Obama Indicates Escalating US Military Involvement in Yemen
Maya Schenwar
January 2, 2010 – This morning, President Barack Obama for the first time attributed the attempted Christmas Day bombing of a Detroit-bound plane to al Qaeda. In his weekly radio address, Obama painted the bombing attempt as an act of war. He reiterated his intent to continue fighting the US’s “war against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred,” indicating that Yemen could be the next major site of US military involvement…

‘They kept pumping bullets into us’
By Firas Al-Atraqchi
January 2, 2010 – The Iraqi government is under increasing pressure to aggressively pursue the prosecution of American military personnel accused of killing Iraqis. The recent decision by Ricardo Urbina, a district judge, to dismiss charges against five security contractors accused of gunning down 17 Iraqis, including women and children, in September 2007 has re-ignited deep discord among Iraqis, and fuelled suspicions that US personnel operate in a lawless void while in Iraq…

A slice of life in Sheikh Jarrah
by Andrew Kadi
January 2, 2010 – Around 12:30… I went walking down, with an old friend and a new acquaintance, to the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of East Jerusalem so that we could take a closer look at the Palestinian homes Israeli settlers had taken over (denoted by the giant Israeli flags hung from each of the buildings). As we approached the road leading to this flashpoint – settler youth sprinted towards us on their way out of the area up toward Nablus Road (in our direction). They were being chased… apparently by police.

Mubarak is no Abdul Nasser and Galloway is no Salah Eddin, but ‘Israel’ is the problem.
Yousef Abudayyeh
January 2, 2009 – … Without understanding that ‘Israel’ is the core problem in the Arab World, and trying to fashion methods to cripple this colonizing body, all will fail. It’s crucial for all the Internationals who are working in support of Palestine to work against the Zionist colonizers of Palestine. This work should start by forcing their respective governments to stop any kind of support of ‘Israel’, and should continue by facing the Zionists. Doing it face to face in defense of the defenseless Palestinians, like many did and are still doing on the ground in colonized Palestine…Egypt and Jordan and Saudi Arabia, etc., are implicated in much more than enforcing the siege, but the address for imposing that siege and committing war crimes is ‘Israel’…

Targeting human rights defenders
Nadia Hijab
January 2, 2010 – I remember the day I first met Jamal Juma’. He was speaking at a United Nations conference in 2003 about the damage being done by Israel’s wall. The audience was shocked: Many had heard that Israel had started carving a wall in the West Bank in 2002, but they had no idea it could already be seen from outer space. Yet this articulate, handsome Palestinian used facts and visual evidence to show how the wall was expropriating yet more Palestinian land and separating Palestinian communities from each other. One picture Jamal showed us still breaks my heart: a middle-aged Palestinian farmer with a tear trickling down his cheek. The olive grove he had inherited from his father had just been bulldozed to make way for the wall. He had not only lost his livelihood; he had also been unable to protect his family’s trust, the symbol of everything that had gone into making them Palestinian. Now Jamal is in jail…

Comrade Itiani: 2009 was a year of repression and steadfastness for Palestinian prisoners
PFLP – Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine
January 2, 2010 – Comrade Maysar Itiani, prisoners’ affairs activist, said on January 1, 2010 that the year 2009 saw a continuation of the repressive measures and practices against our brave prisoners in the jails of the occupation, including a marked increase in the use of solitary confinement, isolation, and imposition of restrictions and sanctions upon them. She particularly noted that prisoners from Gaza have been denied family visits for three years. In an interview with Al-Quds TV, she denounced the separation of Gaza prisoners from their families, saying that it has taken place since 2007, when the occupation Knesset labeled prisoners from Gaza “illegal combatants,” a practice upheld by the occupation courts, illustrating the nature of the occupation courts as part and parcel of the structure of the Zionist project…
