Depopulation, Destruction and Displacement of the Palestinian People
Al Nakba Redux
Stephen Lendman
For Palestinians, the Nakba “Catastrophe” is their “Holocaust” six-month slaughter and displacement before and after the May 1948 establishment of Israel. In December 1947, Jews in Palestine numbered 600,000 compared to 1.3 million Palestinians. David Ben-Gurion ordered them removed and for “Every attack…to end with occupation, destruction and expulsion.” He meant depopulation, destruction, mass slaughter, displacement, and erasing a proud people’s history. Palestine was to become Israel. Most of the job was completed, more in 1967, and thereafter incrementally until total dispossession is achieved. Gaza is the latest battleground. More ahead is planned. The struggle for liberation continues…

Message from the Church of God in Gaza
By Fr Manuel Mussallam – Gaza
…The war has affected everyone in Gaza. A teacher fled to our school with her husband and four children. He was hit by shrapnel from an Israeli bomb and his legs badly injured. She is distraught and terrified and when I spoke to her she was desperately looking for clean water to make a bottle for her baby. The Church has lost a 26 year old Catholic man, Naseem Saba, who was killed in an Israeli air raid on 7 January. The day before, Israeli jets destroyed his family home where he lived with his three uncles. As well as the destruction and physical injuries the mental trauma of our people is incalculable. They will need help and support for years to come. They will have to find somewhere to live and we will need centres for those injured and disabled in the shelling, special schools for traumatised or orphaned children and a whole array of rehabilitation services…

250 Gazans in Negev detention center; men are harshly beaten and interrogated
Ma’an news
At least 250 Gazans were detained by Israeli troops during the Gaza invasion, said member of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) Issa Karake on Tuesday. The men are being held in the Negev prison, living in tents and being constantly beaten and attacked, said Karake. Several need hospital treatment, which they are being denied and many are also being used by the Israeli intelligence units as information sources and are interrogated for hours. The Gazans have been isolated and not permitted to interact with prisoners from the West Bank or East Jerusalem. Karake called on the Red Cross to visit the detainees and verify his story, then put pressure on Israel to release the men immediately…

Study: 89% of Gazans have received no humanitarian assistance
Ma’an news
An overwhelming 89% of Gaza’s 1.5 million residents have received no humanitarian aid since Israel began its three-week war in December, the international aid agency CARE reported on Wednesday. CARE conducted a survey among Gaza residents that it says shows that more aid and humanitarian workers are needed in Gaza, and that Israel should “fully open” Gaza’s borders to allow “humanitarian supplies, building materials, and commercial goods into the region.” Another 56% of Gazans are hosting displaced people in their homes, according to the three-day phone survey…

Sadrists between Maliki and Hakim
Roads to Iraq
Three days ago, Al-Hayat reported about a Shiite – Shiite reconciliation, and for sure between the Sadrists and Al-Hakim’s Supreme Council. Al-Hayat report gives you the impression that these attempts are going from both sides. Further reading on an Iraqi source shows you that there are more details and these attempts are one sided, started by Ammar Al-Hakim trying to soften his language and reach the Sadrists, for sure this is for election reasons. Today Al-Hayat reported that Maliki in his turn is also trying to “flirt” with the Sadrists and thanks them for standing against the Supreme Council’s attempt to oust Maliki…

Worse Than an Earthquake
By Kathy Kelly – Rafah, Gaza
…”Yet, all the world helps after an earthquake,” said a doctor at the Shifaa hospital in Gaza. “We feel very frustrated,” he continued. “The West, Europe and the U.S., watched this killing go on for 22 days, as though they were watching a movie, watching the killing of women and children without doing anything to stop it. I was expecting to die at any moment. I held my babies and expected to die. There was no safe place in Gaza.” He and his colleagues are visibly exhausted, following weeks of work in the Intensive Care and Emergency Room departments at a hospital that received many more patients than they could help. “Patients died on the floor of the operating room because we had only six operating rooms,” said Dr. Saeed Abuhassan, M.D, an ICU doctor who grew up in Chicago…

The One and Only: Waiting for Word From on High
Chris Floyd
Now that Barack Obama is finally the “only one president” that we have at a time, I’m sure we can look forward to hearing what he really thinks about the mass slaughter of civilians in Gaza by the American-equipped Israeli war machine. His prolonged, polite reticence on this burning subject (burning with white phosphorous seared into the flesh of children, that is) will surely now give way to eloquent condemnation of Israel’s brutal and blatant display of state terror. And this scorching denunciation will no doubt be accompanied by appropriate government action: cutting off or curtailing aid to Israel, supporting UN sanctions against the rogue state, providing generous, no-strings reconstruction funds to restore what American-made weapons has destroyed, and so on. What better way to demonstrate the “renewal of America’s moral standing in the world”? …

Gaza: ‘I watched an Israeli soldier shoot dead my two little girls’
By Donald Macintyre in Gaza City
A Palestinian father has claimed that he saw two of his young daughters shot dead and another critically injured by an Israeli soldier who emerged from a stationary tank and opened fire as the family obeyed an order from the Israeli forces to leave their home. Khaled Abed Rabbo said Amal, aged two and Suad, seven, were killed by fire from the soldier’s semi-automatic rifle. His third daughter, Samer, four, has been evacuated to intensive care in a Belgian hospital after suffering critical spinal injuries which he said were inflicted in the attack early in Israel’s ground offensive…

WASHINGTON PARTIES as CARNAGE CONTINUES through ‘ceasefire’ Day 24
Carolyn Bennett, thepeoplesvoice.org
…Israel hunted down human beings in camps and houses and schools; slaughtered women, men and children. Throughout the carnage interspersed with meaningless ceasefires, this U.S. proxy (Zionist Israel) dropped hundreds of mega-ton bombs and poisonous flesh-burning chemicals on a defenseless people. Israel’s government justified its crimes against humanity, its breaches of international law on a false claim of countering threat and defending its security—against a people incapable of mounting any threat against a nuclear-armed, Western-emboldened Occupier. The crimes committed by this U.S. proxy in the current 24 days and extending more than 60 consecutive years have wiped out thousands of Palestinians, walled them in, destroyed their self-sufficiency, reduced them to dependency on handouts from aid organizations, cut off that aid in repeated blockades and random checkpoints, denied them the basics of life (food, water, safety, fuel, electricity, housing, employment and trade, education, operational government, freedom of movement); destroyed their land and the futures of their children…

Obama’s inaugural address: Amid banalities, a call for austerity
Bill Van Auken, WSWS
…There was a second fundamental theme that ran through the speech, which was that America’s bellicosity and militarism will continue, albeit with slightly greater attention to wrapping a predatory foreign policy in the rhetoric of morality and altruism. In the first substantive line of the speech, Obama declared, “Our nation is at war against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred.” The implication was unmistakable: The “global war on terror,” the pretext used by the Bush administration for launching two wars of aggression, carrying out torture, extraordinary rendition, unlawful detentions and domestic spying, continues unabated…

Israel: Obama’s Foreign Policy – No Change
Sarah Meyer, Index Research

* Ensure a Strong U.S.-Israel Partnership: Barack Obama and Joe Biden strongly support the U.S.-Israel relationship, and believe that our first and incontrovertible commitment in the Middle East must be to the security of Israel, America’s strongest ally in the region. They support this closeness, and have stated that the United States will never distance itself from Israel.
* Support Israel’s Right to Self Defense: During the July 2006 Lebanon war, Barack Obama stood up strongly for Israel’s right to defend itself from Hezbollah raids and rocket attacks, cosponsoring a Senate resolution against Iran and Syria’s involvement in the war, and insisting that Israel should not be pressured into a ceasefire that did not deal with the threat of Hezbollah missiles. He and Joe Biden believe strongly in Israel’s right to protect its citizens…

Iran ready to open to energy ties with EU
AP
Iran said Tuesday it is ready to open talks with the European Union to forge closer energy ties. Deputy Foreign Minister Mehdi Safari said his country could act as a transit country or sell its own natural gas to European countries. “We are ready to contribute, we are ready for a dialogue,” Safari told lawmakers at the European Parliament. EU nations are seeking out alternative gas suppliers to lessen their dependence on Russian gas in wake of Moscow’s gas dispute with Ukraine, which left many EU countries without gas for most of January…

British defence secretary prepares escalation in Afghanistan
Harvey Thompson
In a speech to an international conference on January 15, Britain’s defence secretary John Hutton delivered the UK government’s sharpest public criticism of its European NATO allies as regards the US-led occupation of Afghanistan. Urging an increase in NATO troop deployment to the most dangerous parts of Afghanistan, Hutton accused his European counter-parts of expecting the US to do all the “heavy lifting” and said it was time for them to “step up to the plate.” “It is not honest, credible or, I think, sustainable to say the Americans can do more. That is not an alliance, which is one-way traffic. It is not for us to go on saying the Americans can go on doing all the heavy lifting.”…

PA releases Palestinian journalist arrested on incitement charge
Ma’an news
…PA Preventative Security had originally arrested Khalid Amayrah from the town of Duha, near Hebron, for “incitement against the Palestinian Authority” during the Israeli assault on Gaza. Amayrah was also accused of “arousing rivalry” between Palestinian factions. But Preventative Security released the journalist after questioning and a two-day detention while legal procedures were handled. Amayrah called his detention a violation of freedom of the press and called on acting Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to issue a “binding [executive] order” barring PA security forces from detaining journalists. The journalist, however, did note that he was not treated poorly while in detention, despite the its illegality…

Hamas confirms PA affiliates in Gaza executed for collaboration
Ma’an news
Former Palestinian Authority figures “distributed candy celebrating the Gaza offensive,” Hamas claimed on Wednesday. According to Hamas leader in exile Mousa Abu Marzouq, PA sympathizers “sent kisses to Israeli warplanes” and “guided these planes to their targets.” For the first time since allegations were made weeks before, Abu Marzouq confirmed that Hamas did execute several collaborators during Israel’s assault on the Gaza Strip…

Gitmo: The Facility Will (Eventually) Close, But the Detentions Will Continue
Jason Ditz
A newly drafted executive order by President Barack Obama will fulfill a campaign promise to close the detention center at Guantanamo Bay. The order will, once the new president gets around to signing it, require the facility to close within a year. The facility where detainees were held often on little if any evidence was a symbol of America’s post-9/11 hysteria and the excesses of presidential power during the Bush Administration. Its closing will remove the symbol, but a clean break from the policy remains elusive…
