Holocaust Holidays in the USA
June Terpstra, Ph.D.
November 26, 2009 – Did you ever notice how most major USA holidays celebrate genocides and holocausts? The first official Thanksgiving Day celebrated the massacre of native American men, women and children during one of their religious ceremonies. “Gathered in this place of meeting, they were attacked by mercenaries and English and Dutch. The Indians were ordered from the building and as they came forth were shot down, The rest were burned alive in the building——-The very next day the governor declared a Thanksgiving Day…For the next 100 years, every Thanksgiving Day ordained by a Governor was in honor of the bloody victory, thanking God that the battle had been won.” (Professor Newell) Then there is Columbus Day. He was a terrorist according to today’s definition. Las Casas, a priest traveling with Columbus tells how the Spaniards in the Caribbean “grew more conceited every day” … They “rode the backs of Indians if they were in a hurry” or were carried on hammocks by Indians running in relays…

A People’s History of Thanksgiving
By Ramzy Baroud
November 26, 2009 – This week Americans will observe “Thanksgiving” commemorating a romanticized era in their nations record, celebrating the supposed solidarity and brotherhood enjoyed by the first settlers and the indigenous people of what is now called the United States. However, this fantastic tale of friendship contradicts the candid remarks of many notable personalities in US history. Few can be as blunt regarding the legacy of the United States toward the native people of this land as the 26th President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt. In his narrative, “The Winning of the West,” Roosevelt spoke about the “spread of the English-speaking peoples over the world’s wasted spaces.” He wrote: “The European settlers moved into an uninhabited waste…the land is really owned by no one… The settler ousts no one from the land. The truth is, the Indians never had any real title to the soil.” In an interview with the British Sunday Times, on June 15, 1969, former Israeli Prime Minister, Golda Meir made similar claims, stating, “There was no such thing as Palestinians. It was not as though there was a Palestinian people in Palestine considering itself as a Palestinian people and we came and threw them out and took their country from them. They did not exist.”…

Children in Occupied Gaza, living in Containers as Israeli siege continues
Noor El Swirk
November 26, 2009 – A tent, a container, and a lot of wood suspended in the air by a metal column: who can imagine this as a home? Nobody. And before the Gaza War, neither could Om Ramadan. When I visited her, she was washing her family’s clothes, but she couldn’t find a place to dry them, so she hung them over the metal stairs her husband had made, so they could reach their home. “I was living here with my husband,” she said. “It was an eight-storey building. But on the fourth day of the war we lost everything, and more than thirty people become homeless.”…

Gaza: one year later, young fisherman still trying to heal
Eva Bartlett
November 26, 2009 – Just as his leg was healing from a gaping bullet wound in his calf, Mohammed Musleh broke it, setting his healing back. Although the re-break happened in April, now in November his leg is still in metal braces. Musleh was initially wounded early in the morning of 5 October 2008 when Israeli soldiers shot at him from a distance of 100 metres. “Doctors told me there was an entry wound of two square centimetres and an exit wound of 10-15 square centimetres. They said the shot fractured my shinbone and severed arteries in my leg,” Musleh testified to B’Tselem, the Israeli human rights group. At the time of his shooting, Musleh and Ahmad al-Bardawil were fishing 2 km off the coast of Rafah, 3 km from the Egyptian border, according to their GPS device…

Blair ‘signed in blood’ support for Iraq war at Bush’s Texas ranch, ex-envoy says
Nico Hines
November 26, 2009 – Tony Blair’s meeting with President Bush at his Texas ranch in 2002 was probably the turning point when the Prime Minister ‘signed in blood’ Britain’s support for the Iraq war, it was claimed today. Sir Christopher Meyer, then British Ambassador to the US, told the Iraq Inquiry that Mr Blair would have been more influential if he had attached pre-conditions to British support at the Crawford ranch meeting – which was six months before Hans Blix began looking for weapons in Iraq. “I think that would have changed the nature of American planning,” he said. “By the time you get to the end of the year it’s too late. . . I did say to London that we’re being taken for granted…

Saudi Arabia and Iran Face Off in Yemen
Frida Ghitis
November 26, 2009 – Relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran have ranged over the years from coolly cordial to openly hostile. After all, the two countries see themselves as rivals in the quest for regional influence and for leadership of the Muslim world. They have very different histories and conflicting political ideologies, and they stand on opposing sides of the Shiite-Sunni divide. In recent months, strains in the relationship have greatly intensified. Today, the differences between Tehran and Riyadh have brought the neighbors dangerously close to open confrontation…

Iran seizes Nobel winner Shirin Edabi’s medal
Martin Fletcher
November 26, 2009 Iran’s regime has confiscated the Nobel peace medal and diploma of Shirin Ebadi, the human rights lawyer who is one of its most potent and outspoken critics. Her bank account has also been frozen on the pretext that she owes $410,000 in tax. The seizure of the award, unprecedented in its108-year-old history, caused outrage in Olso where the Nobel peace committee is based. The Norwegian Government summoned the Iranian envoy to protest, and the committee said it too would be registering a formal complaint. “Such an act leaves us feeling shock and disbelief,” said Jonas Gahr Stoere, Norway’s Foreign Minister…

Israeli military confiscates electricity pylons; Palestinians prohibited from improving quality of life
International Solidarity Movement (ISM)
November 26, 2009 – At-Tuwani, South Hebron hills – On Wednesday, 25 November, the Israeli military and police removed and confiscated two standing electricity pylons from the village of At-Tuwani. The electricity pylons had been installed by the villagers of At-Tuwani in an effort to connect to the electrical grid in Yatta, a Palestinian city to the north. The Israeli military declared the area around the pylons a closed military zone in an attempt to prevent Palestinians and international activists from obstructing or documenting the confiscation. Nonetheless, dozens of villagers came out in protest, and barricaded a police jeep from entering the village.

Israeli forces racially profile, deny entry to former Black Panther leader from US
Saed Bannoura
November 26, 2009 – Dhoruba bin Wahad was a political prisoner in the US for 19 years – 7 of those years in solitary confinement. In 1990, he was cleared of all charges when a New York judge found that US Federal agents had fabricated evidence against him as part of the Counter-Intelligence Program, or Cointelpro, created by the US government to systematically attack and destroy movements for black, Latino and Native American Liberation. Today, bin Wahad is in Amman, Jordan after Israeli authorities denied him entry into the West Bank earlier this week..

Iraq inquiry’s game-changing evidence
Sir Christopher Meyer’s evidence has surely made it impossible to claim that Iraq was about WMD and not regime change
Chris Ames
November 26, 2009 – At the Iraq inquiry this morning, Sir Christopher Meyer has let so many cats out of the bag that it is hard to keep up with them all. He has confirmed that by the time Tony Blair met George Bush at Crawford, Texas in April 2002, Blair had already agreed to regime change. Meyer and others had told the US administration about this change of heart in March 2002. The “UN route” was a way to justify the war but the inspectors were never given the chance to do their job. Or did we know all that already? Ever since the war, there has been a massive gulf between what various leaked documents have shown and the official version. Previous inquiries have failed to close that gap. Now Meyer, who was the UK ambassador to Washington at the time, has done exactly that…

Thanksgiving: A Time to Imagine
Frank Joseph Smecker
November 26, 2009 – Imagine if aliens from a galaxy light-years from Earth, decide to seek out a New World. Imagine they discover Earth, it’s the New World, they assume. And they pursue a relentless campaign of occupation, colonizing the planet. One by one, these aliens systematically remove, with much violent force, the people of the planet, starting with the First World dominant culture, because, of course, they’ll want what that culture has: access to the land and resources which that culture controls. Imagine these aliens succeed with such a crusade, centuries later marking the genocide with an annual feast celebrating a deluded history that claims they were embraced with much alacrity and congeniality, that, while they were killing off human beings to clear the way for their own culture, human beings weren’t fighting back but teaching them how to make mashed potatoes and gravy and pies and roast turkey and things…

Thanksgiving Day Celebrates A Massacre
Research compiled, October 19, 1990 by Johyn Westcott and Paul Apidaca
November 26, 2009 – William B. Newell, a Penobscot Indian and former chairman of the Anthropology department at the University of Connecticut, says that the first official Thanksgiving Day celebrated the massacre of 700 Indian men, women and children during one of their religious ceremonies. “Thanksgiving Day” was first proclaimed by the Governor of the then Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1637 to commemorate the massacre of 700 men, women and children who were celebrating their annual Green Corn Dance…Thanksgiving Day to the, “in their own house”, Newell stated…

Where next for Palestinians?
by Ghada Karmi
November 26, 2009 – Palestinian history is at one of its most serious and important junctures. The peace negotiations that commenced with the Oslo accords in 1993 are at an end. Even hardened devotees of the peace process with Israel have now given up and are adopting positions that threaten to disrupt the cozy status quo of the “peace process”. The Palestinian president’s announcement that he will not seek re-election, and the recent demand for UN recognition of a Palestine state on the 1967 territories are examples of this trend. It has become impossible for even the most pliant Palestinian leadership to ignore Israel’s strategy of “talking and taking”, its relentless colonization of the occupied territories, which doubled after the Oslo agreement and is ever more blatant and aggressive. The Palestinian maneuver, taking advantage of an assumed US frustration with Israeli intransigence on settlement building, is clearly designed to challenge the international community out of its inertia…

British documents detail US and UK plans for Iraq war
By Julie Hyland
November 26, 2009 – Documents obtained by the Sunday Telegraph provide further proof of the criminal character of the US-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003. They confirm that then-Prime Minister Tony Blair lied to the British public when he repeatedly denied that he and US President George W. Bush had agreed on war months before the invasion in order to effect “regime change.” The Sunday Telegraph reported that it had received “hundreds of pages of secret Government reports,” some of which it has published on its website. The newspaper cited Blair’s statement to parliament on July 16, 2002, in response to speculation about British involvement in an attack on Iraq…

For Gaza’s homeless, holiday is time for despair
By Tom Perry
November 26, 2009 – In the days leading up to Eid al-Adha, Zaid Khadar would usually be buying new clothes for his children and stocking up on traditional foods to celebrate one of the most important dates on the Muslim calendar. Instead, he struggles to shield them from the winter rain dripping through the roof of the shelter that has housed his family since they were made homeless by Israel’s three-week offensive in the Gaza Strip almost a year ago. “My children are saying: ‘Why aren’t you bringing us clothes? Why don’t you get a sheep to slaughter?’” said Khadar… “The governments do not take care of us: neither the Hamas government, nor the Ramallah government. The same goes for the Muslim world. Shame on them,” he said. “Give me work so I can feed my children. Is it fair that your children can celebrate Eid and mine can’t?”…

Palestinian woman suffers a stroke after settlers invade her family’s house in Sheikh Jarrah
International Solidarity Movement (ISM)
26 November 2009 – On Thursday, November 26, 2009 at 1:00am, five settlers and settler security, who are currently occupying the Gawi family house in Sheikh Jarrah, attempted to take over a section of a house belonging to the Palestinian al-Kurd family. The Israeli police were alerted immediately, however, before they managed to arrive, the settlers started attacking the Palestinians living in the house. One settler violently pushed a member of the al-Kurd family, Maysa, against a wall and thereafter grabbed her son, Munjad, by the lapel. After their arrival and a long discussion with the al-Kurd family concerning the legal status of the house, the Israeli police reluctantly escorted the settlers out…

The Paucity of Hope
By Yousef Munayyer
November 26, 2009 – …Things could not seem worse during the Bush administration for the Palestinians, so Obama was an improvement before his first day in office. Many Palestinians felt President Obama would carry out an evenhanded policy for the first time. His lofty and populist rhetoric during the campaign resonated with a people long trying to appeal to a sense of international equality and justice. Despite failed peace efforts and a heinous attack on an already suffocated Gaza, many still remained hopeful. However, the only real change taking place since Obama’s election is Israel’s continued illegal geographic expansion in the West Bank and increased defiance of international law…

PA: Netanyahu deceiving world with building freeze
Ali Waked, Ynet
November 26, 2009 – A Palestinian Authority official said Thursday that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s announcement on a 10-month settlement construction freeze were a show and manipulation aimed at deceiving the international community. Yasser Abed Rabbo, secretary-general of the Palestinian Liberation Organization’s Executive Committee, told a press conference in Ramallah that there was nothing new in Netanyahu’s statement. “It was a political manipulation aimed at bypassing the international stand which rejects the settlements and supports the establishment of a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders.”…
