Honduran Elections Marred by Police Violence, Censorship, International Non-Recognition, CEPR Co-Director Says
Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR)
November 30, 2009 – Elections conducted in a climate of fear, human rights violations, and international non-recognition won’t resolve the political crisis in Honduras, said Mark Weisbrot, Co-Director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research. “Only a few governments that the U.S. State Department can heavily influence will recognize these elections,” said Weisbrot. “The rest of the world recognizes that you cannot carry out free or fair elections under a dictatorship that has overthrown the elected President by force and used violence, repression, and media censorship against political opponents for the entire campaign period leading up the vote, including election day.”…

Claims Iraqi forces broke the Geneva Convention will be examined by Spanish court
Times-Series
November 30, 2009 – RELATIVES of Iranian refugees who they claim were tortured and killed by the Iraqi authorities in a refugee camp have been celebrating today after hearing that a Spanish court has decided to take on the case. The Central Investigative Court of Spain has agreed it will look at complaints filed by families of residents in Camp Ashraf in Iraq against the Iraqi authorities. The relatives blame them for a series of attacks on July 28 and 29 at the camp which led to the deaths of 11 residents and the injury of hundreds more…

OBAMA DOES A LOUIS XVI
Eric S. Margolis
November 30, 2009 – American would not have won independence from Great Britain without generous military and financial support from France and its monarch, Louis XVI. But France spent itself into bankruptcy supporting the American colonists. France’s financial ruin was a major cause of the ensuing French Revolution that cost the unfortunate Louis his head. Wars are hugely expensive. Money plays as great a role in them as soldiers and weapons… As the Obama administration appears set to escalate the war in Afghanistan, the real costs of Afghanistan and Iraq are still being concealed from the public and Congress. A billion here; a billion there; suddenly, we are taking about real money. The $200 billion annual cost for both wars is only a part of the growing expenses faced by Washington. The annual bill for US intelligence, which employs over 200,000 people, has doubled to $75 billion, in large part to support foreign wars and operations against anti-US Muslim groups…

Iraqi refugees: Women on the margins
Refugees International (RI)
November 30, 2009 – Many Iraqi women refugees, sheltered temporarily in Syria, bear the scars and trauma of extreme violence suffered in their homeland. Ethnic and religious-based persecution tore apart previously stable communities in Iraq, removing these women and their children from their traditional support systems. Stripped of the normal protections of home and extended family life they exist on the margins of society. Refugee widows and single women without the support and protection of male relatives face substantial psychological and physical risk…

Tales from Gitmo: The Guantanamo Lawyers
By Kashmir Hill
November 30, 2009 – President Obama recently announced that Guantanamo Bay will not be closing in January – reneging on a promise he had made to close the detention center within a year of his taking office. This did not come as a surprise to the many lawyers who have provided counsel to the detainees in Cuba. At a panel discussion about the Guantanamo lawyers, Ramzi Kassem — a City University of New York law professor representing one of the current detainees – said: “What matters more than when [the closing] happens is what happens to the [200] men still there.”…

Palestinians organize for the Gaza Freedom March
Rami Almeghari, The Electronic Intifada
November 30, 2009 – “From the besieged Gaza Strip, we call upon all peace lovers around the globe to come here to participate in our Gaza Freedom March that is aimed at breaking a repressive Israeli blockade on Gaza’s 1.5 million residents.” So said Mustafa al-Kayali, coordinator of the steering committee for the Gaza Freedom March. The march is scheduled to depart by 31 December from Izbet Abed Rabbo, an area devastated during last winter’s Israeli assault, and head towards Erez, the crossing point to Israel at the northern end of the Gaza Strip…

Tour the Palestinian archipelago
Yaniv Reich
November 30, 2009 – When an image of the West Bank map is invoked, the map that typically comes to mind is the broad double-hump of the Green Line-defined area. This is most people’s reference map: the implicit, assumptive spatial unit that orients prototypical thinking about Israel, Palestine, partition, and two states. If this is your mental map, then partition becomes for you a simple matter of redrawing the the Green Line, with a little squiggly flourish into the West Bank here and a compensatory doodle delving into currently Israeli land. In 2009, however, this map is a historical fiction, which has been purposefully and continually destroyed since the West Bank came under Israeli military rule in 1967. Whole towns were built directly on top of the line (like Modi’in). Massive suburbs were built by every single Israeli government since then, whether Labor or Likud-led…

Revised Iraqi election law alienates Sunni minority
By James Cogan
November 30 2009 – Changes made last Monday to Iraq’s election law have inflamed the sectarian and ethnic animosities fomented by the US occupation since the 2003 invasion. The dominant Shiite-based and Kurdish nationalist parties used their majority in the parliament to ram through legislation that increases the number of seats in areas they expect to win, at the expense of those with a majority Sunni population. The original legislation was passed on November 8, after months of delay and intense pressure from Washington on the various Iraqi factions to reach an agreement…

A “Necessary War” — for a Gas Pipeline
It’s Obama’s War Now
By GARY LEUPP
November 30, 2009 – There are now at present some 68,000 U.S. troops and 42,000 allied forces occupying Afghanistan, in league with the Northern Alliance warlords and the corrupt and feeble Karzai regime in Kabul. President Obama clearly wishes to increase the figure and will announce before an audience of West Point cadets Tuesday that he will add over 30,000 more while pushing the Europeans to add 10,000. This will bring the total number of occupation forces to around the level of the Soviet deployment at its peak in the 1980s… Because make no mistake about it, this is Barack Obama’s war now. With this announcement he will have personally increased the force in Afghanistan by over 50,000 troops in response to appeals from his generals. Obama’s mantra about the conflict in Afghanistan is that it is a “war of necessity.” But this is really just a version of the neocon “War on Terror” trope…

German government crisis over Kunduz massacre
By Ulrich Rippert
November 30, 2009 – Former Defence Minister Franz Josef Jung (Christian Democratic Union, CDU) resigned at the end of last week from his present government post as employment minister. He has thereby paid the price for the lies used to hush up the Kunduz massacre at the beginning of September in which up to 142 people lost their lives, including numerous civilians. Also dismissed the previous day for the same reason were General Inspector Wolfgang Schneiderhan, the most senior military figure, and State Secretary Peter Wichert…

Video: Taliban claims French bribery ploy
Aljazeera.net
November 30, 2009 – French troops deployed in Afghanistan are attempting to bribe Taliban fighters not to attack them, a senior Taliban leader has told Al Jazeera. In an exclusive interview, Saif-Allah Jalili, the Taliban commander of the Kabul district, said on Monday that his men have been offered gifts and money by the French soldiers in order to persuade the fighters not to engage their forces. “The French in Sorubi [in Nangarhar province in eastern Afghanistan] tried to send gifts to Taliban fighters and offered them a lot of money in return for not launching attacks targeting the French troops,” Jalili said. “But Taliban fighters replied by rejecting everything and by strongly demanding the departure of the French troops and all other troops from our country, which they invaded by force,” he said…

Zionism – more than traditional colonialism and apartheid
Lasse Wilhelmson
November 30, 2009 -…Israel is not only a traditional colonial State with apartheid and racism, but also a Western imperialist fortress in The Orient. Zionism also means expansion and ethnic cleansing. Furthermore, it is an elitist ideology. It grows politically and religiously amongst the broad masses of people and is thereby strengthened. Religious totalitarianism is its ideological base with strong links to National Socialism and Fascism. The brutal violence, the intransigence and the dehumanisation of the Palestinians can only be understood against this background. Against this background, the genocide of the Palestinians is possible and consistent. It is the background against which Israel is a “time bomb” in the Middle East policies of the US. It is high time Zionism and its Jewish State was replaced by a secular parliamentary democracy with equal rights for all citizens regardless of ethnic or religious beliefs. The grounds for a system of apartheid and the occupation of the West Bank and Gaza would thereby disappear…

Dear Mr President allow me to curse today
Iqbal Tamimi
November 30, 2009 – Do you remember the ill-fated Palestinian refugees who were living in the desert at AlRowaished Camp on the Jordanian – Iraqi borders? Those are the same people the Brazilian government promised in 2007 to offer them refuge and save their lives. Guess what? They arrived in Brazil and found out that all the promises evaporated in thin air, including the UN’s who promised them a dignified life, education for their children, and medical care, but none of those promises were met. Since then the refugees who were pulled from a hole and placed in a crater are protesting because no one wants to hear their agony. The UN told them if they do not like where they are they can go back to the Tanf Camp in the desert or to Iraq. Those same Palestinian refugees who God only knows how many times they became refugees since the Zionist state drove them away out of their homeland said that living in the desert is more merciful than staying in Brazil with no help or protection, some were attacked, faced robberies and crimes, but no one offered to help them or their children…

WE HAVE ONLY GOD
by Flora Nicoletta
November 30, 2009 – In Gaza City I have seen 1948 in 2009. The same images: the images of the Nakba, the Palestinian catastrophe. But now they were moving. It was not a film. It was not theater. It was real. On Saturday 27 December 2008, at precisely 11:25, Israeli Occupation Forces launched a ferocious offensive against the Gaza Strip by air first, and then by sea and ground. Some days later, on Wednesday 7 January, near Al-Shifa hospital, I met my friend Rami Al-Sultan: “Come to see my people… Come to see them in the UNRWA schools… They are fleeing their homes because Israel bombards the area.” We continued to walk in Al-Shifa Street (officially Izzeddin Al-Qassam St.) and reached the compound of UNRWA schools. We stopped at the first entrance…

Any given Friday
Jo Ehrlich writing from occupied West Bank
November 30, 2009 – Today we were clearing land in the Palestinian village of Um Salomona and it is a beautiful crisp, clear fall day. Um Salomona is located in the occupied West Bank’s Bethlehem District and is one of nine villages, with a combined total of 9,000 residents, that borders the illegal Israeli settlement of Efrat. More accurately, Efrat borders the nine Palestinian villages, seeing as they outdate the illegal settlement by hundreds of years. Efrat is the largest part of the Gush Etzion settlement bloc and is the fourth-largest settlement in the occupied West Bank with some 9,000 Israeli settlers. Israel plans for its wall in the West Bank to tuck Efrat comfortably into Israel. A road for settlers which Palestinians are only allowed to use during daylight hours has already been built and cuts Palestinian residents off from their farmland…

Another toothless Iraq inquiry
It can only confirm what most people already know: this was a war deliberately waged under a string of false pretences
By Linda S. Heard, Special to Gulf News
November 30, 2009 – Britain’s third inquiry into the 2003 invasion of Iraq is underway. The previous Hutton and Butler reports were written off as establishment whitewashes with main government players emerging as pristine as snow. However, the current review chaired by John Chilcot — a Privy Counsellor who has been described as “a Mandarin with a safe pair of hands” — is empowered to lay blame at the feet of government bodies and individuals. But that’s as far as it goes. The published outcome could embarrass the potentially culpable but they certainly won’t have to peer out of their living room windows waiting for the police to come a-knocking. It seems, therefore, that if someone were to be pinpointed as having helped cook up a case for war as a result of a previous done deal between George W. Bush and Tony Blair, that individual would get off scot-free. Never mind that up to a million Iraqis are dead as a result of that illegal invasion, along with thousands of coalition troops. Why hold an inquiry at all when all it’s good for is academic interest or a sop to the angry families of fallen servicemen?…

Will the Church act to save the children of Gaza this Christmas?
OPEN LETTER to The Most Rev. and the Rt. Hon. the Archbishop of Canterbury, Spiritual leader of the Anglican Church
Stuart Littlewood
Dear Archbishop, Two years ago, on returning from Gaza and the West Bank, I wrote about the dire conditions and the British government’s complicity in the crippling blockade, and reminded prime minister Gordon Brown that Gaza was formerly entrusted to Britain under mandate, which was reason for us to feel a special responsibility. I urged him: “Go see for yourselves the misery, the human tragedy and the devastation you have heaped on these nice people. Feel the pain and weep. “Then amaze us. Do something courageous for once. Lift the cruel siege. End the 90 years of betrayal that has so shamed Britain.” That was before the horrific blitzkrieg launched by Israel last December/January, in which at least 350 children were murdered and thousands more maimed or made homeless…

Iraq inquiry: Tony Blair asked for war plans to be prepared in June 2002
By Gordon Rayner
November 30, 2009 – Sir David said the former prime minister asked defence chiefs to prepare a list of options for military support of a US-led invasion after being told President Bush had set up a “cell” dedicated to planning for a war. Sir David also disclosed that President Bush and Mr Blair first discussed a possible link between Saddam and the 2001 terrorist attacks on the US just three days after 9/11. Asked when Britain first decided to take part in military action, Sir David said: “The first time the Prime Minister asked for military options was in June 2002…

Hamas: Gaps remain over prisoner swap with Israel
By MOHAMMED DARAGHMEH (AP)
November 30, 2009 — Senior Hamas officials said Monday that the Islamic militant group is still sparring with Israel over the names of 50 prisoners it wants released in exchange for a captive Israeli soldier, signaling there were still significant gaps before completing the anticipated deal. Last week, Israeli and Hamas officials spoke of progress, raising speculation that an agreement could be wrapped up within days. Hamas is demanding some 1,000 prisoners in exchange for an Israeli soldier it has held for more than three years. But Hamas officials said Israel is still balking at including prominent political leaders and top Hamas militants it holds…

More Arrests in America’s War on Islam
by Stephen Lendman
November 30, 2009 – A November 24 “hatemail” underscores the issue, titled “Muslims in America – violent clashing of cultures, basic incompatibility of Western thought and Muslim theocracy,” then quoting Denver radio talk show host Peter Boyles (know.com) saying: “Not all Muslims are terrorists, but all terrorists are Muslims.” Not Jews, not Christians, not Hindus, not Buddhists, or persons from any of the lesser known religions, just Muslims with no understanding that Islam teaches love, not hate; peace, not violence; charity, not selfishness; and tolerance, not terrorism; or that Islam, Christianity and Judaism have common roots…

‘Arab women need not apply’
Jonathan Cook
November 30, 2009 – Israel’s finance minister was accused last week of trying to deflect attention from discriminatory policies keeping many of the country’s Arab families in poverty by blaming their economic troubles on what he described as Arab society’s opposition to women working. A recent report from Israel’s National Insurance Institute showed that half of all Arab families in Israel are classified as poor compared with just 14 per cent of Jewish families. Yuval Steinitz, the finance minister, told a conference on employment discrimination this month that the failure of Arab women to participate in the workforce was damaging Israel’s economy. Eighteen per cent of Arab women work, and only half of them full time, compared with at least 55 per cent of Jewish women…

Israeli intel agency defends interrogation methods
Ma’an News
November 30, 2009 – Responding to a petition to Israel’s Supreme Court, the Shin Bet intelligence agency on Monday insisted its interrogation practices are humane. The Public Committee Against Torture had petitioned the court to stop handcuffing Palestinian detainees during interrogation, considering the practice a form of torture. According to the Shin Bet, however, Palestinian prisoners are handcuffed during investigation to avoid attacks on interrogators and to avoid escape attempts, the Hebrew-language daily Ma’ariv reported. The newspaper reported that detainees are typically tied to a chair for long hours with their hands cuffed behind them during interrogations…

We are all Palestinians now
Maidhc Ó Cathail
November 30, 2009 – Comparisons are said to be invidious, but in the right hands they can be very illuminating. The toxic dust from the economic 9/11 of 2008 hadn’t even begun to settle when a perceptive observer noticed an important connection to the geopolitical fallout from the more dramatic 9/11 seven years earlier. On September 16, Gilad Atzmon, an Israeli expatriate, told the Cambridge Forum: “As the picture of the current economic disaster becomes ever more clear, it becomes rather obvious, to me at least, that the ideology and the people who are directly responsible for the mass killing of millions of Iraqis and the displacement of many other millions, the people who keep the Palestinians starved behind walls, are unfortunately very much the same people who are responsible for a class genocide of millions of disenfranchised Americans who are now on the brink of total dispossession.” …

ACLU: Supreme Court decision won’t end torture photos fight
By Daniel Tencer

One Palestinian Prisoner Could Change the Balance
Analysis by Jerrold Kessel and Pierre Klochendler
November 30, 2009 – …Back in July 2000, just weeks before the outbreak of the second Palestinian Intifadah, Barghouti, speaking in his modest Ramallah office, laid out his alternative strategy for ending the Occupation: “We will take our people onto the ‘67 lines and proclaim from there that we’re simply defending our borders against the Israeli occupation – no arms, no stones even, just our bodies,” he told us. Barghouti is seen by many Palestinians as the optimal leader to take them towards their future state should Mahmoud Abbas indeed decide to step down, as he has threatened to do. Barghouti, 50, is considered the true heir of former Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, precisely perhaps because he too courts ambiguity. His assertive approach has regularly elevated him to the top of polls of whom Palestinians would like to lead them against Israel – both in negotiations to end the occupation and in resisting the continuing occupation…

November 30, 2009 — A rogue Afghan police officer opened fire at a checkpoint in southwest Afghanistan, killing six police officers and injuring two before being killed, an official said Monday. The incident — the second time in two months that a police officer has turned on colleagues — is a reminder of the steep challenge NATO troops face as they work to build a national police force that will be able to provide security and allow international forces to eventually leave.
