Huge change in Iraq
ksuwildkat, Daily Kos
US-led forces have bombed eight bridges on the Euphrates River in western Iraq to stop insurgents using them, US military spokesperson Major General Rick Lynch said Thursday (…) Why is this a big deal? Because we are actually destroying infrastructure in a country we occupy. We are saying that the military value of the bridges to the insurgancy is greater than the value to us in either a military or economic/social way (…) For the first time I believe we have lost. For the first time as a military professional I think we have no way of winning this. We are willing to destroy the basic structures of the country to deny the enemy their use. This means we have no other way to deny them the use of these assets. We can’t stop them, the Iraqi Army can’t stop them, the Iraqi police can’t stop them and we can’t collect enough intelligence to make the enemy pay for using what should be choke points…

Democratic Party USA: Still Around?
RevolutionaryFlowerpotSociety
…And there are good reasons for this eventuality: despite the fact that the Bush administration is imploding with corruption, illegal wars, outright cronyism, arrogance, did I mention corruption ˜ despite all this, the Democratic Party congressional leaders line up to kiss Bush’s ass! Well, not all of them of course. Some line up to kiss Cheney’s ass, for Christ’s sake. Some Democrats are so desperate they line up to kiss up to any judicial (or any other) nominees Bush sends to the Congress…

Setting Iran up for a preemptive strike, possibly with nukes
Linda S. Heard, Online Journal Contributing Writer
It’s a scam. Who would ever have thought after the Iraq tragedy that the US and its client states would have had the chutzpah to repeat their dismal performance? When the rumblings from the White House and the Israeli Knesset first began over Iran’s alleged nuclear weapons ambitions, I thought their accusations would be laughed out of court. I was wrong. I was wrong because I hadn’t realised the depths to which some powerful nations would sink, even to the point of binning international law along with empirical justice, in furthering their own interests…

U.S. Soldier Is Among 21 Killed in Iraq
THOMAS WAGNER, Associated Press Writer
Insurgents using suicide and roadside bombs killed at least 21 people, including a U.S. soldier, on Thursday in the latest of a series of attacks aimed at wrecking Iraq’s constitutional referendum next week. The attacks came as Iraqis began picking up copies of the draft constitution that they will vote on Oct. 15 after the country’s Shiite-led parliament ended a bitter dispute with Sunni Arabs about how the referendum will be conducted…

Nearly 1,000 families have fled their homes in Haditha in western Iraq following the launch of a US-led military operation to hunt down in insurgents in the town in the Euphrates river valley, according to residents in the area. The Iraq Red Crescent Society said it had sent an evaluation mission to the town 225 km west of Baghdad to get a more precise idea of the situation and was preparing to send a convoy of relief items to the area…

Bush repeats threat to veto torture curb
Brian Knowlton International Herald Tribune
The White House repeated an earlier veto threat Thursday after the Senate voted by an overwhelming bipartisan margin for a measure to prevent mistreatment of prisoners held by the U.S. military. The 90-to-9 vote to ban “cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment” of anyone in U.S. government custody was one of the sharpest political rebukes in Washington of a system under which abuses occurred in Iraq and Afghanistan and at the Guantánamo naval base in Cuba…

The threat to American democracy
Al Gore
…I thought maybe it was an aberration when three-quarters of Americans said they believed that Saddam Hussein was responsible for attacking us on September 11, 2001. But more than four years later, between a third and a half still believe Saddam was personally responsible for planning and supporting the attack (…) Are we still routinely torturing helpless prisoners, and if so, does it feel right that we as American citizens are not outraged by the practice? And does it feel right to have no ongoing discussion of whether or not this abhorrent, medieval behavior is being carried out in the name of the American people?…

You know we’re in serious trouble when George W. Bush is on TV more often than re-runs of “Seinfeld.” The last few weeks, the boy’s shown up everywhere there was a stray camera (except “The Surreal Life” because that was too close to home), making statements, barfing bromides, even holding a press conference! Blundering Into Syria?
The Triumph of Ideology Over Reality
PAUL CRAIG ROBERTS, CounterPunch
…The diplomatic editor of the London Telegraph reports (Oct. 5) that the US is aiming at Syrian “regime change.” The British newspaper quotes Israeli defense minister Shaul Mofaz as saying that a report blaming Syria for the assassination of a former Lebanese government official will be the catalyst that starts the ball rolling. Mofaz says the report will be the pretext for Bush to impose sanctions on Syria, “beginning with economic sanctions and moving on to others.” The Israeli newspaper, Haaretz, reports (Oct. 3) that the Bush administration has asked Israel’s government to recommend a successor for Syrian president Bashar al Assad. No doubt, the Bush administration will describe Israel’s selection of Syria’s new president as the workings of democracy…

Martial Law and the advent of the Supreme Executive
Mike Whitney
…This is the context in which we should evaluate the push to use the military in domestic affairs. Every change that has taken place within the government has been designed for one purpose alone; to increase the power of the president. If the congress chooses to overturn the Posse Comitatus Act, they will have removed the last bit of rickety scaffolding that protects the country from becoming a de facto military dictatorship. The power to deploy troops within the nation is the power to use the military against American citizens. It transforms the “people’s army” into a direct threat to the democracy it is supposed to serve. This is the essential vision of the globalists who currently control all the levers of state-power in Washington. They’ve now articulated their intention to use any conceivable national tragedy to achieve their objective of colonizing America through force of arms and establishing the supreme authority of the president…

The real insurgency, and the fake one
Xymphora
The latest story (or here) is that the Iraqi insurgents are using American vehicles stolen in the United States in committing their attacks. This has to remind you of the discovery that the insurgents were using Italian-made hand guns manufactured without serial numbers, an order almost certainly placed by some intelligence agency (it should also remind you of the inconsistencies in the assassination of Nick Berg). The ‘experts’ claim that the American vehicles are used because they more easily fit in, but that is obvious nonsense, as they stand out like a sore thumb…

The Axis Enemy Series: Which Rogue Nation?
Andrea Howard, Axis of Logic
What do you call a Nation that is defiant of, and routinely violates International Law; one who invokes International Law, only when it serves its own interests, acting unilaterally when it does not? How is a Nation defined when it demands accountability for other Nations while denying the rest of the world the ability to ensure, and enforce, accountability upon itself; when its military might is used to enforce its ideology and agenda, basing its entire existence on the Rule of Coercion and Force? What do you call a Nation that maintains and continues to pursue newer and better Weapons of Mass Destruction; when it exports those weapons around the world? (…)The US labels Nations that exhibit these actions as “Rogue States.” Ironic; the US defined the “Rogue Nation” concept and is now defined by it.

Abbas said that Bush declared: “God told me to strike at al Qaeda and I struck them, and then He instructed me to strike at Saddam, which I did, and now I am determined to solve the problem in the Middle East. George Bush’s “Major Speech” Resets the Terror Trap!
A TvNewsLIES Analysis
On the morning of October 6th, George W. Bush made a not-for-prime time “major” speech before a select group of supporters. For those unfamiliar with the National Endowment for Democracy, rest assured that it is a highly controversial, tax-supported group that tries to influence elections in foreign countries. What a perfect audience for the President! The speech was redundant and unremarkable, despite being hyped as significant’ and highly important. There was little new rhetoric and not an iota of comfort for a nation consumed with concern about the morass and turmoil in Iraq. There was, however a concerted effort to capitalize on a strategy that worked so well in the President’s rush to war in 2003: make them afraid…

Saddam’s protocol chief a fraud?

Haitham Rashid Wihaib came to Georgetown last year with horror stories about Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, whom he said he served as chief-of-protocol; stories he also told the British and American press. There was only one problem: Wihaib may never have served Saddam , and most likely never even met him. When Wihaib spoke at Georgetown in February 2005 at the invitation of the Lecture Fund, he was covered extensively in both the Voice and the Hoya. In the student newspapers, in his lecture and in international media, he was presented as an authoritative source on conditions in Iraq before and during the war. Iraq’s constitutional referendum makes a mockery of democracy
Peter Symonds, WSWS
Iraq’s referendum on the draft constitution to be held on October 15 has turned into a farce. Last Sunday, the US-backed ruling coalition of Kurdish and Shiite fundamentalist parties amended the country’s electoral laws to virtually guarantee a positive result. Under the transitional law drawn up by US officials in 2003, originally to guarantee the support of Kurdish parties, the referendum would be lost if a two-thirds majority in three provinces voted no. Sunni organisations and parties have been encouraging their supporters to register and to vote against the draft constitution, making it quite possible that the document will be rejected…

America or the Empire
Bush’s Final Choice
RAMZY BAROUD
Deep down, U.S. President George W. Bush should grasp the seriousness of his debacle. If true, then he must also appreciate the time element in averting the worse-case scenario, which he, along with an increasingly alienated number of ideologues are imposing on their country. Iraq is a multifaceted disaster, and its calamitous effects are hurting America on many levels. The number of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq is creeping up to the 2,000 mark. Iraq war costs could hit $570 billion US by 2010, troop levels not sustainable

The U.S. administration is spending about $7 billion a month to wage the war on terror and costs could total $570 billion by the end of 2010, assuming troops are gradually brought home, a congressional report estimates. The paper by the Congressional Research Service underscores how the price tag has been gradually rising for the war in Iraq. A year ago, the Pentagon was calculating its average monthly costs in that conflict at below $5 billion – an amount the research service said has now grown close to $6 billion…

British provocation in Basra
AMANECER DEL NUEVO SIGLO
On 20th September, British tanks backed by helicopters attacked a prison in Basra, the main city in southern Iraq, in order to liberate two undercover British military agents who had been detained the previous day by Iraqi troops. After using armoured fighting vehicles to burst into the jail, the British troops searched the building from “top to bottom” before forcing Iraqi guards to disclose the whereabouts of the men at gunpoint. Finally, they were found in a nearby house from which they were released. The attackers, from the same squad as the two captured soldiers, used plastic explosives to blow out the doors and windows of the house before launching stun grenades at the militiamen who were guarding the two commandos. Five civilians were shot dead during the British assault. The incident has highlighted the deep mistrust between British troops and the new Iraqi regime that they paradoxically helped instate…

…As we approach 2,000 dead in Iraq — the real number is probably twice that phony administration figure — the commander’s mental instability mixed with native stupidity continues to kill Americans. Throughout history many have died for their leader’s vile yet sad deficiencies, now Americans. More than nature’s hurricanes, what devastated the south were Bush Administration’s policies: huge tax cuts for the wealthy, philosophical disdain for government and indifference toward the poor. I am sure those who abused their power to get such projects will see no shame in their egregious actions. I wonder if these same Republicans and Democrats are thinking about the soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines, who still today are fighting without the equipment needed to be fully combat effective.
