How to Kill a Palestinian
Dr. Elias Akleh, thepeoplesvoice.org
Commenting on the latest Israeli one-directional onslaught against the Palestinians of Gaza Strip, the Israeli 10th TV channel has disclosed that the Israeli genocidal forces had used half of its air force and had launched at least 2500 air raids against Gaza Strip. The television military correspondent stated that the Israeli warplanes had dropped more than a thousand tons of explosives, including white phosphorous and DIME (Dense Inert Metal Explosive) bombs, during three weeks on the virtually unarmed densely populated 360 square Kilometers Strip. He added that the shells fired by tanks, artillery, gunboats, and infantry were not included in those fired by the air force…

Were chickens firing rockets?
Sameh A. Habeeb, B.A.
Israel’s devastating war on Gaza claimed the lives of more than 1,335 persons and left at least 5,500 other wounded. In addition tens of thousands of utilities, houses, businesses, and factories were partially or totally destroyed. The war caused psychological damage for thousands of people especially children. I reported on the war daily and my focus was on the human toll. However, I recently came across a story that changed my focus completely a revealed to me the true nature of Israel’s soldiers and their intent in invading Gaza. Since the ceasefire was enacted, I have toured throughout Gaza to document some stories and accounts. Although I wrote many articles, I decided to focus on the untold stories of the war: the brutal massacre of thousands of chickens…

Baghdad: A Capped Volcano of Suffering
Dahr Jamail
Baghdad today, on the eve of provincial elections, feels like it has emerged from several years of horrendous violence, but do not be misled. Every Iraqi I’ve spoken with feels it is tenuous, the still-fragile lull too young to trust. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees provides recent statistics showing that more Iraqis continue to flee their country than are returning. Two studies show the number of dead Iraqis to be between 1.2-1.4 million, and the number of those displaced to be nearly five million, or one in six Iraqis. During 2006 and 2008, scores of bodies were found on the streets of Baghdad and fished from the Tigris River as death squads and sectarian militias raged. All but one of my Iraqi friends and translators have either fled the country, or been killed. It is nearly impossible to meet a family that has not had a family member killed or wounded…

First evidence of damage to Gaza’s cultural sites emerges
Antiquities museum hit; fears grow for excavated archaeology
Lauren Gelfond Feldinger
After a 3,500-year history of invasions, the latest war on the beleaguered coastal strip of Gaza has once again put historic sites at risk. With the fragile ceasefire still in force, The Art Newspaper has learned that Gaza’s only museum has been damaged and other heritage sites and buildings may also be at risk. The Antiquities Museum of Gaza, privately founded and run by Gazan contractor and collector Jawdat Khoudary, was badly damaged during Israel’s 22 days of air and land strikes. The glass doors and windows have been shattered and the roof and walls have been damaged. Roman and Byzantine pottery, Islamic bronze objects and many amphorae have been destroyed, initially during shooting 20m to 200m away, and later because of nearby shelling, with one direct hit to the museum’s conference hall, Mr Khoudary said…

Zionism and the road to Gaza’s killing fields
George Anthony
…There it is, Zionism was never about religion but a conspiracy to create a gendarme state amongst the ‘unreliable’ indigenous Middle East states and to protect oil interests. This has been proclaimed consistently since the official foundation of the World Zionist Organisation in August 1897. Theodore Herzel writing to Cecil Rhodes, said, ‘I believe that the Zionist idea…is a colonial..idea’. That the Zionist programme in Palestine should ‘form a portion of a rampart of Europe against Asia’ and be ‘an outpost of civilisation as opposed to barbarism’…

Fact-Checking the Ceasefire Breaches
Killing Palestinians Doesn’t Count
ALISON WEIR
On January 27th media headlines trumpeted that Palestinians had broken the latest cease-fire: a bomb had killed one Israeli soldier and injured two or three. Virtually every media outlet reported this action as a major breach in the ceasefire that had begun on January 18th: CNN, AP, NPR, the New York Times, The Washington Post, Fox News, ABC, CBS, the Christian Science Monitor, the LA Times, the McClatchy Newspapers, etc, all pinned the resumption of violence on Palestinians. There’s just one problem. Israeli forces had already violated the ceasefire at least seven times: * Israeli forces killed a Palestinian farmer in Khuza’a east of Khan Yunis on Jan 18 * Israeli forces killed a Palestinian farmer east of Jabalia on Jan. 19 * Israeli naval gunboats shelled the Gaza coastline, causing damage to civilian structures…

Nahr al Barid
Arablinks
…When, on Jan 16, the government approved the plan for a naval base at Nahr al-Barid, it also issued a statement of solidarity with the people of Gaza, under attack from Israel. The people of Nahr al-Barid mentioned this in their petition, and they said maybe the government is not aware of the fact that the conditions they have imposed on Nahr al-Barid (not in so many words, admittedly) are very similar to the conditions Israel imposes on Gaza. The camp is surrounded by concrete walls with barbed wire (see map attached to the petition at the above link); there is a burdensome system of permits and one-by-one checkpoint-approval for anyone going in or exiting from the camp; the commercial life of the camp is strangled not only by the difficulty of getting in and out by residents, but also by the even greater difficulty of Lebanese neighbours getting in, something that makes any commercial enterprise in the camp economically impossible; not to mention social isolation; and so on…

Iraq’s election: An old wine in new bottles
Roads to Iraq
The title taken from Al-Akhbar’s very well written report, describes the recent election situation. The writer Zaid Al-Zubaidi noticed the absence of the “real” opposition, makes the election confined in the same frame appeared after 2003 [occupation], with some formal tweaks, enforced by the current situation…

The Drone War
Pakistan: a New Cambodia?
M. REZA PIRBAHI
Twenty-two people – 8 to 10 alleged Al-Qaeda and Taliban members, the rest civilians, including children – were killed on January 23, 2009, when Predator drones operated by the US Central Intelligence Agency fired missiles at houses in Pakistan’s ‘Federally Administered Tribal Areas.’ About 30 such missile attacks are on record since the summer of 2008, invariably directed at homes and schools in populated centers, rather than hide outs and bases in the wild. As a result, the total verifiable ratio of civilian to alleged combatant deaths to civilian deaths is approximately 1 in 4. As for the identities of the alleged combatants killed, both Pakistani and US media outlets have reported that, according to official US sources, ‘there were no immediate signs that the strikes had killed any senior Qaeda leaders.’ Only two differences between the latest attack and those conducted earlier can be noted: 1) this was the first incident under the presidency of Barack Obama, rather than George W. Bush; and, 2) this was the first occasion on which the US government publicly acknowledged the policy of missile strikes on the territory of its ‘ally,’ Pakistan…

Pro-Israel media: Bloggers join media war
Itamar Eichner, YNet
…Sharuz-Shalicar is one of the front-line soldiers in the Ministry of Absorption’s new “army of bloggers” that was recently established in cooperation with the Foreign Ministry’s public relations department following Operation Cast Lead in the Gaza Strip. The Absorption Ministry is recruiting new immigrants and Jews living abroad who have access to a computer and who speak a second language to a volunteer effort to improve public relations for Israel on the internet. The campaign was launched last week…

GI SPECIAL 7A15: Imperial Slaughterhouse Afghanistan: Obama Regime “Will Put More Emphasis On Waging War Than On Development, Senior Administration Officials Said”
U.S. Troops To “Focus On The Fight Against Insurgents”
Missile Attacks On Pakistan To Continue
Thomas F. Barton
…Mr. Obama is preparing to increase the number of American troops in Afghanistan over the next two years, perhaps to more than 60,000 from about 34,000 now. He outlined plans for an increase of about 12,000 troops by midsummer but cautioned that any decision on more troops beyond that might have to wait until late 2009, given the need for barracks and other infrastructure..

Boycott the BBC
Terry Lacey
The decision of the BBC to refuse to broadcast a humanitarian appeal for the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) made of up British NGOs working in the Gaza Strip to help the wounded and homeless of Gaza is one of the most craven acts of political and legal cowardice in the history of British television broadcasting. In all my years as General Secretary of War on Want, as Chairman of the International Broadcasting Trust, as Patron of the One World Broadcasting Trust, and as a member of the previous Educational Advisory Committee of the Independent Broadcasting Authority, I never came across such a huge political misjudgement as that made by Mark Thompson, the Director General of the BBC. He must resign or the damage to the Corporation will be cumulative and global…

Spain Probes Israelis for War Crimes
IslamOnline.net & News Agencies
A National Court of Spain judge on Thursday, January 29, named an Israeli minister and six high-ranking army commanders as suspects of committing crimes against humanity in the Gaza Stripe in 2002. “As a consequence of the explosion caused by the bomb, 15 people died, mostly children and babies, 150 people were injured – some of them severely,” Judge Fernando Andreu said in a ruling cited by the Aki new agency. On July 22, 200I, an Israeli F-16 dropped a one-ton bomb on the densely-populated al-Daraj neighborhood of Gaza city to assassinate Hamas leader Salah Shehade…

AP can’t stop lying for Israel
DetainThis
Here is just a sample of the latest pack of lies about Israel’s enemies published these last few days by “the world’s largest and most trusted source of independent news and information.” Here’s a lie you will see in every AP report about Israel’s invasion and carpet-bombing of Gaza — a supremely criminal aggression which was meant to terrorize the population and help remove the democratically-elected government of Hamas from power: Israel launched its 22-day offensive to try to halt Hamas rocket fire on southern Israel…

‘Terrorist state’ or not, Israel to sell drones to Turkey
By Zvi Bar’el, Haaretz
Turkey is expected to receive its first shipment of attack drones from Israel next month, despite the comments by its prime minister during the Gaza offensive that Israel was a terrorist state. Turkey is also expected to receive another shipment of Heron drones from Israel. According to Turkish sources and reports in the Turkish media, the predominantly Muslim country under Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to buy drones known as the Harpy. This armed UAV, developed by Elbit and Israel Aerospace Industries, participated in the Gaza offensive and killed Hamas militants…

The Devastation of Gaza: From Factories to Ice Cream
Tim McGirk, Times
Yaser Alwadeya wanders past a field strewn with the remnants of gaily painted ice cream carts, which were shredded by a blizzard of shrapnel. He enters the blackened innards of the Al Ameer factory, which once manufactured Gaza’s tastiest ice cream and popsicles. Shaking his head, he says, “I can’t figure out why the Israelis thought that Hamas had anything to do with ice cream.”..
