Israeli Theft of Palestinian Property
Stephen Lendman
January 7, 2010 – Adalah, meaning justice in Arabic, is the legal center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel advocating through Israeli Supreme Court petitions; lawsuits and appeals to the District, Magistrate and Labor Courts; pre-petitions to the Attorney General; and various other ways to serve its constituency in a nation where only Jews have rights. It also prepares publications and reports on vital issues of concern to Palestinians, including two recent ones on the theft of their property, an ongoing international law violation since Israel’s “War of Independence” – a six-month atrocity that expelled about 800,000 people, massacred many others, destroyed 531 villages, 11 urban neighborhoods in cities like Tel-Aviv, Haifa and Jerusalem, and stole 78% of historic Palestine as the first step toward seizing it all for exclusive Jewish use…

Afghan Islamic Press, via>Juan Cole, Informed Comment
January 7, 2010 – The deputy leader of the Taleban, Mullah Berader, has said that if the foreign “aggressor forces” persist with their activities in Afghanistan, they should not expect the Taleban to “soften their posture” either and if they wanted peace they must withdraw their forces. The following is the text of an “exclusive” interview given by Mullah Berader to the private Pakistan-based Afghan Islamic Press news agency, put out by the agency on 31 December

US pushing Pakistan into the abyss of oblivion
By Zafar Bangash
January 7, 2010 – …When the Pakistan army and American drones kill innocent civilians, it is unrealistic to expect that people will not react. Each killing escalates resentment and stokes the urge to exact revenge, a long-established tradition in that part of the world. Victims have long memories; they do not easily forget their dead no matter how many rhetorical phrases are hurled at them. If for 3,000 American deaths on 9/11, the US can attack two countries and murder more than 1.5 million people, why is it so difficult to understand that other people will feel equally hurt and seek revenge? The ruling elites in Pakistan should understand that they have aligned themselves with the enemy — the US government — against their own people for a fistful of dollars…

Settler Violence Report: November – December 2009
Ahmad Jaradat, Alternative Information Center (AIC)
January 7, 2010 – …On 11 December, in the very early hours of the morning, dozens of settlers from the Tabouh settlement in the Salfeet district entered the Hasan Khader Mosque in Yasouf village, in the east of the district, and burned all materials inside; they also damaged dozens of copies of the holy book of Quran. The settlers’ attacks occurred while the residents were sleeping. Abed-Elkareem Musleh, Mayor of village, reported that “the settlers totally burned the second floor of the Mosque. Later in the morning Israeli Civil Administration officers came to the place and opened an investigation into event. Then they took affidavits from the local people and from the eye-witnesses in the village”. It is well known that very close to the village there are two settlements (Tabouh and Ariel), two bypass roads for settler use, and that the settlers from those settlements attack the villagers from time to time. The residents and media also found some papers with threatening words like “we will kill you all” and “we will burn you with fire”…

Iraq bars major Sunni party from election
By Liz Sly
January 7, 2010 – In a development that bodes ill for the prospects of national reconciliation in Iraq, a prominent Sunni party has been barred from participating in March elections because of its leader’s alleged ties to the outlawed Baath Party that ruled the country under Saddam Hussein, officials said Thursday. The decision could have significant ramifications for a general election that U.S. officials hope will stabilize Iraq enough for American troops to withdraw in large numbers and leave behind a peaceful country. The Justice and Accountability Committee charged with checking that candidates don’t have ties to Baathists has named Saleh Mutlak, a prominent lawmaker, among those disqualified from the elections, according to the panel’s executive director, Ali Lami…

Guantánamo Recidivism: Mainstream Media Parrot Pentagon Propaganda (Again)
Andy Worthington
January 7, 2010 – Last May, The New York Times uncritically published a front-page story entitled, “1 In 7 Detainees Rejoined Jihad, Pentagon Finds,” in which Elisabeth Bumiller, relying on an unpublished Pentagon report, stated that “74 prisoners released from Guantánamo have returned to terrorism, making for a recidivism rate of nearly 14 percent.” While right-wingers seized on the story as proof that no one should ever be released from Guantánamo, anyone with any sense realized that the Times had just published a propaganda piece on its front page, as the Pentagon had only provided names and “confirmation” for 27 of the 74 prisoners cited in the report…

When Israel snaps its fingers British ministers jump
Stuart Littlewood
January 7, 2010 – While the Viva Palestina convoy drama was being played out, a delegation of senior Israeli military officers cancelled a planned visit to the UK for fear of being arrested over alleged war crimes in Gaza. With the insufferable arrogance we have come to expect from Israelis, deputy foreign minister Danny Ayalon demanded from Britain’s Attorney General, Baroness Scotland, an immediate solution to the “intolerable” situation. “If the British law remains unchanged, this would undermine the good relations between the two countries who share common values and interests. The British must bear in mind that these visits serve both countries,” Ayalon is reported as saying… And David Miliband, foreign secretary, says the British government is determined that arrest threats against visitors of Ms Livni’s stature won’t happen again…

On Nonviolence in the Iranian People’s Movement
Amin Hosoor. via Revolutionary Flowerpot Society
January 7, 2010 – …With the passing of several months from the start of the oppositional and justice-seeking movement of the people, the regime — instead of recognizing the legitimacy of the protests and accepting the people’s just demands — at the same time that it denies the existence of the movement , has resorted to an ever increasingly violent crackdown against the dissidents. As a matter of fact, in their self-made quagmire there is no choice or tool left for the Islamic Republic but naked oppression and militarism. The continuation of the current conditions has led to a situation whereby the people, in order to guard and maintain their movement, must resort to standing up ever more powerfully in the streets. In the events of the day of Ashura, despite the immensity of the repression, people displayed unparalleled courage and resistance, and elevated the movement to a higher level of self-confidence and determination…

Bombing the Land of the Snow Leopard
The War on Afghanistan’s Environment
By JOSHUA FRANK
January 7, 2010 – …Additionally, Pakistani military experts and others have made allegations that the United States has used depleted uranium (DU) shells to target specific targets inside Afghanistan, most notably against the Taliban frontlines in the northern region of the country. Using DU explosives is not far-fetched for the United States. The US-led NATO air force used DU shells when it struck Yugoslavia in 1999. Once these deadly bombs strike, they rip through their target and then erupt into a toxic cloud of fire. Many medical studies have shown that DU’s radioactive vapors are linked to leukemia, blood cancer, lung cancer and birth defects. “As US and NATO forces continue pounding Afghanistan with cruise missiles and smart bombs, people acquainted with the aftermaths of two recent previous wars fought by the US fear, following the Gulf and Balkan war syndromes, the Afghan War Syndrome,” wrote Dr. Ali Ahmed Rind in the Baltimore Chronicle in 2001. “This condition is marked by a state of vague aliments and carcinomas, and is linked with the usage of Depleted Uranium (DU) as part of missiles, projectiles and bombs in the battlefield.”…
