Did Richard Goldstone hide more sinister crimes in Gaza? – Part 1: White Phosphorus and Flechettes
Peter Eyre
October 30, 2009 – There was much praise for the UN investigations into war crimes committed in Gaza, led by Richard Goldstone. However, I feel that this report did not go far enough to investigate some other more serious allegations that were made. There is a sense of urgency to bring this investigation forward and to put those responsible on trial but one must understand that something much more sinister did not even get a mention and has since been swept under the carpet. Let’s take a closer look at some aspects of this report which certainly showed a distinct weakness in the team’s ability to understand what constitutes a breach of the Geneva Convention…

Did Richard Goldstone Hide More Sinister Crimes in Gaza? Part 2 – DIME and Uranium Weapons
Peter Eyre
October 30, 2009 – Again we see a classic example of a UN investigation that only plays with the periphery of War Crimes committed by Israel whilst at the same time ignoring the more important horrific crimes carried out by the IDF. Goldstone brushed aside the use of White Phosphorus and Flechette weapons and only touched briefly on DIME weapons. He totally ignored weapons containing Uranium components such as the four weapons shown in this photograph. So let’s look at DIME (Dense Inert Metal Explosive) and how it works: DIME bombs produce an unusually powerful blast within a relatively small area, spraying a superheated “micro-shrapnel” of powdered Heavy Metal Tungsten Alloy (HMTA). Scientific studies have found that HMTA is chemically toxic, damages the immune system, rapidly causes cancer, and attacks DNA…

Desperately Seeking Peacenik, Pot-Smoking Hippies
Arthur Silber
October 30, 2009 -…To make the point again: if you wish to oppose these immensely destructive wars, bombings and interventions, you must ignore all the superficial marketing and camouflage — all the talk of “humanitarian” concerns, promoting “democracy,” “regional stability,” and so on — and focus relentlessly on the intentionally and carefully chosen policy of U.S. geopolitical dominance. And that is the policy Hoh accepts in all its essentials. He argues only one particular war, and only on narrow, strategic grounds. He offers no opposition that can genuinely encourage change, which must always be opposition on principle…

UN General Assembly denounces U.S. blockade of Cuba
Emile Schepers
October 30, 2009 – For the 18th consecutive year, the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday voted to condemn the economic blockade that the United States has maintained against socialist Cuba since shortly after the triumph of the Cuban Revolution in January of 1959. The United States calls the policy an embargo, but Cuba points out that since it does not merely prevent U.S. persons and enterprises from doing business in Cuba, but strives to punish foreign companies who trade with Cuba also, it amounts to a blockade…

Victims twice over
By Barbara Serra
October 30, 2009 – … Hundreds of women were widowed during Israel’s war on Gaza, and now they’re left having to support their children on their own. I spoke to Mona Al Shawa from the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights. They published a report called Through Women’s Eyes which looked at the effects of the war on the women of Gaza. It makes for sobering reading. Gaza is a conservative society where the woman’s traditional role is at home to take care of the house and children. Mona told me that when widows are thrust into their husband’s role, they’re often victimised by cultural and economic discrimination. With unemployment sky-high in Gaza, jobs are much more likely to go to men, especially considering that many of the women are not highly educated…

SYRIA: Thousands of Iraqi refugees seek resettlement in West
IRIN news
October 30, 2009 – …The Syrian government says it has registered 1.1 million Iraqis crossing into Syria since 2007, while as of the end of September UNHCR in Damascus had officially registered 215,429, with 27,198 registrations for 2009. With the 25 October bombings in Baghdad which killed at least 155 people – the worst attacks for two years – UNHCR is braced for a renewed movement of refugees should security in Iraq continue to deteriorate. A year after its launch, strikingly few Iraqis have taken up the UN’s Voluntary Repatriation Programme. Less than 300 families from Syria have returned to Iraq under the programme, though the number claiming resettlement has grown rapidly…

Palestinians File Lawsuits Over Gaza War
By Mel Frykberg
October 30, 2009 – As the legal and moral implications of the UN Goldstone report on Israel’s military assault on Gaza continue to mount, Gazans are taking matters into their own hands and preparing civil lawsuits. The Israeli defence ministry’s prosecution department has received about 1,500 notices of future civil lawsuits against the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) over damage caused to Palestinians and their property, and loss of earning capacity during Operation Cast Lead, Israel’s codename for its three-week attack on the coastal territory.

Jon Stewart Needs Your Support
Jon Stewart Needs Letters of Support for having Dr. Barghouti and Anna Baltzer on “The Daily Show”.
Anna Baltzer
Dear friends, Last night Dr. Barghouti and I were on “The Daily Show” with Jon Stewart talking about Palestine. The show was overwhelmed with angry emails and phone calls prior to the appearance, and up until the last minute it seemed like they might cancel. During the taping the show had it’s only heckler in 11 years. The entire staff was very nervous and may come to regret the monumental decision (and not make it again) as they will surely be inundated now that the show has aired. That is why it is CRUCIAL that the show receive letters of support from anyone who appreciated the interview. PLEASE take a moment to give a quick thank you to the Daily Show…

Palestinian volunteerism and defying Israeli occupation policies and attacks
Eva Bartlett, In Gaza
October 30, 2009 – On a quiet October morning, Fida Zaneen, 19, sings a traditional love song as she pulls olives from trees in Beit Hanoun’s border region during the annual olive harvest. “My grandmother taught me the folk songs. They were popular all over Palestine many decades ago.” Saber Zaneen, 44, and Khalil Nassir, 45, alternately belt out traditional harvest songs as they, too, strip the limbs of the green and black fruit in the northern Gaza region. Keeping Palestinian culture alive is one of the mandates of Local Initiative, a Beit Hanoun-based volunteer group comprising many youths and women, and of which Fida Zaneen is a member. At group events, participants often sport traditional robes and Palestinian kuffiyehs, and dance dabke to hand-drums and singing from the group…

Obama signs law blocking release of torture photos
Daniel Tencer
October 30, 2009 – President Barack Obama received a great deal of media attention on Wednesday for signing a historic hate-crimes bill into law. But, on the same day, the US president also signed a Homeland Security spending bill that received far less attention, even though it effectively blocks efforts by activists to reveal photos of detainee abuse in US custody. “We are disappointed that the president has signed a law giving the Defense Department the authority to hide evidence of its own misconduct, and we hope the defense secretary will not take advantage of that authority by suppressing photos related to the abuse of prisoners,” Jameel Jaffer, national security director for the ACLU, said in a statement…

Video: Child Detention in OPT: Mohammad’s Story
DCIPS
October 30, 2009 – Mohammad (14 years old at the time) was playing with friends on a hill near his village (Biddu, near Ramallah) on 4 February 2008 when he was suddenly apprehended by four men dressed in civilian clothes. The men grabbed Mohammad knocking him to the ground; they struck him several times on the head with a gun whilst his face was sprayed with tear gas. The men then blindfolded him and tied his hands and feet with plastic cuffs before throwing him into the back of a vehicle. Mohammad was interrogated in the absence of a lawyer, deceived into signing a confession to throwing stones, and imprisoned in Israel for four-and-a-half months…

WHO: “Israel Prevented Entry Of Medical Equipment Into Gaza”
Saed Bannoura
October 30, 2009 – The World Health Organization (WHO) stated that Israel had prevented, for the fourth time, the transfer of medical supplies and equipment to the besieged Gaza Strip. The supplies were supposed to be allowed into the Gaza Strip through the Kerem Shalom (Karem Abu Salem) Crossing. The WHO added that in spite of conducting the needed coordination, Israel still prevented the entry of the desperately needed supplies…

Karzai as Diem
Afghanistan as Vietnam
Justin Raimondo
October 30, 2009 – The parallels between our stinging defeat in Vietnam and our coming defeat in Afghanistan get eerier by the moment. Just as Matthew Hoh, a top-ranking US official and Marine officer in Zabul province resigns in protest over the war – writing that it “reminds me horribly of our involvement with South Vietnam; an unpopular and corrupt government we backed at the expense of our Nation’s own internal peace” – it looks like Karzai is getting the Diem treatment from his American patrons. Or, rather, Diem-lite – since they (probably) have no intention of offing him, but just want to get rid of him as quickly and painlessly as possible. And the way to do that is to “out” him as a CIA asset – which they have done, courtesy of the New York Times…

Defying Israel With Aid
Faryal Leghari
October 30, 2009 – The Palestinians need humanitarian aid because of the situation created by Israel, but more than this, Israel needs to be confronted politically, argues Huwaida Arraf, leader of the Free Gaza Movement and co-founder of the International Solidarity Movement. In an exclusive interview with Khaleej Times, Huwaida and Adam Shapiro, a human rights activist and documentary filmmaker, spoke at length about their mission, that is aimed at helping the besieged Palestinians and defying the Israeli siege of Gaza until it is lifted. Huwaida, an Arab-Israeli, has been defying Israel politically from humanitarian perspective, bringing attention to Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories, its persecution of the Palestinian people and its continuing violation of international law…

Whitewashing war crimes with stale lies
By Khalid Amayreh
October 30, 2009 – Many Zionist Jews are angry and frustrated these days following the ample attention given to the Goldstone report around the world. This is why huge amounts of classical Zionist lies about the Nazi-like winter onslaught against the Gaza Strip are being pumped through the internet. One Zionist hasbara (propaganda) activist, whose job is to propagate these lies in order to white wash the virtual Gaza genocide, has claimed that whatever wrongs Israel committed in Gaza occurred by mistake…

Obama signs bills for record Pentagon, Homeland Security spending
By Patrick Martin
October 30, 2009 – In a ceremony Wednesday, US President Barack Obama signed legislation authorizing the largest ever military budget, a gargantuan $680 billion for the Pentagon, including $130 billion for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. On Thursday, he signed a spending bill funneling another $44 billion into the Department of Homeland Security, to strengthen the apparatus of state repression within the United States. The back-to-back bill signings are a clear demonstration that Obama is extending and intensifying the program of militarism and attacks on democratic rights for which the Bush administration was deservedly hated, in the United States and worldwide…
