Gaza: Death’s Laboratory
Conn Hallinan, Foreign Policy In Focus
Erik Fosse, a Norwegian cardiologist, worked in Gaza hospitals during the recent war.”It was as if they had stepped on a mine,” he says of certain Palestinian patients he treated. “But there was no shrapnel in the wound. Some had lost their legs. It looked as though they had been sliced off. I have been to war zones for 30 years, but I have never seen such injuries before.” Dr. Fosse was describing the effects of a U.S. “focused lethality” weapon that minimizes explosive damage to structures while inflicting catastrophic wounds on its victims. But where did the Israelis get this weapon? And was their widespread use in the attack on Gaza a field test for a new generation of explosives?…

War in Afghanistan ‘could be lost by summer’
Alex Spillius, Telegraph
The assessment of Col John Nagl, who is consulting the US government as it conducts four separate policy reviews on Afghanistan, comes amid fears that unless the insurgents’ advance is halted, Afghanistan will become the new president’s Vietnam. Adm Mullen has said he expected to announce the deployment of a further 30,000 US troops soon, even though the Obama administration is waiting to evaluate the reviews…

Obama’s “War on Terror”
Stephen Lendman
The language is softened and deceptive. The strategy and tactics are not. The “war on terror” continues. Promised change is talk, not policy. Just look at Obama’s “war cabinet,” discussed in an earlier article. It assures: — the “strongest military on the planet” by outspending all other countries combined; — continued foreign wars…

Children In Gaza Left Without Textbooks As Paper Restriction Continues –UN
Press Release: United Nations
The United Nations agency tasked with assisting Palestinian refugees has distributed notebooks to 11 schools in Gaza over the past week, but has halted further distribution since it has not been able to import any additional notebooks. The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) added that it has still not received permission to import the necessary paper to print the remainder of its textbooks, leaving 60 per cent of children without textbooks. John Ging, UNRWA’s Director of Operations in Gaza, voiced exasperation last week at not being able to get paper into the area, some three weeks after Israel ended its devastating offensive against Hamas with the stated aim of stopping rocket attacks against it. “It’s really beyond comprehension,” he stated, adding that this “shameful” situation was the result of politics…

Church of England: Dumping Caterpillar
Stuart Littlewood
God whispered in the Church of England’s ear and it dumped its shares in Caterpillar. This House of God had about £2.5m invested in a company that manufactures one of Israel’s weapons of mass misery and destruction. After saying for years that they couldn’t see anything unethical about it, Church bosses finally agreed with the rest of us that Caterpillar’s D-9 bulldozer, which is used in the Holy Land for the ugly purpose of demolishing Palestinian homes, uprooting olive groves and destroying civilian infrastructure, is more like a vicious weapon in Israel’s hands than a civil engineering tool. Caterpillar simply didn’t look good on the Church’s ethical investments list any more. The wholesale destruction of Palestinian homes, and Caterpillar’s part in it, has been going on for a very long time…

Hunger Strikes Continue at Guantánamo
Robert Mackey, NYTimes
A United States military lawyer representing one of the 242 detainees still imprisoned at Guantánamo Bay told a British newspaper on Sunday that, including her client, “at least 50 people are on hunger strike, with 20 on the critical list” at the detention center. The lawyer, Lt. Col. Yvonne Bradley of the Air Force, told The Observer, The Guardian’s Sunday newspaper, that her client, an Ethiopian-born Briton named Binyam Mohamed, is in danger of dying. The Observer adds, according to witnesses, the starving detainees “are being strapped to chairs and force-fed, with those who resist being beaten.” …

On Immobility
Layla Anwar, Uncensored Arabwomanblues
Was watching a program the other day, more of a discussion as to whether Saudi Women should be allowed to drive cars or not. Some idiot, representing Saudi Human rights was arguing that this “move” should be done gradually. When asked why – he responded that some national census showed that over 70% of Saudi society were against females driving and that one should go with the flow and take baby steps in change, a little at a time like maybe a 100 years down the line… Mind you in democratically occupied Iraq, women at some point, stopped driving too. It is only a few months ago that they dared venture in their cars again, but even then, they feel safer being accompanied by a male. Iraq has turned into a Shiite Saudi state !…

An-Najah University Poll on Hamas Popularity Fails Scrutiny
By Hiyam Noir in Gaza and Les Blough in Venezuela
A poll/survey was conducted in the West Bank and Gaza Strip by the Center for Opinion Polls and Survey Studies at Al-Najah National University on the first 2 days of February, 2009. The survey was conducted on a sample of 1,361 Palestinians who responded to a questionaire. The results showed that 57 percent of Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip believe that Hamas is stronger now than it was prior to the Israelis offensive in December and January, but there were many other questions in the questionaire that reveal a pro-Fatah, pro-Israel bias. Hiyam Noir (in Gaza) and Les Blough, Editor of Axis of Logic, decided to take a look closer look their survey…

Israel’s Subtle Propaganda Strategy
The Israel Lobby at Work
Dan Lieberman
Propaganda is most effective when subtly planted and the reader remains unaware that a commentary is actually indoctrination. Sometimes the writer is not cognizant that what he has published has been moved by its propaganda effect — sources for the material are actually misleading and publication is facilitated when the commentary fits a particular agenda. Two recent publications, a response by United States Senator Benjamin Cardin to an Amnesty International plea and an article in Newsweek magazine, “A Plan of Attack for Peace by Daniel Klaidman” (Jan. 12, 2009), demonstrate how far Israel’s supporters can reach to mislead the public.

Gaza 2009: Culture of resistance vs. defeat
Dr. Haidar Eid, The Electronic Intifada
The ongoing bloodletting in the Gaza Strip and the ability of the Palestinian people to creatively resist the might of the world’s fourth strongest army is being hotly debated by Palestinian political forces. The latest genocidal war which lasted 22 days, and in which apartheid Israel used F-16s, Apache helicopters, Merkava tanks and conventional and non-conventional weapons against the population, have raised many serious questions about the concept of resistance and whether the outcome of the war can, or cannot, be considered a victory for the Palestinian people. The same kind of questions were raised in 2006 when apartheid Israel launched its war against the Lebanese people and brutally killed more than 1,200 Lebanese…

Reform or Revolution?
William Bowles
…These are extremely dangerous times, the capitalist system is teetering on the edge of collapse and as it has done in the past, it will resort to whatever measures it needs to protect the interests of capital including the establishment of a police state. All the necessary legislation is in place to clamp down on any opposition. We have already seen the use of ‘anti-terror’ laws to clamp down on legitimate protest, this is in spite of all the claims of ‘New’ Labour that the vast array of laws would not be used to suppress ‘legitimate’ protest…

Iran says change under Obama would be “happy news”
Ahmed Rasheed, Reuters
Iran sent one of its warmest signals yet on Wednesday over prospects for improved relations with Washington, praising the election promises of President Barack Obama and declaring that change would be “happy news”. In a break from the policy of former President George W. Bush, Obama has said he is willing to start talks with Iran, which Washington accuses of supporting terrorism, meddling in Iraq and seeking nuclear weapons, all charges Tehran denies. “We look positively on the slogan that Obama raised in the elections. The world has really changed,” Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said through an Arabic interpreter at a news conference during a visit to neighbouring Iraq…
