Weapons of Mass Destruction Used in Gaza
Press release by Newweapons Working Group
December 16, 2009 – We have analyzed the content of 35 elements in 4 craters derived from: 2 bombing events in Gaza in 2006, one in Beit Hanoun, one in Jabalia camp, and 2 bombings in 2009, both in Tufah, the Gaza suburb. We have also analyzed the powder remaining inside a shell of an exploded White Phosphorus bomb THS89D112-003 155MM M825E1 collected at Al Wafa in January 2009 […] The use of devices that carry and spread to unknown distances high amounts of toxic metals poses the question of the present contamination in the territory of the strip of Gaza. One report on the presence of metals in the soil of Gaza, with samples in 170 locations, published in 2005, could be a reference for comparison, if a more systematic collection of samples is undertaken, as it should. The potentially widespread contamination of the soil, concurrent with the conditions of the displaced population that lives in this environment close to the ground and exposed to the possible contaminants, with the possibility of skin, respiratory and alimentary chronic assumption, urges to undertake further studies. At a distance of years these should be directed to test of contamination of humans, crops and food animals. In addition, there are some potential remediation strategies that could be applied to the population, which might reduce the damage from metal contamination…

Britain’s Foreign Office wimps surrender to the thugs
Stuart Littlewood
December 16, 2009 – The British public must be wondering what has happened to the nation’s backbone – and its moral compass – when they see news items like these. “British Foreign Secretary David Miliband yesterday apologized to MK Tzipi Livni and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman for the arrest warrant issued against Livni in London earlier this week. He also promised Lieberman to begin working immediately to change the UK laws that enable the issue of arrest warrants against Israeli officials accused of war crimes.” Who does this foreign secretary think he is, apologising in our name for the operation of British law, especially when the warrant was issued to answer well-founded charges of war crimes?…

Poverty trap – Iraqi refugees in Syria
IRIN News
December 16, 2009 – Aseel Ali*, aged 16, and her mother – both refugees from Iraq – earn just enough (US$174 per month between them) in a Damascus handicraft workshop to pay their rent and buy food. “I have to help my mother as our savings ran out,” Aseel told IRIN. “We start early in the morning and finish at 4pm, and also take work home,” she said. Aseel’s family fled to Egypt in 2006. In 2007 her father went back to Iraq for a short visit but has since gone missing. After their savings dried up, the family returned to Iraq in January 2009 on one of the free government-organized flights designed to stimulate returns, but the family received fresh death threats and Aseel’s 12-year-old brother was kidnapped and tortured. Once he was released, his mother decided they should flee again – this time to Syria…

New York-based foundation supports settler rabbi who justified the killing of non-Jews
Adam Horowitz
December 16, 2009 – A little over a year ago we began an investigation on this site into the Central Fund for Israel, a New York-based non profit foundation that raises tax deductible donations in the U.S. to support the Israeli settler movement. We found that they are funding settler militias, and that they have some very well know donors. Writing in Haaretz, Akiva Eldar has now expanded upon the story by uncovering that the Central Fund is also supporting the the Od Yosef Chai Shechem yeshiva in the West Bank settlement Yitzhar near Nablus…

Torture in Afghanistan: UK Court Orders Release of Evidence
Andy Worthington
December 16, 2009 – Reprieve, the legal action charity, the lawyers of which represent dozens of prisoners still held at Guantánamo, won a court victory in the case of the British resident Shaker Aamer, which appears to draw on the organization’s success in securing a judicial review in the case of another of their clients, Binyam Mohamed. Initiated in May 2008, this led, eventually, to a fast-track review of Mohamed’s case by the Obama administration, and his return to the UK in February of this year. The key to the pressure exerted by Reprieve is torture and, specifically, what the British government knew about the torture of both men while in US custody..

Austria: Genocide Charges against Ehud Barak
Kawther Salam
December 16, 2009 – Yesterday, at almost the same time when Ehud Barak was being given military honors at Ehud Barakthe defense ministry, genocide charges against him were being presented at the office of the Austrian prosecutor, only about 15 minutes walking away. The charges relate entirely to the Gaza massacre committed between December 2008 and January 2009 by Israeli troops under the command of Ehud Barak, and the whole allegation of crimes in the letter to the prosecutor consists of the so-called “Goldstone Report” itself, and it names as witnesses the members of the commission, judge Goldstone and his colleagues, as well as their interview partners…

Silently Stealing Jerusalem
By Joharah Baker for MIFTAH
December 16, 2009 – The number is staggering, to say the least. A total of 4,577 Palestinian residents of Jerusalem were stripped of their residency rights in 2008 alone, 35 percent of all east Jerusalemites who lost their residency rights since 1967 and more than any average year since Israel’s occupation of the eastern sector of the city almost 42 years ago. For the less versed in the ways of Israel where Palestinian residency rights in Jerusalem are concerned, here is a quick rundown. Upon Israel’s occupation in 1967 of east Jerusalem, those Palestinians who had stayed in their homes were included in Israel’s census of the city and granted “permanent residency”…

December 16, 2009 – Fuad Hussein, chief of staff to President Massoud Barzani of Iraq’s Kurdistan region, told editors and reporters of The Washington Times on Tuesday that the White House commitment last week was historic. The Lobby Within
Ramzy Baroud
December 16, 2009 – A just and peaceful solution to the protracted Palestinian-Israeli conflict is only possible when the US ceases to block every attempt made towards it. This assertion might raise many questions, for example, just how is one to define a just and peaceful resolution? And for what reasons would the US obstruct such a possibility, considering that stability in the Middle East is, or at least should be a top American priority? A just and peaceful resolution is difficult to define, considering that the conception of justice varies both in definition and interpretation. In the case of this conflict, the long-held assumption is that a just resolution is one that would be consistent with international and humanitarian laws, and which would enjoy the largest possible consensus worldwide…

Gallows.
Layla Anwar
December 16, 2009 – Since the pro-occupation, sectarian Shiite, Iranian puppet government came to power, over and above illegal detention and torture, executions (with no trial) are common practice to the extent that even the dead wood, sleeping, snoring UN has voiced its “concern”. A friend – thanks A.H – sent me this right now. 14 December 2009 – The resumption of the death penalty in Iraq earlier this year is a source of great concern to the United Nations, according to the world body’s latest report covering the human rights situation in the country. Iraqi officials have cited security conditions as a reason for the resumption of the executions, which had not been carried out since August 2007, this May, the new publication said.
“The secrecy surrounding the executions remained an additional issue of concern,” it noted. …

US silent on Taliban’s al-Qaeda offer
By Gareth Porter
December 16, 2009 – The Barack Obama administration is refusing to acknowledge an offer by the leadership of the Taliban in early December to give “legal guarantees” that they will not allow Afghanistan to be used for attacks on other countries. The administration’s silence on the offer, despite a public statement by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton expressing skepticism about any Taliban offer to separate itself from al-Qaeda, effectively leaves the door open to negotiating a deal with the Taliban based on such a proposal. The Taliban, however, have chosen to interpret the Obama administration’s position as one of rejection of their offer. The Taliban offer, included in a statement dated December 4 and e-mailed to news organizations the following day, said the organization had “no agenda of meddling in the internal affairs of other countries and is ready to give legal guarantees if foreign forces withdraw from Afghanistan”…

U.S. Creates Its Antithesis in Iraq
Nicola Nasser
December 16, 2009 – …Indeed, given the “continuity” of Bush’s policies in Iraq, Bush’s successor is not less responsible for the current status quo in the country if he doesn’t reverse course, which incumbent President Obama did not so far. The invasion was illegitimate, the ensuing occupation is still illegitimate, the proxy regime the U.S. occupying power is still trying to install in Baghdad is illegitimate, and no artificially and hastily drafted and instituted constitution and election law could legitimize an illegitimate status quo in Iraq. Illegitimacy of the status quo in Iraq is further questioned by the bitter and tragic inhumane fruits of the status quo. What elections as indicator of democracy could any objective observer perceive in a country where the U.S. military adventure has left around five million children orphans, one million child laborers, street vendors or beggars, and three million women widows. At least there are three million Iraqi refugees abroad; the U.N. has estimated that there were about 2 million Iraqi refugees in neighboring Jordan and Syria, and some 2.6 million people displaced within Iraq, in addition to millions of unemployed Iraqis — all constituting more than half of the 27 – million population…

Egypt building US-designed underground wall in attempt to cut Gazans’ lifeline
By Jerry Mazza
December 16, 2009 – It isn’t bad enough that Israel has been walling off Gaza like the Nazis walled off the ghettos of Warsaw, Lodz and Krakow, squeezing the life out of the Jewish people, whose Zionist contingent seems to have forgotten the lesson in “never again,” interpreting it as let’s do it to someone else with less power than we have. Now the US, under orders of Everyman President Obama, most probably with some help from his Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel, IDF in Gulf I, and whose dad fought for the Zionist terror gang Irgun against the Palestinians, has directed the United States Army Corps of Engineers to come up with a vertical underground wall under the border between Egypt and Gaza. So now, we have walls under walls, and soon to be tunnels under walls under walls under tunnels. Send in the clowns. But then it isn’t funny…

Israeli-style ‘justice’ for Berlanty – official version
Stuart Littlewood
December 16, 2009 – The dragged-out scandal of final-year Bethlehem student Berlanty Azzam’s arrest and abduction – handcuffed and blindfolded – and subsequent dumping in Gaza in the middle of the night just weeks before she was due to complete her degree, has horrified the Christian world far beyond the walled-in, imprisoned city of modern-day Bethlehem. Berlanty, a young Christian girl, is being persecuted and cruelly denied her inalienable rights by the illegal invader and occupier, just like any of her Muslim friends and neighbours. She was snatched by the Israeli military while returning from a job interview in Ramallah. That was around six weeks ago. Since then she has been forced to kick her heels far from the University at this most important time in her studies… and in her young life…

This wall apparently extends not only above ground, but deep into the ground in an attempt to prevent Palestinians digging the tunnels that have become a lifeline for the territory…

Diplomat fires back over Afghan prison torture with new revelations
Canadian Press.
December 16, 2009 – Canada stubbornly refused to monitor Afghan prisoners, some of whom disappeared into unofficial “black site” jails, until public attention left it no choice, diplomat Richard Colvin claims in a stinging letter filed with a House of Commons committee. The 16-page, point-by-point critique of testimony and public claims by federal officials is laced with several new allegations that will no doubt feed the political wildfire burning over the prison torture issue. The intent of the letter, delivered Wednesday to the special committee on Afghanistan, was to rebut critics who’ve tried to tear apart his claims of abuse in Afghan jails and what Canada knew about it…

Targeting Lawyers: The Case of Paul Bergrin

December 16, 2009 – The Constitution’s Sixth Amendment assures defendants in “all criminal prosecutions” the right to speedy, public, fair trials with “the Assistance of (competent) Counsel for his (or her) defense” provided free if unable to pay for it. The Fourteenth Amendment holds government subservient to the law and guarantees due process respect for everyone’s legal right to judicial fairness on matters relating to life, liberty, or property. In America and elsewhere, defending unpopular clients is a long, honored tradition. So is upholding the law and challenging unfettered power that defiles it. Yet doing it risks lawyers being criminalized for doing their job too vigorously or making enemies of powerful, influential government or business officials in the process…

Obama’s Afghan escalation and the decay of democracy
Bill Van Auken
December 16, 2009 – With President Barack Obama approaching his first anniversary in office, his escalation of the Afghanistan war is writing a new chapter in the history of Washington’s shredding of democratic forms of rule in order to further militarist aggression abroad. This has become increasingly clear since the announcement earlier this month of the plan to send an additional 30,000 US soldiers and Marines to Afghanistan. It was further spelled out in Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize speech in Oslo, where he enunciated what has been widely described as the “Obama doctrine.”…

Sexual Harassment.
Layla Anwar
December 16, 2009 – …And before concluding this post, I must add something else. That even though it is true that sexual harassment in public places does exist in the Arab world, I feel safer walking the streets of Cairo, Damascus, Beirut, Amman at night than I do in any Western country, and definitely safer than America. Even though it is true that women are sexually harassed, it stays for the most part limited to language as in comments but rarely degenerates to acts of sexual assault like in the West. I remember being terrified walking through parking lots, subway stations, campuses, parks and even main streets in Paris, London or New York. Terrified of being assaulted, robbed, raped or killed by male gangs or men high on drugs or alcohol. It’s kind of strange that Baghdad since 2003 has become a copy of any big American or European capital where women feel fearful all the time. Or maybe that’s not so strange after all…
