IT IS TIME TO ACT AND ABANDON SILENCE
By Ibrahim Ebeid
Ill treatment of prisoners is a general daily practice in occupied Iraq and it is widespread… Mr. Tareq Aziz, the legitimate Deputy Prime Minister of Iraq is no exception. His health is deteriorating rapidly; he is approaching his death in a small cell that, according to his lawyer, is not fit for dogs. The cells where the leaders of Iraq are kept do not see the sun, only darkness, and the prisoners are not allowed to exercise or see daylight more than a few minutes a day. The family of Mr. Aziz appealed several times to the Vatican, to The Pope and to many prominent Christian clergy to intervene on his behalf to help his release but there was no response. Even this religious Christian body did not acknowledge the human cries of the family of this great human being nor do they acknowledge his suffering or the agony of any Arab political prisoner. I have received an appeal from the families of the detainees in occupation jails asking the world, in the name of humanity, truth and justice, to intervene for the immediate release of their relatives. The prisoners are old, frail and sick; they suffer from chronic and critical diseases. Their families are in need for them since they were expelled from Iraq and all of their belongings were confiscated .They became refugees outside of their beloved country. They are penniless and desperate. The prisoners are being tried for resisting the occupation of their land and for saying NO TO THE OCCUPATION…

Stench of death hangs over Afghan riverbank
AMEEN SALARZAI
The stench of burnt flesh hung over the banks of the Kunduz river in the early hours of Friday, the ground scattered with the body parts of villagers who just wanted something for free. Helping yourself to the spoils of hijacked military convoys is nothing new in Afghanistan and the payload of two fuel tankers destined for Nato-led forces seemed as good as any. But the overnight bonanza soon turned to horror when Nato jets launched an airstrike before 3am (22.30GMT), strafing the tankers and igniting an inferno that officials said killed between 50 and 90 people. “Nobody was in one piece. Hands, legs and body parts were scattered everywhere. Those who were away from the fuel tanker were badly burnt,” said 32-year-old Mohammad Daud, depicting a scene from hell…

A big thank you
Ilan Pappe
Today was a unique day in the history of media coverage and discussion in Israel. All the electronic agencies, radio and television alike, discussed the occupation and the oppression of the Palestinians and more importantly, the possible price tag attached to it. It lasted only for 12 hours and tomorrow the obedient Israeli media will return to parrot the governmental new message to the masses that the “conflict” has ended and is about to be solved…Tomorrow we all will go back to the dismal reality in which Palestinian students are imprisoned daily without trial in Nablus, Palestinian children are killed near Ramallah, as also happened today. We will return to the reality of house demolitions as occurred two weeks ago in Jerusalem, of the continued strangulation of the Gaza Strip and the overall dispossession of Palestinians, wherever they are. But today of all days, those of us who happened to be here on the ground saw a light, a very powerful light, illuminating for a very short moment, the horizon of a different reality of peace and reconciliation. And it was all due to the decision of the Norwegian government to withdraw its investments in the Israeli hi-tech company Elbit (due to the latter’s involvement in the construction and maintenance of the apartheid wall)..

Physicians for Human Rights report
CIA doctors, psychologists participated in torture of prisoners
Tom Eley
A new report by the medical ethics group Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) charges that medical professionals attached to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) assisted in the torture of terror detainees. CIA doctors also provided a pseudo-medical rationale for torture and used prisoners as human research subjects to determine the effects and efficacy of various methods of torture, the report states. These acts constitute war crimes according to the Geneva Conventions and are clear violations of medical ethics. PHR called for an independent investigation of medical personnel in the CIA interrogation program. It is seeking to determine how many doctors participated in torture, and on what scientific and medical basis they conducted their work…

Ex-US soldier gets life in prison for rape, murder of Iraqi girl
AFP
A former US soldier will spend his life in prison for the gang rape and murder of an Iraqi girl and the slaughter of her family, a judge ruled Friday. Steven Dale Green was convicted in May of the 2006 rape and killing of 14-year-old Abeer al-Janabi and the murder of her mother, father and six-year-old sister in their home south of Baghdad. He was considered the ringleader of a group of five soldiers who plotted the crime over whiskey and a game of cards at a traffic check point in Mahmudiyah…

Prof Yehuda Hiss: The Missing Link in the Theft of Palestinian Organs?
The Autopsy Surgeon Aftonbladet Forgot
Jonathan Cook
…Hiss did not deny the plunder of organs, admitting that the body parts belonged to soldiers killed in action and had been passed to medical institutes and hospitals in the interests of advancing research. Understandably, however, the Palestinian families are unlikely to be satisfied with Hiss’ explanation. If the wishes of a soldier’s familiy were disregarded by Hiss, why not Palestinian families’ wishes too? Hiss was allowed to continue as director of Abu Kabir until 2005 when allegations of a trade in organs surfaced again. On this occasion Hiss admitted to having removed parts from 125 bodies without authorisation. Following a plea bargain with the state, the attorney general decided not to press criminal charges and Hiss was given only a reprimand. He has continued as chief pathologist at Abu Kabir…

Ahmadinejad Versus Khomeini
Neo-resistance
For the first time, since Imam Khomeini’s passing, special Ramadan ceremonies in his mausoleum are CANCELLED! This ceremony was hosted by Khomeni’s grandchildren, who have not spoken publicly against Ahmadinejad, but have shunned him in every possible other way: including not attending his inauguration, not receiving him in his first presidential visit to mausoleum, not congratulating him and etc. On other note, today the names and details of the killing of 72 individuals killed in the post-election aftermath was released by NoRooz…

Embassy guards ‘dress as Afghans’
By Kim Sengupta
Private security contractors guarding America’s embassy in Kabul dressed as mujahedin fighters and went out on unauthorised night-time military operations in the Afghan capital, according to reports being investigated by the US State Department. The dossier, seen by The Independent, tells how 18 guards, who are not trained for such missions, exposed the embassy to attack by taking weapons from its armoury. By removing night-vision goggles, they also left embassy staff “largely night-blind” in the event of an emergency, the reports adds…

Silly spat or dangerous rift
Bassel Oudat
…Syria confirmed it would not hand over any Iraqis to Baghdad without convincing evidence. The Syrian deputy foreign minister, Faisal Maqdad, did not deny the presence of Baathist leaders in his country; nevertheless, he was unwavering in his protection of them. Maqdad said that Syria “will not sacrifice a single drop of Iraqi blood,” as long as Iraq does not provide proof of its accusations. Maqdad expressed his conviction that the Iraqi Baathists living in Syria had nothing to do with the bombings, saying that Iraq wanted to “pin the blame on people who were not involved”. Commenting on the Iraqi decision, a senior Syrian politician told Al-Ahram Weekly that it “is incompatible with Syrian principles”… For his part, Marwan Habash, a member of the national leadership and Syrian foreign minister, says that the chaos of Iraqi statements and their contradictions about the recent attacks in Baghdad “indicated that it had all been fabricated”. Habash suspected many parties of being behind the random bombings in Iraq, and at the top of his list was Israeli intelligence…

Iran: Rebellion and reaction
By LEE SUSTAR and S. SEPEHRI
…Yet however badly the U.S. foreign policy establishment wants to prize open Iran, Washington is forced to rely on that country to hold together the occupation of Afghanistan and, especially, Iraq. This has given the Iranian regime more than a few good cards to play against the United States. As an Iraqi politician said last year, “There really is an Iranian-American condominium ruling Iraq these days…Ahmadinejad pursued this privatization agenda with gusto. The Iranian president has already privatized the postal service, sold shares in two state-owned banks and 5 percent of shares in a state-owned steel company. According to the Iran Privatization Organization, a state ministry, some 247 state enterprises have been partly or fully privatized since Ahmadinejad took office in 2005…This type of politics—populist in form, neoliberal in content—became familiar in Latin America in the 1980s and 1990s. While Ahmadinejad’s fan club on the international Left may imagine the Iranian president to be an anti-imperialist reformer like Venezuela’s Hugo Chávez, Ahmadinejad’s policies actually recall that of the former right-wing president of Peru, Alberto Fujimori..

Mullen: Time limit to Afghan war
Aljazeera.net
The US only has a limited time in which to gain victory in Afghanistan, Michael Mullen, the chairman of the US joint chiefs of staff, has said. Speaking on Thursday at a press conference with Robert Gates, the US defence secretary, Admiral Mullen said: “Time is not on our side.” He said the Pentagon was aware there must be a “sense of urgency” in Afghanistan, but he added there was no prospect of US troops being pulled out…

Only A Zionist Could Think of THIS
Irish4Palestine
Whilst perusing the news online I visited the Zionist Rag Arutz Sheva Now, I write often enough about “Zionist Logic” but this one tops the chart in the “Loony” category. See for yourself how a Zionist managed to link the Swedish Report on Illegal Organ harvesting, with, wait for it, Norway’s decision to divest from a company that helps to build settlements. Here’s the opening statement: Is Norway Now Anti-Semitic?…

Predicting Worse Ahead from America’s Economic Crisis
Stephen Lendman
Austrian economist Ludwig von Mises (1881 – 1973) said: “There is no means of avoiding a final collapse of a boom brought about by credit expansion. The alternative is only whether the crisis should come sooner as a result of a voluntary abandonment of further credit expansion, or later as a final and total catastrophe of the currency system involved.” Under Alan Greenspan, Ben Bernanke and successive US Treasury Secretaries, America chose the latter path and now faces the consequences of their reckless, criminal behavior…

Nice gestures: Gaza Ramadan day 14
Eva Bartlett, In Gaza
A photo project brought me back to the Gaza War Cemetery with a photographer I know. Most photographers, including us, know that the better time to shoot (pictures) is early morning or at sunset, the light softer, shadows play tricks… in general everything is nicer that the midday glare you get with bright sunlight. But particularly in a place like Gaza, where that midday sunlight is accompanied by intense heat, photographing is really best left to morning or evening…
