Afghan Resistance Statement: Obama, following Bush Steps
Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan
December 8, 2009 – This year, the Nobel Prize Committee in Sweden awarded Peace Prize to Obama while his being in the White House less than ten days before the nomination deadline. Ironically, the committee chose him among 205 candidates to win the prize- still less not for any concrete accomplishments but for his inspirational words. It is pity that he will now receive the prize after announcement of troops surge for Afghanistan. This year, USA launched vast military operations in Helmand in South Afghanistan. Ten thousand American troops and almost the same number of British troops participated in the operations named Sword and Panther’s claws. They killed hundreds of innocent Afghans during the most trumpeted operations, the largest ever after the Vietnam war…

When Blood is Their Argument: An Empire on Fire
Chris Floyd
I. News from Baghdad on Tuesday morning, from the New York Times: A series of devastating car bombings rocked Baghdad on Tuesday, killing at least 121 people and wounding hundreds more, according to preliminary accounts by witnesses, the police and hospital officials…The attacks were the worst in December 8, 2009 – Iraq since twin suicide bombings destroyed three ministries on Oct. 25, killing at least 155 people. They fit a pattern of spectacular attacks in the capital, followed by weeks of relative calm. In August, two suicide car bombs exploded near the country’s Finance and Foreign Ministries, killing at least 122. After you have taken a moment to mull this unspeakable rending of human lives — not just the individuals who were killed but also the lifelong, lacerating grief of their survivors — a rending which is a direct result of an American invasion and occupation that not only loosed a savage sectarian war in the shattered, conquered land but also actively abetted it at every turn, go back and read the last paragraph of that excerpt again…

The US cash behind extremist settlers
Andrew Kadi and Aaron Levitt
8 December 2009 – Last month, a Brooklyn-based non-profit organisation called the Hebron Fund, which supports Jewish settlers in the Israeli-occupied city of Hebron, held a fundraiser at the New York Mets’ stadium, Citi Field. The fundraiser went forward despite calls for its cancellation from grassroots human rights organisations from the US, Palestine and Israel. The fact that the Hebron Fund likely raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for extremist Israeli settlers at a major US venue with little public scrutiny is a troubling sign for those who hope that the US can play a constructive role in achieving a just peace in the Middle East…

Adm Mike Mullen: US is losing war in Afghanistan
By Alex Spillius in Washington
December 8, 2009 – “This is the most dangerous time I’ve seen growing up the last four decades in uniform,” Adm Mike Mullen told audiences of soldiers and marines, some of whom are weeks away from flying to conflict. “We are not winning, which means we are losing and as we are losing, the message traffic out there to [insurgency] recruits keeps getting better and better and more keep coming.” Telling soldiers that he expected to be a tough fight and rising casualties in 2010, he said: “I don’t want to be in any way unclear about that. This is what happened in Iraq during the surge and as tragic as it is, to turn this thing around, it will be a part of this surge, as well.”…

Ramping up Afghanistan war to control Caspian oil and gas transport routes
By Jerry Mazza
December 8, 2009 – The 800-pound gorilla standing in the auditorium at West Point is still waiting for an answer to why Obama made his surge-speech for 30,000 more troops and $30 billion to pay for them. That gorilla wonders “why” Obama pitched so hard for the US to stay and surge through Afghanistan and Pakistan. The reasons given were that the Afghanistan Taliban and Al Qaeda led by Osama bin Laden were the people that attacked us on 9/11, which was an iteration of George W. Bush’s reasons for the War on Terror. They are as phony now as the day Bush promised to smoke out Bin Laden. But, here are Obama’s actual words, pointed out by Christopher Bollyn on page 2 of his article, Why Afghanistan?…

A Wolfowitz in Sheep’s Clothing
Maidhc Ó Cathail
December 8, 2009 – Paul Wolfowitz, the chief architect of the Iraq War, now wants the United States to help refugees. No, not the estimated 4.8 million Iraqis forced to flee their homes in a war he and other pro-Israeli neoconservatives planned as far back as 1992. Instead, the unlikely humanitarian, having brought “democracy” to the Iraqi people in 2003, has turned his attention this year to “the plight of North Korean refugees in China.” In a June 16 Wall Street Journal op-ed titled “How to Help North Korea’s Refugees,” the visiting scholar at the neoconservative American Enterprise Institute expresses his hope that President Obama and South Korean President Lee, who were meeting that day, would find the time to address “this purely humanitarian issue.”…

The Revolution Betrayed
© Steve Amsel
The Shah is dead – Long live Khomeini,
The Shah is dead – Glory to the people,
We rejoiced with you on your victory,
The foreign intruders have finally vanished.
Almost five years have passed,
You should have so much to show us now
But what has gone wrong?
The clocks of time seem to be going backwards.
A Holy War in this day and age?
Brother killing brother in the name of god?…

December 8, 2009 — The high Islamic council, the council of Awqaf and Islamic affairs, heads of churches and Christian and Muslim figures warned Monday of serious Israeli intentions to impose a fait accompli at the Aqsa Mosque and give part of it to Jews. The truth about two men rendered by the UK to Bagram
Reprieve.org
December 8, 2009 – Reprieve’s investigation reveals the identity of one man, Amanatullah Ali, and damning evidence that the British government misled parliament and the public. After years of government denials that the UK had been involved in any rendition operations, in February 2009 then-Secretary of State for Defence John Hutton announced to parliament that UK forces had captured two men in Iraq in February 2004, and handed them to US forces. In subsequent statements to parliament, the government revealed that in March 2004, British officials had become aware of the US intention to transfer the men from Iraq to Afghanistan…

Iranian Revolution: Act II Continues
Reza Fiyouzat, Revolutionary Flowerpot Society
In solidarity with the Iranian university students! Salute to all the heroic students, every one of whom is a leader and a fighter! In unison with millions of students in Iran, we salute the freedom loving spirit of Shariat Razavi, Ghandchi and Bozorgnia! People in Iran continue their fight. The state trembles at every one of these anniversaries. As reported on Revolutionary Road, one bus passenger in Tehran could be heard commenting on the cowardice of the regime: “They’re afraid of their own shadows,” says the passenger while filming the battalions and battalions of different security agencies lining up the streets, in an ‘absolute show of force’. Alas, such is the double-edged sword they wield. The more they have to occupy the streets to maintain control, the more they are not in control…

All I want for Christmas is an end to apartheid – Top ten brands to boycott
Bay Area Campaign to End Israeli Apartheid
December 8, 2009 – While there are many Israeli and multinational companies that benefit from apartheid, we put together this list to highlight ten specific companies to target. Many of these produce goods in such a way that directly harms Palestinians — exploiting labor, developing technology for military operations, or supplying equipment for illegal settlements. Many are also the targets of boycotts for other reasons, like harming the environment and labor violations…

Action Call for anniversary of Israel’s massacres in Gaza
Free Gaza team
December 8, 2009 – December 27th-January 18th 2009-2010 marks the one-year anniversary of Israel’s brutal ‘Operation Cast Lead’ against the people of besieged Gaza. The 22-day attack left more than 1,400 dead, the vast majority of them civilians, including nearly 400 children, over 5000 injured, displaced 50,000 and made 20,000 homeless (until today). Some 3,600 homes were completely destroyed and 11,000 partially destroyed. Over 258 people died because Israeli forces prevented rescue services from reaching them. Most people were bombed to death, in or close to their homes, with over a third (519) cut down by Israeli Drones and a further 473 by jet planes…

December 8, 2009 – Eleven days after the Supreme Court in 2008 established a constitutional right for Guantanamo Bay detainees to challenge their captivity in U.S. courts, the Justices told the lawyer for an Afghan prisoner to go ahead with such a plea “in an appropriate district court.” The attorney for Abdul Hamid Salam Al-Ghizzawi did so. But now, exactly 17 months later, Al-Ghizzawi still awaits a District Court hearing, although he apparently has been cleared for release from Guantanamo. The Justices are now scheduled to consider next Friday what, if anything, to do, about his case…

How Israel Slipped the Snare of “Particular Concern” Through the State
Department Looking Glass
By KEVIN MINK
December 8, 2009 – Leave it to the State Department to soft-pedal religious extremism in the Middle East. Oh not in, say, Iran or Saudi Arabia. In the most recent edition of the department’s annual Report on International Religious Freedom, both are designated “Countries of Particular Concern,” members of a select group chastised for their extreme intolerance. Which is as it should be. But where is State’s acknowledgement of the happenings – from the absurd to the inhumane – in another, nearby country, where religious chauvinism has reached depths equaling those among any of its neighbors? I’m talking, of course, about the State of Israel – a place unfit, it seems, for any “particular concern” from Hillary & Co…

Malcom Lagauche
December 7, 2009 – As we approach the third anniversary of the murder of President Saddam Hussein by U.S. and Iranian-backed cowards, the current stooge prime minister of Iraq, Maliki, is sparing no effort in attempting to erase the memory of Saddam and the Ba’ath Party from Iraq’s collective remembrance. Most leaders who are killed in a coup or an invasion of a foreign country usually have their corpses paraded around for the people to throw things at, or they are buried in some junk heap in a landfill and forgotten. Crude oil politics in occupied Iraq
by Zafar Bangash
December 7, 2009 – The theft of Iraq’s oil by the West has picked up speed. In typical colonial style, the great robbery is being facilitated by former officials of the Bush administration that had served in Iraq. These include Jay Garner, first head of the US occupation administration in Iraq following the invasion. He is advisor to the Canadian company Vast Exploration, which has a 37% stake in an oilfield in the Kurdish north. Peter Galbraith, US foreign policy advisor close to Vice President Joe Biden and Senator John Kerry, advised the Kurds about their rights when the Iraqi constitution was being drafted. He pushed through provisions that granted Kurds exclusive rights over oil and gas, of which he is now the principal beneficiary…

December 7, 2009 – In the media coverage of Barack Obama’s decision to escalate the war in Afghanistan, one question goes unasked and unanswered: how many thousands, tens of thousands, even hundreds of thousands of Afghan civilians will die as a result of US military aggression? The dispatch of an additional 30,000 US troops, reinforced by at least 7,000 more from other NATO countries, means a colossal increase in the level of violence. Pearl Harbour as Japanese blowback
The United States, its abandonment of law and worse
By Christopher King
December 7, 2009 – American behaviour extends beyond inhumanity into viciousness. The character of Barack Obama, which in dealing with non-Americans is no different from that of George W. Bush, also shows the American characteristic of cruelty without limits. It is said that the Afghan surge is Obama’s defining action, which is probably true politically. He revealed himself much earlier however, in April, at the time the Maersk Alabama’s captain was held by three teenaged pirates. The pirates were in a boat tied to a US warship and were attempting to negotiate for their lives. The captain was in no more danger than he had been for days but Obama approved killing the men who held him. It was not a firefight. It was cold-blooded murder by trained snipers – hailed in the American media as heroism. That defined Obama as I said at the time. His approval of the Afghanistan surge was inevitable…

The Shame and Folly of Obama’s Afghan War
By Dave Lindorff
December 7, 2009b- There are so many things wrong with Obama’s “New and Improved” Afghanistan War that it’s hard to know where to begin, but I guess the place to start is with his premise. If America needs to be fighting in Afghanistan because Al Qaeda planned and launched the 9-11 attacks from there back in 2001, as the president claimed in his lackluster address to the cadets at West Point last week, then we would have to assume either that Al Qaeda is still there, or that if we were not there fighting, that Al Qaeda would be back to plan more attacks. Well, we know Al Qaeda is not there, because US intelligence reports that there are “fewer than 100" Al Qaeda operatives in Afghanistan at most at this point, and probably a good deal fewer. Maybe even zero…
