Resistance to the U.S. occupation in Iraq intensified for a fourth day in cities and town across Iraq bringing the death toll to at least 20 U.S. soldiers and over 150 Iraqis. The top U.S. administrator in Iraq declared a radical Shiite cleric an outlaw Monday after his supporters rioted in Baghdad and four other cities in fighting that killed at least 52 Iraqis, eight U.S. troops and a Salvadoran soldier.
White House: Iraq's Sadr Is Allied with Terrorists:
White House spokesman Scott McClellan sought to cast the uprising among Sadr's followers as an isolated development rather than a Shi'ite rebellion with sweeping public support.
Apaches swoop on Shia militiamen:
US helicopter gunships have been firing at targets in a Shia Muslim district of Baghdad on the second day of a revolt across Iraq by a religious militia.

U.S. helicopter gunships opened fire as tanks rumbled through Baghdad's sprawling Shuala district on Monday, but teenage militiamen with guns and knives were firmly in control when the clashes ended.

Bremer, it seems, has now helped to bring that confrontation about. A newspaper that was ignored by millions of Iraqis, but whose sarcastic criticism of Bremer is said to have personally annoyed him, might henceforth be known as the paper which started a Shi'ite insurrection.
34 killed after Shia call to revolt :
Violence in Iraq yesterday left at least 34 people dead, including nine allied soldiers, after a radical Shi'ite leader called for an uprising. Seven US soldiers were killed and more than 24 wounded in clashes with Shia militiamen in Sadr City.
Phase II of the Anti-Occupation Struggle Begins:
Earlier Muqtada Al-Sadr, the movement leader, had called on his forces to avoid violence against Coalition forces. As of Sunday, he has decided that the Coalition means permanently to exclude his group from power, and has decided to launch an uprising.
