Everything You Need to Know about Iraq’s “Elections”.
Layla Anwar
February 10, 2010 – OK first and foremost, most important piece of news, confirmed news, which you will obviously not be reading about in your media. — for the month of January 2010 ALONE, there has been over 1625 sectarian arrests. I can give you the breakdown and names by province. But I really have no time to translate the whole article. And I only have two hands and am getting zero help from anyone. Sectarians arrests plus death threats against secular candidates plus the gunning down of one female candidate in Mosul —- not a good start, you must agree… And even though the ban on over 500 candidates has been revoked, the Shiite parties are staging demonstrations asking for the ban to be reintroduced. From all the information I have managed to gather and this is going to be a tough job until the 7th of March, set date for the so-called elections, provided that they will actually take place…so from my understanding of events and this has been corroborated by several Iraqi observers and analysts —- the De-Baathification committee —-set up under the fraudulent, gun,.bible toting Bremer — now called Justice and Accountability led by Ahmed Chalabi and his mate Al-Lami is playing a major role in the “ preparatory” process for the upcoming elections…

Welcoming raped women…a one way ticket to God’s Paradise
Hussein Anwar
February 10, 2010 – …I still cannot forget what Nadia said… “I couldn’t go back home because my brother set a funeral for me and I knew the knife of honor was waiting for me.” WHAT HONOR?! She is innocent, and all these women are innocent, it was not their fault. What honor are you talking about? SHE WAS FORCED INTO THIS!!!…It is because of people like Nadia’s brother who would not welcome his sister, daughter, mother, wife etc back home, it is because of these people and their mentality that Nadia decided to wire herself and bomb herself in the middle of an American patrol, it is because of such men…these women wanted to die by any means possible, bombing themselves, or assistant suicide or mercy killing etc…You should accept them again… Let me tell you why you should accept them. If you think for a second that YOU are doing them a favor by accepting them again, then you are FUCKING BIG TIME MISTAKEN! THEY…THEY! are doing you a favor by accepting you as a husband…

US’ Expanded Weapons Stockpiling in Israel
Nora Barrows-Friedman
February 10, 2010 – Sameh Habeeb, a young, independent, Palestinian journalist, lived in a modest house in the middle of Gaza City in December 2008. From his bedroom window, Habeeb reported to international news outlets exactly what he saw night after night during Israel’s lethal 22-day assault. On one occasion, Habeeb told Truthout, “the Apache helicopter gunship hovered less than 200 meters away from us. The children, my brothers and sisters, were hiding in the corners of the house, taking shelter. It was horrendous. The sky was dark; there was nothing but the sound and the red lights of the Apache, the screams of the children, and the sound of the bombings close by. The house shook like an earthquake every time there was a bombing. I thought I was going to be the next victim. We smelled the gun powder everywhere.” Approximately 1,400 Palestinians were killed – including more than 300 children – and over 5,000 people were wounded in the 2008-2009 Israeli attacks, dubbed Operation Cast Lead, using advanced American-made weaponry..

FBI officials accused of directing Pakistan ‘torture’
By Syed Shoaib Hasan, BBC News
February 10, 2010 – Five US citizens held in Pakistan on suspicion of plotting attacks have alleged that US officials directed their torture to extract confessions. The US embassy in Islamabad has dismissed the claims as “baseless”. The men, who are being held in the city of Sargodha, earlier stated in court that they had been tortured by the Pakistani authorities. They deny claims they were plotting attacks in Pakistan and Afghanistan and had sought links with extremists…

The false sacredness of the 1967 border
Hasan Abu Nimah
February 10, 2010 – When the United States abandoned its demand that Israel freeze settlement construction as a prelude to restarting stalled Palestinian-Israeli negotiations, the Obama administration urged both sides to move straight into discussions about a future Palestinian state “based on the 1967 borders.” Setting the border first, it was hoped, would automatically “resolve” the issue of the settlements, and this is now the focus of the “indirect talks” that US envoy for the Middle East peace process George Mitchell is trying to broker. Of course the settlements, built on occupied West Bank land in flagrant violation of international law, would not be removed. Rather, the border would simply be redrawn to annex the vast majority of settlers and their homes to Israel, and as if by magic, the whole issue of the settlements would disappear just like that…

AFGHANISTAN: Concerns over emergency health care in Helmand offensive
IRIN News
Ferbruary 10, 2010 – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has voiced concern about access to health care for conflict-affected people in Helmand Province, southern Afghanistan, where a much-publicized offensive by thousands of Afghan and foreign forces is under way. ICRC said the intensification of conflict could adversely affect the already limited health services in Helmand. “Our main concern is that civilians or injured fighters needing urgent health care are prevented from accessing it due to checkpoints, road blocks, and the general fear to travel in conflict-affected areas,” Bijan Frederic Farnoudi, ICRC’s communications officer in Kabul, told IRIN on 10 February…

The Mind-Boggling Stupidity of Michael Rubin
Robert Dreyfuss
February 10, 2010 – …AEI, and Rubin, had consensual intercourse with Chalabi for years, and now Chalabi has emerged in full blossom as a pro-Iranian villain purging Tehran’s opponents in Iraq. Yet Chalabi’s ties to Tehran don’t faze Rubin. In a February 1 article in his favorite outlet, National Review Online, Rubin wrote a piece so mind-bogglingly stupid that it surpasses even his past efforts at winning a place in the Guinness Moron Book of Records. While the whole world, including countless good-hearted Iraqis, expressed outrage over the McCarthyite purge of more than 500 Iraqi candidates by Rubin’s comrade, Chalabi, because of trumped-up charges about ties to the deposed Arab Baath Socialist Party, Rubin cavalierly dismissed the purge…The reemergence of Ahmed Chalabi, the Iranian-backed wheeler-dealer and charlatan who, once again, is angling to be prime minister of Iraq – yes, really! – allows us to remind ourselves about Rubin’s idiocy. Last month, Chalabi, who spends a great deal of time sojourning in Tehran, and who worked tirelessly on Iran’s behalf since last spring to assemble the Shiite-religious bloc, misnamed the Iraqi National Alliance (INA), for the March 7 elections, fired a de-Baathification bazooka at hundreds of Iraqi political candidates who distinguished themselves by speaking out against Iran’s burgeoning influence in Iraq…

Holocaust: Israel’s Ultimate Red Herring
By Khalid Amayreh
February 10, 2010 – Whenever Israel’s image suffers a setback, mainly because of its manifestly criminal treatment of the Palestinians, Israel invokes the holocaust. Israel does not openly link the Nazi-like brutality meted out to the Palestinians to the holocaust. However, the implied message in highlighting holocaust commemorations is inescapable. The message is that what Germany did to European Jewry in the course of World War II justifies whatever Israel has done and is doing to the Palestinians. In other words, the perpetration of one holocaust by Germany against Jews should allow Zionist Jews — Israel— to carry out another holocaust against the Palestinians…

British hospitals under pressure by Afghan injuries
AFP
February 10, 2010 – Hospitals treating British troops wounded by Afghan insurgents are under growing pressure, a watchdog warned today, ahead of a major offensive expected to trigger a fresh surge in casualties. Medical centres in both Afghanistan and Britain are struggling to cope with mounting numbers of injuries amid increasingly fierce opposition from Taliban-led enemies, Britain’s public spending watchdog said. Two major treatment centres in Britain – the main hospital for dealing with seriously injured troops, and the main rehabilitation centre — are “under increasing pressure”, said the National Audit Office…

Gaza’s defiant tunnellers head deeper underground
Robert Fisk
February 10, 2010 – They are the real resistance. They are the lung through which Gaza breathes. True, missiles must pass along their subterranean tracks, Qassam rockets, too, Kalashnikov ammunition, explosives. But by far the greatest burden of the tunnellers of Gaza is the very life-blood of this besieged little pseudo-Islamic statelet: fresh meat, oranges, chocolate, shirts, trousers, toys, cigarettes, wedding dresses, paper, entire motor-cars in four bits, car batteries, even plastic bottle tops. The tunnellers of Gaza are bombed by the Israelis, they die in their own collapsing tunnels – and now they face a new Egyptian wall, even the fear of drowning. Terrorists they may be to the Israelis – the promiscuous use of this word makes it fairly meaningless these days – but heroes they are to the Palestinians of Gaza. Rich ones, too, perhaps…

Finally, some Humanity out of the Silence.
Layla Anwar
February 10, 2010 – I am touched, deeply touched by reading Hussein’s Anwar last blog post about raped Iraqi women. I felt for many years, I was alone, talking about, denouncing, writing, crying out in the wild about the fate of rape victims in societies that are not only occupied but that also show no mercy to its women, when it comes to questions of Male Ego, ( false) Pride and so-called Honor. I had mentioned that hundreds of rape cases since 2003, go unreported, out of fear of reprisal by family members, clan, tribe…a heavy secret carried inside. Rape committed by the Occupying forces US/UK and others. And not only in detention camps, but even during house raids..

UK releases ‘US torture evidence’
Aljazeera.net
February 10, 2010 – A British court has ordered the government to disclose classified information about the treatment of a former Guantanamo Bay detainee who said he was tortured in US custody. The information, contained in seven paragraphs redacted from a high court judgement, described the treatment of Binyam Mohamed by US authorities as “at the very least cruel, inhuman and degrading”…

Palestinian Families Appeal to UN Over Israeli Construction of “Museum of Tolerance” on Jerusalem’s Historic Mamilla Cemetery
Democracy Now!
February 10, 2010 – Palestinian families have filed a petition with the United Nations over the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s plans to build a “Museum of Tolerance” over the historic Muslim cemetery Jerusalem. Opponents of the project have long questioned how a monument to tolerance can be built on the remains of the graves of generations of Palestinian Muslims. We speak to Columbia University professor and author Rashid Khalidi, a petitioner whose ancestors were buried at the Mamilla cemetery; and Michael Ratner of the Center for Constitutional Rights, which is representing the families in their petition. A controversy over the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s project to build a Museum of Tolerance on a historic Muslim cemetery in Jerusalem has gone all the way to the United Nations…

Silencing Palestinian voices in Jerusalem
By Omar Radwan
February 10, 2010 – Last week, the Israeli Ministry of Interior issued Palestinian geographer Khalil al-Tafakji with a six-month travel ban. Tafakji’s activities are largely confined to surveying and cartography, he is not a politician. However, his work has created major obstacles for Israel’s plans to Judaize the city of Jerusalem and decrease its Palestinian population. Tafakji is employed by the Mapping and Geographic Information Systems Department (GIS) of the Arab Studies Society. The aim of this department, as described by Tafakji, is “to research and document the effects of Israeli policies and practices in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT) relating to land and property, and to be able to produce maps showing these effects”…

Haiti gives conflicting counts for quake deaths
By MICHELLE FAUL, AP
Wednesday, February 10, 2010 — Haiti issued wildly conflicting death tolls for the Jan. 12 earthquake on Wednesday, adding to confusion about how many people actually died – and to suspicion that nobody really knows. A day after Communications Minister Marie-Laurence Jocelyn Lassegue raised the official death toll to 230,000, her office put out a statement quoting President Rene Preval as saying 270,000 bodies had been hastily buried by the government following the earthquake. A press officer withdrew the statement, saying there was an error, but re-issued it within minutes. Later Wednesday, the ministry said that due to a typo, the number should have read 170,000. Government officials were not available to comment on the confusion…

Gaza Energy Crisis Averted – For Now
By Mel Frykberg
February 10, 2010 – Pressure exerted on the Palestinian Authority (PA) by international and regional officials has given Gazans a last minute reprieve, albeit temporary, from plunging into darkness and plummeting temperatures. “The emergency has been temporarily halted after the PA released urgent funds to finance two fuel tankers entering Gaza on Sunday,” says Osama Dabou from Gaza’s Power Plant (GPP) authority. “We are expecting several other fuel tankers to enter Gaza shortly. But this is only an interim stop-gap and will only last a short while after which the situation will again reach a critical point,” Dabou told IPS…

Defending Moazzam Begg and Amnesty International
Andy Worthington
February 10, 2010 – Just when it seemed that Republicans in America had a monopoly on Islamophobic hysteria, the Sunday Times prompted a torrent of similar hysteria in the UK by running an article in which an employee of Amnesty International — Gita Sahgal, head of the gender unit at the International Secretariat — criticized the organization that employed her for its association with former Guantánamo prisoner Moazzam Begg. Before getting into the substance — or lack of it — in Sahgal’s complaints, it should be noted first of all that her immediate suspension by Amnesty was the least that should have been expected. What other organization would put up with an employee badmouthing them to a national newspaper on a Sunday, and then allow them to return to work as usual on Monday morning?…
