Israeli racism in theory and practice
By Zulaikha Abdullah
November 23, 2009 – In recent years, and particularly since the carnage wrought in its offensive on Gaza, Zionist Israel’s discriminatory practices and treatment of Palestinians has become subject to increasing scrutiny and criticism by the international community, human rights and humanitarian organizations all reflecting a growing world-wide consensus and repulsion. Israel as a military occupation that implements racist policies against the non-Jewish populations both inside its borders and within the territories it occupies acts in flagrant breach of numerous UN resolutions and is condemned by various international conventions against racism. Yet, meaningful public debate of this pressing issue remains taboo and its very existence is generally ignored…

Blackwater’s Secret War in Pakistan
by Jeremy Scahill
November 23, 2009 – At a covert forward operating base run by the US Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) in the Pakistani port city of Karachi, members of an elite division of Blackwater are at the center of a secret program in which they plan targeted assassinations of suspected Taliban and Al Qaeda operatives, “snatch and grabs” of high-value targets and other sensitive action inside and outside Pakistan, an investigation by The Nation has found. The Blackwater operatives also assist in gathering intelligence and help run a secret US military drone bombing campaign that runs parallel to the well-documented CIA predator strikes, according to a well-placed source within the US military intelligence apparatus…

Sexual abuse of Afghan children decried by UN
More than one in five children born in Afghanistan dies before the age of five, according to UNICEF
November 23, 2009 – Children in Afghanistan are suffering from serious child abuse and high levels of mortality. United Nations officials, speaking in Kabul, have said children are being deprived in the worst possible ways with their rights being neglected despite vast flow of Western aid into the country. The Kabul news conference, marking the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, was told Afghanistan has the highest infant mortality rate in the world; thirty per cent of children are involved in child labour; forty-three per cent of girls are married under age…

Palestinian Children Face Daily Settler Attacks Getting to School
By Mel Frykberg
November 23, 2009 – Being able to travel to school in relative safety is something children all over the world take for granted. But, for Palestinian children living in the shadow of the ubiquitous and illegal Israeli settlements dotting the West Bank, simply walking to school can be a terrifying experience. “It is really scary walking to school. We never know when the settlers will attack us and beat us,” says Rima Ali, 10, from the village of Tuba in the southern West Bank, about two hours drive south of Jerusalem. “Every day we have to watch out that the settlers are not in the valley ahead of us and if we see them we run away,” Ali told IPS…

Killing Hope
Hussein Al-alak, The Iraq Solidarity Campaign
…During the early 1990’s, in a television interview, one former member of the US military stated in a British TV show, that “one Iraqi life is not worth ten American lives” in reference to the Basra Road Massacre, with this mantra proving itself to be still alive and kicking but in the regime of Nouri Al-Maliki, who only through the protection of US troops inside of the Green Zone, is able to pass the death sentence and the only crime these 1,126 people are guilty of committing, is that they once worked as civil servents for the government of Saddam Hussein. What is interesting here, is the fact that the usual suspects in the West have not yet had the courage to find any outrage, in what is being planned to take place on the third anniversary of Saddams murder, at the hands of a regime, which is being shakily lead by a man, whose ties are closer to that of Tehran than even the United States itself…

USA Sets Up Death Squads In Afghanistan
RedBedHead
November 23, 2009 – IN POLITE COMPANY THEY DON’T CALL THEM DEATH SQUADS, instead they are euphemistically labelled “anti-Taliban militias”. And the USA is pouring millions into the secretive program – the details of which they aren’t even revealing to their allies. But we’ve seen this counter-insurgency strategy many times before. The Americans used it in Nicaragua where they trained and armed Contras to fight against the leftist Sandinista government. Even earlier they used this strategy in Angola, funding the vicious UNITA army of Joseph Savimbi. And, of course, they used it in Iraq as part of their divide on conquer strategy by stoking up a near civil war between Sunni and Shia militias, then co-opting the Sunnis into the Awakening movement to crush Al Qaeda, then turning on them – or allowing the Shiite-led government to turn on them. In every case it has meant the most horrendous escalation of violence as village is turned against village, neighbour against neighbour…

Tame the Israel lobby with the Seven Principles of Public Life
Stuart Littlewood
November 23, 2009 – The recent Channel 4 TV Dispatches programme, which probed the antics of the pro-Israel lobby in British politics, has opened up this hitherto forbidden subject to public debate. Basic questions now need answering – for example, why are agents of a foreign military power allowed to meddle in our democratic and parliamentary processes? That was the concern of a group of citizens nearly two years ago. They decided to press the Committee on Standards in Public Life to examine whether there was undue Israeli influence at the heart of British government. The Standards Committee, chaired by newly-appointed Sir Christopher Kelly (the same Kelly who is currently making heavy weather of investigating the way MPs have been fiddling expenses), refused to look into it…

Odds, and One Regrettable Usual End
Arthur Silber
November 23, 2009 – …And I would have thought that one of the very probable results of a trial of the 9/11 co-conspirators — that the appellate process finally “will provide a blueprint for the government, giving them the prize they’ve been after all this time—a legal way both to torture and to prosecute” (in David Feige’s words) — would easily have been recognized by more than a few people as a signal moment in the debasement and corruption of our political-judicial system…

PA: UN wants Israel to admit secret prison
Ma’an News
November 23, 2009 – – The UN has sent an official request to Israel to admit the existence of secret prison camp 1391, dubbed in the press “Israel’s Guantanamo Bay,” according to the Palestinian Authority minister of prisoners affairs. Minister Issa Qaraqe told a news conference in Ramallah on Saturday that the UN had asked the Israeli government in a letter to officially acknowledge that the facility. Human rights experts with the United Nations Committee Against Torture questioned Israeli officials about the facility in may when the country came up for a regular review under a treaty obligation, Reuters reported.—

LET’S CALL IT WHAT IT IS~ THE QUIET GENOCIDE
Irish4Palestine
November 23, 2009 – What is happening in Palestine is nothing short of a planned “Quiet Genocide.” Yes, “Genocide” the taboo word, unable to be uttered by the American Government, the British Government or any of the world’s major Western Players or European heavyweights. Whilst the majority of the world’s governments choose to play word games and run interference for Israel’s crimes, I thought it was time to look at just exactly what a “genocide” is, how to create one, how to make it successful, how to win. And, surprisingly enough, the International Law on Genocide was created after World War 2 at the behest of a Jewish Lawyer called Lemkin. Oddly enough, Lemkin’s work on Genocide, his mapping out of what a genocide is comprised of, how it is done, the various aspects of types of genocides, he unwittingly handed the future State of Israel a blueprint if you will, a “How To List” on committing successful genocide…

Gaza: moving on, until the next massacre
Eva Bartlett
November 23, 2009 – Three years after the murder of seventeen from the Athemna family –among them fourteen women and children, including an infant –and one from the Kaferna family, the pain has little receded for the Athamnah family survivors. When Desmond Tutu visited the region a year and a half after the attack [coming from Rafah after being prevented entry by Israeli authorities], he aptly described the 8 November 2006 Israeli shelling of the family sleeping in their homes as a ‘massacre’. This particular massacre came just a day after the Israeli army had pulled out of Gaza, following their 6 day-long invasion dubbed “Autumn Clouds” (in line with the sadistic tradition of naming their attacks, like the “Summer Rains” attacks just months earlier, killing 300 civilians) which killed at least 50 people…

Former Soviet States: Battleground For Global Domination
by Rick Rozoff
November 23, 2009 – As the United States escalates its joint war with NATO in Afghanistan and across the Pakistani border, expands military deployments and exercises throughout Africa under the new AFRICOM, and prepares to dispatch troops to newly acquired bases in Colombia as the spearhead for further penetration of that continent, it is simultaneously targeting Eurasia and the heart of that vast land mass, the countries of the former Soviet Union. Within months of the formal breakup of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics in December of 2001, leading American policy advisers and government officials went to work devising a strategy to insure that the fragmentation was final and irreversible. And to guarantee that the fifteen new nations emerging from the ruins of the Soviet Union would not be allied in even a loose association such as the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) founded in the month of the Soviet Union’s dissolution…

Hebron’s architecture of occupation
Sarah Lazare and Clare Bayard writing from Hebron, occupied West Bank
November 23, 2009 – The word “revenge” is scrawled in Hebrew on a Palestinian school in Hebron in the occupied West Bank. The windows are covered with screens and the play yard obstructed with more screens tipped with barbed wire, to obstruct the stones regularly pelted down by Jewish settlers. The space between the school and the neighboring building is blocked off with large wooden slabs, to ensure that Palestinian school children do not encroach into settler territory. Nearby checkpoints and cameras placed on rooftops serve as constant reminders that these kids’ every movement is monitored and contained. This schoolyard scene, on an empty weekend day, illustrates the separation and containment that has become written into the architecture of Hebron…

You mean Gaza isn’t being rebuilt?
Eva Bartlett
November 23, 2009 – In East Beit Hanoun yesterday, still roughly 2 km from the eastern border with Israel, we are surveying the destruction of water wells and cisterns, along with their motors –noting that new motors or parts are not available in Gaza, and that the rubble those wells within 1km of the border to Israel cannot be cleared due to a very fear of Israeli shooting. Alongside one of the hundreds of wells destroyed in Gaza, we see the Basiouni family re-building their flattened home. They are more fortunate than those over 4,000 whose homes were destroyed by Israeli bombing, intentionally-set explosions, and bulldozing. The house being re-built is smaller than the original. But the fortune comes with the lovely stones, blocks of cement and tiles scaveged from demolished homes…

Israel: Threat Rises From Within

November 23, 2009 – Israelis were perturbed when new recruits at a recent passing-out parade at the Western Wall in Jerusalem, the remains of Judaism’s holiest site, suddenly unfurled banners reading, ‘Our Sons Do Not Evacuate Jews’. The concern became more acute last week. After the demolition of two hilltop settler houses in the occupied West Bank, six religious soldiers from the same brigade deployed placards at their base, declaring their intent to refuse to remove any more settlements if ordered to do so. The bulk of the Kfir brigade is composed of religious Jews from settler communities. Their national service combines military duties with religious studies…
