A Short History of the Israeli – Palestinian Conflict: Past Is Prologue
Stephen Lendman
Its roots are from the late 19th century when Theodor Herzl founded modern Zionism at the First Zionist Congress in Basle, Switzerland in 1897. In his book “Overcoming Zionism,” Joel Kovel writes: Zionism seeks “the restoration of tribalism in the guise of a modern, highly militaralized and aggressive state. (It) cut Jews off from (their) history and led to a fateful identity of interests with antisemitism (becoming) the only thing that united them. (It) fell into the ways of imperialist expansion and militarism, and showed signs of the fascist malignancy.” If you accept “the idea of a Jewish state,” you mix its twin notions of “particularism (and) exceptionalism (that are) the actual bane of Judaism (and give) racism an objective, enduring, institutionalized and obdurate character.” It turns Israel “into a machine for the manufacture of human rights abuses,” and consider three of its former prime ministers. Menachem Begin (1977 – 83), Yitzhak Shamir (1983 – 84 and 1986 – 92), and Ariel Sharon (2001 – 06) were former terrorists who dispelled the illusion of Israeli democracy, morality, and respect for human rights. Kovel’s conclusion: “the world would be a far better place without (the corrosive effects of) Zionism…

Shame on you, old Europe!
Michael Warschawski, Alternative Information Center (AIC)
Shame on you old Europe, whose Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid (sic) Louis Michel, has the chutzpa to “recall, at this time, the overwhelming responsibility of Hamas” for the terrible conditions in which the Gaza residents are trying to survive. And Michel dares to add: “Public opinion is fed up to see that we are paying over and over again for infrastructure that will be systematically destroyed.” Who will destroy this infrastructure- Hamas?…

Memories of Gaza dead continue to haunt living
Bilal Badwan
Umm Ebrahim is only 40 years old, but her face looks old and expressionless. Gulf News spoke with her, recording her story as one of the many victims of Israel’s invasion of Gaza. “I have nothing in my mind except what has happened to me. I am a mother who collected her children in pieces. I will never forget these painful memories.” Her home in Jabaliya was destroyed during the invasion. Two relatives, her husband and five children were inside the home when it was hit by a missile…”My son Rakan was torn to pieces. No hands, no legs and even no face were left. I could not bring him to the hospital; the house was falling down around him and my husband,” she said…

Israel expels Palestinians and other countries are forced to deal with the refugees
IQBAL TAMIMI
Since the first minute the Zionists arrived in Palestine during the first half of the 1900s their policy was clear, it was to empty the land of its indigenous people and house immigrant Jews in their place. Almost 6 million Palestinians are now scattered all over the world as refugees since then, and hundreds of thousands were massacred and housed under the soil for resisting to abandon their home land…

Israeli University Welcomes ‘War Crimes’ Colonel
By Jonathan Cook – Nazareth
The Israeli government has moved quickly to quash protests over the appointment of the army’s senior adviser on international law to a teaching post at Tel Aviv University. Col Pnina Sharvit-Baruch is thought to have provided legal cover for war crimes during the recent Gaza offensive. Government officials fear that recent media revelations relating to Col Sharvit-Baruch’s role in the Gaza operation may assist human rights groups seeking to bring Israeli soldiers to trial abroad…

Tribal Authorities: Handing It Off to the Leader
Chris Floyd
…the Guardian today provides us with a striking example of political tribalism in action: an article by writer Anna Shapiro, in which the literal abandoment of the mind and will to the guidance of the Leader (in this case, Barack Obama) is openly celebrated. This is accompanied by a deep personal and emotional identification with the Leader, and a compulsive rejection of any and all criticism of his noble deeds; such negativity is derided as “manufactured controversy” engineered by the “jackal-like” media. Apparently, no right-thinking person (or right-feeling person, we should probably say) could possibly be troubled by, say, Obama’s retention of the leadership of Bush’s malevolent war machine; nor should any good person question the Leader’s “investigation into official standards regarding methods of interrogation.” We should eschew all “trumped-up criticism,” and put everything in Obama’s hands, because he’s “much smarter” than we are…

Still patting the Mad Dog?
STUART LITTLEWOOD
Martin van Creveld, a former professor of military history at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and a world-leading writer on military matters, has made many enemies with his seemingly outrageous views. But actually he does a great service by sharing his thoughts about what ‘mad dog’ Israeli might do next. In a September 2003 interview in Elsevier (the Dutch weekly) Van Creveld said: “We possess several hundred atomic warheads and rockets and can launch them at targets in all directions, perhaps even at Rome. Most European capitals are targets for our air force… We have the capability to take the world down with us. And I can assure you that that will happen before Israel goes under.” Van Creveld talked about ‘collective deportation’ as Israel’s only meaningful plan for the Palestinian people…

Beyond Posturing
End the Occupation First
SAM BAHOUR
…The Palestinian people have been on the receiving end of the US-armed-and-financed Israeli military machine for over 60 years. This latest chapter of Israeli-sponsored state terrorism has claimed over 1,300 Gazan lives, mostly civilians, in just three short weeks. A similar Israeli attack on America would have caused over 260,000 deaths: 92 times the loss of life witnessed from the 9/11 tragedy. Israel owes its existence to the United States. America’s vote was the key to establishing the self-proclaimed Jewish State…

Marwan Al Barghouti may be released, but Sa’adat blacklisted
PNN
Out of 11,000 Palestinian political prisoners are four that the Israelis refuse to release. As part of the Gaza negotiations, Egyptian mediators discussed the names Ahmed Sa’adat, Abbas Said, Ibrahim Hamid, Abdullah Barghouti and Marwan Al Barghouti in the exchange. Fateh leader Marwan Al Barghouti is reportedly among the strong possibilities to be released in an exchange for the captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit. The names and eventual reality often changes, but as of now the Israelis say they will not release Sa’adat, Said, A. Barghouti and Hamid. Ahmed Sa’adat is the Secretary General of the leftist Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine…

Fighter killed by Israeli warplane in Gaza, another dies of wounds
Rami Almeghari – IMEMC
Two Palestinian fighters were reportedly killed on Monday, including one who died of wounds he sustained during the last Israeli war on the Gaza Strip. Palestinian media sources reported that an Israeli air strike on northern Gaza left one fighter killed. Medics identified the fighter as Khaled Alkafarna, age 22, and added that the victim had been admitted to the Beit Hanoun hospital in northern Gaza Strip. Alkafarna was hit with a warplane missile . AN APPEAL TO PALESTINIANS IN ISRAEL TO VOTE IN THE ELECTION
Desertpeace
As in past, there is a movement of Palestinians living in Israel to boycott the elections that will take place tomorrow. At this time nothing could be more dangerous. Dahr Jamail, t r u t h o u t | Perspective
Among things that have not changed in Iraq is one that I hope never changes. After a four-year-long absence, each of my meetings here with former friends and fresh acquaintances seems to suggest that adversity has taken its toll on everything except Iraqi hospitality and Iraqi generosity. I am awestruck to find the warmth of the Iraqi people miraculously undiminished through grief, loss and chaos. I first met A (name withheld) in 2004 during my second trip to Iraq. He had accompanied Sheikh Adnan, a mutual friend, when the latter came to visit me in Baghdad. Several visits had followed. The two men would come to my hotel laden with delicious home-cooked meals, of which the first morsel had to be eaten by me, as per their custom…

Erase My Grandfather’s Name from Yad Vashem
By Jean-Moïse Braitberg – Translated from the French by Aimée Kligman
…On the other hand, Mr. President, you steer the destiny of a country that claims not only to represent the global Jewish community, but also the memory of those that were victims of Nazism. And this is what concerns me and is unbearable for me. By keeping at Yad Vashem, in the heart of the Jewish State, the name of those close to me, your State holds prisoner the memory of my family behind the barbed wires of Zionism, and makes it hostage to a so-called moral authority that commits the abomination of denial of justice on a daily basis. Therefore, please, remove the name of my grandfather from the sanctuary dedicated to the cruelty imposed on the Jews so that it may not justify anymore that which is imposed on Palestinians. Please accept, Mr. President, the assurance of my respects…

Israel’s forgotten Palestinians
Ahmed El Amraoui
The rising mistrust of Israelis towards the Palestinian citizens of Israel raises the question of what will happen to the indigenous inhabitants of Palestine, who already suffer discrimination. While they used to make up the majority of the population of Palestine before the 1948 Arab-Israeli war, only 150,000 out of 950,000 native Palestinians remain within what is now known as the state of Israel. After this tragic war and the forced expulsion of the people – known by Arabs as al-Nakba, or the Catastrophe – Israeli forces occupied 213 villages and expelled more than 400,000 refugees before the British mandate ended on May 15, 1949…

Accusations of torture abound after Hamas member dies in PA prison
Ma’an news
Controversy mounted over the death of Hamas member Abd Aj-Jamil Al-Haj while in custody at a Palestinian Authority prison Sunday. Shortly after his death the Al-Haj family released a statement saying they held the PA responsible for the death of their son. A Palestinian security source would confirm the death of the 30-year-old, saying he died in a Palestinian Preventive Security Detention Center in the West Bank city of Jenin. The source, however, claimed that Al-Haj, who was arrested on Friday, committed suicide…
