Memo From the Wretched: Enough About Nonviolence
by Steven Salaita
September 9, 2009 – …These calls for Palestinian nonviolence pretend to be ethically disinterested, but they are entangled with troublesome politics that are fundamentally destructive and undemocratic. For instance, they are often accompanied by appeals to avoid criticism of Zionism (Norman Finkelstein), to eschew effective nonviolent tactics such as boycott and divestment (Michael Lerner), and to reject counterproductive things like binationalism and right of return (Finkelstein and Lerner). In other words, the Palestinians should reject violence, and while they’re at it go ahead and give up all of their legal entitlements and decolonial aspirations…The Palestinians, anyway, are far too evolved to listen to those who would use their courage and diligence to dispossess them of their right to active resistance. Violent or nonviolent, their choice of resistance isn’t the business of liberal armchair ethicists. Those ethicists are fond of claiming that if the Palestinians resisted nonviolently they would have already achieved their liberation. This claim is factually untrue…

Massacre in Kunduz bares real nature of Afghanistan war
Statement by the Socialist Equality Party
September 9, 2009 – An air strike ordered by the German army at the end of last week has resulted in one of the worst massacres in the history of the eight-year-old NATO war in Afghanistan. It is now clear that in the course of Thursday night at least 125 persons were killed in the attack, which had been ordered by the military commander of the German “Provincial Reconstruction Team” (PRT) in Kunduz, Colonel Georg Klein. In addition to armed fighters, the attack wiped out many inhabitants of neighbouring villages. The incident was one of the bloodiest air strikes since US forces invaded the country in the autumn of 2001…

Stop Israeli involvement in the repression of the people in Honduras and Latin America
Palestinian Grassroots Anti-Apartheid Wall Campaign
September 9, 2009 – As Palestinian Grassroots Anti-Apartheid Wall Campaign we raise our voice and join with all those that today are protesting the coup in Honduras, the dictatorship and repression by Micheletti’s regime. As Palestinians, we know that we and the Honduran people are part of the same struggle. We are well aware that this crime would not have been planned and executed without the active support of foreign powers. Many reports indicate not only involvement of US intelligence but Israeli military and intelligence as well. Israel has a long history supporting the repression of the people in Latin America. From the Contras in Nicaragua to the dictatorships in Paraguay, Guatemala and Chile – Israeli weapons, intelligence and training have offered crucial backing. Today, Colombia is probably the biggest recipient of Israeli arms and training…

UN-backed panel denounces fraud in Afghan election
By Tom Eley
September 9, 2009 – …While the election was undoubtedly characterized by virtually every form of electoral fraud, these arose inevitably from a more fundamental source — that the election was carried out under conditions of military occupation and a neo-colonial counter-insurgency campaign. No candidates opposed to foreign occupation were allowed to participate. The original pretext for the war — to capture Osama bin Laden and other Al Qaeda leaders charged with the September 11 terrorist attacks — has long been abandoned, and the Obama administration has downplayed the Bush administration’s attempt to justify the war as an exercise in spreading democracy. What remains is a dirty colonial war aimed at establishing US dominance over a country that occupies a critical geo-strategic position in oil- and gas-rich Central Asia…

Israel’s war on Gaza killed 252 children, report claims
Israeli human rights agency challenges army’s figures
By Donald Macintyre in Jerusalem
September 9, 2009 – The Israeli official figures seriously underestimated the civilian Palestinian death toll exacted during its onslaught in Gaza early this year, according to painstaking research to be published today. The first detailed casualty figures from an Israeli human rights organisation since the war ended puts the number of children under 16 killed in the offensive at 252 as opposed to the 89 cited by the military. B’Tselem says its fieldworkers gathered death certificates, photos, and testimonies relating to all 252 of the children. B’Tselem, which said it had carried out “months of meticulous investigation and cross-checks with numerous sources” has, unlike the Israel Defence Forces (IDF), made public the names of all those it said were killed in the war..

The Flood of Kabul-Shit
Trigger-Happy in Afghanistan
By RICHARD NEVILLE
September 9, 2009 – …It sometimes seems that the greater the slaughter of civilians, the louder the praise for the mission. This may be due to guilt. Britain’s Gordon Brown: We are in Afghanistan to purge terrorism. Australia’s Kevin Rudd: Our soldiers are building schools. America’s Barack Obama: This is a war of necessity. The Sydney Morning Herald: The mission is to bolster Afghanistan against Al-Qaeda and to support regional stability in Pakistan. Tosh, the lot of it. The war started as an act of revenge on the perpetrators of the 9/11 tragedy and was not authorized by the United Nations. It took two years and a thousand bloody air strikes before UN Resolution 1510 finally granted the invaders an after-the-fact “legitimacy”. Many legal scholars still regard the invasion as illegal under international law. Since the start of Operation Enduring Freedom in October 2001, how many Afghani civilians have been blown away? Take a guess. It’s not widely publicized. Wikipedia puts civilian casualties at “roughly” between 9,000 and 27,000. This does not include the thousands of maimed children. All for what? Why are we there? The Taliban were not responsible for 9/11…

In the wake of the Afghan Election: NATO Intensifies Military Deployments, Carnage
by Rick Rozoff
September 9, 2009 – After NATO pledged 5,000 more troops for the war in Afghanistan at its sixtieth anniversary summit In Strasbourg, France and Kehl, Germany this April, U.S. President Barack Obama hailed the commitment as representing “a strong down payment on the future of our mission in Afghanistan and on the future of NATO.” The Alliance offer was in addition to Obama’s own vow to deploy 21,000 more American forces to the war-wracked nation where the U.S. is waging its longest war since that in Vietnam and NATO is fighting the first ground and first Asian war in its history. A conflict that will enter its ninth calendar year next month. Not, never, willing to acknowledge that the Afghan war is in fact a war,Washington and Brussels from the time of the summit until now have attempted to justify their troop buildups in South Asia as motivated primarily by insuring that the second presidential election in Afghanistan since the joint U.S.-NATO invasion of 2001 proceeded uninterrupted. A ruthless counterinsurgency and bombing campaign was thus portrayed as another war for democracy…

Men With Guns in Kabul and Washington
Norman Solomon
September 8, 2009 – For those who believe in making war, Kabul is a notable work product. After 30 years, the results are in: a devastated city. A stale witticism calls Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai “the mayor of Kabul.” Now, not even. On block after block in the Afghan capital, AK-47s are conspicuous in the hands of men on guard against a near future. Widely seen as corrupt, inept and – with massive election fraud – now illegitimate, Karzai’s government is losing its grip along with its credibility. Meanwhile, a war-stoking mindset is replicating itself at the highest reaches of official Washington – even while polls tell us that the pro-war spin has been losing ground. For the US public, dwindling support for the war in Afghanistan has reached a tipping point. But, as you’ve probably heard, the war must go on.

Militarising Space: The Fallujah fallacy
by Eric Walberg
September 9, 2009 – In April, Air Force Space Command activated a new unit — the 24th Air Force at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas — to keep pace with “the rapid changes in information technology and allow space and cyberspace capabilities to be more accessible to military ground commanders”, according to the Space Command’s top military officer General Robert Kehler. Kehler called the activation “the beginning of what will be a deliberate and focused effort to develop and evolve cyberspace forces and capabilities.” In August, the Pentagon’s Missile Defense Agency (MDA) commenced its 12th annual Space and Missile Defense Conference in Huntsville, Alabama, at the shiny new Von Braun Centre, named after the father of Nazi Germany’s missile project and one of the creators of the US ICBM programme, who along with several German colleagues was sent to Huntsville in 1950 (Operation Paperclip) to work on the first live nuclear ballistic missile tests conducted by the Pentagon…

US actually increasing personnel in Iraq: More contractors, fewer troops
John Byrne, Raw Story
September 9, 2009 – US forces are not withdrawing from Iraq. Well, its soldiers are. But not civilian contractors. Despite President Barack Obama’s pledge to withdraw US troops from the war-torn country, the US is planning to award contracts to protect US installations at a cost to taxpayers that could near $1 billion. In fact, the Multi-National Force-Iraq just awarded $485 million in contracts just last week, while Congress enjoyed its summer recess…

Afghanistan by the Numbers
Measuring a War Gone to Hell
Tom Engelhardt
September 8, 2009 – … History may not simply repeat itself, but there’s good reason to look askance at whatever set of metrics the Obama administration manages to devise. After all, as in the Vietnam years, Obama’s people, too, will be mustering numbers in search of “success”; they, too, will be measuring “progress.” And those numbers — like the Vietnam era body counts — will have to come up from below (with all the attendant pressures). By the time they reach Washington, they are likely to have the best possible patina on them. With the delivery of those new metrics to Congress seemingly imminent, I thought I might offer my own set of Afghan metrics for the worst year of the present war. Think of this as basic math for Americans. (All figures cited below are linked to their sources. If a figure has no link, just click on the nearest previous link.) …

“SURVEILLANCE SOCIETY” POSES THREAT TO PRIVACY AND INDIVIDUAL LIBERTIES
Sherwood Ross
September 8, 2009 – New surveillance technologies increasingly threaten Americans’ civil liberties yet the public seems not to mind the ominous signs of an emerging police state, a law school professor warns. “If we acquiesce in technology’s wonders being utilized to track our every movement, every action, every purchase, every message---because there is benefit to us, as there is, in each of these---who is to blame when the state goes knocking on the neighbor’s door?” asks Larry Starkey, an adjunct professor at the Massachusetts School of Law at Andover. “Who is to blame when the state comes knocking on our own doors?”…

Iran: List of 72 dead protesters published by opposition web site
HomyLafayette
September 9, 2009 – The Norooz news site, close to the Islamic Iran Participation Front, published a list of 72 ‘martyrs who have been identified thus far’ on Friday, September 4. The list has been compiled by the committee set up by Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi to investigate the deaths and arrests following the election. The following is a translation of the article and accompanying list posted by Norooz. To elevate these individuals beyond statistics, I’ve added photos, footage, and additional information in italics when possible. I’ll update this list when more information becomes available…

The Myth of Inevitability–Using Our Emotions Against Us
Peter Chamberlin
September 9, 2009 – The world is awash in news and other daily revelations that all point in the direction of an encroaching police state. The war, the ongoing economic collapse, global epidemics and collapsing environmental systems bombard us from all sides with apparent proof that the end is near and that we are all helpless to avoid it. The world’s richest men have spent a sizeable portion of their vast personal fortunes to convince us that a “new order” is mankind’s only defense against the inevitable. The finest minds available have studied the human psyche, in particular, instincts and reactions, in order to use fear as a way to preempt reason…

Business Seeks Ways Past Political Impasse
By Mel Frykberg
September 9, 2009 – Business between the Palestinian Authority and Israel is growing despite the political impasse over Israel’s refusal to cease illegal settlement building in East Jerusalem and the Palestinian West Bank. Trade between Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA) rose 17 percent to 3.9 billion dollars in 2008, according to the Israeli Tax Authority (ITA). In 2007 it was 3.3 billion dollars, and in 2006, 3 billion. Palestinian imports and exports through Israeli ports rose by 5 percent to 1.2 billion dollars last year, up marginally from earlier years. “Trade is something that facilitates trust and political relations,” Ofir Gendelman, head of the Israeli-Palestinian Chamber of Commerce told IPS. “We expect trade figures to rise next year to about NIS (New Israeli Shekel) 20 billion (5.3 billion dollars). The sky is the limit should there be peace…

PCHR Strongly Condemns New Israeli Settlement Plans in the West Bank
PCHR – Palestinian Centre for Human Rights
September 9, 2009 – The Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR) strongly condemns new Israeli settlement plans in the West Bank. PCHR reiterates that settlement activities in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT) constitute a war crime, and calls upon the international community to fulfill their obligations stipulated in Article 1 of the Fourth Geneva Convention to ensure Israel’s respect to the Convention and to ensure the application of the Convention in the OPT. The international community’s inaction to take a strict position with respect to the impunity granted to Israel encourages Israel to commit further violations of the International Human Rights Law and International Humanitarian Law…

By Fredrik Dahl and Reza Derakhshi, Reuters
September 8, 2009 – Iranian authorities closed down pro-reform cleric Mehdi Karoubi’s office on Tuesday, Iranian news agency ILNA reported, and a website said one of his top aides was detained. Judiciary officials entered Karoubi’s office in northern Tehran and told him and others inside to leave, ILNA said, adding documents, discs and other material were seized. “Karoubi’s office has been sealed off upon the Tehran prosecutor’s order,” it quoted Esmail Gerami-Moghaddam, a spokesman for Karoubi’s party, as saying. Karoubi came fourth in June’s disputed presidential election…
