13/12/04 Two Books by Palestinian Writers

From: Palestinian General Delegation

Two books by Palestinian authors have just been published in the U.K

1- Suad Amiry: Sharon and my mother-in-law. Ramallah diaries.
2- Naim Attalah: The old ladies of Nazareth.

Both are wonderful to read and will make an appreciated gift item.

1- Suad Amiry

In January 2005, Granta Books will publish Sharon and My Mother-in-Law: Ramallah Diairies by Suad Amiry. Surprisingly funny, and refreshingly different from any other writings on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, Sharon and My Mother-in-Law, describes Suad Amiry’s experience of living on the West Bank from the early eighties to the present.

‘Suad Amiry’s humour, warmth and irrepressible humanity bounce off every page’
Elizabeth Laird, author of A Little Piece of Ground

‘Sharon and My Mother-in-Law is an amusing book, which oscillates brilliantly between the tragic and the comic. Souad Amiry’s weapon is irony, and she wields it with a great deal of finesse and intelligence’ Le Figaro

Rights to Sharon and My Mother-in-Law have been sold in 11 countries so far including Germany, Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Denmark, France, Italy and Israel and it recently won the prestigious Viareggio Prize in Italy. With a wickedly sharp ear for dialogue, and an eye for telling details of human behavior, Suad Amiry has written a wonderful and very funny book about the absurdity (and agony) of life in the Occupied Territories

Sharon and My Mother-in-Law is a hardback and will be available in all good bookshops at £12.99 or direct from the Granta website at a 30% discount – www.granta.com

2- Naim Attalah

This is a moving story of two old ladies who lived in the biblical town of Nazareth. They are sisters, one briefly married then widowed, the other a spinster. They live sparsely and carefully, in tune with their surroundings, adapting to the rhythms of nature to eke out a living. The son of the brief marriage interrupts their simple life; he has become a stranger. It is his son, the grandson, who is most important to them.

In this lyrical journey Naim Attallah captures the purity and simplicity of their lives and evokes the sounds and smells of a small Palestinian town, unchanged through the ages. The old ladies’ qualities – courage, fortitude, determination, stoicism, and their loving kindness – shine out from these pages, a testament to a way of life that is increasingly remote.

The book is on sale at: Heywood Hill Bookshop, 10 Curzon Street, London W1

and is published by Quartet Books and can also be ordered through your usual bookshop.
