Threats to unity in Sudan
Galal Nassar
November 6, 2009 – …The first challenge facing today’s Sudan is ideological. The so-called “New Sudan” scheme, dividing the country into various parts, is closely linked to the global plans of messianic US politicians and champions of the Project for the New American Century, drawn up under former US president George W Bush. The scheme aims to change the identity of Sudan, erasing its history and sapping the power of its people. The implementation of this scheme in Sudan would promote goals that transcend Sudanese geographical borders and national territories. Eliminating Arab and Islamic culture in Sudan is only one of the declared goals of this scheme…

ExxonMobil-led consortium nets ‘supergiant’ Iraq oil field
Ahmed Rasheed and Muhanad Mohammed, Reuters
November 6, 2009 – An ExxonMobil-led consortium has beaten rival Russian, French and Chinese groups to bag initial rights to develop Iraq’s West Qurna field, the Oil Ministry said, adding momentum to Iraq’s bid to unlock its oil riches. With reserves of 8.7 billion barrels, West Qurna is among the prized Iraqi fields eyed by Western oil majors as they face flat or lower output at home and stiff competition from Chinese and Indian oil companies in bidding for oilfields elsewhere. “The consortium led by ExxonMobil, which includes Shell, won the contract to develop West Qurna Phase One oilfield,” Oil Ministry spokesman Asim Jihad said…

Human Rights Watch: Iran covered up rape of detainees
By JASON KEYSER (AP)
November 6, 2009 — An international human rights group said Friday it has documented three cases of sexual assault against detainees arrested during Iran’s postelection turmoil, including one that was supported by an official report but not investigated further. Human Rights Watch accused Iran’s judiciary of covering up the abuses and called on it to immediately open investigations and prosecute those responsible. Claims that detainees were raped by their jailers first emerged in August, deeply embarrassing Iran’s clerical leadership in the midst of a crackdown on protesters who accused authorities of rigging President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s June 12 re-election…

Declassified FBI File Alleges an Israeli Intelligence Agent Worked at AIPAC
Reuters
November 6, 2009 — An agent of the Israeli intelligence service worked on the staff of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) according to a newly declassified FBI file. An August 13, 1984 secret communication from the FBI Washington Field Office (WFO) to the FBI director states, “WFO files disclose that AIPAC is a powerful pro-Israel lobbying group staffed by U.S. citizens. WFO files contain an unsubstantiated allegation that a member of the Israeli Intelligence Service was a staff member of AIPAC.”..

Focusing on Ft. Hood Killer’s Beliefs Is an Easy Out to Avoid the Deeper Reasons for the Massacre
Mark Ames
November 6, 2009 – It’s hard to pinpoint what’s the most shocking thing about Major Malik Nadal Hasan’s shooting rampage in Fort Hood, Texas. I’ll start with this: there’s nothing all that ground-breaking about it. Happens all the time, it’s just that we’re a nation of amnesiacs who forget all the unpleasantries, and refuse to learn the valuable lessons. For starters, Fort Hood is located in Killeen, Texas — where one of the deadliest rampage shootings in American history took place in 1991, when an unemployed ex-Navy enlistee, George Hennard Jr., crashed his pickup into a popular cafeteria, pulled out two handguns (Hasan also used two handguns), and murdered 23 people before taking his own life. The day before the massacre, Hennard was eating a hamburger in a local restaurant watching the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings and, according to the manager, “When an interview with Anita Hill came on, he just went off. He started screaming, ‘You dumb bitch! You bastards opened the door for all the women!’” …

New scanner reveals body piercings & genital outlines
UK airport tells people to get ‘naked’ for security
Al Arabiya
October 14, 2009 – Officials at Britain’s Manchester Airport defended a controversial decision to introduce a ‘naked scanner’ that sees through clothing, arguing it will speed up security, press reports said Wednesday, a move which was likely to cause a stir amongst some who may not like the exposure. The device, which is currently being tested at the U.K.’s fourth largest airport for the next 12 months, captures a “quite revealing” image of passengers and is aimed at spotting if someone is hiding explosives or weapons, Sky News reported…

The Life of a Student in Gaza
by Marryam Haleem
November 6 , 2009 – …Many times he was even able to attend final exams. “I’d just keep studying throughout the semester and when time for exams come, attacks happen in Beit Hanoun and friends and relatives are killed, [so I’d miss the exams]. I was supposed graduate in 2008, but I graduated in 2009, one year late because of these attacks. Attacks which have never stopped. Even now. Especially in my city.” Ahmad was finally set to graduate in December 2008. But he was reminded once again that a Palestinian who dared pursue a good life had heavy taxes to pay. “The end of December turned out to be the beginning of a war, not the beginning of final exams. It was a big, I don’t know how to describe it,” he said, searching for words to describe the deep personal affront he felt, “it was like, ‘here is a gift for graduation: You wont graduate. Just keep waiting for death.’ “His month of exams was exchanged for a month of terror…
