"Our Palestinian partner Abu Mazen [Mahmoud Abbas] is problematic. Does he represent all of the Palestinian people? It is clear that he does not represent Gaza and that his legitimacy in the West Bank is in doubt," Lieberman told public radio and quoted by AFP. "To sign an accord with Abu Mazen would be to sign a deal with the leader of Fatah," the president's political party, he added. "That said, I hope there will be a meeting with Abu Mazen. It is important that there be political negotiations, and we are ready for that - as long as there are no preconditions. "Our policy is clear to all and I think it also became clear over the weekend - to respond aggressively to any firing at our territory and at our communities," he said at the opening of his weekly Cabinet meeting. "There is no doubt that this policy, in addition to Operation Cast Lead, has increased deterrence against attack on our communities," he said, referring to Israel's name for the three-week offensive Israel waged on Gaza last winter that left 1,400 Palestinians dead. Before dawn on Saturday Israeli warplanes struck targets across the Gaza Strip in the most intense bombardment in weeks. Witnesses also reported Israeli tank and artillery fire in several locations.

Hamas urges clerics to reverse Gaza wall edict
1/3/2010 - Gaza - Ma'an - Hamas on Sunday urged leading Islamic clerics in Egypt to reverse a recent edict supporting the construction of a metal wall cutting off smuggling tunnels under the border with the Gaza Strip. It emerged late last week that scholars at Cairo's Al-Azhar University, Sunni Islam's highest seat of learning, issued a fatwa in favor of the wall. "It is one of Egypt's legitimate rights to place a barrier that prevents the harm from the tunnels under Rafah, which are used to smuggle drugs and other [contraband] that threaten Egypt's stability," the newspaper Al-Masri Al-Yom quoted the scholars as saying, according to AFP. "Various pressures the Palestinians are trying to drag them again to the fruitless maze of negotiations and to go chasing the illusion of misleading American and Israeli solutions," the PFLP said in a statement issued from its offices in Gaza. The secular PFLP has joined Islamists historically in opposing the peace process with Israel, which it sees as slanted toward coaxing Palestinians to make more concessions. The group called on the international community, "if they are interested in justice and peace, to move responsibly and urgently to lift the siege of Gaza and rebuild tens of thousands of homes and establishments and release thousands of prisoners from Israeli jails. "

1/3/2010 - Bethlehem - Ma'an - President Mahmoud Abbas met on Sunday evening with Egyptian intelligence chief Omar Sulaiman, the powerful official in charge of Hamas-Fatah reconciliation talks, among other issues. " On Monday Abbas is scheduled to meet with Egyptian counterpart Hosni Mubarak, according to WAFA. The meetings come amid renewed activity on at least two fronts for Abbas: a possible resumption of negotiations with Israel and a possible reconciliation with Hamas. Earlier on Sunday Hamas Political Bureau chief Khalid Mash'al announced, after weeks of political stalemate, that the Palestinian rival parties were in the "final stages" of reconciliation. "

Mash’al: Hamas, Fatah in ’final stages’ of reconcilliation
1/3/2010 - Bethlehem - Ma'an/Agencies - Hamas leader Khalid Mash'al said on Sunday the group was in the final stages of ending a power struggle with the rival Fatah movement after he held talks with Saudi officials in Riyadh. "We achieved great strides toward achieving reconciliation," Mash'al told reporters at the Foreign Ministry during a visit to the Saudi capital, according to Reuters news agency. "We are in the final stages now. " He also reiterated that Hamas has points that it wants revised in an Egyptian proposal for reconciliation with Fatah. "We all agree that the signing of the [reconciliation] will take place in Cairo," he said. Reuters quoted Saudi officials saying Mash'al met with Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal in connection with reconciliation efforts. Ramallah MoH: Hamas bans surgical society elections
1/3/2010 - Ramallah - Ma'an - The Ramallah-based Ministry of Health accused Hamas on Sunday of preventing the elections for the Palestinian Surgeons' Society (PSS) by taking over its Gaza headquarters. The Ministry said in an official statement that the shutdown was a result of Hamas' "rejection of democratic processes" and unions' freedom as defined by the Palestinian law, adding that the prevention of elections for the PSS was considered an obstruction of scientific development in Gaza, which is vitally needed in the besieged Strip. The statement added that Hamas had escalated disturbances against professional and medical unions in order to prevent elections at a time when Hamas' popularity is in decline, it said, alleging that the movement appoints its affiliates as members of these societies in order to take control.

Separately Hamas accused PA security forces of arresting four of the movement's affiliates on Sunday from the West Bank districts of Nablus and Jenin. Settler tunnel causes another road collapse in Silwan, East Jerusalem
1/3/2010 - International Solidarity Movement - At around 4pm, on Saturday 2 January 2010 part of a main road in the Palestinian neighbourhood of Silwan collapsed. The section of road runs above tunneling work carried out by the Elad settler organisation. Despite the road collapsing in the mid-afternoon, it was not until 8pm that Israeli police arrived at the scene, after an Israeli bus serving the settler population drove into the hole in the road. Silwan is a Palestinian village on the hills south of the Old City of Jerusalem, captured in 1967 by the Israeli army. It is one of several neighbourhoods in East Jerusalem where the Israeli state and settler organisations are forcing Palestinians from their homes. Almost 90 houses in the area are currently threatened with demolition, potentially displacing 1,000 – 1,500 residents and no construction permits have been issued for Palestinians in the area since 1967.

The iron wall
Uri Avnery, Ma’an News Agency 1/3/2010
Something odd, almost bizarre, is going on in Egypt these days.
About 1,400 activists from all over the world gathered there on their way to the Gaza Strip. On the anniversary of the Cast Lead War, they intended to participate in a non-violent demonstration against the ongoing blockade, which makes the life of 1.5 million inhabitants of the Strip intolerable.
At the same time, protest demonstrations were to take place in many countries. In Tel-Aviv, too, a big protest was planned. The "œmonitoring committee" of the Arab citizens of Israel was to organize an event on the Gaza border.
When the international activists arrived in Egypt, a surprise awaited them. The Egyptian government forbade their trip to Gaza. Their buses were held up at the outskirts of Cairo and turned back. Individual protesters who succeeded in reaching the Sinai in regular buses were taken off them. The Egyptian security forces conducted a regular hunt for the activists.
The angry activists besieged their embassies in Cairo. On the street in front of the French embassy, a tent camp sprang up which was soon surrounded by the Egyptian police. American protesters gathered in front of their embassy and demanded to see the ambassador. Several protesters who are over 70 years old started a hunger strike. Everywhere, the protesters were held up by Egyptian elite units in full riot gear, while red water cannon trucks were lurking in the background. Protesters who tried to assemble in Cairo"™s central Tahrir (liberation) Square were mishandled. more.. e-mail

Israel Rules
Paul Craig Roberts, CounterPunch 12/30/2009
The Votes of the Morons will Prevail
On Christmas eve, the New York Times delivered forth a call for war. “There’s only one way to stop Iran,” declared Alan J. Kuperman, and that is “military air strikes against Iran’s nuclear facilities.”
Kuperman is described as the “director of the Nuclear Proliferation Prevention Program at the University of Texas at Austin,” but his Christmas eve call to war relies on disinformation and contradiction, not on objective scholarly analysis.
For example, Kuperman contradicts the unanimous report of America’s 16 intelligence agencies, the reports of the International Atomic Energy Agency, and Russian intelligence with his claim that Iran has a nuclear weapon program. Astonishingly, it does not occur to Kuperman that readers might wonder how an academic bureaucrat in Austin, Texas, has better information than these authorities.
Kuperman is so determined to damn President Obama’s plan to have other countries enrich Iran’s uranium for Iran’s nuclear energy program and medical isotopes that he commits astounding blunders. After claiming that Iran has a “bomb program,” Kuperman claims that “Iran’s uranium contains impurities” and that Ahmadinejad’s threat “to enrich uranium domestically to the 20 per cent level . . . is a bluff, because even if Iran could further enrich its impure uranium, it lacks the capacity to fabricate the uranium into fuel elements.”
What was the New York Times op ed editor thinking when he approved Kuperman’s article?.... more.. e-mail

Tactics of desperation: using false accusations of 'anti-Semitism' as a weapon to silence criticism of Israel’s behaviour
Ulli Diemer, Redress 12/30/2009
Ulli Diemer argues that as world public opinion turns against Israel, its racist apartheid regime and its occupation, the Zionist state and its lobbies have turned to attempts to outlaw criticism of Israel by labelling it as “anti-Semitism” – attempts that need to be exposed and challenged as a serious threat to basic freedoms.
”At the same time as it attempts to crush internal resistance, the Israeli state, aided by its supporters in the United States and Canada, has launched extremely aggressive and well-financed propaganda campaigns abroad whose goal is to counteract the decline in support for Israel.
“A telling characteristic of these campaigns is that they by and large do not focus on attempting to justify Israel’s behaviour...
“Instead, the focus has shifted to attempting to shut down criticism of Israel by targeting the most outspoken critics with crude smear tactics and outright censorship.”
For more than 60 years, Israel has engaged in an unceasing campaign to dispossess Palestinians of their land and their rights. Its ability to do this has depended on three factors in particular:
     * overwhelming military superiority;
     * keeping public opinion, especially in North America and Europe, on its side; and
     * making ordinary working-class Israeli Jews believe that it is in their interest to support Israel’s Zionist elite rather than making common cause with ordinary Palestinians. more.. e-mail

Saber, patience
In Gaza: 3 Jan 2010 - “I haven’t been on my land since we harvested the wheat last August. It’s too dangerous. There was an Israeli operation here yesterday…6 tanks and 4 bulldozers. I could see them from my rooftop in the village, but didn’t know if they’d destroyed my land.” Abdul Nasser Abu Taima has 15 dunams of agricultural land roughly 400 m from the Green Line border dividing Gaza and Israel. Until a few years ago, he had a home on and lived off the land. Israeli bulldozers destroyed his house and razed his land. “That was our home,” he says, picking up a piece of piping with a chunk of foundation still attached,...

The Israel Lobby's War on Al Manar TV
Palestine Chronicle: 3 Jan 2010 - By Franklin Lamb - Beirut Having inherited the Bush administration's rising stack of terrorism lists, President Obama's team had expressed interest in culling them 'so they are more accurate and manageable and Americans experience less stress', according to Homeland Security director Janet Napolitano. These lists, plus the reported existence of others that have not been made public, are supposed to reduce the fear and stress on Americans just knowing there are such lists and that someone is ‘watching out’. In many cases travelers experience more stress because they never know when Transportation Security Authority (TSA) agents at airports might eye a ‘hit’ on a computer screen, lunge into action and ruin a trip. Duplicate names on various lists plus the difficulty of getting oneself off the lists have led to increasing pressure on the Obama administration to refine the concept of who really is a terrorist. The various “T” and watch lists are swelling annually by thousands of names-some quite similar leading to confusion and uncertainly who really is and isn’t on and who is on but shouldn’t be and vice versa. As of Christmas Eve, the ‘Terrorism Watch List’ reportedly included some 900,000 names with a "selectee" list with somewhere close to 30,000 people within the higher-risk category, and a "no-fly" list with an estimated 10,000 names of people who are not allowed to board planes. Today it’s anyone’s guess who is on but shouldn’t be and who is off but should be on. All passengers departing the US...

Israel's East Jerusalem Linked Settlement Expansion
Palestine Chronicle: 3 Jan 2010 - By Stephen Lendman On February 1, 2009, the International Solidarity Movement reported that Israel continues its E 1 area homes and infrastructure work that includes linking its Ma'ale Adummim settlement with East Jerusalem and other settlements around it. It said Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, while in office, promised to expand E 1 development - the land northeast of Jerusalem, west of Ma'ale Adummim comprising about 12 square kilometers, all of it illegally annexed. On November 15, 2009, the International Middle East Media Center reported that construction began in Ras al-Amud, Pisgat Ze'ev and elsewhere in East Jerusalem as part of Israel's scheduled 3,000 unit project. On November 18, Al Jazeera headlined, "Israel moves to expand settlement," saying approval was given to construct 900 housing units in East Jerusalem's Gilo settlement. Overall, Israel's E 1 Plan involves building about 15,000 new homes, a large industrial zone, hotels, other recreational facilities, a police station, garbage dump and more to be shared by Occupied Jerusalem and Ma'ale Adummim settlers. Israel's 121 West Bank/East Jerusalem official settlements, another 100 so-called "unauthorized outposts," and 12 Israeli (de facto settlement) neighborhoods annexed to Jerusalem's municipal area are illegal under international law, including Fourth Geneva's Article 49 stating: "Individual or mass forcible transfers, as well as deportations of protected persons from occupied territory to the territory of the Occupied Power or to that of any other country, occupied or not, are prohibited, regardless of the motive." In addition, UN Resolutions 446, 452, 465 and others condemned Israel's...
