Doctors Document Gaza Horrors
Special for IslamOnline.net
A team of Arab doctors who rushed to the rescue of thousands of civilians injured during Israel’s 22-day onslaught against the sealed off Gaza Strip are coming back with heart-breaking stories of horror and never-seen-before injuries. “The destruction and death I saw in front of my bare eyes were unprecedented in human history,” Mohamed el-Sheriey, an Egyptian doctor, told a joint press conference on Sunday, January 25. “They couldn’t even be masterminded by the most evil-minded of fiction writers.”…Even to men whose profession taught them to come to term with death, the scenes were hard to comprehend. They saw people admitted to hospital with burnt organs and lacerated tissues or even without the lower half of their bodies. One of the victims – currently laying at the Egyptian Red Crescent Hospital in Cairo – received a wound in his right cheek. The wound, which was almost two inches big, continues to grow bigger and bigger by the hour. “When we shut off the light, the wound becomes luminous,” said Rashid Emam, a medical specialist from al-Azhar University…

Video: Cairo hospitals treat Gaza’s war-scarred children

More than 1,300 Palestinians were killed during Israel’s three week offensive, many of them women and children. Al Jazeera’s Amr El-Kahky has been to a hospital in Egypt, where doctors claim the wounds they are treating may have been caused by the use of white phosphorus. This package contains images that may disturb or offend some viewers…

Gazan officials say the Isareli attacks destroyed and damaged around 20,000 homes, leaving more than 100,000 people homeless. Al Jazeera’s Zeina Awad spent a day with one family now forced to live in the ruins of their old house.

Endless pain for Gaza burn victims
Marc Lourdes
MORE than a week after the ceasefire, the victims of white phosphorus attacks were still writhing in pain and agony. The Al-Sifa Hospital Burn Unit is filled with victims, mostly women, who have been scorched by the chemical. One of them is 16-year-old Samin El-Manayah. While most girls her age elsewhere in the world are worrying about boys, acne and exams, Samin has to deal with an excruciating pain after being doused in white phosphorus, as well as the knowledge that the long-term effects are going to be even worse…

‘Cancer within 10 months of attack’
New Straits Times
FOR the victims of white phosphorus attacks, the horrific burns are just the beginning of their problems. If past experiences are to be taken into account, those hit by the deadly chemical can expect to develop cancer within a year of the attack. Al-Sifa Hospital Burn Unit surgeon Dr Aladdin Ali said white phosphorus burns are different and worse from those incurred in normal fires. “Victims feel not only the burning sensation, but an unbearable itch, too. “The burns cover a huge area of the body, eat up the flesh and sink down to the bone. “It also affects other organs like the kidneys, and interferes with many bodily functions.”..

We will survive this latest Nakbah too
May A. Altoukhi | Arab News
…And I will teach my nieces to always hold their heads up high, simply because they are Palestinians. I will teach them to always stand strong, and never back down. I will teach them to always be proud. I will teach them to live, and to love, and to thrive simply because they are Palestinian. And, I will teach them that we will always survive, no matter what. So, listen up dear world. We survived the 1948 Nakbah, and we survived the 1967 war, and we survived the past 60 years of oppression, concentration camps, displacement, and murder, and we will survive this genocide, and we will never cease to exist…

What the World Economy Needs Now is Not Davos But New Alternatives
By Curtis F.J. Doebbler, Professor of Law, An-Najah National University, Nablus, Palestine
This week hundreds of business leaders and others interested in the world economy will flock to Davos, Switzerland—one of the most expensive cities in the world—to sip wine, smoke cigars, dine on exquisite cuisine and discuss the world economy. The Swiss government will host this meeting of the rich and powerful by canceling the human right to freedom of expression of anyone who wishes to demonstrate against the World Economic Forum whether peacefully or otherwise. The Swiss hosts will also vet anyone coming to make sure that they have the requisite cash to participate in this forum and are staying at one of the exclusive hotels or residences. Even people living in Davos have trouble moving around their city…

War is Politics: The Israeli Invasion of Gaza
William James Martin, Axis of Logic
…The effort to induce Israel to contract to the ’67 borders has been tried, for 41 years, in fact, and has failed. Israel is a “State for Jews”, according to its First Basic Law. (Israel does not have a constitution, but rather has what are known as “The Basic Laws of Israel”.) That means that the Palestinian minority living in the state may be tolerated as long as it remains a powerless minority and accepts the status of having inferior rights. Israel is a state that ethnically cleansed three quarters of a million indigenous Arabs in 1948 and which has for the last 41 years, maintained an entire ethnic population, the Palestinians, in the outdoor prison, otherwise called the “occupied territories”, deprived of basic human rights. Israel is a state whose founders clearly recognized that in order to create a state of European Jews in the heart of the Arab world, they must first get rid of the Arabs. This has been clearly documented by historical researches over the last twenty years or so. The destruction of the Palestinians has always been the heart of the Zionist project. For these reasons, and because of the constant killing and massacres of Palestinians, the latest instant of mass slaughter is occurring as I write this, the state of Israel has no moral right to exists. Israel needs to be replaced with a democratic egalitarian state which recognizes equal rights for all its citizens…

Israel acts to block war crimes charges
Jonathan Cook
Mounting fear in Israel that the country’s leaders face war crimes charges over their involvement in the recent Gaza offensive pushed officials into a frenzy of activity at the weekend to forestall legal actions abroad. The urgency was underlined after rumours last week that Belgian authorities might arrest Tzipi Livni, Israel’s foreign minister, if she attended a summit of European counterparts in Brussels on Wednesday. In an indication of how seriously the matter is judged, Ms Livni’s advisers were on the verge of cancelling her trip when the story was revealed to be a hoax…

When Exactly Did Israel Lose Its Soul?

In 2009? From 2000-2008? 1050 Palestinian Children Killed. In 1987 when the Prime Minister ordered Israeli soldiers to “break the bones” of Palestinian demonstrators? In 1982? Sabra and Chatila. In 1967? Approximately thirty-five percent of the Palestinian population of the West Bank, eastern Jerusalem, and Gaza Strip were expelled during the 1967 war. Or was it in 1956? Kafr Qasem massacre? Was it as early as 1948? When “more than 500 Palestinian villages were depopulated and later destroyed to prevent the return of the refugees”?…

FOR GAZA’S CHILDREN, THE WAY OF LIFE IS ACTUALLY THE WAY OF DEATH
Desertpeace
After an unexpected winter ‘vacation’, hundreds of thousands of children in Gaza returned to school yesterday. In some cases, the buildings were gone, completely destroyed by Israeli bombs. In most cases, classmates were missing, murdered by Israeli forces. Can any of you imagine the trauma of these children, many of whom lost close relatives, including parents, brothers or sisters? For decades, this has been a way of life for the people living in the Occupied Territories of Palestine, Gaza in particular. In other words, the way of life is the way of death. The scars inflicted on these children by those horrors will never heal… no form of therapy or counseling will alleviate the pain felt by these children… they will be forced to live with it their entire life…

Names and Photos of Israeli War Criminals in Gaza
Kawther Salam
I have decided to publish some names and photos of the Israeli military personnel who participated in the so-called “Operation Cast Lead”, the offensive launched by the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) on the Gaza Strip between 27 December and 18 January 2009. The names of these criminals called my attention since the first day of their criminal attack against the Palestinian civilians in Gaza. I consider each person who took part in this IOF and each one whose name appears in this report as a war criminal who should be requested by an international court of justice, just like all other war criminals who were persecuted before…

First Blood: Pictures From Life’s Other Side
Chris Floyd
Already, Gaza has faded from the front pages of the Western press. Already it is yesterday’s news, yesterday’s massacre, just another in a long, long, endless line of human debauchery. After all, the Western press, the Western establishments, indeed, Western popular opinion, have often countenanced — even championed — far worse atrocities. The establishments and power structures of most Arab nations are also hastening to forget, to downplay, to bury, once again, the suffering of the Palestinians, in the interests of political gamesmanship, both domestic and diplomatic. The reality of the actual human beings in Palestine who have been inflicted with horrific suffering matter no more than the reality of the human beings in Iraq, or Afghanistan, or Somalia, or Kurdistan, or Chechnya, or Colombia, or Sri Lanka, or Burma, or the Congo, or anywhere else on the far-flung earth where the machines of power wring the blood and terror that is their fuel from the flesh of men and women and children. (And this geography of suffering includes the sacred Homeland itself, of course, where, for example, more than two million citizens are now held in cages, most of them for the “crime” of temporarily deranging their senses to escape the pain of the world that power has made.)…

Video: Gaza zoo destroyed
Monkeys and camels were among many animals killed by Israeli fire at a Gaza zoo.
By Ashraf Helmi, Videographer, and Megan Hirons, Photographer
The Gaza Zoo reeks of death. But zookeeper Emad Jameel Qasim doesn’t appear to react to the stench as he walks around the animals’ enclosures. A month ago, it was attracting families – he says the zoo drew up to 1,000 visitors each day. He points at the foot-long hole in the camel in one of the enclosures. “This camel was pregnant, a missile went into her back,” he tells us. “Look, look at her face. She was in pain when she died.” Around every corner, inside almost every cage are dead animals, who have been lying in their cages since the Israeli incursion. Qasim doesn’t understand why they chose to destroy his zoo…

Obama: True Friend of Israel
Reza Fiyouzat, Revolutionary Flowerpot Society
…Yes, to prove how quick of a study he is, Obama didn’t forget to include the big-ticket items of strategic import that he also was required to turn in: Insults for the Palestinians, the Afghans and the Pakistanis. It didn’t take him long at all to reveal how much of a slave he has promised to be for his Israeli bosses. Look how successfully he has turned in his homework, reports all typed-up, double spaced, one and half inch margins, with a neat title page, with appendices featuring special charts, color-coded and all handed in before term, already got his ‘A+’; for work done so well and the report written up oh, so beautifully on the topic of … Gaza! “Israel has a right to self-defense,” and, “No democracy can tolerate such danger to its people.” This line of non-reason is such a non-sequitur and so irrational that it is almost insane to utter; it is clearly not said to address a real problem. What does it mean, anyway? That ‘democracies’ can kill innocent children indiscriminately by the hundreds in a short span of time, if they so wish? That ‘democracies’ can occupy other people’s land indefinitely and subject the people of those occupied lands to any sadistic and cruel type of behavior the human mind can conjure up? What kind of ‘defense’ requires killing and maiming innocent children, women and men by the thousands, to ‘retaliate’ for the killing of one person, even if we agree that the Hamas rockets were the real reason for the ‘retaliation’? Is Obama sick! in the head?…

Biden Indicates US Attacks in Pakistan Will Continue
New VP Won’t Comment on Latest Strikes
Jason Ditz
Answering questions about US policy with respect to its ongoing attacks in Pakistan, Vice President Joe Biden pointed reporters to President Obama’s comments during the campaign that “if there is an actionable target, of a high-level Al-Qaeda personnel, that he would not hesitate to use action to deal with that.” As far as last week’s attacks in North and South Waziristan, which killed 22 people including a number of children, Biden declared that “I can’t speak to any particular attack. I can’t speak to any particular action. It’s not appropriate for me to do that.”..

Nothing to go back to, no place of their own
For many Iraqis displaced by war, home is wherever they can find it
James Warden, Stars and Stripes
Jabar Abu Abdullah once had a good job — guarding a farm in Sab al Bor — and a trailer to live in. But like many Iraqis, he fled his home four years ago when sectarian fighting broke out. Now, unlike those countrymen who are returning to their old neighborhoods as the violence subsides, Abdullah remains in the Baghdad slum of Chirkuk, operating a closet-sized general store. “I don’t own anything, so I can’t go back,” he said. Most reports on Iraqis who fled sectarian fighting have focused on those who want to reclaim their homes. Yet masses of displaced Iraqis have no homes to return to, and no desire to return to the areas where they once lived…

How the Press, the Pentagon, and Even Human Rights Groups Sold Us an Army Field Manual that (Still) Sanctions Torture
Jeffrey S. Kaye,
A January 17th New York Times editorial noted that Attorney General designate Eric Holder testified at his nomination hearings that when it came to overhauling the nation’s interrogation rules for both the military and the CIA, the Army Field Manual represented “a good start.” The editorial noted the vagueness of Holder’s statement. Left unsaid was the question, if the AFM is only a “good start,” what comes next? The Times editorial writer never bothered to mention the fact that three years earlier, a different New York Times article introduced a new controversy regarding the rewrite of the Army Field Manual. The rewrite was inspired by a proposal by Senator John McCain to limit U.S. military and CIA interrogation methods to those in the Army Field Manual. (McCain would later allow an exception for the CIA.)…

Israeli Soldiers Play ‘Sophie’s Choice’ With Palestinian Mothers

…Out of all the devastation I have seen so far, there is one story in particular that I think the world needs to hear. Obama’s Inauspicious Beginning
Khaled Amayreh
…Obama has refrained from denouncing the recent Nazi-like crimes committed by the Zio-Nazi state in the Gaza Strip. Obama spoke elaborately about Israel’s right to defend itself, but said absolutely nothing about the Palestinian people’s right to defend themselves. He cited the “thousands of rockets” that Hamas fired on Israel, but completely ignored the cruel and deadly aggressions Israel has been carrying out against an imprisoned people languishing under a manifestly criminal siege that has striking similarities with the German siege of Ghetto Warsaw during the Second World War. Obama said the Palestinians needed food, clean water and basic medical care. However, he carefully refrained from uttering the word “freedom.” That was really mind-boggling, even shocking…

Thousands attend funeral of drone victims
By Mushtaq Yusufzai, Malik Mumtaz & Irfan Burki
Thousands of tribesmen on Saturday attended the funeral prayers of the victims of Friday’s drone attacks in the North and South Waziristan Agencies. They condemned the killings and asked US President Barack Obama to spend the money on the welfare of the tribal people instead of killing them with sophisticated weapons…Tribal militants and religious scholars present on the occasion were critical of the reporting of the international wire agencies and the national electronic media which, they said, reported that al-Qaeda operatives were killed in the CIA-operated spy-plane attack. Religious scholars, including former MNA Maulana Deendar, Maulana Muhammad Alam and others, addressed a sizeable gathering of mourners at Zyaraki village of the Mirali subdivision and condemned air strikes by the US planes on the tribal villages. They claimed that all those killed in the attack were innocent and local villagers, who had nothing to do with militancy or Taliban…

The U.S. president’s pledges to address the Iraq issue does not raise hopes for the Iraqis who regard them as mere promises.
