Israel begins Gaza ground offensive
AlJazeera.net
The Israeli army has confirmed its troops have entered the Gaza Strip as it escalates its offensive on the eighth day of operations. Speaking to Al Jazeera, a spokesman for the Israeli foreign ministry said: “They [Israeli ground forces] will be completing the mission of the air force, going for Hamas headquarters and weapons caches and giving a blow to their capability to launch attacks into Israel.” Alan Fisher, Al Jazeera’s correspondent on the Israeli-Gaza border, said that the Israeli army had confirmed it had entered Gaza and that he had witnessed the movement of tanks and armoured vehicles in the area. Hamas has vowed to defeat the Israeli army following the invasion…

Gaza: In Defense of a Never Written Statement
By Abdul-Rahim Al-Shaikh – Jerusalem
…No one has the right to put the blame of the oppressor on the victim. No war criminal has the right to hold the family of his victims responsible for being close to the alleged military target. No one has the right to blame the victim for not leaving the site of bombardment. No one has the right to forget to forgive. No one has the right to forgive to forget. Those who were not martyred have no choice but to become martyrs. There is no duty for those who are not criminals but to chase the criminals. No one has the right to condemn resistance while awaiting its triumph no matter how great his political or symbolic capital is. No one has the right to equate between “wrestling fundamentalisms” while one is a victim and the other is a criminal…

US Weapons Killing Civilians in Gaza
Jason Ditz
…Among the tens of billions of dollars of weapons the United States delivers to Israel annually is the GBU-39 smart bomb, which Israel has been using heavily in its aerial strikes on the Gaza Strip. They’re smart in that they hit what they’re aiming at, but what they’re aiming at is a tiny strip of land teeming with civilians and in recent days fewer and fewer actual targets…

US blocks cease-fire, gives Israel carte blanche to continue killing in Gaza
Barry Grey,WSWS
As the Israeli devastation of Gaza enters its second week and signs point to an imminent ground invasion of the densely populated and impoverished Palestinian territory, the US government is working to block diplomatic initiatives for a cease-fire in order to give Israel a free hand to intensify its assault on the defenseless population. While Israeli planes, warships and missiles continued to level civilian buildings, mosques and homes, and thousands of Israeli troops with tanks, artillery and armored vehicles awaited the order to enter the Palestinian enclave, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice appeared outside the White House Friday morning following a briefing on the Gaza crisis with President George W. Bush. In a terse statement, Rice once again placed the blame for the Israeli aggression on Hamas and underscored Washington’s support for Israel’s rejection of cease-fire proposals from France, the European Union and a number of Arab governments…

Israel’s Righteous Fury and its Victims in Gaza
Ilan Pappe
My visit back home to the Galilee coincided with the genocidal Israeli attack on Gaza. The state, through its media and with the help of its academia, broadcasted one unanimous voice — even louder than the one heard during the criminal attack against Lebanon in the summer of 2006. Israel is engulfed once more with righteous fury that translates into destructive policies in the Gaza Strip. This appalling self-justification for the inhumanity and impunity is not just annoying, it is a subject worth dwelling on, if one wants to understand the international immunity for the massacre that rages on in Gaza… This righteous fury is a constant phenomenon in the Israeli, and before that Zionist, dispossession of Palestine. Every act whether it was ethnic cleansing, occupation, massacre or destruction was always portrayed as morally just and as a pure act of self-defense reluctantly perpetrated by Israel in its war against the worst kind of human beings…

Hastening an awaiting disaster
WRITTEN BY KRISTOFFER LARSSON
…The devastating terror against Gaza and its population, I dare say, is relatively small compared to the long-term damage caused by the siege. The vast unemployment and the problem with malnourishment are signs of an approaching mass starvation. The number of Gazans killed indirectly by Israel is much, much higher than the 420 murdered in the last seven days. By destroying governmental buildings, the infra-structure and every seed to self-governance, Israel is hastening the awaiting disaster. Best of all – they can pin the blame for it on Hamas…

Mass Graves Tell Iraq Invasion Episode
By Afif Sarhan, IOL Correspondent
Hussein Jomaa, 23, has been looking for his father and brother who disappeared since Iraq fell into the abyss of sectarian violence following the Samarra bombing. “My father was found in a mass grave two month ago but my brother still missing and I hope find him,” Jomaa told IslamOnline.net on Friday, January 2. Jomaa’s father and brother were abducted by a Shiite militia two years ago for hiding a Sunni family during the sectarian violence. “They just went out to buy some food and never came back again,” said Jomaa. “We were trying to make a difference and show that Iraqis don’t want sectarian violence, however, it was an insult to militants in Sadr district.” Iraq has plunged into the abyss of sectarian violence in 2006 following the bombing of Al-Askari mosque, a celebrated Shiite mosque, in Samarra. Dozens of mass graves have been found in recent weeks containing the bodies of many victims… Long queues in front of morgues have become a normal sight in Iraq as relatives thronged to recognize their beloved ones…”Was that what US brought to us, decomposed bodies from our loved ones? Is that democracy and freedom? US opened the doors for them to destroy the lives of thousands of innocent civilians…”

US gives Israel free rein on whether to invade Gaza
AFP
US President George W. Bush on Friday urged all able parties to press Hamas to stop firing rockets at Israel and secure a lasting ceasefire, after a week of heavy Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip. His administration meanwhile gave Israel free rein over whether to send ground troops into Gaza, despite growing criticism over its handling of a conflict that has killed more than 400 Palestinians, including civilians…

PALESTINE’S LONG TORMENT
Anindya Bhattacharyya, thepeoplesvoice.org
In 1917 the British foreign secretary Lord Balfour gave official backing to their colonial ambitions. He hoped that a Zionist state in Palestine would serve the interests of British imperialism. Zionist terror gangs drove its population from their homes during the creation of Israel in 1948.That event – known in Arabic as the Nakba (catastrophe) – saw 750,000 Palestinians ethnically cleansed. They were uprooted and driven out of their homes and homeland to the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and to other countries…

Ashdod Built on ‘Leveled’ Arab Suqrir
umkahlil
Ashdod has figured prominently in the western press because one Israeli woman died there as a result of a rocket attack. One hundred times as many Palestinian Arabs have died during Israel’s latest massacre, but the woman who died in Ashdod featured prominantly in a Newsweek story. The Israeli town Ashdod sits on the remains of ‘Arab Suqrir. It was established in 1955. According to Walid Khalidi in All That Remains: The Palestinian Villages Occupied and Depopulated by Israel in 1948, “Arab Suqrir was the subject of the first Haganah operational proposal to level a village . . . .” He cites an intelligence report that recommended: “The village should be destroyed completely and some males from the same village should be murdered” (80). The village wasn’t “physically destroyed until 24-28 August, during Operation Nikayon (”Cleansing”)” …

In Gaza, the Occupation Is An Unimaginable Horror
By Joharah Baker for MIFTAH
…Israel, the United States and Europe continue to demand a halt to the violence, first calling for a halt to the rockets. But even to refer to the bloodbath that is taking place in Gaza as “fighting” is absurd. Fighting between whom? Hamas and Israel? It is hardly a fight when one side has Apache helicopters, F-16 and F-18 fighter plans, Merkava tanks and heavy artillery, while the other has crudely made homemade rockets that rarely hit their targets, more often falling on empty lots or open fields. It is not a fight; it is aggression, not exclusively against Hamas but against the Palestinian people and their cause, and there is much to prove it. For one, a major point that is often overlooked or swept aside is the fact that Israel remains an occupying power in the Gaza Strip, even though it “withdrew” from the coastal area in 2004. There are no more Jewish settlements there, granted. However, Israel is still the boss, wielding complete control over the borders, the airspace and the entry and exit of goods into the Strip. For the past year and a half, it has imposed a crippling blockade on Gaza’s 1.5 million inhabitants, which has pushed the already impoverished Strip to the brink of a massive humanitarian disaster…

‘I expected an ambulance, but a donkey cart carried the injured’
Ewa Jasiewicz
…We awoke to survey the latest damage. The home of the al-Naim family had had its roof, walls, furniture and floors smashed by exploding debris. One piece which broke through into a bedroom was a metre long and more than 30cm wide. While talking to the family and filming the destruction we heard shattering bangs to our east. We made out way to Beit Hanoun hospital. People were agitated, crowds were gathering; I expected to see an ambulance hurtling round the corner and saw instead a donkey-drawn cart pulling three children and two male relatives. Twelve-year-old Haya was dead, her singed body quickly covered by a white sheet. Four-year-old Lamma died in front of us. Ismaeel, nine, came in breathing. “We think he’ll be ok, we need to x-ray his legs,” doctors said. [He died on Thursday morning.] The children died of internal injuries consistent with having been thrown in the air and bounced some 10 metres off the ground. They had gone to throw the rubbish out…

Emails document Gaza horror
GALEN EAGLE, Peterborough Examine
His emails offer a back-door glimpse. They put a human face to the headlines. “I have seen many many bodies. Believe me, it was like you have mixed bodies all over together, we do not know which leg is from whom or which hand from whom or head from whom,” writes 42-year-old Mahmoud Khalid from Gaza City… “What can I tell you, things are very bad,” Khalid writes. “The emergency room was full of bodies of men, women, kids of different ages. “The hospital was unable to handle such huge numbers…we have started to work but it was so difficult due to the shortage of the medical supplies.”…

Gaza war diary: Al Jazeera detained
By Alan Fisher in southern Israel, Aljazeera
…Our presence is suddenly the subject of attention from the Israeli army. Three vehicles surround us and ask what we’re doing. We explain, and they insist we hand over the tapes. Our local producer tries to tell them we have nothing that shows the army, but we’re told we’re filming in a closed military zone and co-operation is not optional. They take our camera. For four hours we are detained and no one can explain why. I’m told we were in a closed military area. When I point out that we didn’t film anything to do with the military, the soldier before me shrugs and says he must wait for his senior officer to decide how to progress…
