Blood is His Argument: Tony Blair’s Gentle Cuddling at Iraq “Inquiry”
Chris Floyd
January 29, 2010 – …Blair’s appearance before the panel has occasioned some entirely misplaced and uninformed kudos from some in the American progressiverse, who laud the Brits for holding such a bold inquiry. “It’s the kind of thing you would never see in the United States,” they say, forgetting, if they ever knew, such minor matters as the Watergate hearings — which actually had the power to send people to jail for lying, unlike the completely powerless Chilcot panel — or the Watergate grand jury, which named a sitting president as an “unindicted co-conspirator” in a criminal case, or even the impeachment of William Jefferson Clinton by the United States Senate, which I believe happened well within the adulthood of at least some of our leading progressives. In any case, there was never any chance that the well-wadded Chilcot worthies were going to lay a glove on former PM turned corporate shill and Catholic saint-in-waiting. Blair was never going to do anything but repeat the bluster — and outright lies — he has regurgitated ad infinitum about his blood-soaked adventure with George W. Bush — and the Chilcotniks were never going to call him on his bullshit…

Traffickers targeting Haiti’s children, human organs, Haitian PM says
By Tom Evans, CNN
January 29, 2010 – Trafficking of children and human organs is occurring in the aftermath of the earthquake that devastated parts of Haiti, killed more than 150,000 people, and left many children orphans, Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive said Wednesday. “There is organ trafficking for children and other persons also, because they need all types of organs,” Bellerive said in an exclusive interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour. He did not give specifics, but asked by Amanpour if there is trafficking of children, Bellerive said, “The reports I received say yes.”..

Breaking the Silence publishes shocking testimonies from women who served Occupation
Philip Weiss
January 29, 2010 – There’s a new and shocking booklet of testimonies out from Breaking the Silence, this one from anonymous female soldiers who served in the Occupied Territories and routinely abused the “Arabs” or “illegal aliens.” Because they could, or needed to. Ynet has published many of the testimonies, and they’re horrifying/nightmarish, all about the kind of warped psychological/gender power abuse that people talk about in David Hare plays or in Eastern European memoirs. What if these stories of sexualized humiliation were published in the U.S.? (Noam Sheizaf asks). Don’t worry, they won’t be…

UN Secret Detention Report Asks, “Where Are the CIA Ghost Prisoners?”
Andy Worthington
January 29, 2010 – A major new report on secret detention policies around the world, conducted by four independent UN human rights experts, concludes that, “On a global scale, secret detention in connection with counter-terrorist policies remains a serious problem,” and, “If resorted to in a widespread and systematic manner, secret detention might reach the threshold of a crime against humanity.” The 226-page report, published on Wednesday in an advance unedited version, is the culmination of a year-long joint study by the Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, the Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms while countering terrorism, the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention and the Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances. It will be presented to the UN Human Rights Council in March…

London conference on Afghanistan: Occupation will last for years to come
By Chris Marsden
January 29, 2010 – The London conference on Afghanistan laid down a scenario for the country’s military occupation stretching over at least 5 years and, according to Afghan President Hamid Karzai, as long as 15 years. Gone was President Barack Obama’s claim that withdrawal of US troops would begin by 2011, replaced by a region-by-region transfer of responsibility that will take several years and will be dictated by “conditions on the ground,” as determined by the military. There is to be a concerted effort to incorporate various Afghan warlords presently associated with the Taliban insurgency into a power-sharing government with Karzai and split off upwards of 12,000 Afghan fighters, using a slush fund of over $650 million provided by the US, Japan, Britain, Germany and others…

Palestinian Information Center
January 29, 2010 – An Israeli court in the occupied city of Jerusalem has forced Thursday a Palestinian Jerusalemite family out of their home and gave it to Israeli settlers alleging they own “half” of the house. The court also fined the true owners of the house, Palestinian citizen Fatima Al-Dahoodi 5,000 US dollars in addition to paying 1,750 US dollars for alleged contempt charges instead of putting her in jail. Zuhair al-Dahoodi, husband of Fatima, disclosed that the court asked them to surrender the key of the house after they become “no longer the only owners of the house”, and that the Israeli settlers have the full right to dwell in it…

Organizations from Greece, Ireland and Sweden have also promised to send boats to join the flotilla with the Free Gaza movement and Turkey. Obama’s DOJ Clears Torture Memo Authors John Yoo, Jay Bybee of Professional Misconduct
Jason Leopold
January 29, 2010 – A long-awaited Department of Justice watchdog report that probed whether John Yoo and his former boss Jay Bybee violated professional standards when they provided the Bush White House with legal advice on torture has cleared both men of misconduct, according to Newsweek, citing unnamed sources who have seen the document. An earlier version of the report, prepared by the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) and completed in December 2008, actually concluded that Yoo, a Berkeley law professor, and Bybee, now a federal appeals court judge on the 9th Circuit, violated professional standards when they drafted an August 2002 legal opinion that authorized CIA officers to use brutal methods when interrogating suspected terrorist detainees…

Many Gazans remain homeless one year after siege
UN offers temporary mud-brick houses
By Nasser Najjar
January 29, 2010 – Thousands of Gazans were made homeless during Israel’s three-week military offensive against the Hamas-ruled territory a year ago. Most Gazans are still living in tents. Majid Al Athamna is one of these homeless people but he is considered lucky to receive the key to his new house from the UN officials. He left his tent to live in a mud house, which the officials told him was just a temporary replacement for the house the Israelis demolished nearly a year ago…

Iraq snapshot – January 29, 2010
The Common Ills
January 29, 2010 – …Today the one-time prime minister who may have forever tained the Labour Party, the full-time War Criminal who should be behind bars, the forever poodle who spents years sniffing Bush’s ass Tony Blair provided testimony to the Iraq Inquiry in London (here for transcript and video options). The various apologists for Blair are whining that the world is full of Blair Haters. First, the world was full of Nixon Haters. When you’re a War Criminal, your reputation travels. But even more hilarious is when the idiots claim that Blair is unfairly being treated, unfairly being called a liar and more. Where there is stupidity, there is Alastair Campbell. The twit tweets on Twitter. He also blogs. And he wants the world to know they shouldn’t call Tony Blair a “liar.” Tony Blair lies, that makes him a liar. We’re not going to waste an entire snapshot fact checking that horrid liar…
