Classified McChrystal Report: 500,000 Troops Will Be Required Over Five Years in Afghanistan
Tom Andrews
September 24, 2009 – Embedded in General Stanley McChrystal’s classified assessment of the war in Afghanistan is his conclusion that a successful counterinsurgency strategy will require 500,000 troops over five years. This bombshell was dropped by NBC reporter Andrea Mitchell on MSNBC’s Morning Joe on Wednesday: “The numbers are really pretty horrifying. What they say, embedded in this report by McChrystal, is they would need 500,000 troops – boots on the ground – and five years to do the job. No one expects that the Afghan Army could step up to that. Are we gonna put even half that of U.S. troops there, and NATO forces? No way.” [Morning Joe, September 23, 2009]…

At UN general assembly, Obama urges international support for US wars
By Tom Eley
September 24, 2009 – On Wednesday, President Barack Obama used his first address to the United Nations General Assembly to defend US wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and reiterate the American right to act unilaterally. At the same time, Obama implicitly appealed to foreign capitals to subordinate themselves to US geostrategic objectives… Later in the speech, Obama declared that the US would “permit no safe-haven for al Qaeda to launch attacks from Afghanistan or any other nation,” reasserting the US right to violate the sovereignty of any state in pursuit of whomever Washington declares to be terrorists…

By Mel Frykberg
September 24, 2009 – Eight children between the ages of 10 and 17 were arrested and detained by Israeli soldiers during military raids Monday night and Tuesday morning in the northern West Bank cities Nablus and Qalqilia. Defence for Children International (DCI) Palestine has released a statement that the number of children detained in Israeli jails and temporary Israeli army detention centres this year has risen by 17.5 percent compared with 2008. “The average number of Palestinian children held in Israeli detention in 2009 remains high, at 375 per month compared with an average of 319 in 2008,” says DCI.”Disturbingly, 39 young children between the ages of 12 and 15 were detained in August 2009. U.S., NATO Poised For Most Massive War In Afghanistan’s History
Rick Rozoff
September 24, 2009 – Over the past week U.S. newspapers and television networks have been abuzz with reports that Washington and its NATO allies are planning an unprecedented increase of troops for the war in Afghanistan, even in addition to the 17,000 new American and several thousand NATO forces that have been committed to the war so far this year. The number, based on as yet unsubstantiated reports of what U.S. and NATO commander Stanley McChrystal and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Michael Mullen have demanded of the White House, range from 10,000 to 45,000…

Dark Side of the Moon.
Layla Anwar, An Arab Woman Blues
September 24, 2009 – The other day, I had an interesting conversation with a friend about the war on “blue gold” i.e WATER. This will be the next title for another round of conflicts in this region. A few days ago, Turkey “generously” offered Iraq a bit of blue gold from the Euphrates, in view of the horrible drought and scary low levels of water left in Iraqi rivers. I must add, Turkey had been building since 2003, illegal dams on the Euphrates, stocking the water, thus squeezing Iraq, leaving her begging for more…

Learning about Zionism the Goldstone Way
Tali Shapiro
September 24, 2009 – I waited a bit to have a complete picture of Ha’aretz (”the elite left”) coverage of the Goldstone lead UN report on Gaza. Israeli citizens could have learned something about the government and themselves through this report. Instead, I learn, yet again, how corrupted the media, the government and the people are, by the Zionist mythos. The first Ha’aretz article (and all the subsequent articles that weren’t written by Amira Hass or Gideon Levy) about the report plays on the myth that both sides of this “conflict” (a.k.a. “occupation”) are on equal footing: “UN probe: Israel, Palestinians both guilty of Gaza war crimes” This title is, of course, misleading, as anyone who’s taken the time to read just the table of contents of the report, can see a clear ratio that puts Israel to shame. But the sillies don’t stop there; Not only is the title misleading, when reporting about the mission, it’s misleading in characterization of the article it heads! …

Obama gives Israel carte blanche on settlement construction
By Chris Marsden
September 24, 2009 – Tuesday’s meeting in New York between Barack Obama, Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas was widely regarded as little more than a photo opportunity before it began, as well as something of a political embarrassment for the US president. It was both these things. But it also confirmed the degree to which the Obama administration is prepared to back Netanyahu’s settlement construction programme on the West Bank and East Jerusalem and to dictate terms to the Palestinians…

Iraqi ‘killed in UK revenge attack’
Aljazeera.net
September 24, 2009 – The father of an Iraqi receptionist who died in the custody of British troops in the southern Iraqi city of Basra has said British soldiers laughed as they beat his son to death. Daoud Mousa, 63, told the London hearing on Wednesday that detainees held with his son Baha, 26, had described to him in detail “how violently, how cruelly,” they had been treated by British soldiers. “My son was tortured to death in front of his colleagues,” Mousa, a former senior police officer, told the inquiry in a written statement. “It is clear that the soldiers responsible gained sadistic pleasure by laughing continually while my son was being abused,” the statement said….

Obama will bypass Congress to detain suspects indefinitely
By John Byrne
September 24, 2009 – President Barack Obama has quietly decided to bypass Congress and allow the indefinite detention of terrorist suspects without charges. The move, which was controversial when the idea was first floated in The Washington Post in May, has sparked serious concern among civil liberties advocates. Such a decision allows the president to unilaterally hold “combatants” without habeas corpus — a legal term literally meaning “you shall have the body” — which forces prosecutors to charge a suspect with a crime to justify the suspect’s detention…

How Much Repression Will Hillary Clinton Support in Honduras?
Mark Weisbrot
September 24, 2009 – Now that President Zelaya has returned to Honduras, the coup government – after first denying that he was there – has unleashed a wave of repression to prevent people from gathering support for their elected president. This is how U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton described the first phase of this new repression last night in a press conference: “I think that the government imposed a curfew, we just learned, to try to get people off the streets so that there couldn’t be unforeseen developments.” But the developments that this dictatorship is trying to repress are very much foreseen. A completely peaceful crowd of thousands surrounded the Brazilian embassy in Tegucigalpa, where Zelaya has taken refuge, to greet their president…

Netanyahu outmanoeuvres Obama?
By Mark Levine
September 24, 2009 – It lasted only for a moment, but in that brief instant their faces said it all. On stage right sat Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, grinning. In the middle was Barack Obama, the US president, smiling as camera flashes went off. On stage left sat Mahmoud Abbas, the president of the Palestinian Authority (PA), looking sullen and abandoned, wondering why he was even there. When originally announced, this week’s meeting between the three leaders was intended to showcase at least a modicum of substantive progress in moving Israelis and Palestinians back to the negotiating table under America’s aegis. But Israel’s steadfast refusal to any settlement freeze meant that no progress would be forthcoming at the “mini-summit”…

US troops out of Afghanistan
Bill Van Auken
September 24, 2009 – …The Obama administration is planning to confront the catastrophe that imperialism has inflicted upon Afghanistan by escalating the killing and destruction. And, no matter which of the plans supposedly being debated in the White House is adopted, this escalation will be accompanied by a widening US war in Pakistan, carrying with it the threat of destabilizing the entire region and unleashing a far bloodier conflagration. The price for this policy will be paid, in the first instance, with the lives of Afghan and Pakistani civilians…

Deception over Lockerbie
Maidhc Ó Cathail
September 24, 2009 – The scenes of flag-waving Libyans welcoming home Abdel Baset al-Megrahi, the man known as the Lockerbie bomber, further discredited Muslims in the minds of many. For those whose knowledge of the story is derived mainly from TV news, it appeared to be a callous celebration of mass murder, lending credence to the belief that “Islam” and “terrorism” are virtually synonymous. A closer look at the facts surrounding the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103, however, reveals a pattern of deception by those who have most to gain from making Muslims look bad…

Conditions deteriorate for trapped Saada IDPs
IRIN news
September 24, 2009 – The humanitarian situation in Saada Governorate, northern Yemen, is “alarming”, according to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR). The latest round of clashes between government troops and Houthi-led Shia rebels began on 12 August and was continuing despite a government-declared ceasefire on 20 September. IDPs [internally displaced persons] stranded in Saada city and the northern Baqim area in Saada Governorate (55km northwest of Saada City and 20km from Saudi border) face a real crisis. Over the past few weeks most IDPs have been inaccessible to aid workers because of the fighting which has made roads impassable, according to UNHCR spokesperson Laure Chedrawi…

Obama: I am against the murder of innocents but for immunity for the murderers
Gabriel Ash
September 24, 2009 – … This is becoming the Obama doctrine, talk like a lion, walk like a rat. What is shocking about the latest U.S. president is not that he lies. U.S. Presidents lie. It’s their job. Bush lied. He lied about nuclear weapons in Iraq as well as about sundry other small and large matters. But in another sense he was as honest as as a straight arrow. He was a nasty and mean right-wing fanatic, and this is exactly how he came across. Obama is not a nasty and mean right-wing fanatic. He is merely the diligent and responsible steward of the empire, its upper class and their interests…

Tikrit under curfew after prison break
Reuters
September 24, 2009 – Iraqi authorities imposed a vehicle ban and a curfew in a city north of Baghdad on Thursday after more than a dozen suspected al Qaeda militants climbed through a ventilation duct and broke free from jail. Police officials said security forces were scouring the city of Tikrit, 150 km (95 miles) north of Baghdad, for the fugitive prisoners, some of whom had been sentenced to death for working with Sunni Islamist group al Qaeda. The escape, in which at least one local official said police may have played a role, raises additional questions about Iraq’s security forces and its penitentiary system as U.S. troops prepare to withdraw from the country by the end of 2011…

Position Paper
PCHR has Reservations about Regulations Adopted in the Context of Ongoing Political Fragmentation
PCHR – Palestinian Centre for Human Rights
September 24, 2009 – … Affirming its reservations about all the regulations promulgated by the two parties to the crisis in Gaza and the West Bank, PCHR reiterates that there is no alternative to the national dialogue which is the only choice for the resolution of the Palestinian internal crisis, termination of the ongoing fragmentation, and returning legitimacy to PNA institutions, including executive; legislative and judicial powers. Until national dialogue is achieved, PCHR demands that the two parties to the crisis annul all regulations made and refrain from adopting new regulations that deepen fragmentation and serve only narrow factional objectives. Further, PCHR demands that the issue of regulations made during the fragmentation be added to the national dialogue program. They must be annulled or reviewed by a reconvened, legitimate, legislature.
