Children Prisoners of the U.S. War of Terror
By Kenneth J. Theisen
February 1, 2010 – Many people in this country are aware of the atrocious conditions and treatment of adult prisoners in the U.S. war of terror. These prisoners have been held at Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo, Bagram, and other hellholes run by the U.S. But few are aware that thousands of children have also been taken by the U.S. and its allies in this war of terror. A few of these children have been held at Guantanamo and have received some publicity, but most have been held in prisons in Iraq and Afghanistan and have received very little notice from U.S. media. What has and is happening to these children victims of the U.S. war?…

IRAQ’s COMING CIVIL WAR?
Steve Clemons
February 1, 2010 – As Iraq tilts towards March 7th elections, there are disconcerting trends unfolding inside the Maliki-run government that portend serious problems and potentially civil war in the not distant future. Iraq expert and military affairs specialist Tom Ricks recently commented on Wolf Blitzer’s Situation Room on CNN that he believed that there was a 50-50 chance Iraq would erupt in civil war, and a 10-15% chance that the growing tensions in and around Iraq could become a regional war involving several of the other major states around Iraq. Part of the growing trouble inside Iraq stems from the growing sense that politically empowered Shiites in the Iraq Government led by Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki are still carrying on campaigns against Sunni political interests…

Why We Petition For Palestinian Civil Rights in Lebanon
Franklin Lamb
February 1, 2010 – …We Petition because Lebanon’s Palestinian refugees are today, as has been the case for 62 years, systematically deprived of basic rights guaranteed by the United Nations Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and because the Palestinian refugees are the only refugee population in the world excluded from the international protection accorded by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Statute and the Refugee Convention. At the end of 2008, at least 7.1 million Palestinians, representing 67 percent of the entire Palestinian population (10.6 million) worldwide were displaced persons. Among them are 6.6 million refugees and 427,000 IDPs. This makes Palestinian refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) the largest and longest-standing case of displaced persons in the world today…

Afghan ‘geological reserves worth a trillion dollars’
AFP
February 1, 2010 — Afghanistan, one of the world’s poorest countries, is sitting on mineral and petroleum reserves worth an estimated one trillion dollars, President Hamid Karzai said Sunday. The war-ravaged nation could become one of the richest in the world if helped to tap its geological deposits, Karzai told reporters… “The initial figures we have obtained show that our mineral deposits are worth a thousand billion dollars — not a thousand million dollars but a thousand billion,” he said. The USGS, the US government’s scientific agency, has been working on the 17-million dollar survey for a number of years, Karzai said…

The war profiteers (including those on the ‘left’)
The Common Ills
February 1, 2010 – …Today the New York Times offers an editorial on war profiteering in Iraq but we need to remember, it wasn’t just the munitions makers, not just the weapons makers, it was the faux peace set, it was the pseudo activists. It is Amy Goodman, Norman Solomon, Tom Hayden and so damn many others who made like nobody’s heart bled more on your TV and radio pretending to give a damn about the Iraq War — the ongoing Iraq War — whenever they had a book or movie on the topic to hawk or just wanted to encourage you to send money — always, always send money. That’s Panhandle Media for you. The ongoing Iraq War did not end but their interest in it did when they no longer could use it to make a buck. By their actions, you will know them. By their deeds, they will reveal themselves…

Gaza, One Year Later
By Alex Kane – Beit Hanoun
February 1, 2010 – One year after Israel’s ferocious assault, Dr. Mustafa El-Hawi, a professor at Al-Aqsa University, traveled by bus to attend a protest against the continuing Israeli siege of Gaza. As the bus passed by still-devastated areas of Beit Hanoun, in the northeast of the 25-mile-long coastal strip, the U.S.- and British-educated El-Hawi reflected on those terrifying days. “I spent 20 or 21 days living in the basement with my children and with three families of my neighbors. They were staying with us with no access to water or electricity, so we set fire in order to cook and just to feed my children,” El-Hawi says. El-Hawi, 51, lives in the densely packed Gaza City neighborhood of Tel Hawwa, which Israeli troops and tanks invaded in January 2009. “During that time, we don’t sleep, we don’t have access to proper medicine, to anything. We are expecting to die any time.”…

Arab politicians ‘facing increased persecution’ in Israel
Jonathan Cook
February 1, 2010 – Leaders of the Arab minority in Israel warned this week that they were facing an unprecedented campaign of persecution, backed by the right-wing government of Benjamin Netanyahu, designed to stop their political activities. The warning came after Said Nafaa, a Druze member of the Israeli parliament was stripped of his immunity last week, clearing the way for him to be tried for a visit to Syria three years ago. In recent weeks legal sanctions have been invoked against two other Arab political leaders, following clashes with the Israeli security forces at demonstrations against the occupation, and pressure is growing for two more MPs to be investigated…

Alef Website Report: Iran’s Ministry of Interior Evades 12 Questions
Persian2English
February 1, 2010 – Following numerous rumors and uncertainties regarding the validity of the election during the past seven months, particularly the weeks after the election, Alef website formulated 25 key questions posed by protesters and internet viewers regarding the election results. The Ministry of Interior was asked to respond to the inquiries through one of their election officials who would act as a “special online guest”on Alef’s website. The public relations and the Ministry of Interior officials, after three months of consecutive requests by Alef, acknowledged the 25 questions, but decided that it was not advisable for them to accept an invitation as an online guest. They stated that Alef is not allowed to publish or attribute any responses to the Ministry of Interior. On January 4, 2010, after numerous requests by online viewers, Alef published an invitation to all its internet viewers asking them to present their questions regarding the 2009 election. Within three weeks, with support from online viewers, legal experts, and a spokesperson from the Guardian Council, the online questions were compiled…

UN find challenges Israeli version of attack on civilian building in Gaza war
Rory McCarthy
February 1, 2010 – A new Israeli report defending the military’s conduct in the Gaza war was challenged tonight after evidence emerged apparently contradicting one of its key findings. Israel submitted a 46-page report to the UN on Friday saying its forces abided by international law throughout the three-week war last year. It was meant to avert the threat of international prosecutions and to challenge a highly critical UN inquiry by South African judge Richard Goldstone, which accused both Israel and Hamas of “grave breaches” of the fourth Geneva convention, war crimes and possible crimes against humanity…

Holes are shot in army’s denial of Gaza attack
Israel claimed it did not bomb flour mill, but 500lb explosives find proves otherwise
By Donald Macintyre
February 1, 2010 – Doubts have been cast on the Israeli rebuttal of the Goldstone Report, after it emerged last night that a bomb was defused last year at a Gaza flour mill that Israel had officially said did not come under air attack in the war. The presence of a large part of the fractured Mark 82 bomb was reported to a demining team in late January 2009, and technicians were dispatched to defuse the 500lb device on 11 February. The flour mill is the only one in Gaza, and the Goldstone Report, commissioned by the United Nations, said its destruction “was carried out for the purpose of denying sustenance to the civilian population”…

He launched his blog “Voice From Gaza” (www.peaceforgaza.blogspot.com) during Israel’s invasion of Gaza last winter. Aywan chronicled eyewitness accounts of the war and the continuing siege of the territory as well as his own attempts to leave Gaza in order to further his education in Spain. Although classes start on 8 February, he has yet to receive approval from the Egyptian government to travel to Cairo for his flight to Spain. February 1, 2010 – A Detroit-area imam who died in a shootout with the FBI in October was shot 21 times — at least once in the back — and found by police lying down with his wrists in handcuffs behind him, says a local Detroit news report. The FBI has described Abdullah, whose mosque served some 25 families, as “a separatist Muslim intent on overthrowing the United States government,” according to the New York Times, but the bureau has not alleged any terrorist activity against him, and has charged that Abdullah was involved in fencing stolen goods. Federal authorities had been monitoring Abdullah “for years,” the Times reported…

The White House budget request also included $33 billion in additional funding for fiscal 2010 to pay for increasing military and intelligence operations in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and drawing down U.S. forces in Iraq. UPDATE 2 – Iraqi Female Writer/Blogger Hiba Al-Shamaree.
Layla Anwar
February 1, 2010 – Following my last post on the arrest of Hiba Al-Shamaree (here), I would like first to warmly thank each and every single one of you who; posted, emailed, translated, re-tweeted, forwarded…my appeal for her release. In less than 48 hours, the beginning of a campaign has been launched…Why all this fuss about one blogger, you may ask, when tens of other bloggers are arrested around the world. I will tell you what the fuss is all about. – this is a FEMALE Iraqi blogger and we all know what happens in those Iraqi prisons. I think I have covered that aspect of “democratic” Iraq many a times on my blog.- she is a mere blogger.- she is a professional woman, an eye doctor and her skills are very much needed. We don’t want another Iraqi doctor to be murdered. – she has been arrested in a country that has paid in millions of dead, maimed and exiled, in the name of “Freedom and Democracy” – she has been detained in a country that has been “liberated” by the US and UK because it was ruled by a “brutal dictatorship”, “a dictatorship that arrested and tortured its innocent prisoners.” – her arrest and detention are an important confirmation that Freedom of Speech does not exist in Iraq, 7 years of “Liberation” down the line. – her arrest and detention also show the extent to which the government in power is so unsure of itself and of its legitimacy that it has to imprison and torture a 33 year old woman for writings on a blog…

Afghanistan: Record winter casualties for US-led occupying forces
By Patrick O’Connor
February 1 2010 – Last month 44 US and coalition troops were killed in Afghanistan—the bloodiest month of fighting recorded in the country’s winter season since the 2001 invasion. In previous years, the freezing temperatures and snowy conditions have seen a lull in the conflict between the US and NATO led International Security Assistance Force and anti-occupation guerrillas. In January 2009 there were 25 coalition troop deaths; in the same month in 2008 14 deaths were recorded; while in January 2007 just two soldiers died. Last month’s violence followed record annual fatalities in 2009 for the occupation forces—520, compared to 295 in 2008…

Tony Blair is guilty of mass murder
Sabah Jawad & Peter Brierley
January 31, 2010 – ‘Tony Blair should be tried for his crimes against Iraq—and the legacy the war has left there. A million Iraqis have died, leaving millions orphaned and widowed. The war and occupation have made as many as four million people into refugees. The whole infrastructure of Iraq has been devastated by the occupation. Our heritage has been looted and destroyed, the environment has been poisoned and vital water sources have been lost. Iraq used to be the breadbasket of the region—now once fertile lands are in danger of being transformed into a desert. Children are growing up suffering from disease and deformities. Sectarianism has been elevated to all state institutions and the country is dangerously fragmented…

January 31, 2010 – In late January, the Justice Department’s Office of the Inspector General released a report that provided startling new details on illegal operations by the FBI’s Communications Analysis Unit (CAU) and America’s grifting telecoms. For years, AT&T, Verizon, MCI and others fed the Bureau phone records of journalists and citizens under the guise of America’s endless, and highly profitable, “War on Terror.” Between 2002 and 2007, the FBI illegally collected more than 4,000 U.S. telephone records, citing bogus terrorism threats or simply by persuading telephone companies to hand over the records…

Pakistan: US drones killed 123 civilians, three al-Qaeda men in January
By Amir Mir
February 01, 2010 – Afghanistan-based US predators carried out a record number of 12 deadly missile strikes in the tribal areas of Pakistan in January 2010, of which 10 went wrong and failed to hit their targets, killing 123 innocent Pakistanis. The remaining two successful drone strikes killed three al-Qaeda leaders, wanted by the Americans. The rapid increase in the US drone attacks in the Pakistani tribal areas bordering Afghanistan can be gauged from the fact that only two such strikes were carried out in January 2009, which killed 36 people. The highest number of drone attacks carried out in a single month in 2009 was six, which were conducted in December last year. But the dawn of the New Year has already seen a dozen such attacks…

Hillary Clinton’s Prescription: Make The World A NATO Protectorate

January 31, 2010 – U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was busy in London and Paris last week advancing the new Euro-Atlantic agenda for the world. As the top foreign policy official of what her commander-in-chief Barack Obama touted as being the world’s sole military superpower on December 10, she is no ordinary foreign minister. Her position is rather some composite of several ones from previous historical epochs: Viceroy, proconsul, imperial nuncio. When a U.S. secretary of state speaks the world pays heed. Any nation that doesn’t will suffer the consequences of that inattention, that disrespect toward the imperatrix mundi…

Israel is stealing Palestinian water
By Nabil Sahli
February 1, 2010 – Recent reports have highlighted the acute water shortage facing Palestinian towns and villages in the West Bank and Bethlehem in particular – and noted that the average Israeli settler consumes six times more water than the average Palestinian. This is despite the latter’s rights to the sources as the original owner of the land, albeit an owner who is denied access by the Israeli military occupation. Water use by colonial settlers includes filling and topping-up their swimming pools as well as garden sprinklers for immaculate lawns. Close observers of the settlement process will realise that confiscation of water sources has always been a priority for the Israeli colonisers. It was in this context that in a document written in 1941 David Ben Gurion, the Zionist leader and Israel’s first Prime Minister, said that the waters of the Jordan River and the Litani River [in present-day Lebanon] must be included in the borders of the future Jewish state for it to survive…

4 NATO troops, 1 from US, die in Afghan fighting
By ROBERT H. REID Associated Press Write
February 1, 2010 — Four NATO service members — including one American — were killed in action Monday, the deadliest day for the international force in more than two weeks. Combat deaths are still running at higher levels than in recent years even through the traditional winter fighting lull. The American service member, who was not identified, died in a roadside bombing in southern Afghanistan, the NATO command announced. Two other soldiers, whose nationalities were not released, were killed in a firefight in the south, the main theater of the war. Spain’s Defense Ministry said one Spanish soldier was killed and six were wounded when their vehicle struck a bomb while escorting a U.N. relief convoy near Qali-i-Naw, 340 miles (550 kilometers) west of Kabul..

By Khalid Amayreh in the West Bank
February 1, 2010 – Writing in the Ha’aretz newspaper on Thursday, 28 January, under the title “holocaust remembrance is a boon for Israeli propaganda,” the noted Israeli journalist Gideon Levy accused Israel of employing the holocaust memory as a Public Relations gimmick to divert attention from the savagery and brutality meted out to the Palestinians. “When the world is talking Goldstone, we talk Holocaust, as if out to blur the impression. When the world talks occupation, we’ll talk Iran as if we wanted them to forget.”…

US frame-up of Aafia Siddiqui begins to unravel
Pakistani victim of rendition and torture
By Ali Ismail
February 1, 2010 – Pakistani neuroscientist Aafia Siddiqui went on trial in a federal courtroom in New York City on January 19, charged with the attempted murder of US personnel in Afghanistan’s Ghazni Province in 2008. The case against Dr. Siddiqui, 37, is rapidly unraveling due to lack of evidence and discordant testimony from witnesses. It is becoming increasingly evident that the charges amount to a frame-up that has been staged to cover up the fact that Siddiqui, along with her eldest son, had been held without charges in the US military’s notorious Bagram prison in Afghanistan between 2003 and 2008 where they were subjected to torture. Two of Dr. Siddiqui’s younger children are still missing…

February 1, 2010 – On 12 January, The New York Times carried an article by David Brooks on Jews and Israel. It so caught my eye that I decided to bring it to my class on the economic history of the Middle East. I sent my students the link to the article and asked them to read it carefully and come to class prepared to discuss and dissect its contents. My students recalled various parts of the New York Times article, but no one explained its substance. They recalled David Brooks’ focus on the singular intellectual achievements of American Jews, the enviable record of Israeli Jews as innovators and entrepreneurs, the mobility of Israel’s new class of innovators, etc. One student even spoke of what was not in the article or in the history of Jews — centuries of Jewish “struggle” to create a Jewish state in Palestine…

Authorities stripped more than 2,700 of these Jordanians of their nationality between 2004 and 2008, and the practice continued in 2009, Human Rights Watch said.
