“CIA prevented prisoner deaths to prolong torture”
RussiaToday
October 28, 2009 – The CIA took measures to make sure their tortured prisoners did not die – in order to continue further torturing, according to human rights lawyer John Sifton… RT spoke to Human Rights lawyer John Sifton about the kind of abuses which took place. “In the military there were a large number of deaths with the CIA,” he said. “It engaged in horrendous abuses, they appear to have taken precautions to prevent people from dying. This might sound humane, but in fact it’s sickening, as they were torturing them at the same time trying to maintain their health so that they could continue.”..

Israel’s European Lobby
Maidhc Ó Cathail
October 28, 2009 – In their 2006 article “The Israel Lobby,” John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt famously assert, “Other special-interest groups have managed to skew foreign policy, but no lobby has managed to divert it as far from what the national interest would suggest, while simultaneously convincing Americans that US interests and those of the other country – in this case, Israel – are essentially identical.” Having for decades successfully steered policymaking in Washington in a pro-Israel direction, Israel’s American Lobby has more recently turned its attention to Europe. Despite its brief presence in Brussels, it appears to have already had marked success in influencing the nascent foreign policy of the European Union…

35% of East Jerusalem expropriated – study
By Hani Hazaimeh
October 27, 2009 – Israel has expropriated some 35 per cent of East Jerusalem’s territory, over 24,000 dunums of land, from its Palestinian owners despite the fact that in 20 years the majority of Jerusalem’s population will be Palestinians, a study said. According to the study, compiled by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, Palestinians currently make up 35 per cent of the city’s population compared with 25.5 per cent in 1967, adding that “in the absence of a political agreement on the borders of the city and the status of its Palestinian residents, Jerusalem is approaching a bi-national urban reality”…

Divide and Rule: The Key Strategy of the US and Its Western Allies
By S. Hewage
October 28, 2009 – The latest attacks on Indian embassy in Afghanistan and the Pakistan’s military headquarters would trigger a new wave of accusations and counteraccusations by India and Pakistan. It seems that the United States is achieving its military strategy to keep regional conflicts going, so that the United States is not only secure, but also economically strong. Unfortunately, both India and Pakistan have so far failed to realize this, to work out a solution to their internal problems and to keep the hegemonic forces out of their region. The situation in Pakistan will soon be like that of Afghanistan and Iraq…

Studies in Racism
Sara Leibovitz-Dar
October 28, 2009 – “When Israel sends a sophisticated satellite into space, the Arabs come up with a new kind of hummus,” Dr. Dan Schueftan told students during his course on Israel’s security perspective in the diplomacy and security program for senior managers at Tel Aviv University. An essay that was published in last Friday’s weekend supplement reveals that during his lectures, Dr. Schueftan made additional remarks such as “The Arabs are the biggest failure in the history of the human race. There’s nothing under the sun that’s more screwed up than the Palestinians”; “The Iran-Iraq war was, in Hanna Szenes’s words, ‘My God, my God, I pray that it never end. Seven years of pure pleasure”; “Throughout the Arab world, people fire guns at weddings in order to prove that they have at least one thing that’s hard and in working order that can shoot.”…

US backs Pakistani military campaign in Waziristan
$7.5 billion in aid aimed at propping up unstable U.S. client state
Mazda Majidi
October 28, 2009 – Under great pressure from the United States to attack Taliban and tribal fighters in the border regions with Afghanistan, Pakistan has launched a large-scale assault on the tribal region in the northwest of the country. Embroiled in a deep civil crisis, the military campaign is likely to further strain the stability of the U.S.-client state. According to the New York Times, the Obama administration rushed hundreds of millions of dollars of arms to Pakistan in the last month, including transport helicopters, spare parts for attack helicopters and night-vision equipment for F15 pilots. The Pentagon is also relaying targeting information collected by U.S. drone aircraft to the Pakistani military. In the past eight months, the U.S. has doubled the number of military advisers in Pakistan…

National Wave of Privatization Scandals and Disasters Ignored By Media, Concealed From Public
A Black Agenda Radio commentary by Bruce Dixon
October 28, 2009 – The total absence of local journalism in many markets, and the fixation of what news reporting there is on a handful of crime and celebrity stories helps conceal from the public the real price of global empire and the Wall Street Bailout, or how the privatization measures widely undertaken by state and local governments to relieve their financial pressure have been a cavalcade of corruption, a cascade of scandal and failure that make the rich even richer and the rest of us… well, you know…

NATO vs CSTO: The Fogh of war
Eric Walberg
October 28, 2009 – NATO’s reputation as the guardian of peace on Earth is in tatters these days. Once avowedly an alliance of North America and Western Europe to fight the communist hordes of Eurasia, it morphed into something quite difference with the collapse of the socialist bloc two decades ago. It now pretends to unite all of Europe to fight the Muslim hordes wherever they be found and, of course the Russians, just for good measure…

Khamenei says questioning election a crime: TV
Reuters
October 28, 2009 – Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Wednesday it was a crime to cast doubt on the June election, which the opposition says was rigged in favor of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, state television reported. Khamenei endorsed Ahmadinejad’s victory in the June 12 election, which was followed by opposition protests and plunged Iran into its deepest internal crisis since the 1979 Islamic revolution. Khamenei said the election was held and there was a big voter turnout but that some people had “unfairly” ignored this. “The leader … termed questioning the basis of the election the biggest crime,” state television said in a report from Khamenei’s meeting with leading scientists in Tehran…

But without work or help from any one, she is accepting to remarry at the advice of her deceased husband’s sister. “I’m being forced to change my mind in exchange for a better life for my sons.” Haifa only saw the future husband once and never spoke with him, insisting it’s a marriage of convenience for both of them…

The Gaza Chronicles: Part 1- “The Forgotten Story”
By: Aditya Ganapathiraju
October 28, 2009 – The situation on the ground in Gaza has continued to deteriorate since January. One of the most densely populated areas in the world, this small coastal strip is home to a million and a half Palestinians, many of them refugees for over 60 years. It is now the worst condition it’s been in since 1967 when the Israeli army took military control of the land. As numerous scholars and observers have concluded, the Israeli plan for Gaza seems to be to turn it into a depoliticized humanitarian catastrophe, turning the Palestinians trapped in there “beggars who have no political identity and therefore can have no political claims.”

It’s All About Demography, Again!
Saed Bannoura
October 28, 2009 – A recent Israeli report based on a study conducted by the Macro Center for Political Economy in Israel states that the aim of Israel in East Jerusalem is to guarantee a Jewish majority by all means in order to prevent any future partition of the city. The report ‘warns’ that in twenty years, and in spite of land annexation and home demolitions, there will be a Palestinian majority in Jerusalem. It adds that the Israeli policies in Jerusalem aim at maintaining Jewish majority by all means. The report was distributed to Israeli members of Knesset in recent days…

Just earlier this week, members of that same group of asylum seekers that was sent away were able to just survey the latest bomb outrage in Baghdad. This bombing took 155 lives. The group of Iraqi asylum seekers were sent home just two weeks ago after the British government claimed that Iraq was safe. One of the deported Iraqi asylum seekers, Kamaran Moulood, age 39, said that he wants the British officials who sent them back to Baghdad to see the bombing. He went on to say that they are in hell, and that their lives are in danger. He is not sure how much more obvious it can be…

Abbas issued a decree announcing that presidential and parliamentary polls would take place on January 24, but an interior ministry statement on Wednesday said the elections had been called “by figures who do not have the right to declare it”. Shot after photographing the Gaza sea
Eva Bartlett writing from the occupied Gaza Strip
October 28, 2009 – On 4 October, Ashraf Abu Suleiman, a 16-year-old from Gaza’s Jabaliya refugee camp, went to the northwest coast town of Sudaniya to visit an ill school friend. The teen then went to the sea, where he rolled up the legs of his pants, waded into the water and enjoyed the late summer morning. He took some photos of the sea and of the area around him, intending to play with the photos later on Photoshop, a hobby he and his father share. Minutes later, Ashraf was running in blind terror as Israeli soldiers in a gunboat off the coast began shooting at Palestinian fishermen. He was hit by an Israeli soldier’s bullet which bore through his neck and grazed his vertebrae, fracturing C-4 and C-5, leaving him bleeding on the ground and unable to stand up…

Preview of Ramzy Baroud’s “My Father was a Freedom Fighter”
by Stephen Lendman
October 28, 2009 – What follows is a snapshot of Baroud’s new book, soon to be released by Pluto Press. As distinguished Palestinian author, historian, activist and founder and president of the London-based Palestine Land Society, Salman Abu Sitta, explained in the forward: Ramzy is Mohammed Baroud’s son, a heroic “freedom fighter, (and himself) a gifted writer (who) eloquently unearthed the recent history of Beit Daras” village, chronicled his family’s struggle in exile, and recounted their determination to survive and endure under siege and assaults that continue to this day. Many books covered the early years, but most were in Arabic. Baroud’s is one of the few in English “about the life, depopulation and (literal) struggle for survival of the people of a Palestinian village in southern Palestine.”…
