followers, he will be remembered as a hero among these beasts. The victims must be remembered. They are the true heros. Their martyrdom must serve as the stimulus to end the occupation and the dismantling of the illegal settlements on Palestinian land…

Alter Info Communiqué – Never will the police have spies comparable to those who serve hate
Mary Rizzo, Palestine Think Tank
Since its first days, Palestine Think Tank has been supported by a wonderful site and by the truly dedicated activists there. Alter Info has been under a lot of pressure from the usual Israeli Lobby organisations, this time in France. We wish to express our support of Alter Info, to hope that they are able to win this case, and that some benefactors are able to help them with the growing legal costs. Please read their press communiqué and, if you are able to, show your support of those who provide information so that the lies and propaganda will not win, and that peace and justice will prevail…

Gilad Atzmon: The Ornithologist
Jazzwise feature article by Andy Robson
This artist, this philosopher, Gilad Atzmon, watched the world outside him: stark TV images of death and destruction in Gaza. He did his best to absorb it. And failed. He flicked off the screen and was silent. Gilad Atzmon finds it hard to be silent. “We always thought if they came with tanks to kill children we would stop them. They do that now and we can’t stop them. These are hard questions and I do not know the answer.”..
