Vietnam replay: A war that can’t be won
by William P Polk, Le Monde diplomatique
November 8, 2009 – The documentary Combat Patrols Afghanistan, made by Bing West, who was embedded with US soldiers, has a message popular among Americans: “More senior-level attention must be paid to inflicting severe enemy losses in firefights and to arresting the Taliban, so that their morale and networks are broken… [We] need also to design concepts that bring more lethality to the ground battlefield”. Like US policy on Afghanistan, the film neglects the country and its people. The Taliban, anchored in a venerated religion (a primitive Islam) and a social/cultural code, are the only effective political-military organisation in the eyes of the majority Pashtun population. To fight the Taliban is to fight all Afghans, a fight we cannot win…

Iraqi School Books Criticised for Sectarian Bias
By Abeer Mohammed in Baghdad
November 8, 2009 – Zuhair Jerjis and Ahmed Mohammed are both ten years old and often meet after school to play video games. Though they enjoy each other’s company, Ahmed wonders whether he will one day have to kill his friend. The boys go to the same school and share a ride home to the same district of Baghdad, but their parents do not share the same faith. Zuhair’s family is Christian and Ahmed’s is Muslim. Recent religious lessons at school have left Ahmed questioning what end awaits his friendship. “When I study that we have to fight the unbelievers in the name of jihad, I think, ‘Will I kill Zuhair one day?’ … Our teacher tells us it is forbidden in Islam to make friends with unbelievers,” he said…

Seymour Hersh’s latest article only portrays his well-known anti-Pakistan bias: Pakistani FO spokesman
Associated Press of Pakistan
November 8, 2009 – Commenting on Mr. Seymour Hersh’s latest article “Defending the Arsenal-In an unstable Pakistan, can nuclear warheads be kept safe?” posted on the website of “The New Yorker” magazine, the Foreign Office Spokesman termed the assertions made in the article as utterly misleading and totally baseless. “The author of the article yet again portrays his well-known anti-Pakistan bias by making several false and highly irresponsible claims by quoting anonymous and unverifiable sources”. “The article is thus nothing more than a concoction to tarnish the image of Pakistan and create misgivings among its people,” the Spokesman said in statement here on Sunday. The Spokesman underlined that Pakistan’s strategic assets are completely safe and secure…

Pakistan rejects nuke takeover
SAPA
November 8, 2009 – Pakistan on Sunday angrily rejected a media report that raised fears of a militant takeover of the Taliban-hit nation’s nuclear weapons and suggested that the US had a hand in protecting the arsenal. In the latest issue of The New Yorker magazine, investigative journalist Seymour Hersh wrote that US officials had negotiated pacts with Pakistan to provide security for the nuclear arsenal in extreme circumstances. In response, Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement saying that the nation’s nuclear materials “are completely safe and secure. “Pakistan therefore does not require any foreign assistance in this regard,” the statement said.

Iran’s Karoubi attacks Ahmadinejad on U.S. policy
Reuters
November 8, 2009 – Iranian opposition figure Mehdi Karoubi, whose supporters clashed with police in a rally last week, accused President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Sunday of double standards in his U.S. policy. Karoubi, who was defeated in June’s disputed presidential election, said the populist leader’s government had shown more openness toward Washington than previous governments, despite strident anti-U.S. rhetoric…”(The government) has been constantly trying to change its policies recently, by sending congratulation messages, sending letters even if the other side doesn’t reply, and expressing readiness for dialogue,” Karoubi said in a message on his website…

Hamas rejects Mofaz call to talk as ‘Zionist vulgarity’
By Mazal Mualem, Haaretz Correspondent
November 8, 2009 – The Hamas rulers of the Gaza Strip said Sunday that they would never negotiate with the “Zionist enemy”, hours after Kadima MK Shaul Mofaz presented a plan to hold talks with the group and establish a Palestinian state in 60 percent of the West Bank within one year. In its official response, Hamas called Mofaz’s offer “Zionist vulgarity” and said it would never recognize Israel or give legitimacy to the occupation. “Any negotiation with the Zionist enemy regarding rights and legitimate recognition would only give it further excuse to commit crimes,” said Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum…

Top Israeli lawmaker wants talks with Hamas
Ma’an News
November 8, 2009 – In the wake of President Mahmoud Abbas’ planned retirement from politics, Israeli Knesset Member Shaul Mofaz (Kadima) on Sunday said his government should begin planning for a potential Hamas victory… Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum told Ma’an the proposal was “a malicious Israeli attempt to take advantage of the state of Palestinian disunity, to beautify the occupation, and to exploit opportunities to divide us.” “We don’t believe in negotiations with [Israel] – negotiations that would legitimize the occupation of our land and holy places – to clean up its image internationally and cover up its crimes,” he said in a phone interview, as talks “would amount to repeating a failed two-decade experiment that has benefited only the occupation.”…

Xinhua
November 8, 2009 — It is still hard for Nada Joma’a, a 14-year-old girl from the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood in northern Gaza City, to forget the time when an Israeli missile destroyed her house, killed her mother and cut her leg during the 22-day Israeli air raid on the Gaza Strip that ended on Jan. 18. “It’s the hardest memories I have ever had in my life. I can’t forget the scene when the missile hit our house, the huge explosion, the dust, the smoke and the rubble fell on our heads. IRAQ: Food insecurity on the rise, says official
IRIN News
November 8, 2009 – More and more people in Iraq are being affected by food insecurity, a senior official has said. Reduced domestic agricultural production, inflation, unemployment and a crumbling system of subsidized food distributions have hit poor people the hardest. “There is still a big percentage of Iraqi people who can’t secure enough food. With unemployment running at 18-20 percent they can’t buy what they need,” said Muna Turki Al-Mousawi, head of the state-run Centre for Market Research and Consumer Protection, adding that about 20 percent of Iraq’s 25 million people live below the poverty line…

Israel’s separation barrier has cut off Amer’s home from those of his neighbours and the view of his village has been replaced by the wall. African-Americans slam Obama in White House protest
AFP
November 8, 2009 – Decrying Barack Obama as “white power in black face,” hundreds of African-Americans marched on the White House Saturday to protest policies of the first black US president, and demand that he bring US troops home. More than 200 people gathered for the first public demonstration by African Americans against the Obama administration since his historic inauguration in January, and slammed the president for continuing what they described as Washington’s “imperialist” agenda around the world. “We recognize that Barack Hussein Obama is white power in black face,” civil rights activist Omali Yeshitela, chairman of the Black is Back coalition which arranged the protest, called into a megaphone as the group marched outside the mansion’s gates…

Lest We Remember!
Hussein Al-alak, The Iraq solidarity Campaign
November 8, 2009 – …We are asked to remember the names of those soldiers killed, but not once will an explanation be given as to the reasons why their lives were taken. In Afghanistan, British soldiers have died because two aeroplanes flew into the Twin Towers in the USA. In Afghanistan, soldiers have died, like the ordinary Afghans, not even for the illusion of Freedom and Democracy but because Tony Blair wanted to prove his commitment to the “special relationship” he had with George W Bush… And what about Iraq, the fact that British soldiers have also died, that if you look at much of the British media today in 2009, you would think that there had never even been an invasion or occupation. “Lest we forget” that over 179 British servicemen and one million Iraqi’s have died because the British government have not been held to account, for publically lying about allegations relating to weapons of mass destruction and the US myth of Saddam being involved in 9/11…

Iranian lawmaker warns Russia over missile delay
By NASSER KARIMI (AP)
November 8, 2009 — A senior Iranian lawmaker warned Russia that its delay in delivering an anti-aircraft missile defense system to Tehran could harm relations between the two countries, state television reported Sunday. Russia signed a contract two years ago to sell the S-300 surface-to-air missiles to Iran but has not made any deliveries or given any explanation for the delay. The United States and Israel strongly oppose the deal because it would significantly boost Iran’s air defense capabilities at a time of heightened tension over the country’s nuclear program…

Life in hell along the Gaza-Israel border
Ma’an News
November 8, 2009 – Residents of the Gaza Strip’s borders live in a state of fear, particularly those who own agricultural lands near the eastern borders and cannot access them from fear of being shot by Israeli forces present in the area. Residents further assert that they receive phone calls from Israeli soldiers demanding information on captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, in return for money. Ahmad Hillis, a resident of the eastern region of Gaza near the border, explained the suffering they endure in the area that residents term a “shooting field,” articulating that “many people possess agricultural lands in the eastern area and cannot reach them because they are frightened of being shot by the Israeli soldiers who engage in weekly inspection and shooting operations, mess up and raze lands.”…

Afghan insurgents learn to destroy key U.S. armored vehicle
By Jonathan S. Landay | McClatchy Newspapers
November 7, 2009 — Taliban-led insurgents in Afghanistan have devised ways to cripple and even destroy the expensive armored vehicles that offer U.S. forces the best protection against roadside bombs by using increasingly large explosive charges and rocket-propelled grenades, according to U.S. soldiers and defense officials. At least eight American troops have been killed this year in attacks on so-called Mine-Resistant Ambush-Protected vehicles, or MRAPs, and 40 more have been wounded, said a senior U.S. military official who, like others interviewed on the issue, declined to be further identified because of the issue’s sensitivity…

Thomas F. Barton
November 7, 2009 – American soldiers serving in Afghanistan are depressed and deeply disillusioned, according to the chaplains of two US battalions that have spent nine months on the front line in the war against the Taleban. “The many soldiers who come to see us have a sense of futility and anger about being here. They are really in a state of depression and despair and just want to get back to their families,” said Captain Jeff Masengale, of the 10th Mountain Division’s 2-87 Infantry Battalion. “They feel they are risking their lives for progress that’s hard to discern,” said Captain Sam Rico, of the Division’s 4-25 Field Artillery Battalion. “They are tired, strained, confused and just want to get through.” The chaplains said that they were speaking out because the men could not…

Kosher Aristotle and the Shoa Survivor
Gilad Atzmon
November 7, 2009 – The French Jewish ‘philosopher’ Bernard-Henri Lévy is convinced that Roman Polanski should be freed from jail. Polanski was recently arrested in Switzerland for having unlawful sex with a 13-year-oldgirl in 1977. Lévy thinks that Polanski should evade justice, you want to know why? Easy, because he is a ‘Holocaust survivor’. Here is an extract from Lévy’s celebrity petition: “Seventy-six years old, a survivor of Nazism and of Stalinist persecutions in Poland, Roman Polanski risks spending the rest of his life in jail for deeds which would be beyond the statute-of-limitations in Europe.” Following Bernard-Henri Lévy’s reasoning, survivors are beyond justice. They should never be jailed for the ‘rest of their life’, not even for unlawful sex with a minor. This sickening and morbid logic explains Israeli barbarism and Jewish collective support of Israeli war crimes. At the end of the day, too many Jews tend to regard themselves as a collective of survivors. Accordingly, in their eyes, they are indeed beyond the law…
