Secret but not forgotten – Israel’s facility 1391
Middle East Monitor
December 11, 2009 – In May of this year, the United Nations Committee Against Torture bought up the issue of Facility 1391, a clandestine Israeli prison where Palestinian, Lebanese, and other Arab prisoners are detained and subjected to torture. The committee called upon Israel to grant the International Committee of the Red Cross access to this prison and demanded to know if there were other secret prisons in Israel. The existence of Facility 1391 came to light in 2002, purely by accident. An Israeli human rights group, Hamoked, which provides assistance to Palestinian prisoners, demanded to know where Bashar and Mohammed Jadallah, two Palestinian cousins who could not be traced by their families after their arrest by the Israeli army, were being held…

US air strikes kill ‘exactly 30? enemies every time
By Daniel Tencer
December 11, 2009 – When it comes to air strikes against the Taliban, there’s something about the number 30, says the Security Crank blog. The unnamed military affairs blogger has published a list of recent air strikes against militants in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and an amazing pattern has emerged: It seems that just about every time an air strike is reported in the news, the Taliban casualty figure cited is 30. Citing the Moon of Alabama blog, which made a similar argument this spring, Security Crank linked to 12 news reports of separate air strike incidents since the start of the year in which the number of Taliban or insurgent casualties was reported to be 30, in most cases citing US military officials. Not 29, not 31. Thirty. What does this mean? For the Security Crank, it means we just shouldn’t believe the numbers…

The plight and flight of Palestinian Christians
Dr Hanan Chehata
December 11, 2009 – The “Palestinian problem” is usually perceived to be a “Muslim” problem; a conflict between the Jews and the Muslims and, for the most part, it is. However, it is easy to forget that amidst all of the politics and international wrangling there is another small but extremely important group who also have a deep rooted and valid claim to what is undoubtedly the most disputed “Holy Land” in the world. It may only constitute an extremely small minority of the entire population (estimates range from anywhere between 2.3%-1.5%) but the Palestinian Arab Christians living in Palestine/Israel also have a legitimate historical and spiritual claim to the land…

Jewish terrorists torch West Bank Mosque, scrawl Nazi slogans
From Khalid Amayreh in the West Bank
December 11, 2009 – In what seems to signal an escalation of organized Jewish terror against Palestinians and their property, suspected Jewish terrorists on Friday torched a mosque in the northern West Bank. Palestinians sources said armed settlers from a nearby settlement threw flammable substance inside the Hasan Khadr Mosque at the village of Yasuf near Salfit, 15 kilometers, south west of Nablus. The incident occurred around 4:00 am shortly before dawn…

Iraq snapshot – December 11, 2009
The Common Ills
December 11, 2009 – …As the Chilcot inquiry heard yesterday from Sir John Sawers, the new head of MI6, who was in Iraq immediately after Saddam’s overthrow, the “de-Baathification” policy implemented by the US-led coalition resulted in tens of thousands of Sunnis being thrown out of their jobs because of their support for Saddam’s regime, and for his Baath political party. During the insurgency that followed, hundreds of thousands of Sunnis fled Baghdad and other areas to seek sanctuary in Syria. When Saddam was in power, there were an estimated five million Sunnis living in Baghdad. Today, that figure has declined to just a few hundred thousand: Baghdad is now a Shia city, where many prominent politicians are in the pay of their co-religionists in Iran…

The Devil and Mr. Obama
Barack promised change — and sure enough, things changed for the worse
Joe Bageant
December 11, 2009 – …Under cover of being the first “black” president, Obama is looking to best one of the Bush administration’s records. And that is causing unshirted hell for anybody two shades darker than a paper bag, particularly if they are wearing sandals (Obama himself being only one shade darker than the bag and given to size eleven black Cole Haans). So far, two million Pakistanis have been, in official US State Department jargon, “displaced” by U.S. backed bombing and gunfire — which will surely displace a fellow if anything will. A significant portion of them are “living with host families.” Translation: packed into crowded houses ten to a room, wiping out food and water supplies, crashing already fragile sanitation infrastructure, and serving as a giant human Petrie dish for intestinal and respiratory diseases. Many more are still living in the “conflict area.” Makes it sound like living next door to a neighborhood domestic squabble, doesn’t it? God only knows how many more innocent people will yet be killed in the conflict area of Obama’s “war of necessity.” You know, the “good war.” The war that is supposed to offset the interminable bad one in Iraq, where we continue to occupy and build more bases…

Where the Crimes Go Unpunished
Who Cares About Gaza?
By BRIAN CLOUGHLEY
December 11, 2009 – Gaza? Where’s that? Have you heard about it recently? It doesn’t figure on the list of important matters for consideration by the world’s presidents and prime ministers. It has vanished from the media. Most people couldn’t care less about a generation of Palestinians who are subjected to viciously inflicted privation by an imperialist nation that has lost touch with humanity. Most countries, most human beings, with predictable exceptions, condemned Israel for indulging in frenzied savagery during its blitzkrieg on Gaza last December and January. There is no doubt that many of its actions were criminal. For example, there are well-documented instances of use of white phosphorus artillery shells against civilians. Poison gas, in other words – if a bit more hi-tech than the venomous vapors that exterminated so many millions of innocent Jewish men, women and children in Nazi concentration camps. But Israel, propped up as a strutting jackbooted puppet on the global stage by the well-muscled fingers of Washington and some other capitals whose endorsement of violence seems boundless, can get away, quite literally, with murder…

By Mazal Mualem and Barak Ravid, Haaretz Correspondents

Following the Money Trail: Telecoms and ISPs Feed the Secret State’s Surveillance Machine
by Tom Burghardt
December 11, 2009 – “Follow the money.” And why not. As the interface between state and private criminality, following the money trail is oxygen and combustible fuel for rooting out corruption in high places: indelible signs left behind like toxic tracks by our sociopathic masters. After all, there’s nothing quite like exposing an exchange of cold, hard cash from one greedy fist to another to focus one’s attention on the business at hand. And when that dirty business is the subversion of the American people’s right to privacy, there’s also nothing quite like economic self-interest for ensuring that a cone of silence descends over matters best left to the experts; a veritable army of specialists squeezing singular advantage out of any circumstance, regardless of how dire the implications for our democracy. In light of this recommendation researcher Christopher Soghoian, deploying the tools of statistical analysis and a keen sense of outrage, reaffirmed that “Internet service providers and telecommunications companies play a significant, yet little known role in law enforcement and intelligence gathering.”..

Obama W.Bush.
Layla Anwar
December 11, 2009 – This is Obama’s real name. Forget the Barack, the Hussein… This name was coined by a smart writer for the New Statesman called Mehdi Hassan and a very appropriate one too. When receiving the Nobel “Peace” Prize, this “peacemaker” of the West, offered a striking defense for more American warmongering, murder and theft… He said that “Evil should be vigorously opposed”, a shadow standing in the footsteps of his spiritual father Bush : “I face the world as it is, and cannot stand idle in the face of threats to the American people,” he told his audience in Oslo. “For make no mistake: Evil does exist in the world.” A passionate clamor for more, more and more, American “self-defense” and “moral” necessity. With a surge of over 30’000 additional American “brave boys” read torturers, killers and rapists to Afghanistan, it is clear who this charlatan praised by the American “left” means by Evil. Meanwhile, the devil’s aide, R.Gates is in Kirkuk -Iraq, stressing the crucial importance of American troops in Iraq. Adding that the mission of the American murderers is still”critical” and vital in this country of Ruins…

Accepting peace prize, Obama makes case for unending war

December 11, 2009 – In the most bellicose Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech within living memory, President Barack Obama made an argument Thursday in Oslo for ever-widening war and neo-colonial occupation, putting the world on notice that the American ruling elite intends to push ahead with its drive for global domination. by Rick Rozoff, Stop NATO
December 11, 2009 – President and commander-in-chief of the armed forces of the United States Barack Obama delivered his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance address in Oslo on December 10, which has immediately led to media discussion of an Obama Doctrine. With obligatory references to Martin Luther King, Jr. and Mohandas Gandhi (the second referred to only by his surname) but to no other American presidents than Ronald Reagan, Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy – fellow peace prize recipients Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson and Jimmy Carter weren’t mentioned – the U.S. head of state spoke with the self-assurance of the leader of the world’s first uncontested superpower and at times with the self-righteousness of a would-be prophet and clairvoyant. Winning prize for peace while advocating war
Sayed Dhansay
December 11, 2009 – United States President Barack Obama has just accepted the Nobel Peace Prize at a ceremony in Oslo. His nomination had been controversial, not least because he is continuing and escalating two illegal wars of aggression in Iraq and Afghanistan, but also because it was awarded to him at the beginning of his term, before he has proven a genuine willingness to promote peace. Though his eloquent and moving speech in Cairo last June spoke of “peace,” “mutual respect” and “new beginnings” with the Arab and Muslim world, his administration’s foreign policy has thus far proven otherwise. The glaring contradiction between his words and actions are nowhere else more obvious than in his dealing with the Palestinian-Israeli conflict…

December 11, 2009 – …Everyone heard about what happened in Nouristan. Our Mujahidin carried out a series of successful operations against the Americans, and we have come to learn that when Americans suffer casualties they run away from the battle. And what happened in Nouristan is just a repetition of what happened in numerous other areas: Many fierce attacks with many Americans dead and injured, their tanks burned, and their shelters destroyed. What we can say happened in Nouristan is the total destruction of the principal American base. Now the policy of the foreign invaders is to shelter themselves by civilian sheilds, in market places and where ever there is a concentration of the population. Even so, they must remember the lessons of Kabul marketplace. There they were surrounded and killed and their head quarters destroyed. And in other places too they are not safe, where the think they are safe, patroling in markets such Mandarhar and Kunar, for example. Foreigners are not safe as long as they are in Afghanistan. They must leave otherwise they shall be targets everywhere they go in Afghanistan…

Muslim-Christian bureau: Israeli media incite to destroy the Aqsa Mosque
Palestinian Information Center
December 11, 2009 – The Muslim-Christian bureau in occupied Palestine has warned Thursday that the Israeli media outlets were carrying out an incitement campaign against the Aqsa Mosque and that Arabs and Muslims shouldn’t take this lightly. According to the bureau, the Hebrew media outlets were leading an unprecedented incitement campaign against the Aqsa Mosque through igniting the religious feelings of the Israeli settlers and of charging them with more extremism and aggression. In a press release he made Thursday, Hassan Khater, the secretary-general of the bureau, deplored what was published in the Hebrew Ha’aretz newspaper about a Jewish prophecy alleging that Jews would start constructing the alleged “Third Temple” on the ruins of the Aqsa Mosque on the 16th of March next year. December 11, 2009 – Monday’s revelation from Defense Secretary Robert Gates that “I think it has been years” since the US government has had any solid information about Osama bin Laden should come as no surprise to readers of Antiwar.com, which has been questioning the rationale for the global war on terrorism ever since it was a twinkle in Dick Cheney’s eye. Gates also commented that US intelligence believes that the fugitive terrorists might well be moving about in the border area between Afghanistan and Pakistan. The “where’s Waldo” narrative provided by Gates is somewhat shocking in light of the billions of dollars that have been spent in the search for the slippery Saudi, but it is even more significant in that it completely undercuts the Barack Obama Administration’s case for increasing the number of American troops in Afghanistan…

Who is counting the bodies in Iraq?
By Natalia Antelava, BBC News
December 10, 2009 – “We don’t do body counts.” These were the words of Gen Tommy Franks, the man in charge of the US-led invasion of Iraq. But more than six-and-a-half years after the invasion, the body count has become a critical measure of success and failure in Iraq. In November, officials announced that violent deaths were at their lowest since 2003. That was an important example of progress in Iraq, according to the Iraqi government. Most of the big explosions since August occurred near official buildings. Eight days after the announcement, five massive explosions went off almost simultaneously in different parts of Baghdad, killing and wounding hundreds…
