VIDEO - A girl called Jewel
1/5/2010 - AlJazeera - On December 27, 2008 the Israeli military began a brutal air assault on the Gaza Strip that was to kill around 1,400 Palestinians and leave thousands of Gazans wounded. The death toll included a very high proportion of women and children. A special United Nations investigation after the war reported that the Israeli army had deliberately targeted civilians in actions that, it said, amounted to war crimes and in some respects crimes against humanity. Just days into the war, in early January, the extended Al Samouni family, some 48 men, women and children, was attacked in the homes they occupied together in the south of Gaza - and almost all of them were killed. Thirteen-year-old Almaza - 'jewel' - is one of the very few who survived the attack in which 30 members of her family died, many before her own eyes. 1/5/2010 - Jerusalem Post - Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon met with Britain's Attorney-General Baroness Scotland of Asthal in Jerusalem on Tuesday, to discuss the issue of changing UK law to prevent the arrest of Israeli officials and officers. During the meeting, Baroness Scotland said that she is aware of the importance that Israel attributes to finding an urgent solution to this problem, and that the British are currently considering different courses of action aimed at solving the problem. Ayalon called the current situation "insufferable," and said, "This will make it difficult for the two countries to maintain a normal relationship. "The deputy foreign minister also bewailed the manipulation that organizations hostile to Israel were making of British law to carry out their goals. He stressed that most Israeli citizens - not just political figures and high-ranking officers - serve in the IDF.

Israeli Military Officials Cancel Britain Trip
1/5/2010 - WAFA - Palestine News Agency - TEL AVIV, January 5, 2010 (WAFA)- A delegation of Israeli military officers canceled a visit to Britain out of fear that they would be arrested on war crimes charges. The cancellation of the visit, scheduled for last week, was announced Tuesday. It comes a month after Israeli opposition leader Tzipi Livni canceled a visit to Britain after learning that a London court had approved a warrant for her arrest on war crimes charges. The delegation of senior Israeli army officers had been invited by the British army. Their visit was put off after British authorities said they could not assure Israeli Foreign Ministry officials that the delegation would not be arrested. The warrants seek to charge Israeli officials with war crimes in connection with Israel’s Operation Cast Lead in Gaza last winter.

’Israel must compensate Iraq for Osirak’
1/5/2010 - Jerusalem Post - Iraq will demand that Israel pay compensation for bombing the unfinished nuclear reactor at Osirak in 1981, an Iraqi member of parliament told the Iraqi al-Sabah newspaper in an article published on Tuesday. Muhammad Naji Muhammad claimed that his government was planning to enlist the United Nation's help to pressure Israel into compensating Baghdad, according to a DPA report cited by Channel 10. " Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and the Foreign Ministry turned to the UN and the Security Council demanding that Israel pay us reparations for damage caused to the reactor in 1981," Muhammad was quoted as telling the newspaper. Baghdad is demanding that the UN establish a committee to assess the scope of the damage caused by the Israeli strike in order to calculate the appropriate compensation. The Iraqi demand is based on UN Security Council Resolution 487, which was drafted following the bombing of the reactor in June 1981.

The construction project was initiated and constructed by American Jewish millionaire Irving Moskowitz, who also owns the Shepherd Hotel in East Jerusalem.

#7 Latest On Attack Of Convoy People Hurt And Missing
1/5/2010 - Irish4Palestine - Ok I’m trying to calm down and gather as much information as possible. Here is the story from people at the scene. People we dont even know, who answered phones that belong to our boys who are missing right now! I need to preface this by saying that NONE of our boys can be located at this time!! One of their phones was answered by an Arabic man who found it on the ground and said the convoy members were currently under attack. Then later we tried to ring the other boys and got no answer either. Then we tried again later and ALL the phones were turned OFF they did not even ring! Later still, we tried Derek’s phone and a British lady answered named Pat. We do not know “Pat” she found Derek’s phone on the ground and answered it. She said that the whole thing happened when convoy members were still locked inside this gated compound, then suddenly a very large group of plain clothes “people”. . . .

More when we get it. At least we can breath now knowing they are alright for the moment. Thanks for everyones support. [end]

#9: Update On Convoy Attack
1/5/2010 - Irish4Palestine - Small amount of news to report. Still recovering from the last several hours of our boys being missing and under attack. That was an awful time! Especially when only their phones were found and not them!! So spoke to one of them again just now and they say 20 members were injured in the attack and there are some people for the convoy who are missing and cannot be found. For those following the convoy from Cork Ireland, just to let you know, I asked and your people on the convoy are all OK as well. Just thought you'd want to know that:) Up da Irish!! haven't heard about the Dungannon team, but I was told all the Irish are OK. Well done! More when we get it. What a night, had enough of this already let them in.

#10: Viva Palestina Update, Last One I Hope
1/6/2010 - Irish4Palestine - Many thanks to “D from Turkey” who gave us these links to videos of the pre-meditated attack tonight shown on Turkish television. The first link is a longer version, the second is a shorter version. Both are in Turkish, but no words are needed to see what happened, this is a disgrace! We spent almost 3 hours in a blind panic unable to locate our people, only their phones were found on the ground and answered by strangers. Some people are STILL missing. THIS is what it was like for us on this blog as it happened. God knows what tomorrow will bring after this attack. Hopefully the Egyptians have had enough fun and games and will now let them get on with their work of delivering the ambulances and aid to those who are in need of it.

A New York Welcome For The Gaza Freedom Marchers
1/5/2010 - Desert Peace - On the morning of January 4th, with the thermometer hovering at 20 degrees, people carrying extra coats, scarves, and gloves, gathered in front of the Israeli Consulate on 2nd Avenue in NYC to welcome home 13 New Yorkers who were returning from Egypt that morning. The 13 went there to join with 1,400 people from 42 countries and march in solidarity with the people of Gaza. The first thing the exuberant delegation wanted to do when they returned home was to tell the Israelis to lift the siege and free Gaza. A lengthily picket line was quickly formed. People carried signs that said “Free Gaza” and chanted. Surprised people, who appeared to be Israelis, came out the building that houses the Consulate. The police arrived and asked those picketing to do so across the street. Negotiations were attempted. Eventually the police issued a 5 minute pre-arrest warning.

1/5/2010 - The Raw Story - AFP - Washington is pushing a plan to restart Israeli-Palestinian peace talks that foresees reaching a final deal in two years and agreeing on permanent borders in nine months, a daily said Monday. The paper said that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was expected to press Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas to agree to the plan during a meeting later Monday in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh. There were no immediate comments on the report from Palestinian, Egyptian or US officials. However, Israel's hardline Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman spoke out Monday against setting time limits to talks. International Solidarity Movement

Fanning the Flames of Freedom from Cairo to Gaza and Beyond
1/5/2010 - International Solidarity Movement - Emily Ratner, Dissident Voice, Jan 3 - "The cause of freedom is not the cause of a race or a sect, a party or a class-it is the cause of humankind, the very birthright of freedom. "- Anna Julia Cooper, page 27, my US passport -- The Gaza Freedom March announced the Cairo Declaration to End Israeli Apartheid on January 1st, and so yesterday hundreds of Marchers smuggled freedom’s smoke signals in our luggage as we climbed into buses, vans, and taxis and made a mad dash for the Rafah border crossing. My own van was pulled over at the first checkpoint on the way out of Cairo, where we sat on a dusty curb for two hours before being forced to turn back. As we waited for guards to run our passport numbers and strategized about next steps, a small bus filled with our French friends sped by on the other side of the road, headed back to Cairo.

Several fishing boats have been returned but with damages and equipment missing, and at least one hassaka (small fishing boat) was stolen again.

Sailing into trouble: 'To Gaza with Love' reviewed
1/5/2010 - International Solidarity Movement - Asa Winstanley, The Electronic Intifada, 4 January - To Gaza with Love is a documentary by Aki Nawaz for Iran's English-language channel Press TV. It is an account of the first boats that successfully broke the siege of Gaza in August 2008. The filmmakers traveled to the Gaza Strip with the Free Gaza Movement, which organized the trip. The subjective format of the film works well - presenter Yvonne Ridley speaks to the camera in an amiable video diary style, while Nawaz narrates to add context. The Free Gaza Movement is a group of activists from around the world who decided to sail to Gaza from Cyprus to break the Israeli-enforced siege. The idea came about in response to Israel's claim that, since the 2005 "disengagement," it no longer occupies the coastal strip. Despite withdrawing its settlers, Israel still remains in control of all the borders, airspace and coast.

Unbreakable in Cairo
1/5/2010 - International Solidarity Movement - Dana Elborno, The Electronic Intifada, 4 January - Though I have lived most of my life in and around Chicago, it has never been my complete home. My sisters and I were born as first-generation Palestinian-Americans coming from Kuwait and for this reason our lives in Chicago always felt temporary - we were only supposed to stay until the Gulf War was over, we finished school, the occupation ended, the siege was broken, etc. The only accepted rhetoric about our presence in America was and continues to be, "This is not our home, we are from Gaza. "The semantics of a Gazan home are lovely, but the only sense of Gaza I have is as fleeting as gusts of dust that blow off of old pictures. These faded images of a time and place that no longer exist leave us with nostalgia for memories we never even lived. It is the most porous of identities and I feel the gaps palpably.

Candlelight demonstration remembers the martyrs of Nablus and Gaza
1/5/2010 - International Solidarity Movement - 2 January - A demonstration was held in the northern West Bank city of Nablus last night to mark the anniversary of the 3-week assault launched on Gaza one year ago that left over 1,400 Palestinians dead, and to mourn the assassination of 3 men by Israeli soldiers in Nablus last week. Demonstrators filled Nablus' centre, Al-Duwar, and lit candles in honour of those who died. Speeches were made by local activists from the Tanweer Palestinian Cultural Enlightenment Forum, An Najah University, the Nablus Women's Union and international activists from ISM, all who declared their solidarity with those suffering from the crippling siege of Gaza and condemning the atrocities caused by Israel's war crimes. Protesters then marched by candlelight, singing and chanting, through the Old City to the homes of Raed Sarakji and Ghassan Abu Sharkh where they were murdered by Israeli soldiers on the 26th of December.

When Does It Become Genocide?
Nadia Hijab, CounterPunch 1/5/2010
      Alarmingly Close in Gaza
During a visit to Ramallah a year ago while the Israeli bombardment of Gaza was underway, I shared my fears with a close Palestinian friend. "It may sound insane, but I think the Israelis’ real objective is to see them all dead."
My friend told me not to be silly, the assault was horrific, but it was not mass killing. I said that wasn’t the issue: This was a population already very vulnerable to disease, ill-health, and malnutrition after years of siege, with its infrastructure rotted, its water and food contaminated. Israel’s war would surely push the people over the brink, especially if the siege was maintained -- as it has been.
In other words, Israel would not directly kill tens of thousands of Palestinians, but it would create the conditions for tens of thousands to die. Any epidemic could finish the job. My friend fell silent at these words, but still shook his head in disbelief.
Two things have changed since last year: More people have started to apply the term "genocide" to what Israel is doing to Gaza. And not only is Israel being directly accused but also, increasingly, Egypt.
Is it genocide? "The Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide" -- a clear, concise document adopted by the United Nations in December 1948 -- states that genocide is any of five acts committed "with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group." more.. e-mail

Unbreakable in Cairo
Dana Elborno writing from Cairo, Electronic Intifada 1/4/2010
Though I have lived most of my life in and around Chicago, it has never been my complete home. My sisters and I were born as first-generation Palestinian-Americans coming from Kuwait and for this reason our lives in Chicago always felt temporary -- we were only supposed to stay until the Gulf War was over, we finished school, the occupation ended, the siege was broken, etc. The only accepted rhetoric about our presence in America was and continues to be, "This is not our home, we are from Gaza." The semantics of a Gazan home are lovely, but the only sense of Gaza I have is as fleeting as gusts of dust that blow off of old pictures. These faded images of a time and place that no longer exist leave us with nostalgia for memories we never even lived. It is the most porous of identities and I feel the gaps palpably.
For this reason -- and maybe more so, for our political agenda -- my older sister and I signed up for the Gaza Freedom March. Aside from the family history that draws us to Gaza, we are unwavering in our belief that the siege must end and the humanity of Palestinians in Gaza has been grossly disregarded throughout this whole catastrophe that began more than 60 years ago, and especially during Israel’s assault on Gaza last winter. The Gaza Freedom March gave us an outlet to voice these beliefs and mobilize with a global community of like-minded activists -- almost 1,400 of them from over 40 countries.
When we made our way to Cairo, the march that was planned to take place side by side with Palestinians in Gaza quickly turned into a round of protests against the Egyptian government after they canceled our permits to travel to and enter the besieged territory. Our personal narrative quickly became overpowered by the political situation between Egypt, Israel, the Arab World and the "West." We protested for four days straight. In contexts like these, all of us fighting for the freeing of Palestine are Palestinians. There was a beautiful strength in our numbers and diversity. We were empowered and united, fighting to go to Gaza together. more.. e-mail

The Need to Support the Fledging Television Industry in Palestine
Daoud Kuttab, This Week in Palestine 12/30/2009
Television production is rather new in Palestine. Until 1994 Palestinians had access to regional and international television stations. Palestine TV was born with the Oslo Accords when Palestinian negotiators extracted the concession from the Israelis on the reasoning that radio and television were needed for the presidential and parliamentary elections that were due to take place as part of the PLO-Israeli Memorandum of Understanding. The same agreement had a clause for licensing other Palestinian radio and TV stations within the context of a joint Israeli-Palestinian technical committee. Over a period of 15 years Israel basically vetoed any properly licensed stations by refusing every request to allow the committee to meet. This, however, has not stopped the mushrooming of tens of local radio and TV stations that have “half” a license.
The stations have a piece of paper from the Palestinian Authority to work, but in terms of the International Telecommunications Union (the body that allots frequencies to countries), all the privately established stations are nothing more than pirate stations. This, of course, has resulted in the lack of any serious investment going into these stations and, conversely, the station owners have flaunted intellectual property regulations. Major football games, Hollywood movies, and Arab soaps are broadcast on these terrestrial stations without any restrictions.
When it comes to terrestrial broadcasting, the political geography and physical terrain of Palestine favours stations that are largely confined to city limits. For the most part local TV stations provide quality broadcasting within the limits of a particular city only. With such limited audiences and with the absence of any serious investment (because of the shakiness of the PA-only “licenses”) these stations spend as little time and effort as possible on original production... more.. e-mail

Photostory: Commemorating the assault on Gaza
Electronic Intifada: 5 Jan 2010 - Approximately one year ago, Israel unleashed its assault on the Gaza Strip -- amidst its ongoing siege and occupation -- killing more than 1,400 Palestinians, the majority of them civilians. Thirteen Israelis were killed during the attacks, most of them soldiers. The attacks sparked mass demonstrations around the world in solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. The following images are from around the one year anniversary, when many groups around the world again led demonstrations to show their continued solidarity with Palestine.

Gaza and the path to accountability
Electronic Intifada: 5 Jan 2010 - The US, UK and Canadian governments are all embroiled in attempts to immunize themselves from accountability under international law for their own actions in the so-called War on Terror. Protecting Israel from international law has therefore acquired an added urgency, not only in the interests of the Zionist regime, but also in the interests of the US and its two staunchest allies in the War on Terror, Britain and Canada, to remain beyond the reach of international law. Sunera Thobani comments for The Electronic Intifada.

Gaza Freedom Marchers issue the "Cairo Declaration" to end Israeli apartheid
Electronic Intifada: 4 Jan 2010 - Gaza Freedom Marchers have approved a declaration aimed at accelerating the global campaign for boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against Israeli apartheid, calling for a global mass, democratic anti-apartheid movement to work in full consultation with Palestinian civil society to implement the Palestinian call for BDS.

1000 Protestors Demand Freedom for Gaza
Palestine Monitor: 5 Jan 2010 - Around 1000 people gathered on New Year's Eve by Erez crossing on the Israeli side of border with Gaza to protest against the ongoing siege imposed by Israel on Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. As part of the Gaza Freedom March initiative, the demonstration began at around 11.00 am with protestors waving banners and chanting for the removal of the blockade on Gaza, as well as expressing solidarity with its residents. Photo by Lazar Simeonov The event was supposed to coincide with an internationally coordinated March on the Gazan side of the crossing, but Egypt denied over 1400 marchers the right to enter Gaza from Rafah. This explains why there was widespread anger towards the Egyptian Government, who have been perceived as “cooperating with the siege”. Many of the demonstraters were Palestinians currently living inside Israel, and some were holders of Jerusalem IDs who came with the grassroots organization The...

The Iron Wall
Palestine Monitor: 4 Jan 2010 - SOMETHING ODD, almost bizarre, is going on in Egypt these days. About 1400 activists from all over the world gathered there on their way to the Gaza Strip. On the anniversary of the “Cast Lead” War, they intended to participate in a non-violent demonstration against the ongoing blockade, which makes the life of 1.5 million inhabitants of the Strip intolerable. At the same time, protest demonstrations were to take place in many countries. In Tel-Aviv, too, a big protest was planned. The “monitoring committee” of the Arab citizens of Israel was to organize an event on the Gaza border. When the international activists arrived in Egypt, a surprise awaited them. The Egyptian government forbade their trip to Gaza. Their buses were held up at the outskirts of Cairo and turned back. Individual protesters who succeeded in reaching the Sinai in regular buses were taken off them. The Egyptian security forces...

A Journey to the Gaza Border
Palestine Chronicle: 5 Jan 2010 - By Kim Bullimore Its New Year's Eve and my team mate and I are on our way to Israel's Erez Crossing, one of the 6 border crossings into Gaza which has been repeatedly closed by the Zionist state as part of its illegal collective punishment of the Palestinian people in Gaza. We have joined three bus loads of Israeli and Palestinian activists in Jaffa to make the hour long journey to the Gaza border crossing to protest Israel's ongoing siege. As we wait for the buses in Jaffa, I look around the slowly gathering crowd and recognize some of the faces from demonstrations in the Occupied West Bank: several of the courageous and dedicated activists from Anarchists Against the Wall, as well as some activists from Gush Shalom and others from Ta'ayush. But there are many I don't recognize - young people, as well as older folk - all of whom are outraged at Israel's repeated war crimes and collective punishment of the Palestinian people of Gaza. It’s now been a year since Operation Cast Lead, the Israeli war which killed more than 1400 Gazan Palestinians and more than two and half years since Israel declared the region an "enemy entity", imposing an almost total siege on 1.5 million people. In September last year, the Goldstone report provided the most accurate and damning account of Israel's actions in Gaza both during Operation Cast Lead, as well as Israel's actions before and after its brutal all out war on Gaza . According...

Israeli Use of Painful Shackling As a Form of Torture
Palestine Chronicle: 5 Jan 2010 - By Stephen Lendman Founded in 1990 to highlight a growing problem, the Public Committee Against Torture in Israel (PACTI - stoptorture.org) "believes that torture and ill treatment of any kind and under all circumstances is incompatible with the moral values of democracy and the rule of law. (It) advocates for all persons - Israelis, Palestinians, labor immigrants and other foreigners in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT) - in order to protect them from torture and ill treatment by the Israeli interrogation and law enforcement authorities." They include the Israeli Police, the General Security Service (GSS), the Israeli Prison Service (IPS), and the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). In June 2009, PACTI published a report titled, "Shackling As A Form of Torture and Abuse." Its findings are discussed below. PACTI reviews the "serious phenomenon" of shackling Palestinian detainees "in a systematic manner and throughout all stages of detention and interrogation." Its purpose is to dehumanize and inflict pain, suffering, punishment, intimidation, and discrimination as a way of lawlessly extracting information even though experts acknowledge that torture is ineffective, counterproductive, and, of course, illegal under all circumstances at all times with no exceptions allowed ever. Israel's use of shackling "has snowballed almost out of control....even when it serves no real" purpose, and it begins at the time of arrest. Plastic handcuffs are used "that can be tightened but cannot be released or halted." They inflict pain, especially when hands are cuffed from behind, the most common way. Shackling continues during interrogation,...

A Jewish American's Evolving View of Israel
Palestine Chronicle: 5 Jan 2010 - By Steven R. Feldman In an argument about the origins of the Israel-Palestine conflict with a Jewish friend, I mentioned 'Plan D, the secret plans of the Jewish army to expel Palestinians.' My friend thought I was a raving lunatic, spouting a conspiracy theory promoted by anti-Semites. I didn’t used to sound that way. Growing up in Washington, D.C., I attended the Hebrew Academy, a school that my grandfather helped to found and that my father had helped lead. Like other people who attend religious schools, we were taught that we had a special relationship with God and that our group had a higher moral character. As Jews, we learned how we had been an oppressed people. As American Jews, we believed in American and Jewish values of honesty, justice, truth and peace. We took pride in Israel, a democratic country that shared our values and that represented an end to our oppression. Our role in reclaiming Israel was very special. We Jews had come to an unredeemed holy land of deserts and swamps, and we made that land bloom. I was proud to be a part of it. Like my classmates, I collected nickels and dimes, saving to plant trees in Israel. Being a Jew made me part owner of the country. The Story We Were Taught We Jews had returned to Israel to live in peace with the small local population already there. We bought land from them. And when the evil Arab states — jealous of our...

No Right to Health in Gaza, Mr. Brown
Palestine Chronicle: 4 Jan 2010 - By Stuart Littlewood – London Britain's prime minister, Gordon Brown, marked the start of the New Year in a way that many campaigners for justice and liberty will find lamentable. The charity MAP (Medical Aid for Palestinians) had written an open letter to Brown asking him to "urgently use all available diplomatic means to bring an immediate and unconditional end to the blockade of the Gaza Strip". It reminded Brown that a year after the assault on Gaza, in which almost 1,400 Palestinians were killed and more than 5,300 injured, civilians continued to pay a devastating price. "Across the Gaza Strip, over 3,530 homes were completely destroyed and more than 2,850 severely damaged. Tens of thousands more homes suffered structural damage." A recent MAP survey of the most vulnerable families shows that only 2% have been able to repair their homes from damage inflicted in last winter's bombardment. Families now face the winter in tents or in the rubble of their destroyed homes. Furthermore “the blockade is directly compromising one of the people of Gaza's most basic human rights; the right to health. Israeli authorities continue to routinely, and without explanation, block or delay the entry of medical supplies and equipment, leaving hospitals less able to cope. As hospitals falter, patients seeking care outside the Gaza Strip are routinely denied exit for life-saving medical treatment...” And that’s not all. A public health disaster is looming: with no spare parts for maintenance or repair, water and sewage treatment facilities cannot function....
