Behind the crisis in the Bush administration
Brian Becker, Socialism and Liberation
…The real problem with Bush for the U.S. capitalist establishment is that the Iraq war and occupation have failed on a fundamental political as well as military level. Militarily, the U.S. government spent more than $300 billion and committed hundreds of thousands of troops. Yet it is further from dealing a “knockout blow” to the resistance than at any time in the last three years. Throughout the former colonial and semi-colonial world, the people identify with the anti-colonial resistance of the Iraqis. Every day that the Iraqi people successfully tie up the much-vaunted U.S. military machine becomes a source of inspiration for all those who live under the heel of the U.S.-imposed regime of IMF austerity programs…

Even Confiding With God Doesn’t Compensate for Bush’s Brain
Walter C. Uhler
…But, like America’s evangelicals, we should have taken Bush at his word in 1999, when he smugly asserted: “Nobody needs to tell me what I believe. But I do need somebody to tell me where Kosovo is.” Unfortunately, too few of us failed to state that what he was offering us—a core of ignorance and incompetence, especially in foreign affairs, shrouded by faith in Jesus—was inadequate for presidential decision making. As a consequence, America not only got a President to whom God supposedly confides, but also a President who permitted a cabal led by Dick Cheney, Don Rumsfeld and a handful of Zionist neocons to show him where Iraq is. Now—given his debacle in Iraq—it should be obvious to all Americans that even confiding with God doesn’t compensate for Bush’s brain…

Tomgram: How (Not) to Withdraw from Iraq
Tom Engelhardt
…If you pay attention not to the war of words or the storm of confusing withdrawal proposals, but to four bedrock matters, you’ll have a far better sense of where we’re really heading. These are air power, permanent bases, an “American” Kurdistan, and oil; and, not surprisingly, they coincide with the great uncovered, or barely covered, stories of the war. In the present flurry of withdrawal discussions, only air power, thanks to Hersh, is getting any attention. The others have so far gone largely or totally unmentioned — and yet, without them, none of this makes any sense at all…

4 US Troops Killed in Push against Iraqi Rebels
Kirk Semple, The New York Times
The American military said today that four American troops died, including two marines who were killed in combat operations in the rebellious province of Anbar, where military commanders have pressed a series of intensive sweeps to disrupt insurgent networks in advance of national elections on Dec. 15. The two marines, both with Regimental Combat Team 8, Second Marine Division, were killed Wednesday by small-arms fire in separate incidents in Fallujah, 30 miles west of Baghdad, the American military said…

SADDAM FOR PRESIDENT
Malcom Lagauche
On November 30, 2005, Al-Jazeera News ran an article called “Saddam ‘Urged’ to Contest Elections. Here is the beginning of the piece: Saddam Hussein’s defense team has been inundated with requests from Iraqis to have the ousted leader run in Iraq’s upcoming elections, a member of the team says. “We received scores of verbal and written requests from Iraqi citizens, the man-in-the-street kind, appealing to have President Saddam run for elections,” said lawyer Issam Ghazawi on Wednesday. The lawyers maintain that Saddam is still Iraq’s legal president. Because of this, although they were happy about Saddam’s popularity as shown by citizens, it creates a quandary…

Kurdish Oil Deal Shocks Iraq’s Political Leaders
A Norwegian company begins drilling in the north without approval from Baghdad.
Borzou Daragahi LATimes Staff Writer
A controversial oil exploration deal between Iraq’s autonomy-minded Kurds and a Norwegian company got underway this week without the approval of the central government here, raising a potentially explosive issue at a time of heightened ethnic and sectarian tensions. The Kurdistan Democratic Party, which controls a portion of the semiautonomous Kurdish enclave in northern Iraq, last year quietly signed a deal with Norway’s DNO to drill for oil near the border city of Zakho. Iraqi and company officials describe the agreement as the first involving new exploration in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003…

Bush, Democrats back protracted war in Iraq
Statement of the WSWS Editorial Board
With a substantial majority of the population supporting a withdrawal of US troops from Iraq, the Bush administration and its Democratic allies have joined forces in an attempt to intimidate the American people into accepting a protracted and bloody colonial war. The bipartisan campaign in support of the war was summed up by back-to-back statements from Senator Joseph Lieberman (Democrat of Connecticut) and President Bush, both of them proclaiming a “strategy for victory” in Iraq…

Iran and the US exit strategy in Iraq
Kaveh L Afrasiabi
Iran may be a member of the “axis of evil” according to the Bush administration, but increasingly it has become clear that it also holds a key to the riddle of a working strategy for US troop withdrawal from Iraq. At least, that is the impression one gets by the recent statement by the US envoy to Iraq, reflected in Newsweek, regarding President George W Bush’s authorization of a dialogue with Iran. Consequently, the question of future detente between Iran and the US has now gained new currency, as well as urgency…

Land of Lincoln
Whiskey bar
Last summer I took a long, speculative look at a company called the Lincoln Group, which appeared to have parlayed its Republican Party connections into a whopping big contract with the Pentagon’s special ops propaganda machine — the JPOSE (Joint Psychological Operations Support Element) to use the proper Orwellian acronym. Now the Los Angeles Times has obtained a little more information on what the Lincoln Group has been giving the taxpayers for their money — which appears to be a bunch of bribes paid to Iraqi newspapers to regurgitate official Cheney Administration talking points…

Where People Cannot Afford Their Country
Dahr Jamail and Harb Al-Mukhtar
Despite the allocation of billions of dollars of U.S. government money for “reconstruction”, Iraqis are struggling to exist amidst soaring prices, unemployment, a devastated infrastructure, and cuts in services. Iraqis received a monthly food ration during the Oil for Food programme which was set up to provide relief during the sanctions against Iraq up to the invasion in 2003. The head of each family was allotted monthly food coupons for commodities like sugar, rice, tea, detergents, cooking oil, beans and baby milk. But the U.S.-backed governments, starting with the Iraqi Governing Council, have failed to consistently deliver the monthly food basket on time, amidst an unemployment rate estimated at close to 70 percent…

Towards a Greater Air War on Iraq?
Hard Rain
RON JACOBS
Recently, news reports in US and European newspapers have suggested that Washington and London are considering a major reduction in their forces in Iraq. These reports usually fail to mention that those same forces were increased only last summer and that the rumored reduction is really not as large as advertised when looking at the actual numbers in country. Also, with few exceptions, most of these reports don’t bother to state that if the troops are pulled back from the front and brought home, the Pentagon plans to replace their combat capability with air power. For those who were around during the US war in Vietnam, this plan is an eery echo of the last few years of that war…

On Power – Open letter to the US Congress
Stan Goff
…It is because we understand power that we are not going to forgive and forget that when the war fever was up, fed by the lies of Republicans, the war was facilitated by the eager xenophobic complicity of most Democrats, and by the slavish obedience of the corporate press. Most of you not only co-signed what you knew to be an illegal invasion ˆ you have continued to sign the checks to perpetuate the war. You wanted to be lied to about the war, because the polls supported the war, and you were sniffing the political air. It is because we understand power that we know that most of you did this out of craven opportunism and a concern for your political ambitions ˆ knowing full well that no one you loved was likely to be sent home without a limb, without an eye, without a life…

Murtha Says Army Is ‘Broken, Worn Out’
Congressman Predicts Troops Will Leave Iraq Within a Year
The Associated Press
Most U.S. troops will leave Iraq within a year because the Army is “broken, worn out” and “living hand to mouth,” Rep. John Murtha told a civic group. Tw weeks ago, Murtha created a storm of comment when he called for U.S. troops to leave Iraq now. The Democratic congressman spoke to a group of community and business leaders in Latrobe on Wednesday, the same day President Bush said troops would be withdrawn when they’ve achieved victory, not under an artificial deadline set by politicians…

Democracy Now!
…Bush has repeatedly linked a U.S. withdrawal to improvements in the capability of Iraqi forces. But the mainstream media has recently detailed the existence of death squads within the largely Shiite police and special commandos. Operating through or with the Iraqi security forces, these militias have abducted, tortured and executed hundreds, perhaps thousands, of Sunnis. The New York Times reported Tuesday “Some Sunni males have been found dead in ditches and fields, with bullet holes in their temples, acid burns on their skin, and holes in their bodies apparently made by electric drills. Many have simply vanished”…

Embedded TIME Reporter: Bush Lied In Speech Yesterday About Iraqi Security Forces
Think Progress
Yesterday, President Bush claimed that Iraqi security forces “primarily led” the assault on the city of Tal Afar. Bush highlighted it as an “especially clear” sign of the progress Iraq security forces were making in Iraq. The progress of the Iraqi forces is especially clear when the recent anti-terrorist operations in Tal Afar are compared with last year’s assault in Fallujah. In Fallujah, the assault was led by nine coalition battalions made up primarily of United States Marines and Army — with six Iraqi battalions supporting them∑This year in Tal Afar, it was a very different story. The assault was primarily led by Iraqi security forces — 11 Iraqi battalions, backed by five coalition battalions providing support. TIME Magazine reporter Michael Ware, who is embedded with the U.S. troops in Iraq who participated in the Tal Afar battle, appeared on Anderson Cooper yesterday. He said Bush’s description was completely untrue…

Cheerleading at Annapolis
Mike Whitney
It’s pathetic to see the world’s most powerful man, shunted into prearranged venues so he can pitch his snake-oil to college aged boys. That said, Bush’s appearance today at the Naval Academy has got to be a new low for the White House public relations team. Apparently the only people buying the huckster-in-chief’s bedraggled vision of a democratic Iraq are rosy-cheeked young men who dream of battlefields instead of girlfriends. Is this the last place Bush can count on a round of applause without body-scanning everyone who enters the door? (…) Bush “war-whoop” has lost its resonance; its allure. The bubble-president has become a shadow of his former self; a tattered coat on a stick. Perhaps, he doesn’t know that the battle is lost. All around him a palpable sense of desperation is setting in…

Bush in Iraq, Slouching Toward Genocide
Robert Parry, www.opednews.com
Despite pretty words about democracy and freedom, George W. Bush’s “victory” plan in Iraq is starting to look increasingly like an invitation to genocide, the systematic destruction of the Sunni minority for resisting its U.S.-induced transformation from the nation’s ruling elite into second-class citizenship. The Sunnis, an Islamic sect that makes up about 35 percent of Iraq’s 26 million people, are being confronted with a stark choice, either accept subordination to the less-educated Shiite majority or face the devastation of Sunni neighborhoods, the imprisonment of many Sunni males and the deaths of large numbers of the Sunni population…

For years Saddam has been pilloried in the press as a homicidal maniac, a “modern day Hitler”, and the “Butcher of Baghdad”. The torture of Iraqi detainees by US military forces is undeniable. We now know the Bush administration condoned torture even before Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom was launched upon Afghanistan and Iraq, in this post-9/11 hysteria of terrorist infiltration on American soil. Congressman Marty Meehan (D-MA), a ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee, was horrified after he viewed Abu Ghraib prison photos released by the Department of Defense. Meehan remarked emerging from the darkened committee room, “I was obviously shocked and horrified to discover that the new photos were even more gruesome than those we have seen in the media. What went on there is indefensible and inexcusable.”..

The recent revelations about the virulent spread of death squads ravaging Iraq have only confirmed for many people the lethal incompetence of the Bush Regime, whose brutal bungling appears to have unleashed the demon of sectarian strife in the conquered land. The general reaction, even among some war supporters, has been bitter derision: “Jeez, these bozos couldn’t boil an egg without causing collateral damage.” But what if the truth is even more sinister? For some unexplained reason, the discovery of fake news stories planted by the United States government is now considered scandalous, or at least momentarily shocking in the current news cycle. Did Bush authorise torture?
No Right Turn
In December last year, the ACLU released what seemd to be a smoking gun for the US policy of torture: an email suggesting that President Bush himself directly authorised the use of torture. The White House issued the usual non-denial denial, but now the issue has resurfaced. In an article on the history of waterboarding (and particularly its past use and unequivocal treatment as torture by US legal and military authorities), ABC news notes that current and former CIA officers tell ABC News there is a presidential finding, signed in 2002, by President Bush, Condoleezza Rice, and then Attorney General John Ashcroft approving the techniques, including water boarding…
