Israel’s thirst for the Nile’s water
Adib Kawar
September 22, 2009 – What is taking place regarding the Nile’s water is not a simple matter… Without exaggeration… It is as important as war itself… Lieberman, the foreign minister of the wrathful Zionist entity, is taking a tour around African countries that are connected with the Nile… and before time elapses, and before those who are in charge of us take the initiative to beg peace from Zionists, they have to thoroughly read what is taking place. All Arab nationalist forces have to read what is taking place… Because it only concerns the resistance… It is the starting point for controlling the entire region and its resources… It is a water war… We know the historic motto of the “state of the Jews”… From the Nile to the Euphrates… or from the Euphrates the Nile… Egypt’s great river as said in the Bible… The motto means water… water… And today it means gas and oil too…

Court Allows Return Of Guantánamo Prisoners To Torture
ANDY WORTHINGTON
September 22, 2009 – As rumors swirl, suggesting that a number of the remaining 13 Uighur prisoners in Guantánamo (Muslims from China’s Xinjiang province) may soon be relocating to the tiny Pacific island state of Palau, a court case relating to nine of these men threatens to hurl a number of other prisoners in Guantánamo, who have also been cleared for release, into a new maelstrom of uncertainty regarding their future, by removing long-standing injunctions preventing their return to countries where they face the risk of torture, or removing other requirements that, in anticipation of a transfer, the government provides their lawyers with 30 days’ warning…

Seven Million Hondurans Under House Arrest as Micheletti Writes of “Democracy”
Al Giordano
September 22, 2009 – The Honduran coup regime’s 26-hour martial curfew upon the entire country effectively places 7.5 million Honduran citizens – men, women, children and elders – under house arrest. They are prohibited from going to work, to the store, or to walk down the street to visit a neighbor. Anybody on the street is subject to arrest, for violation of the curfew. If this happened to you, what would you call it?…

CIA Experiments on U.S. Soldiers Linked to Torture Program
By Jeffrey Kaye
September 22, 2009 – A number of new articles have been published recently that have highlighted evidence of illegal human experimentation on U.S.-held “terrorism” prisoners undergoing torture. These articles followed the release of a “white paper” by Physicians for Human Rights [PHR], Aiding Torture: Health Professionals’ Ethics and Human Rights Violations Demonstrated in the May 2004 Inspector General’s Report. This report looks at those recent charges, and reveals that experiments by a CIA researcher on human subjects undergoing SERE training went unreported in the legal memos the Bush administration drafted to approve their torture program. It will also connect major military and intelligence figures to the SERE experiments, and tie some of them to major science and “experimental” directorates at the CIA and Special Operations Command…

Former CIA Inspector General Confirms BBC Torture Report
BBC News
September 22, 2009 – The former CIA inspector general, John Helgerson, has confirmed that the Bush administration authorised the CIA to use a harsh interrogation method on terror suspect Abu Zubaydah before written legal clearance was given. This is politically explosive, because the Bush administration has always claimed that it used harsh interrogation techniques such as waterboarding only after government lawyers had determined they did not amount to torture…

US commander pushes for rapid escalation of Afghanistan war
By Bill Van Auken
September 22, 2009 – With the release of a declassified version of Gen. Stanley McChrystal’s recommendations for a change of course in Afghanistan, the Pentagon command is pushing President Barack Obama to quickly approve another major escalation of the US-led war. The report was first made public Monday on the Web site of the Washington Post, which was leaked the document and then reached an agreement with the Pentagon to post a version from which key passages on US strategy were redacted…

Obama administration shields CIA torturers
Tom Eley
September 22, 2009 – In response to a public campaign by the CIA, the Obama administration has decided to further scale back an already narrow investigation of Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) torture during the Bush years that was announced last month by Attorney General Eric Holder. In announcing the probe, Holder had made clear that it would be limited to CIA agents whose torture of alleged terrorists went beyond the bounds laid down by Bush administration directives. It would target neither the Justice Department lawyers who drew up findings providing a pseudo-legal justification for waterboarding, hanging prisoners from walls, placing them in boxes for hours on end, and similar crimes, nor the top Bush administration officials who ordered and oversaw such practices…

“Free yourselves from the shackles of Israeli pressure”, the man said.
Stuart Littlewood
September 22, 2009 – …When the former mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, interviewed Hamas chief Khaled Meshaal last week he was immediately attacked by Britain’s Foreign Office Minister, Ivan Lewis. Lewis said: “It is particularly regrettable that he [Livingstone] learned the wrong lessons from history by handing a propaganda coup to the leader of a terrorist organisation. Hamas has not only breached international law by firing rockets at civilian populations in Israel but continues to violate the human rights of Palestinians in Gaza”. Perhaps they aren’t paying attention at the Foreign Office. The only people breaching international law in the Holy Land and violating the rights of Palestinians are the lawless Israelis. As the MP for Bury South, near Manchester, and a former vice-chairman of Labour Friends of Israel, Lewis voted enthusiastically for the Iraq war and against any investigation…Lewis claims Livingstone’s conversation with Meshaal, published in the New Statesman, was a propaganda coup for Hamas. Actually the interview was a victory for truth and common sense. The Hamas chief was able to speak openly and, for once, be heard in the British media. One of the functions of a Zionist stooge is to condemn remarks by anyone they brand a terrorist or belonging to a terrorist organisation…

Iraq snapshot – Tuesday, September 22, 2009
The Common Ills
September 22, 2009 – …On the tensions between Syria and Iraq, AP reports Nouri’s created “a backlash over a bitter fight he picked with Syria” — a backlash within the Iraqi government. Nouri insists that Ba’athist in Syria (a secular group) teamed up with al Qaeda in Mesopotamia (a fundamentalist group) to carry ou the bombings of Bloody Wednesday aka Black Wednesday on August 19th. Nouri has been fortunate in that the Western press has largely been happy to spin for him and indicate that he’s requesting two people be turned over. But it’s not just the US, here’s Robert Fisk (Independent of London) reporting earlier this month, “Iraq’s Prime Minister, Nouri al-Maliki, demands an international tribunal because Syria won’t hand over a couple of Iraqi Baathists whom he blames for the suicide bombing deaths of at least 100 civilians in Baghdad.” A couple? Nouri’s asking Syria to hand over 179 people. And because of the August 19th bombings? No. Nouri was demanding those 179 people be turned over to Iraq in his face-to-face August 18th meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. A day before the bombings….

Work, Shelter and Food Top Needs of Iraq’s Internally Displaced
IOM
September 22, 2009 – Shelter, food and employment remain the most pressing needs of most of the 1.6 million people forced to flee their homes three and half years since the 2006 bombing of the Samarra mosque in Iraq that triggered one of the worst displacement crises in recent times. Releasing its bi-annual profiles of internal displacement throughout Iraq’s 18 governorates today, IOM has found that across the board, the three issues remain the most common concerns of nearly 224,000 internally displaced (IDP) families that it has assessed so far…

They’re Out to Get Us! – Israel Distorts the World
Alan Sabrosky
September 22, 2009 – …It is worth remembering that the onslaught against Gaza was just the most recent incident in a long and ill-starred tale of Israeli brutality, against Palestinians and the Lebanon especially. In 2002, for instance, the ravaging of the West Bank refugee camps — most notably Jenin — was the Gaza City of its day, with fewer Palestinian casualties and even more destruction. Then as now, Israel refused to allow a UN investigation; and it had complete control of the borders. It was then that an Israeli cabinet minister fended off the investigation by saying “They’re out to get us!” — the perennial cry of the truly guilty throughout history. The perpetual Israeli reliance on denial and invective, and the oft-expressed belief that everyone is prejudiced against them, is fascinating. I suppose the uncomfortable reality that Zionism (not Judaism) really is racism — the UN got that right the first time, and should not have backed off it — may account for some of it…

Europeans Don’t Follow Their Leader
The Afghan Folly
By TARIQ ALI
September 22, 2009 – Italian, British and German soldiers are being returned from Afghanistan to their countries in coffins. Why? Through no fault of their own but because politicians of centre-right/centre-left despatched them to fight an imperial war on behalf of Washington. In Italy, to its eternal shame, Rifondazione voted to continue the Italian presence in the Hindu Kush. Die Linke in Germany was far more principled, in a country where 80 percent are not in favor, albeit ignored by mainstream politicians. In Britain and Italy, too, there are large sections of the population opposed to the war. Their voices remain unheard in the corridors of power: Brown and Berlusconi have become blood-brothers. When European politicians justify the slaughter of Afghans and the death of their own soldiers by mouthing mantras to the effect that this is necessary to safeguard Italian/German/British citizens, they speak falsely and the lies are deliberate for they have no other answer. Nor has Washington..

Gaza: laughter and tragedy: Eid day 1
Eva Bartlett, In Gaza
September 22, 2009 – The streets are completely renewed with energy, filled with life and people no longer fasting. The sense of vitality, exuberance, is strangely similar to that of immediately post-massacre. On the first of three days of Eid, children are the most prominent sight, glittering and colourful in flash new clothes (even though in the end they are the poor-quality items that come through the tunnels… they are new, at least)…

How Israel silenced its Gaza war protesters
By Akiva Eldar, Haaretz Correspondent
September 22, 2009 – A new report from Adalah shows how the courts and police attempted to stamp out opposition to Operation Cast Lead “This is a time of war, and every incident harms the people’s morale.” This was not a sentence in a right-wing journal, but rather a statement by an Israel Police representative during Operation Cast Lead seeking to persuade the Tel Aviv District Court to block anti-war protesters from the city. Around the same time, in a Haifa Magistrate’s Court hearing on extending the remand of minors, Judge Moshe Gilad stated: “Anyone who enables remarks denouncing the state and backing its enemies, even as they rain missiles upon its citizens, must obey its laws, and certainly is prohibited from attacking police who come to impose order. It is similar to a person spitting in the well from which he drinks.”…

Video: Israelis’ views on Obama and the peace process
AlJazeeraEnglish
September 22, 2009 – Barack Obama, the US president, is getting ready to host Israeli and Palestinian leaders for a meeting he hopes might get peace talks started again. But Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, has made his position clear, saying he will defend settlement expansion, which is the big sticking point. Al Jazeera’s Clayton Swisher has been out on the streets of Jerusalem to find out what Israelis think about Obama and his plans…

Two NATO solders killed in Afghanistan
AFP
September 22, 2009 — Two NATO soldiers, one of them from the United States, have been killed in southern Afghanistan, the military said Tuesday. The soldiers died in separate incidents on Monday involving improvised explosive devices, or IEDs, the scourge of an increasingly deadly effort to wipe out insurgents, the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said…

Brazilian Parliament Recommends Freezing Out Israelis from Third Largest Export Market
Global BDS Movement
September 22, 2009 – “This decision is an enormous blow for Israel’s economy and foreign relations”, says Jamal Juma’ of the Stop the Wall Campaign. The Brazilian Parliamentary Commission on Foreign Relations and National Defense has recommended that the parliament should not ratify the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Mercosur and the State of Israel until “Israel accepts the creation of the Palestinian state on the 1967 borders”. This decision is an explicit act of pressure on the Israeli government to comply with international law, and a rejection of years of incessant Israeli lobbying, pressuring for a vote to ratify the agreement…

Settlements strain US-Israel ties
Aljazeera.net
September 22, 2009 – When Barack Obama was campaigning to be the US president in late 2008, he said that achieving a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict would become a focus of his administration if elected. Shortly after taking office, he called on Israel to stop building settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. About 500,000 Jews live in settlement blocs and smaller outposts built in the West Bank and Arab East Jerusalem, territory captured by Israel in the 1967 Six Day War…

Military Resistance [GI Spc] 7I8: The Perfect Day [ 21 September 2009 ]
Thomas F. Barton
It is obvious that many soldiers are simply pushed past the breaking point with no end in sight and nothing to look forward to but another year in the desert. To work 12 hours a day in garrison, and to spend 30-60 days of your precious “dwell time” year home at (training) leaves you little left in the bank physically or emotionally when it comes time to deploy. Many times soldiers who are deployed see their work, their sacrifice and their being away from home as a total waste — a waste of money, of lives and of time away from their family. They return home after a year, many having lost a comrade or two with nothing to show for their year in a counterinsurgency gone quiet (as in Iraq).

Military Resistance 7I7: Gooodbye GI Special [ 20 September 2009 ]
Thomas F. Barton
In April 2003, GI Special was the best name for a new publication that could be thought of. Not good enough anymore. Military resistance to the government’s wars of occupation is here, now, and not limited to the Army, as implied by the term “GI”. The resistance inside the armed forces and among veterans of today’s Imperial wars is increasing in numbers and dedication to the cause.
