Google’s censors: The cat is out of the bag
Uruknet
As our readers know, on April 24, 2008 Google stopped indexing Uruknet.info as a news source. It was the fourth time that Google discontinued indexing Uruknet. The previous times google had reinstated it following many complaints sent in by our readers. The last time there was nothing to be done: in a first moment google news wouldn’t even answer to our emails and, at last, after about ten days has answered with a series of lies… Anyway, censorship carried out by google towards uruknet wasn’t restricted to this: subsequently google.com also started to cancel articles from uruknet previously indexed…It even seems that google mail has blacklisted the name of uruknet: when we repeatedly tried to register uruknet among blogs we didn’t even receive the usual automatic email. A this point, we were sure that “someone” had asked google to carry out a total censorship in uruknet: the few pages still indexed in google.com were an obvious trick used in order to disguise censorship and not making it immediaterly evident to any user. Anyhow, we needed a proof, and we achieved it easily: we arranged two new websites, one in Italian an the other in English, respectively Notizie dal Medio Oriente and News from Middle East that are in fact perfect mirrorings of uruknet, with a few graphic changes and we we put them directly on the same server where uruknet is located. After that we requested google.news to index them and, after they analysed both websites, we obtained it without the leas! t proble m. So, it was so clear since the very forst moment, all the despicable excuses pleaded by google.news for having removed uruknet were lies google came up with in order to account for the censorship obviously pressed for by someone who didn’t like our website. All we needed was to change the name of the website leaving untouched form and substance and every problem was gone…

Report direct from Gaza Day 15 of Israeli War On Gaza. More civilians killed: Death toll 810, wounded 3400
Sameh A. Habeeb

Civilian casualties rise to 85% of the dead in Gaza
Greta Berlin, FreeGaza.org
Here are some newsworthy items out of Gaza that are unlikely to be making it to the Western presses. I received this information directly from one of the staff of the Mezan Center for Human Rights about twenty minutes ago. 1. Israel has begun a new policy in Gaza in the past two days called the “roof knock”. This is when a “small” rocket is fired from Israeli military aircraft that is strong enough to blast open the roof of a targeted building. It is sent as a “warning message” to the building’s inhabitants giving them between 2 and 3 minutes to evacuate before the building is completely destroyed. A number of cases of this new technique have been reported recently. 2. While the UN continues to claim that “only” 25% of the casualties from the attacks on Gaza are civilian, the Mezan Center for Human Rights (known for the care it takes not to overstate the numbers and for its strict verification policies) estimates that the number of civilian casualties is approximately 85%…

PFLP: “Urgent call to Greek people: Block the shipment of US arms to Israel through Greek port!”
Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine
The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine calls upon the Greek movement, the Greek people and all international progressive forces to halt the planned shipment of U.S. arms to Israel from the Greek port of Astakos. International media reports have revealed that the U.S. Navy is attempting to ship 325 20-foot containers of ammunition, over 3000 tons, in an emergency shipment of arms to aid the occupation in its ongoing war crimes against the Palestinian people in Gaza. The PFLP is calling upon the people of the world, and particularly the Greek movement to act to stop this shipment of arms. The U.S. has been attempting to hire a merchant ship to transport the weaponry to the Israelis at Asdud port in mid- to late January. This weaponry must not be allowed to enter the hands of the Israelis, where it will be used to massacre our people in Gaza! It must be stopped by all means!…

Israel drops leaflets over Gaza warning of ‘escalation’ in violence
Associated Press
The Israeli air force today dropped leaflets on the Gaza Strip warning residents that it plans to escalate its military offensive, now in its second week. The army said it had dropped the flyers throughout Gaza and that the notices are meant as a “general warning”. The leaflet said Israel was about to begin a “new phase in the war on terror”. It said Israel will “escalate” an operation that already has killed more than 800 Palestinians…

Human Rights Watch: “Israel is using white-phosphorus against Gaza”
Saed Bannoura – IMEMC
Human Rights Watch (HRW) stated that the Israeli Army is using White Phosphorus in its artillery shells against the Gaza Strip. Researchers of HRW said that they observed on January 9 and 10 several artillery shells fired by the army near Gaza and Jabalia, and that these shells apparently included white-phosphorus. Using this type of shells is banned by the international humanitarian law, the group added. The shells can severely burn people and are capable of setting structures, fields and other civilian facilities on fire…

Gaza officials: Massive sewage flood imminent
Saed Bannoura – IMEMC News
Due to the ongoing Israeli invasion of Gaza, nearly 700,000 Palestinians have gone without water for days, and sewage pumping systems have stopped. In many places, raw sewage is running through the streets, and officials have warned that a massive sewage flood, like the one in 2007 that killed 5 people, could occur at any time. One million people in Gaza remain without electricity for nearly two full weeks. The Deputy Director of the Coastal Municipalities Water Utility, Maher Najjar, told Israeli reporter Amira Hass that between 40 and 50 % of the Gazan population are now without access to water…

US, Iran have shared interest in Afghanistan: Petraeus
AFP
Iran could become involved in a regional strategy to the conflict in Afghanistan, as Tehran shares common interests with the United States there, suggested General David Petraeus, head of US Central Command. A resolution to the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan requires “a regional approach … that includes Pakistan, India the Central Asian states and even China and Russia, along with perhaps, at some point Iran,” Petraeus said at a conference organized by the Institute of Peace think tank. “There is a common interest between Afghanistan, the coalition (of foreign forces in Afghanistan) and Iran, but there are also major conflicting interests, needless to say,” said Petraeus, who is in charge of US operations in Afghanistan and Iraq…

US says Iraqis may still be held without charge
Peter Graff and Ahmed Rasheed, Reuters
Some prisoners held indefinitely without charge by U.S. forces in Iraq may not be freed or given trials, even though U.S. forces lost the authority to hold them at the beginning of this year, a U.S. military spokesman said. Iraqi legal experts said the plans — which would apply to prisoners U.S. forces believe are dangerous or of intelligence value but have not been charged with a crime — might violate Iraqi law by placing detainees beyond the reach of the courts. U.S. forces are holding 15,000 prisoners, most of whom have been detained without charge under the authority of a U.N. Security Council resolution which expired on Dec. 31…

Board of Deputies of British Jews: on the road to nowhere
Gilad Atzmon, Palestine Think Tank
Yesterday evening I was informed about an email notification from the most rabid Zionist institutes operating in Britain, The Board Of Deputies of British Jews (BOD). The email suggested that the BOD had cancelled Sunday’s Solidarity Rally with Israel. According to the ‘official email’ The BOD has decided to cancel their solidarity rally because they grasped that it would be very unwise for the British Jewish community to associate itself voluntarily with the inhuman crimes practiced by Israel in Gaza. I have to admit that this would be the most clever thing a Jewish institution could do. Read the text and judge for yourself…

Mourn the Cat That Died
Mohammed Omer*
On the phone from Gaza, Zahrah Salem shares the news she has just seen, that so many at the White House were “deeply saddened” by the death of the cat India Willie. Why, she asks, is nobody at the White House deeply saddened by the death of so many children in Gaza. After a pause she says, “At least the cat did not die hungry, like the children in Gaza.” Zahrah Salem, 64, has four children and 15 grandchildren to worry about. Day after day of bombing brings blessing they are still there. “We all sleep in one room,” she says. “So if we die, we die together. What if we die and the children don’t, we don’t want to leave them behind to suffer.”…

UN on Gaza: living hell, 821 Palestinians killed as of late Saturday afternoon
PNN
The onslaught in the Gaza Strip, which has killed 821 Palestinians, is widely supported by Israeli voters who will go to the polls this month, according to a survey conducted yesterday. The Israeli government announced today via leaflets dropped on the Strip that it would “escalate” its attacks in a “new phase in the war on terror.” The plan seems to be for another two weeks of this, until the end of GW Bush’s term in Washington…

Israel rejects UN cease-fire, continues Gaza assault
Tom Eley
On Friday, Israel continued its bombardment of the densely populated Gaza strip, rejecting a UN Security Council resolution calling for a cease-fire. Israeli leaders hinted that they were preparing the “third phase” of the blitz, which would entail an invasion of the inner city of Gaza, home to 410,000 people. The criminal character of Israel’s war is reflected in its death toll. The number of Palestinians killed is rapidly mounting. Nearly 800 have died, and thousands more have been maimed. It is now believed that about half of those killed in Gaza have been civilians. Meanwhile, 13 Israelis have died, with only three of these civilians. The ratio of Palestinian civilians to Israelis killed is over 100 to 1…

Diary: ‘Gaza has been zeroed’
Sami Abdel Shafi, Aljazeera
…The fact that Israel has attacked Gaza’s civilian institutions, like the attack on the ministries, has destroyed what little capacity we did have to run civil services – such as medical and emergency aid provision. Gaza’s economy had already been zeroed after the Israelis stepped up its blockade of the Gaza Strip after Hamas won the 2006 elections in both the West Bank and Gaza. The siege prevented resources getting into the hands of the first Hamas government and the 2007 unity government between Hamas and Fatah, severely restricting their ability to establish a fully-functioning civil society. Our private sector had already been annihilated, and the result of this war will be the annihilation of the public sector too…

Dr. Barghouthi: “Israel is executing civilians in Gaza, committing war crimes”
Saed Bannoura – IMEMC
Palestinian Legislator, Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi, secretary-general of the Palestinian National Initiative, stated in a press conference on Saturday at the Watan Media Center in Ramallah that Israel continues its crimes in Gaza for the fifteenth day, and is committing war crimes by shelling civilian homes and killing children, women and elderly. Dr. Barghouthi added that the large number of civilian casualties proves that Israel’s claims of targeting the fighters are false and outrageous. He demanded all statistics and cases be documented in preparation for an international criminal investigation, and he also demanded the formation of an international committee which would be in charge of prosecuting Israeli officials responsible for war crimes…
