Afghan Resistance Statement
UN, in the Claws of the Colonialists
Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan
October 26, 2009 -…The United Nations is now not a conduit to strive for realization of national independence and aspirations of people as per its Charter. It has not helped nations to prevent foreign aggressions but contrarily, this august World Body has supported foreign invasions; cooperated with them and has worked as a facilitating instrument for the invaders. The examples on hand are the issues of Palestine, Iraq and Afghanistan. The UN has sided with the arrogant and the murderers, brazenly calling those who resist the invasions, as aggressors. If we take a quick look at the military aggression against the sovereignty of Afghanistan by America under unjustified and ambiguous pretexts and mull over the casualties, torture and prosecution of the Afghans at the hands of the invaders and the negative role being played by the United Nations in this regard, we easily reach the conclusion that putting great expectation on this Universal Body is just a mockery and illusion. Former US president, George Bush, in his speech to the General Assembly on 12 September 2002, severely marred the dignity and reputation of the UN. He said, UN was only a venue of rhetorics and words, not a place of actions and decisions. He went on to say, if the UN is not going to disarm Iraq, America will do so. He did what he said in contravention of all international norms and rules and killed nearly one million Iraqis during the past six years. They destroyed I! raqi ins titutions, infrastructures and damaged economic and social values ironically under the very eyes of the UN but this World Body instead of taking proper steps to prevent the destruction of the basic social and economic institutions, have only limited itself to issuing statistics of the destroyed facilities…

West Bank land belongs to Jews, says Israeli army judge
Meron Rapoport in Jerusalem
October 26, 2009 – Major Adrian Agassi did not make the connection between the Bible, the land and the Jews when, fresh out of university, he left England for Israel in search of his roots. He was not even a practising Jew. But over the past quarter of a century, the Israeli army lawyer and then military judge at the forefront of arguably the most significant battle in the occupied West Bank – the confiscation of Palestinian land for the construction of Jewish settlements – has come to see himself as in service of a higher duty. In an unusually frank interview, which offers insights into the melding of religion, politics and law that underpins land seizures in the occupied territories, Agassi has laid out his belief that Israel has a biblical claim to territory beyond its borders and that he, even as an immigrant, has a right to live on it when those born there do not. “When we [Israelis] say that this is a political conflict, then we lose the battle,” he told the Guardian, adding that it should be remembered that the ancient land of Israel is “given to us by the Bible, not by some United Nations”…

Palestinian Feuds and International Stalemate
Patrick Seale
October 26, 2009 – The bitter and interminable quarrel between Fatah and Hamas is spreading its poison across the Middle East and beyond. The breach between the West Bank and Gaza appears unbridgeable. The two broken-backed and suffering territories — the one under Israeli occupation, the other under Israeli siege — remain at each other’s throats, as if unaware that their feuding is in danger of dooming their national cause to oblivion. The Palestinians themselves are the main victims of the stubborn Fatah-Hamas feud. Mahmud Abbas, the Fatah leader and president of the Palestinian Authority, is widely discredited in Palestinian circles, not least because of his shilly-shallying over the Goldstone Report on war crimes committed during the Gaza war last December-January. But there are other casualties as well…

Prisoner Society: more than 2,000 cases of torture in Israeli prison during past year
PNN
October 26, 2009 – President of the Palestinian Prisoner Society, Qaddura Fares, reported today that during the past year there have been more than 2,000 cases of torture in Israeli prison. The Israeli administration has exerted, and continues to do so, violence, beatings, and physical and psychological torture against Palestinians, said Fares on Monday. He described daily evidence of the “barbarism of the occupation forces against prisoners.”…

The Pentagon’s Dirty Bombers: Depleted Uranium in the USA
Dave Lindorff
October 26, 2009 – The Nuclear Regulator Commission is considering an application by the US Army for a permit to have depleted uranium at its Pohakuloa Training Area, a vast stretch of flat land in what’s called the “saddle” between the sacred mountains of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea on Hawaii’s Big Island, and at the Schofield Barracks on the island of Oahu. In fact, what the Army is asking for is a permit to leave in place the DU left over from years of test firing of M101 mortar “spotting rounds,” that each contained close to half a pound of depleted uranium (DU). The Army, which originally denied that any DU weapons had been used at either location, now says that as many as 2000 rounds of M101 DU mortars might have been fired at Pohakuloa alone. But that’s only a small part of the story…

Palestinian farmers struggle with water crisis
By Patrick Moser
October 26, 2009 — Once a proud grower of bananas, Abdullah Naji has been harvesting little more than dust in recent years. He blames his ill-fortune both on drought and on Israel’s water policies. “Every day I pray for water,” says Naji, 40. But his village of Auja, in the heart of the West Bank’s traditionally fertile Jordan Valley, is bone dry. Even the goats cannot find food amid the rocks and dust. Naji gave up his banana plantation two years ago and converted to herding sheep. “At least now he can complain to his animals,” a neighbour jokes…

Israel rules out questioning troops about Gaza offensive
CNN
October 26, 2009 — The Israeli government has ruled out setting up an independent investigative body that would interview Israeli military personnel about allegations that the military committed war crimes during its offensive against Hamas earlier this year. According to an Israeli government official, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday met with representatives from the Defense, Justice and Foreign ministries to discuss the 575-page report — approved by the U.N. Council for Human Rights earlier this month — which accuses both Israel and the Palestinian movement Hamas of “actions amounting to war crimes, possibly crimes against humanity” during the three-week offensive which ended in January…

U.S. Forcibly Deported Islanders And Gassed Their Dogs To Make Way For Diego Garcia Military Base
By Sherwood Ross
October 26, 2009 – In order to convert the sleepy, Indian Ocean island of Diego Garcia into a dominating military base, the U.S. forcibly transported its 2,000 Chagossian inhabitants into exile and gassed their dogs. By banning journalists from the area, the U.S. Navy was able to perpetrate this with virtually no press coverage, says David Vine, an assistant professor of anthropology at American University and author of “Island of Shame: the Secret History of the U.S. Military on Diego Garcia(Princeton University Press).”…

Iran Hints At Acceptance Of Atom Deal With Powers

Damaged Gaza schools need windows before winter

October 26, 2009 – Gaza schools damaged by Israeli bombing will be exposed to the cold and rain this winter unless Israel relaxes its blockade to permit the import of windows, doors and building materials, officials said. Officials of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) and Gaza’s Education Ministry say thousands of pupils face “darkness and cold” this winter in poorly lit and sparsely furnished schoolrooms. Military Resistance 7J17: The Name Of The Body
Thomas F. Barton
October 26, 2009 – …THE U.S. left has failed to effectively oppose the war in Afghanistan from its onset, when the U.S. population overwhelmingly supported the war on the pretext that “we were attacked.” That support has severely eroded, and polls show that a clear majority now wants to end the occupation. Yet many on the left have remained confused for the last eight years—ardently opposing the war in Iraq while remaining silent about the equally immoral war in Afghanistan. This confusion has apparently been compounded by the election of Barack Obama, who initially opposed the invasion of Iraq in 2003. Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize notwithstanding, however, he has since embraced the aims of U.S. imperialism with gusto. U.S. troops and, perhaps more importantly, U.S. military bases remain in Iraq with no deadline for complete withdrawal. Obama authorized a surge of 21,000 additional U.S. troops to Afghanistan soon after taking office and is now pondering whether to send at least 40,000 more. These are no longer George W. Bush’s wars. Obama has claimed them for himself. So far, the only consequence of the surge has been the resurgence of the Taliban resistance against U.S. occupation. Even his pledge to close the prison camp at Guantánamo Bay remains unfulfilled. Yet Obama maintains a substantial following on the U.S. left, sowing yet more confusion among “antiwar” activists…

Burn in Hell

October 26, 2009 – This is not the first time that Americans burn the Koran, our Holy Book and which we consider a direct message from God. For us the Koran is the embodiment of the Divine Word. And it is the most sacred book, and the only Sacred Book worth defending. Desecrating the Koran happened numerous times…it happened in Iraq when mosques and homes were raided, it happened in Guantanamo and it is happening in Afghanistan… Today, Afghan protesters gathered in a demonstration, when they learned that our Holy Book was burned again…they burned an effigy of Obama instead, and some chanted “We don’t want democracy, we want Islam.” …Next time you ask yourselves why you are so hated and why this hatred is growing, remember your acts and what drives you and them…

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs: An Emotional Response
Chris Floyd
October 26, 2009 – …I realize that historical memory has always been a rare commodity in the United States, but one shudders to see that the onset of this chronic amnesia is now down to the merest months. Was it not just six months ago, in May 2009, that Obama made a great show of firing the commander in Afghanistan, General David McKiernan, and replacing him with a much-lauded “expert” in counterinsurgency, Gen. Stanley McChrystal — a close associate of the much-lauded “architect” of counterinsurgency in Iraq, General David Petraeus — the Bush-appointed officer whom Obama has retained as the top dog in the central fronts of the Terror War? Was not McChrystal championed by Robert Gates — the Bush-appointed factotum whom Obama has retained as the top dog in the Pentagon war machine? The fact that Obama has not yet signed off on McChrystal’s latest plan does not mean that he is not now, before our very eyes, promulgating the Pentagon’s time-honored bleed-build-rinse-repeat philosophy of occupation warfare. He has already launched one major Petraeus-style “surge” in Afghanistan this year; the current controversy about the McChrystal plan is confined to how many more troops to send, and how far the vastly stupid and dangerous American war in Pakistan should be escalated. Obama has already explicitly ruled out withdrawing from Afghanistan…

One military helicopter crashed in western Badghis province where seven US troops and three civilians were killed in an incident that the NATO-led force in Afghanistan said was not believed to have been caused by enemy fire. The Taliban said, however, it was behind the downing of the helicopter and claimed 14 Afghan civilians were killed in a subsequent aerial bombardment. October 26, 2009 – While Israel is one of the loudest voices calling for a tougher line on Iran’s nuclear programme, its own nuclear capability has never been put to inspection. Israel has two nuclear research centres – at Dimona and Soreq. The latest estimates suggest that Israel has produced at least 118 warheads with weapons grade plutonium. The Jericho ballistic missiles are capable of carrying such weapons. The Jericho One, which is now obsolete, had a range of 500 kilometres, and could carry a 20 kiloton nuclear warhead – 20 times more powerful than the US bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945…

October 26, 2009 – That social networking sites and applications such as Facebook, Twitter and their competitors can facilitate communication and information sharing amongst diverse groups and individuals is by now a cliché. It should come as no surprise then, that the secret state and the capitalist grifters whom they serve, have zeroed-in on the explosive growth of these technologies. One can be certain however, securocrats aren’t tweeting their restaurant preferences or finalizing plans for after work drinks. No, researchers on both sides of the Atlantic are busy as proverbial bees building a “total information” surveillance system, one that will, so they hope, provide police and security agencies with what they euphemistically call “actionable intelligence.”…

The runoff farce in Afghanistan

The entire degrading process reeks of cynicism. A United Nations-backed panel confirmed that over 1.2 million ballots in the August 20 election were fraudulent—including fully one-third of the votes cast for Karzai. The incumbent’s chief challenger, Abdullah Abdullah, is no less venal. Some 200,000 of his own votes were bogus. Home demolitions, denial of basic rights of residence, denial of rights of worship and movement, and outright military assaults on the “city of peace” belie a culture of impunity and disregard for International law that has been allowed to grow. Leaders of Western, Arab, and Islamic world meanwhile oscillate between outright facilitation of the atrocities to collaboration to indifference (and I am not sure those are distinct or meaningful categories).
