Israeli occupation forces committed new massacres today when they targeted schools provided by UNRWA to house civilians who fled the Israeli bombardment in eastern Jablaya…

FLASHBACK: Summer Rains and Saad
David Halpin
… Following the capture of Corporal Gilad Shalit and the shooting dead of two of his comrades by a Palestinian guerrilla unit on the 25th of June, ‘Operation Summer Rains’ was set in place by the occupier headed by Mr Olmert…in those post-Shalit weeks they saw over 250 deaths including 57 children. In such conditions of chaos, grief and horror, record keeping is relegated. The injuries shown in these digital pictures were categorised as follows:- 1. Widespread burning and flaying ie no skin/fat and with muscle exposed. Some of the burns appeared to be the result of high temperature flash burns. Saad is a living example. Agents – thermobaric missile – Hellfire AGM-114N – plus incendiary material. 2. Amputation by blast at the root of the legs or the lower torso. Agent – the Palestinians believe there is a bomb or a missile with a projecting lance which causes detonation above the ground. 3. Less severe injury of the skin – possibly some burning – but with rupture of soft viscera. Some were admitted dead in all probability, but others went on to exploration. Ruptured livers, blood in the chest cavity etc. Death was usual. Agent – shock wave – push and pull of a thermobaric missile. 4. Entry wounds like those of shrapnel. Sometimes limbs without a blood supply. X-rays showed no retained metal. Explored – burnt, but not charred tissue, with complex branching extensions. Very difficult to expose all the abnormal tissue and to excise it. Therefore a high infection rate, higher amputation rate and a! higher mortality rate. Agents – thermobaric weapon containing incendiary material. Phosphorus or uranium are possibilities…

Gaza: The murdered families were those that had been expelled from the northern zone
Arablinks
If you were wondering what would be the fate of those residents of northern Gaza Strip who, according to the plan approved following a visit from Condi last March, were to be forcibly evacuated from their homes to create a cordon sanitaire within rocket-firing distance of the northern border with Israel, you might want to consider this as a reference point: Forty-two of them were killed yesterday by Israeli tank fire at the school in Jabaliya camp where they had taken refuge…

Another massacre by occupation forces in Afghanistan
Helmandis fret over indiscriminate NATO-led ISAF strikes
Locals claimed that over 17 civilians most of them elders and children had been killed by ISAF soldiers during the last fortnight.
Zainullah Stanekzaiz
Locals of Sangin district of southern Helmand province Tuesday warned that majority of the residents were compelled to flee the area due to the airstrikes carried out by NATO-led ISAF forces without even informing the local security forces. Locals claimed that over 17 civilians most of them elders and children had been killed by ISAF soldiers during the last fortnight. The locals also criticized the irresponsible strikes of ISAF soldiers in a gathering participated by governor… “Ordinary people will be forced to take arms and to fight against Afghan government and NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) soldiers if the current situation continues,” Abdul Waheed warned…

Index on Afghanistan, December 2008 Timeline: “Graveyard of Empires”
Sarah Meyer, Index Research
…Afghanistan is also getting its fair share of revisionism. A CRS Report for Congress , written by Kenneth Katzman and dated 27 August 2003, airbrushed the history of wars in Afghanistan. “Afghanistan is a fragile state attempting, with substantial U.S. help, to stabilize after more than 22 years of warfare including a US-led war, that brought the current government to power.” The report continues “Afghan citizens are enjoying new personal freedoms that were forbidden under the Taliban.” A read of all the Index on Afghanistan research articles will show this to be false. It is no wonder US ‘intelligence’ is in trouble with such a “mistaken interpretations”, for which the US government is well known. Further, the Pentagon merges public affairs with propaganda, assisted by the corporate media. History is also suffering from a crisis of mismanagement within the State Department’s Historical Advisory Committee which does not bode well for historical integrity…

The Monstrosity of War
Dahr Jamail
…KPFA correspondent Habeeb has reported of Israeli tanks preventing ambulances from reaching the wounded and of three paramedics and ambulance staff having been killed by the Israeli military while trying to rescue a family. Oxfam aid agency also reported on the incident. Journalist activist Ewa Jasiewicz reported, “On 31st December, around 2 am, two emergency medical services personnel were targeted by an Israeli missile as they attempted to reach injured in the Jabaliya region, northern Gaza. The first died immediately, the second soon after of complications from his internal injuries. Two days later, two more medics were injured in the area east of Gaza, again in the line of duty, again trying to reach the injured. Under the Geneva Conventions, Israel is obliged to allow and ensure safe passage to medical personnel to the injured. Instead, Israel routinely targets them.” I am aware that for those who have not experienced war firsthand, an accusation against a supposedly civilized government of the deliberate targeting of medical personnel, who are, in theory, protected by international law, is unbelievable and shocking. But there are others like me who have witnessed such tactics firsthand on several occasions. I saw it being used by the Israeli military during their assault on southern Lebanon during summer 2006, just as I had seen the US military doing in Fallujah in 2004. Such is the madness of war…

A Fragile Existence: Continuing Insecurity For Palestinians in Lebanon
Isabelle Humphries, WRMEA
…Some 400,000 Palestinians live in Lebanon, families of those who fled under attack or in fear from invading Jewish militias in 1948 Palestine. A small number managed to move to Lebanese towns and gain citizenship, but the vast majority found themselves living in poverty in the new refugee camps. The U.N. Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) established 17 official camps, and many other neighborhoods served as unofficial refugee camps and squatting sites. Unemployment and poverty was widespread, and refugees were unable to move between camps without official permission. It was forbidden to extend camp boundaries to accommodate natural population growth, or to expand homes and add new floors. Palestinians in Lebanon still are barred from nearly 70 different professions, syndicates and medical associations…

US backs Egypt ceasefire plan
AlJazeera.net
The US secretary of state has expressed support for a joint French-Egyptian plan aimed at implementing an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Condoleezza Rice said on Wednesday at a meeting of the UN Security Council that she would support the initiative on condition that Hamas halts its rocket fire into southern Israeli towns. Hosni Mubarak, the Egyptian president, presented the proposal after talks with Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh on Tuesday. A Palestinian official said Hamas leaders had been briefed in Egypt on the proposals by Mubarak and were discussing them internally…

“By choice they made themselves immune
Saree Makdisi, The Electronic Intifada

As horrific as the toll of dead and injured already is, the scale of Israel’s bombing, and its targeting of ambulances and medical and rescue crews — several doctors and paramedics have been killed or wounded so far — means that the true totals are actually unknown. Countless numbers of victims have bled to death in the streets or in the ruins of their smashed homes. Calls for help aren’t getting through Gaza’s phone networks, battered to pieces along with the rest of the civilian infrastructure — its water, sewage, electricity systems, all already crumbling as a result of the years of siege. The victims that are evacuated — as often, these days, in civilian cars as in the remaining ambulances — make it to hospitals that are overwhelmed; many will die that might have otherwise been saved…

Witnesses to Israel’s war crimes
Rami Almeghari writing from the occupied Gaza Strip,
“At about 2am early this morning, a group of Israeli soldiers broke into my house. They began screaming loudly, smashing everything in front of them, destroying the house completely,” Nasir Hejo, 38, said on Monday, with a weary face, uncombed hair and bare feet. “They shouted at us, forced out of the house. We wanted to move right after they attacked us. They ordered us to move south. Soldiers began shooting at us, killing my 17-old-year,” Nasir stated. After their flight from their one-story house next to the Tawhid mosque, on the outskirts of Gaza City, Nasir Hejo and 20 family members fled to a school run by the United Nations agency for Palestine refugees, UNRWA, in the Nuseirat refugee camp…

The Logic of Rage (A Chronicle of the War in Gaza)
George Capaccio
Dear Gabriel, speak to me. Let your words take the place of mine. My own are such poor vessels, too feeble to carry even the promise of life. Besides, what could I possibly say that would matter, that would make even the slightest bit of difference to the people of Gaza. For those who must suffer these most wicked acts done in the name of self-defense, I appeal to you. In the silence of this room where one candle safely burns, I think of Gaza and the flames that won’t die down, the cries that go on burning night after deafening night, the blood that pumps from an endless wound, the tears that will smolder for years to come in hearts reduced to blackened pits. And I see the planes with devout precision delivering sermons of bloody hell. The wounded, the dying fall like ashes from a single flame mere bombs can’t blow out. It is a flame born of a people’s struggle for the right to exist on their own ancestral land, free of the oppressor’s crushing claim…

UN official says Gaza school was clearly marked
Claudia Parsons
A U.N. official in Gaza said a school where dozens of Palestinians were killed by tank shells on Tuesday was clearly marked with a U.N. flag and its location had been reported to Israeli authorities. John Ging, director of operations in Gaza for UNRWA, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, said the death toll in the Israeli artillery strike near the school in Jabalya refugee camp was 30 dead with another 55 people injured. Medical officials on the spot have said more than 40 people were killed…

ISRAEL ON NOTICE, WE ARE COMING
FREE GAZA MOVEMENT
There is a time when silence is complicity and inaction is unacceptable. The ongoing Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip have lead to the death of over 550 Palestinians, including children and women, and the injury of thousands, with the death and injury toll rapidly rising. Massive violations of international humanitarian law are being committed by Israel, both with regard to its obligations as an Occupying Power and in its conduct of hostilities. The community of states has thusfar failed to comply with their duty to ensure Israel’s respect for the Fourth Geneva Convention and protect the Palestinian civilian population from Israel’s serious and persistent violations in accordance with the Convention…

Hamas in Egypt for first Gaza truce talks
AFP
A Hamas delegation was in Cairo on Tuesday to discuss an Egyptian-proposed ceasefire with Israel, 10 days after the Jewish state’s unleashed its massive offensive on the Islamists’ Gaza Strip stronghold. The talks with the Palestinian delegation, headed by Emad al-Alami and Mohammed Nasr from Hamas’s Syrian-based political leadership, represent the first such contact since fighting began but hopes of a truce appear dim. Egypt has a peace deal with Israel and negotiated a previous six-month truce which expired on December 19, heralding the latest violence in which more than 580 Palestinians have been killed…

I will tell you how Arafa died
Eva Bartlett writing from the occupied Gaza Strip, Live from Palestine
A good, kind, brave and very funny man was killed on 4 January as he loaded the body of a young civilian killed by the Israeli occupation forces into an ambulance. Emergency medical workers, Arafa Hani Abed al-Dayem (35), and Alaa Ossama Sarhan (21), answered the call to retrieve two friends: Thaer Abed Hammad (19), who was wounded, and his friend Ali (19), who was killed while fleeing shelling by Israeli tanks. It was after 8:30am on Sunday and Thaer and Ali were in the Beit Lahia area, located in northwestern Gaza. The area is near the American school that had been bombed the day before, killing a 24-year-old civilian night watchman inside — tearing him apart and burning everything else that remained…
