The Washington Post’s Online Version Acknowledges Poll on Impeachment
Dan Froomkin, Washingtonpost.com – AfterDowningStreet.org
More than four in 10 Americans, according to a recent Zogby poll, say that if President Bush did not tell the truth about his reasons for going to war with Iraq, Congress should consider holding him accountable through impeachment. But you wouldn’t know it from following the news. Only three mainstream outlets that I can find made even cursory mention of the poll last week when it came out…

The origin of the Right-Wing Revolution
Emmanuel Goldstein, Online Journal Guest Writer
…But why invade Iraq? Because this was the plan from the beginning, with or without 9/11. Perpetual war in the Middle East to preserve Republican power at home. Iraq is only the first step, soon Syria and Iran will fall. Future attacks on American interests will be blamed on these nations and the war will continue. The Republicans need a war to survive and the Democrats will continue to become nothing but a meaningless opposition party that will give our nation a surface appearance of democracy…
Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Saturday, 25 June 2005
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board, the Free Arab Voice. ( www.freearabvoice.org )
…In a dispatch posted at 5:29am GMT, Quds Press reported that the city of al-Fallujah was in a state of high tension as US occupation troops were beginning to impose “extensive security measures” on the city following the Resistance attack on Thursday that left six US troops dead and 13 others – nine of them women – wounded. The agency reported that the Americans were preparing to mount a large-scale campaign of raids and searches in the city…

Nine Eleven Down the Memory Hole
Kurt Nimmo, Another Day in the Empire
It is interesting, if not wholly typical, that a Google news search of the words “Morgan Reynolds” and “inside job” returns exactly ten matches. Reynolds, a former Bushite (chief economist in the Labor Department during Bush’s first term), told United Press International on June 8 “that the official story about the collapse of the WTC is ‘bogus’ and that it is more likely that a controlled demolition destroyed the Twin Towers and adjacent Building No. 7"…

Plame retaliation
Xymphora
There is a good article by Peter Bergen on fruitcake Laurie Mylroie, the half of the Gruesome Twosome who is not currently in jail (Judy now has a use for her toothbrush shiv). One paragraph caught my eye: “Mylroie has also recently taken on the role of defender of Ahmed Chalabi, the head of the Iraqi National Congress, who is accused of providing fraudulent information about Iraq’s WMD programme and passing intelligence to Iran. In May, in the conservative newspaper the New York Sun, Mylroie described Chalabi as the victim of a ‘longstanding grudge’ by the CIA”…

Judith Miller: The Anti-Hero
Jack Random
… As a reporter for the New York Times, Judith Miller was used by the White House to prosecute an illegal war of aggression that may ultimately cost hundreds of thousands of lives. Instead of learning her lessons and coming clean, she maintained her ties and secured her position as the print media point for White House propaganda. She was leading the charge to war with Iraq, Syria and North Korea before the curious case of Valerie Plame imploded and brought her operation to a close. Like Dan Rather before her, Judy Miller has left us in a quandary. We believe in freedom of the press but we also believe that Judy Miller has prostituted her profession to the White House propaganda machine…

Iraq War Deserters Speak Out From Canada
First Person Commentaries, Paolo Pontoniere
…First steps you take in Baghdad, you realize that there’s death and destruction all over the place. No weapons of mass destruction in sight. We’re fighting people that we’re supposed to help, but in fact they hate you and every time you walk down the street they shoot at you because you occupy their country. You’re asked to get in their houses, in their businesses, block the roads, but you’re an occupying power, you’re messingup their daily life. You’re not a liberator. You raid their houses and kill their family…

IRAQ: Focus on illegal organ trade
IRIN
…Fadhel’s new kidney came from a man who initially asked $4,000 but was bartered down to $3,000 after long hours of negotiation. The kidney, tests, two operations – one on the donor and the other on the recipient – along with two weeks in hospital, gave Fadhel a bill of $10,000. The Baghdad kidney market trade in Iraq has even attracted interest from abroad. ‘Medical tourists’ from neighbouring countries are keen to buy the cut-price organs…

103 Iraqi Parliamentarians Demand Withdrawal of US Troops
Juan Cole, Informed Comment
…103 members of the National Assembly (the Parliament) have demanded the adoption of a resolution cancelling the request made by the Government to the UN Security Council to extend the presence of multinational forces, and urging the Government to put “a clear plan for army building and a timetable for the withdrawal of occupation troops” from Iraq…

Opinion polls show growing discontent with war on Iraq
Why Bush is losing the occupation
Socialist Worker
GEORGE W. BUSH’s June 28 speech to “reassure the American people” about his war for oil and empire in Iraq didn’t even convince Republicans. Growing criticism from his own ranks slowed somewhat, but lawmakers like Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) still grumbled that the administration was too slow in training a new Iraqi security force to take over policing the occupation. Of course, McCain’s objection is a symptom of the deeper problem for the U.S.—that the occupation is hated by the vast majority of Iraqis, and active opposition is growing continually…

Shock and Awe: Aerial Bombardment, American Style
William Van Wagenen, Electronic Iraq
Before the 2003 American invasion the Bush administration declared that the strategy of “Shock and Awe” bombing would be used to assault Iraq. Driving through Baghdad during my stay here in the last month has allowed me to see some of the destruction caused by the aerial bombardment, which preceded the US invasion. One thing that struck me as odd was a bombed out government run shopping mall, which resembled the huge Wal-Mart stores back home in the States. I asked our driver about it, who said the Americans bombed it during the 2003 invasion. He said one could find anything there, including food, clothing, and so forth…

So, Mr Bremer, where did all the money go?
Ed Harriman, The Guardian
At the end of the Iraq war, vast sums of money were made available to the US-led provisional authorities, headed by Paul Bremer, to spend on rebuilding the country. By the time Bremer left the post eight months later, $8.8bn of that money had disappeared. Ed Harriman on the extraordinary scandal of Iraq’s missing billions…

Iraq insurgency forces Pentagon rethink on ability to fight two wars at once
Julian Borger, The Guardian
The Iraq counter-insurgency is forcing the Pentagon to question its military doctrine that requires forces to be able to fight two major wars at the same time, it was claimed yesterday. A four-yearly review of US military power is not due until early next year, but it is already clear that the strategy is under great strain from the Iraq war…
