Well, Nobel Was the Inventor of Dynamite, After All
Chris Floyd
October 9, 2009 – Sometimes you run across a story that defies all comment, rational analysis — even parody. This is one of those times: In Surprise, Nobel Peace Prize to Obama for Diplomacy (NYT). To give a peace prize to the commander-in-chief of a war machine now churning its way through the populations of three countries (Iraq/Af-Pak), with innumerable black ops, lightning raids and drone shots on the side …. to a man who even as we speak is deciding just how he wants to kill even more civilians in Afghanistan and Pakistan … a man who has enthusiastically embraced as “an extraordinary achievement” one of the most heinous and barbaric acts of military aggression since Hitler rolled across the border into Poland … a man who blusters about leaving “all options on the table,” including the use of mass-murdering nuclear weapons, to bully other nations into compliance with American wishes … to give a peace prize to such a man, while all over the world, there are men and women who have devoted their entire lives to non-violence and reconciliation, many of them suffering imprisonment, torture and ruin for their efforts … well, like I said, it’s beyond words…

Taliban suggest “Nobel violence prize” for Obama
Reuters
October 9, 2009 – Afghanistan’s Taliban mocked the award of a Nobel Peace Prize to U.S. President Barack Obama on Friday, saying he should get a Nobel prize for violence instead. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said it was absurd to give a peace award to a man who had sent 21,000 extra troops to Afghanistan to escalate a war. “The Nobel prize for peace? Obama should have won the ‘Nobel Prize for escalating violence and killing civilians’,” he told Reuters by telephone from an undisclosed location. “When Obama replaced President Bush, the Afghan people thought that he would not follow in Bush’s footsteps. Unfortunately, Obama actually even went one step further.”…

Massive expansions of US-NATO “counterinsurgency” in Afghanistan
McChrystal demands bloodshed
by Larry Chin
October 9, 2009 – US and NATO commander Stanley A. McChrystal is demanding a massive expansion of “counterinsurgency” operations in Afghanistan that, according to classified documents, would require 500 thousand troops over the next five years. While bellicose new calls for the Obama administration and NATO to exponentially deepen the “war on terrorism” are being repeated endlessly, McChrystal and his own horrific crimes have received scant notice in the corporate propaganda media…

Audacity in Norway
Kim Petersen
October 9, 2009 – The Norwegian Nobel Committee has seen fit to award a peace prize to a man less than a year into elected presidential office in the United States. So what are Barack Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize credentials? Obama is a man who has yet to shut down a global gulag, who has yet to end the warring in Iraq, who has yet to oversee the return of the elected president of Haiti (deposed by US, Canadian, and French forces), who stands unflinching on the coup d’etat in Honduras, who runs cover for Israeli massacres of Palestinians and Israeli violations of the Geneva Conventions (i.e., supporting war crimes), who seeks to proliferate military bases in Columbia, who has ramped up the killing in Afghanistan, and who has overseen the spillover of war into Pakistan. Is this the criteria that is deserving of a Nobel Peace Prize?…

Al-Walajah, a symbol of Israeli ethnic cleansing
Hasan Abu Nimah
October 9, 2009 – While American officials continue to claim that the mission of US Middle East Envoy George Mitchell is by no means over, and that he will still pursue his efforts to convince the Israeli government to agree to some sort of settlement freeze, Israeli plans for further colonization of Palestinian land continue undisturbed. The latest Israeli plans call for the destruction of the West Bank village of al-Walajah for the second time in six decades. According to Israeli press reports, Israel is planning a massive new settlement in the vicinity of Jerusalem, on land owned by Palestinians of al-Walajah. The project, expected to be approved by the Israeli ministry of the Interior, could become the single most populous settlement built in the occupied Palestinian territories since 1967 according to the Israeli daily Maariv. The project plans prepared by the ministry of the Interior and the Jerusalem municipality call for 14,000 housing units for 40,000 settlers on 3,000 dunums of land which would require the demolition of al-Walajah residents’ homes, according to the paper…

Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize
Glenn Greenwald
October 9, 2009 – When I saw this morning’s top New York Times headline — “Barack Obama Wins Nobel Peace Prize” — I had the same immediate reaction which I’m certain many others had: this was some kind of bizarre Onion gag that got accidentally transposed onto the wrong website, that it was just some sort of strange joke someone was playing. Upon further reflection, that isn’t all that far from the reaction I still have. And I say that despite my belief that — as critical as I’ve been of the Obama presidency regarding civil liberties and Terrorism — foreign affairs is actually one area where he’s shown genuine potential for some constructive “change” and has, on occasion, merited real praise for taking steps in the general “peace” direction which this Prize is meant to honor…

Le Pissoir…
Layla Anwar, An Arab Woman Blues
October 9, 2009 – … I am past 40 and have just about seen it all… No, have seen it all. I have seen you pouring beer in your shoes and drinking from them saying — cheers. I have seen you soaking yourself once a fortnight in a bath, leaving grime and grease behind, all the while complaining how dirty we are… I have seen you not recognizing a geographical location on a map… I have seen you, farting higher than your asses, desperately trying to play Glubb Pasha again… I have seen your sun stroked shrimp colored men and women…talking down to the “native” teaching him/her… I have seen your plum in the ass/arse accent disappear with a few drinks… I have seen you… I, the incognito Iraqi woman, have seen you…

Israeli massacre crimes not easily forgotten, despite the PA
Eva Bartlett, In Gaza
October 9, 2009 – Abbas and the PA…what to say? Palestinians in Gaza made it through the massacre, minus 1500, only to learn of the extent of the PA collaboration with Israel… There has been much good coverage and analysis [outside of corporate media] of the PA decision to again fail the people, this time in the most brazen and disgusting of ways, by not endorsing the Goldstone report. Instead, I’ll just add my name to the list of those utterly repulsed, though not entirely surprised, by this failure to push for justice. While not Palestinian, I saw and lived the Israeli massacre of Gaza, and every day see its repercussions, in the shattered families, shattered streets, shattered economy, shattered hopes…

Arabs & Muslims versus Nobel Peace Prize
Layla Anwar, An Arab Woman Blues
October 9, 2009 – … Palestine : “Obama has a long way to go still and lots of work to do before he can deserve a reward,” “Obama only made promises and did not contribute any substance to world peace. And he has not done anything to ensure justice for the sake of Arab and Muslim causes.” – Iraq : “He doesn’t deserve this prize. All these problems — Iraq, Afghanistan — have not been solved…The man of ‘change’ hasn’t changed anything yet.” – Pakistan : “an embarrassing joke.” – Afghanistan : “The Nobel prize for peace? Obama should have won ‘the Nobel Prize for escalating violence and killing civilians’.”..

Palestinians barred from Old City
Aljazeera.net
October 9, 2009 – Israeli police have barred Palestinians protesting in defence of the al-Aqsa mosque compound from gaining access to Jerusalem’s Old City. Friday’s increased restrictions on the mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem follow a series of clashes that started late last month. Men under the age of 50 have been prevented from accessing the mosque for the past six days. Several hundred Palestinians, denied entry to the mosque, performed Friday prayers just outside the gates of the Old City as the heavily armed Israeli police deployed extra troops…

Lawyer Blasts “Congressional Depravity” On Guantánamo
Andy Worthington
October 9, 2009 – In a recent article, “On Guantánamo, Lawmakers Reveal They Are Still Dick Cheney’s Pawns,” I spelled out my despair and disgust at lawmakers from both parties (their names can be found here, here and here), who, since May, have voted for legislation severely curtailing President Obama’s ability to close the prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba by his self-imposed deadline of January 22, 2010, and who, as a result, have sent just one resounding message to the American people and the wider world: the ghost of Dick Cheney still stalks the corridors of power…

Depraved, Obscene Absurdities
Arthur Silber
October 9, 2009 – Almost no one will acknowledge the single, fundamental truth about Barack Obama, the truth of greatest and most terrifying consequence: Barack Obama is a war criminal. Many facts overwhelmingly and conclusively compel this judgment, and no other. Not because I say so, but because an honest application of the relevant language of international law, as well as of the Nuremberg Principles, necessitates the conclusion… Yet, as I’ve discussed in numerous essays, almost all Americans and much of the world (at least, the elite establishment of the world, i.e., the ruling class) are engaged in a monumental exercise of denial and avoidance. This damnable business has gone on for centuries, to be sure, but it has gathered terrible force in the last several decades…

Tony Blair branded ‘war criminal’ after Iraq memorial service
James Sturcke
October 9, 2009 – Tony Blair was branded a “war criminal” today by the father of a soldier killed in the Iraq war after a memorial service to honour the dead at which the Archbishop of Canterbury criticised “policy makers” for failing to consider the cost of the conflict. Rowan Williams, who has previously described the decisions that led to the war as “flawed”, praised the “patient and consistent” efforts of troops on the ground. But he used his address at the national service of remembrance in St Paul’s cathedral to remind his audience that the conflict, which claimed the lives of 179 British service personnel, remained highly controversial…

PCHR – Palestinian Centre for Human Rights
October 9, 2009 – Israeli violations of international law and humanitarian law in the OPT continued during the reporting period (01 – 07 October 2009): Shooting: During the reporting period, a Palestinian child and an Israeli human rights defender were wounded by IOF gunfire in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank respectively. In the Gaza Strip, on 04 October 2009, IOF troops positioned at the border between the Gaza Strip and Israel to the northwest of Beit Lahia town in the northern Gaza Strip fired at a Palestinian child wounding his seriously with a bullet to the neck. In the West Bank, IOF used force against peaceful demonstrations organized by Palestinian civilians and international and Israeli human rights defenders in protest to the construction of the Annexation Wall in the West Bank. Code Yellow
The selling-out of the antiwar movement
Justin Raimondo
October 9, 2009 – …The defection of Medea Benjamin comes at a plastic moment in the evolution of this administration’s venture into the foreign policy realm: just when we need antiwar activism the most, some “leaders” are calling it quits. The irony is that she’s doing precisely the opposite of what she said she’d do if Kerry had been elected President. Where is the “pressure” to get out of Afghanistan (and Iraq) being exerted on the part of her organization? Indeed, it looks like the pressure is traveling in the other direction, from the Obama-ites to Medea Benjamin & Co. Somehow, it always seems to work out that way – that’s why they call it selling out. This sea-change in Code Pink’s view of the Afghan war calls for a more formal recognition of their new perspective. Perhaps a name-change: I propose “Code Yellow” – because a more brazen act of political cowardice hasn’t been seen in quite some time…

Impunity wins
Amira Howeidy
October 9, 2009 – On 2 October, a week before the UN Human Rights Council was scheduled to vote on the Gaza war crimes report, Geneva-based Palestinian human rights activist Rania Madi knew something was wrong. She received a tip off from sources in the council about US and Israeli plans to defer the vote to March 2010. In response she intensified her lobbying and voiced concern at the possibility. “The Palestinian delegation in Geneva told me not to worry, that everything was going fine,” she told Al-Ahram Weekly in a telephone interview from Brussels. International, Palestinian, Israeli and Arab human rights activists, many of whom, including members of Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, flew to Geneva for the event, had spent weeks planning their actions following the would-be vote, formulating “follow up mechanisms” to be put in place after the expected endorsement of a report that accuses Israel and Hamas of “possibly” committing war crimes and crimes against humanity during Israel’s war on Gaza last January….

As U.S. Continues Afghan, Iraq Occupations and Quashes Accountability for Gaza Assault, Critics Decry Awarding of Nobel Peace Prize to Obama
Democracy Now!
October 9, 2009 – President Obama has been awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize, less than nine months after taking office. The award comes despite Obama’s continuation of the Iraq war and escalation of the US occupation of Afghanistan. From boycotts to Bilin: An interview with Jonathan Cook
Jeff Gore
October 9, 2009 – …JG: How important do you think the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement is at this stage in the conflict? JC: It is a hugely important development in the struggle for Palestinian self-determination. Certainly I think its moment has arrived. This is a Palestinian grassroots initiative that cannot be bought off by Israel in the way the Fatah leadership was bought off by Oslo. It empowers Palestinians by allowing them to set the scope and agenda of their struggle, such as by demanding that artists respect their call not to perform in Israel. It offers a practical way for people outside the region to show solidarity with the Palestinian struggle by heeding that call and thinking creatively about how to implement BDS in their own countries. In the controversy and debate it generates it offers a chance to engage and educate those who are at the moment only vaguely aware that there might be problem here. And if BDS gains more momentum, it could really harm the Israeli economy. In fact, in my view there is no way to end the occupation unless Israelis are made to see that they will pay a heavy price for its continuance. The US could do that overnight by withdrawing its huge subsidies to Israel. I’m not holding my breath. Instead BDS gives all of us the power to show Israel that the occupation does not pay…

EU backs UN Gaza report, disappointing Israel
AFP
October 9, 2009 — The European Union backed on Thursday a contentious UN report blasting Israel’s military offensive in Gaza, praising its chief author and saying the document is “worthy of consideration.” Israel immediately expressed disappointment at the support from Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt — whose country holds the EU presidency — and said it showed that Bildt had either not read the report or misunderstood it…

Barack Obama’s Nobel prize greeted with cynicism and surprise
# Jon Boone in Kabul and Rory McCarthy in Jerusalem
October 9, 2009 – For the crowd gathered for a second day of festivities at one of the Afghan capital’s garish wedding halls this afternoon there was widespread cynicism at the news of Obama’s Nobel win. “I don’t know how he can get this prize,” said Najeeb, a 30-year-old shopkeeper attending a friend’s wedding party. “Maybe it’s been awarded for all the houses they are bombing, or perhaps it’s for all his soldiers that are dying in Afghanistan and Iraq.”…
