Video: Gaza’s united resistance
AlJazeera.net
Though Israeli officials say their Gaza offensive is aimed at only decimating Hamas, other Palestinian groups are also battling Israeli troops on the ground. The Islamic Jihad and Fatah’s Al Aqsa Brigades have joined the war in Gaza. Al Jazeera’s Roza Ibragimova reports…

The Blame Game in Gaza: Covering for Israel, Concealing War Crimes
Stephen Lendman
In his January 8 article, “Gaza Under Fire,” John Pilger quotes the Soviet dissident Yevgeny Yevtushenko saying: “When the truth is replaced by silence, the silence is a lie.” America’s dominant media suppress facts, sacrifice accuracy, and conceal the greater lie that: — all Israeli aggression is collaboratively planned months in advance with Washington; — American aid makes it possible – billions of dollars annually, the latest weapons and technology, and Security Council vetoes to assure no anti-Israeli resolutions with teeth are passed; — six months of preparation preceded Israel’s terror bombings followed by invasion, occupation, and repeated war crimes on the ground…

Gaza death tolls passes 1,000
AlJazeera.net
More than 1,000 Palestinians have been killed during Israel’s 19-day war in Gaza, Palestinian medical officials have said, as clashes continue throughout the Strip. Civilians make up about 40 per cent of casualities with children accounting for a third of the dead, aid agencies and Palestinian medics said. At least 4,630 people have been injured, Hasanein Myawaya, the head of Palestinian emergency services, said…

Killing the Dead
Hanitizer, KABOBfest
They say you should not beat a dead horse. But Israel bombs dead Palestinians. Ala’a Almadhoun, a reporter for Alarabiya Network, reported that a recent Israel struck a Palestinian Cemetery in the Northern Part of the Gaza Strip. The bodies of the dead — many of them recent — were scattered around the cemetery. Mortifying…I guess Israel ran out of things to bomb. “What the hell, let’s bomb a cemetery”. Evidently, it wasn’t enough that Israel killed those people, they had to go and harass them in their final resting place…

Those who want to bump off the witnesses of the slaughter
Palestine Think Tank
A Criminal website incites the killing of volunteers in Gaza. Vittorio Arrigoni is also in their sights. There should be investigation against Lee Kaplan. The criminal website stoptheism.com/ invites people to kill the few volunteers who are providing health treatment in Gaza under Israeli bombs. They are Americans, Spaniards, Australians, Italians and other volunteers who report us what news they can about the real impact of the Israeli aggression in Gaza. Amongst them there is Vittorio Arrigoni, human rights activist. What we have here is pure incitement to killing, furnished also with the photos of those “wanted”. It’s really unconceivable that the site is still online. We demand that the Italian Government and Foreign Office take steps right now to call for it to be immediately closed and to bring those responsible to court…

White Phosphorous and Dense Inert Metal Explosives: Is Israel Using Banned and Experimental Munitions in Gaza?
Democracy Now!
Israel is coming under increasing criticism for its possible use of banned and experimental munitions. Human Rights Watch has accused Israel of illegally firing white phosphorous, which causes horrific burns if it comes in contact with the skin, over crowded refugee camps in Gaza. Medics and human rights groups are also reporting that they are seeing injuries distinctive of another controversial weapon, Dense Inert Metal Explosive, known as DIME, that was designed by the US Air Force in 2006. Those struck by the weapon who survive suffer severe mutilations and internal injuries. We go to the Gaza border to speak with Marc Garlasco of Human Rights Watch and to Norway to speak with Dr. Mads Gilbert, who just returned from the Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. He says Gaza is “truly a scene from Dante’s Inferno.”…

Could the rising anger of British MPs shake America’s complacency?
STUART LITTLEWOOD
After seeing American politicians pass resolutions giving unconditional support for Israel’s offensive in Gaza – the Senate unanimously and Congress by 390 to 5 – readers might like to know how their British counterparts viewed things in a Commons emergency debate on 12 January, when foreign secretary David Miliband rose to make a statement. He said, among other things, that “the immediate trigger for Israeli military action on 27 December was the end of the truce. Hamas refused to extend the lull and instead fired almost 300 rockets into Israel between 19 and 27 December.”…So straightaway our foreign secretary was in difficulty with the facts. Hamas kept to the 6-month truce, fired no rockets or mortar shells into Israel and was largely successful in restraining other more militant Palestinian groups, which include Fatah elements. Israel however failed to honour its pledge to lift the economic blockade. Then on 4 November Israelis raided Gaza killing six Palestinians – an act which served to provoke a retaliation and thus the ‘excuse’ Israel needed to launch its pre-planned, meticulously timed all-out war on an already blockaded, weakened and largely unarmed Gaza population, who had nowhere to run… Suffice to say that an increasing number of British MPs are disgusted by the mindless destruction in Gaza and the sickening slaughter of innocents, although some still defend the indefensible. Here is a selection of the exchanges in Parliament…

Gaza Appeal from Bethlehem Bible College
Kawther Salam
The director of the Bethlehm Bible College, Dr. Bishara Awad, wrote me that the BBC has five students and some refugees from Gaza who have been staying at college since the Israeli invasion. Dr. Bishara said that they have also been in direct touch with friends and relatives in Gaza. What they tell them is all the same: they have no food, no water, no electricity and they are afraid for their lives. Once the war is over they will find out more about the magnitude of the destruction and loss of life. The news agencies do not have enough access to the Gaza Strip due to the Israeli prohibition. Therefore it is difficult to find out exactly what is going on. Dr. Awad suspects that things are much worse in the Gaza Strip than what we are seeing on our TV screens…

Senior Guantánamo official admits 9/11 suspect was tortured
Torture left alleged ‘20th hijacker’ Mohammed al-Qahtani with serious heart problems, says Susan Crawford
Paul Lewis, Guardian
A senior Bush administration official has admitted that a Guantánamo Bay detainee was tortured by the US military, leaving him in a “life-threatening condition”. Susan Crawford, the Pentagon official in charge of military tribunals at the camp, said Mohammed al-Qahtani, a Saudi suspected of involvement in the September 11 terrorist plot, was subject to sustained isolation, sleep deprivation, nudity and prolonged exposure to cold. She said the torture meant he could not be prosecuted. “We tortured Qahtani,” she told the Washington Post. “His treatment met the legal definition of torture. And that’s why I did not refer the case [for prosecution].”…

The Gaza War: In the Context of Other Colonialist Military Campaigns
Shmuel Amir, Hagada Hasmalit
At the beginning of the attack on Gaza, Ehud Barak struck a pose reminiscent of Julius Caesar when he proclaimed that a decision had been made, and that “the fighting has begun.” The obvious question is what war exactly? In order for a war to take place, two sides are needed, but here in Gaza there are no two sides. On the one side is the [Israeli] Air Force, equipped with the best fighter aircraft—supplied by its “friend” the United States. On the other side, there are completely defenseless people, who face terrifying fire falling on them from the skies. Do we know of a war in which there is only one fighter? According to these basic assumptions, the fighting announced by the Israeli Defense Minister Barak is not a war, but a hunt…

Israel Has Managed to Lose Again
Gilad Atzmon, Palestine Think Tank
Haaretz reported today that IDF Senior officials “believe that Israel should strive to reach an immediate cease-fire with Hamas, and not expand its offensive against the Palestinian Islamist group in Gaza.” This shouldn’t take us by great surprise. Though Israel has proved beyond doubt that it is rather capable of conducting large-scale genocide, it also proved that its military forces do not have the answer to Islamic resistance…

90 organizations, mainly French, to prosecute Israel for War Crimes
Saed Bannoura – IMEM
Ninety organizations, mainly French, decided to prosecute Israel at the International Court for committing War Crimes against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip as the Israeli offensive left more than 1033 Palestinians dead, and over 4580 wounded in its first two weeks. The French Lamond Newspaper reported that the organizations prosecuting Israel in the International Court are pro-Palestinian and that this step comes as several Arab and international organizations are also moving towards filing lawsuit against Israel for war crimes against the unarmed Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip, especially since Israel is using internationally banned weapons in its war such as White Phosphorus…

Organizers of the solidarity mission that is bringing medical aid, doctors, journalists and parliamentarians to the Strip, say that the ship got underway at nine this morning. A 28-year-old Palestinian doctor in the Gaza refugee camp of Jabalya was killed by Israel Defense Forces fire this week while on his way to remove casualties from a building being targeted by Israeli missiles, according to the Mizan human rights group in Gaza. His death raises the death toll of medical personnel killed by the IDF to seven since December 27, human rights groups said. Has Hamas accepted the Egyptian ceasefire proposal?
Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmad Abu Al-Gheit announced on Wednesday that Hamas has accepted an Egyptian proposal for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. Hamas has not yet commented on the report. The Egyptian plan calls for a withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip, the opening of Gaza’s borders, and a role for the Palestinian Authority in controlling the borders. At a press conference in Cairo, Abu Al-Gheit said “we will tell the Israeli side what Hamas had informed us.”…

Israeli media: 2 rockets fall in northern Israel
The Associated Press
Media reports say two rockets have fallen on northern Israel in an attack that could signal a second front in Israel’s 19-day offensive against Gaza’s Hamas rulers. Security officials in Israel could not immediately confirm the media reports. Four rockets were fired on northern Israel last Thursday. Lebanon’s Hezbollah guerrilla group denied responsibility and speculation focused on small Palestinian groups in Lebanon…
