Palestinian Children Murdered by IDF Snipers
Kawther Salam
…Israeli snipers stationed in a watchtower on the edge of the squatter colony of Beit El near Ramallah have murdered four Palestinian Teenagers during the last 10 months. All the victims were students of the UN school for boys at the Mohammad_RiyadAl-Jalazun refugee camp in the occupied West Bank. The watchtower of the Israeli terrorists is about two hundred meters from the location of the UN school. Mohammad Riyad Nayef, age of 14, was the latest target of the criminal Israeli snipers, who murdered him on August 30 2009. The victim Mohammad Riyad is the son of the officer of the Palestinian intelligence, Riyad Neyef, who was murdered by another Israeli sniper in the town of Betania during the Al-Aqsa Intifada…

The More Things Change
Tom Engelhardt & David Swanson
…What’s striking are the continuities in American foreign and military policy, no matter who is in the White House. The first-term Obama foreign policy now looks increasingly like the second-term Bush foreign policy. Even where change can be spotted, it regularly seems to follow in the same vein…

BLANKFORT: Response to Avnery on boycott issue
Jeffrey Blankfort
…If one’s stand on the boycott issue is a critical moment of truth, and I believe that it is, I am sorry to say that you have come up wanting in your latest column. That you base your opposition to the boycott on a Jewish history that the vast majority of Israelis have never experienced, but on which they have justified their dispossession and oppression of the Palestinians (whose personal history is far worse) and that 99.9% of those same Jews oppose such a boycott (which I suspect is an exaggeration) is to make a mockery of everything that you have been doing and writing for decades. By what right have you and the 94% of your fellow Israelis who supported the onslaught on Gaza, and with whom you now stand on the boycott issue, to make any claim on those who believe that the only way to bring about a just solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict is to make Israel a political and economic pariah?..

The 16th Term: Obama’s New Betrayals are Old, Old Hat
Chris Floyd
…In any case, there is nothing new or unusual in Obama’s “continuity.” It has been the very air we’ve breathed for generations –a fetid, poisonous, cancerous vapor. Still, it is always salutary to have reality delineated as clearly as possible as often as possible. After all, someone must tell the children – and the millions of adult “progressives” who evidently have to re-learn these harsh lessons after every electoral victory for “hope” and “change.”…

There’s beauty: Gaza Ramadan day 11
Eva Bartlett, In Gaza
Looking for beauty when surrounded by injustices. Right up until maghreb, when the sun sets and the call to prayer rings out and the fasting masses can begin iftaar, Abu Adham related the events of yesterday’s Israeli navy shooting and shelling of his boat, destroying it. This is the third major Israeli harassment (to put it too lightly), and by far the worst, which Abu Adham’s boat has endured in the last year only. Prior incidents include: IOF shooting with live ammunition, IOF water-cannon dousings (high pressured water, sometimes laced with a nauseous toxic spray, aimed at key structural parts of the boat and at windows, which can knock fishermen off their feet and shatter cabin windows), IOF confiscation of Abu Adham’s boat and abduction of his crew (including son)…

Iran: Male Clerics Call for Justice While Female Parliamentarians Advocate for Discriminatory Laws Against Women
Sara Dehghan
…The only change in Iran now is that even some influential clerics have been speaking out against rape and torture in Iran’s prisons. Mehdi Karroubi, one of the defeated candidates in Iran’s disputed election is one of the major voices in that cause. Mr.Karroubi alleged that the abuses took place at Tehran’s Kahrizak prison, which was later closed down by the order of Ayatollah Khamenei. Karroubi kept insisting that he would not remain silent over the “medieval torture and corruption” in Iran’s prisons.More victims of rape who previously refused to talk about what happened to have been bravely speaking out and telling their stories. Even though it’s considered a social taboo and shame in the Iranian society…

Cooking Freedom…
Layla Anwar, An Arab Woman Blues
…But I have news for you, in IRAQ, and as per your definitions, we had “ freedom deficit”, so we got “ intervened “ upon. The intervention in the form of a brutal invasion and occupation on bogus charges that your own media and corrupt, authoritarian, hypocritical, deceitful, tyrannical government concocted… We moved in the space of 6 years from “Freedom Deficit” to Freedom SURPLUS. You know Freedom Surplus, don’t you ? Like those American retail Army stores that bear the same name. American Freedom Surplus. We are so fucking free now, you would not imagine it. REALLY. No more “despots and autocrats”. We have an Iranian Shiite theocracy instead. No more oppression of liberties, we are partitioned as per sect, ethnicity and gender.
Oh, and the gays you have covered in your precious publications, are being massacred, due to FREEDOM SURPLUS. The intervention of limited benefits, am afraid to break it to you, has by coincidence given birth to 2 million dead, 400'000 reported missing, mass graves, deformed babies that look like Frankenstein, (courtesy of Anglo-American DU and phosphorus), a cool 5 million orphans, a good number of which are being sold and trafficked due to FREEDOM SURPLUS, a nice 2 million widows with zero support, 5 million refugees who refuse to return, rivers and lakes drying up, no drinking water and still no electricity, bombs, kidnapping, arbitrary arrests daily, our infrastructure completely destroyed, our history looted, the most corrupt state governance, we ranked no.2 actually, is that not nice, REALLY, thousands in prisons, raped and tortured with no trial, women waiting in line at the gallows – the highest rate of executions in the world, the worst country for journalists like yourself… Mr. Whitaker, and I could go and on….

US commander’s report paves way for military escalation in Afghanistan
By Tom Eley
The commander of US and NATO forces in Afghanistan, Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal, has issued a dire assessment of the state of military operations there. The classified report sets the stage for an expansion of US troop levels in Afghanistan by as many as 45,000. McChrystal’s report, which was immediately endorsed by the chief of the US Central Command, Gen. David Petraeus, is to be handed over to President Barack Obama today. According to press reports, McChrystal’s review makes no specific request for additional troops. However, according to Tuesday’s New York Times, American officials said “it effectively lays the groundwork for such a request in the coming weeks.”…

A UN Special Focus on Gaza Under Siege
Stephen Lendman

For over two years under siege, including months post-conflict, Gaza has endured “a protracted (humanitarian) crisis that is reflected in almost every aspect of daily life:” their livelihoods, income, enough food, too little of the nutritious kinds, medical care for the seriously ill, enough electricity and fuel, no homes for many thousands, the ability to rebuild, and other collective punishments. Pre-siege, over 4,000 products, commodities, medicines, materials, and other items entered freely. Now it’s around three to four dozen in limited quantities, gradually being increased to include small amounts of others. Yet most basics are denied – most food items, medicines called “dual use,” light bulbs, fabrics, needles, candles, matches, mattresses, blankets and sheets, cutlery, books, coffee and tea, cigarettes, clothing and shoes, and much more, things posing no threat to Israel or planned for “dual use.”..

Obama & Empire: Power, Illusion & America’s Last Taboo
John Pilger
Two years ago, at Socialism 2007 in Chicago, I spoke about an “invisible government,” a term used by Edward Bernays, one of the founders of modern propaganda. It was Bernays who, in the 1920s, invented “public relations” as a euphemism for propaganda. Deploying the ideas of his uncle, Sigmund Freud, Bernays campaigned on behalf of the tobacco industry for American women to take up smoking as an act of feminist liberation; he called cigarettes “torches of freedom.” The invisible government that Bernays had in mind brought together the power of all media — PR, the press, broadcasting, advertising. It was the power of form: of branding and image-making over substance and truth — and I would like to talk today about this invisible government’s most recent achievement: the rise of Barack Obama and the silencing of the left…

Iraqi Journalist Detained for a Year Without Charge by US Forces Despite Iraqi Court Order to Release Him
A year ago today, US and Iraqi forces raided the home of Iraqi journalist Ibrahim Jassam, a freelance photographer working for Reuters. Soldiers seized his computer hard drive and cameras. He was led away, handcuffed and blindfolded. For the past year the US military has held Jassam without charge. Ten months ago, the Iraqi Central Criminal Court ordered his release for lack of evidence, but the US military refused to release him, claiming he was a “high security threat.”..

Embassy Guards Gone Wild: The Pictures (NSFW)
By Daniel Schulman
…The Project on Government Oversight provided me with a series of photographs—a dozen in all—that depict the bacchanalian goings on at Camp Sullivan, home to the ArmorGroup personnel who guard the nearby US embassy compound in Kabul. On Tuesday, POGO sent a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton detailing a host of explosive charges relating to ArmorGroup’s management of the embassy contract, including evidence of “near-weekly deviant hazing and humiliation of subordinates.” According to POGO, “witnesses report that the highest levels of AGNA management in Kabul are aware of and have personally observed—or even engaged in—these activities, but have done nothing to stop them.”..

Lies, damned lies… and the double-speak I would expunge
Johann Hari
The English language needs periodically to be given a spring-clean, where we scrape off the phrases that have become stuck to the floor and toss out the rotting metaphors that have fallen down the back of the settee. George Orwell warned that language will inevitably become cluttered with phrases that have lost their meaning – or, worse, are actually “designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind”. He advised: “If one gets rid of these bad habits one can think more clearly, and to think clearly is a necessary first step towards political regeneration.”…

Liberation, not a fictitious Palestinian “state”
Hasan Abu Nimah and Ali Abunimah
Late last month, Salam Fayyad, the appointed Palestinian Authority (PA) prime minister in Ramallah, made a surprise announcement: he declared his intention to establish a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip before the end of 2011 regardless of the outcome of negotiations with Israel. Fayyad told the London Times that he would work to build “facts on the ground, consistent with having our state emerge as a fact that cannot be denied.” His plan was further elaborated in a lengthy document grandly titled “Program of the Thirteenth Government of the Palestinian National Authority.”…

George Will and his call for a “pullout” from Afghanistan
Left I on the News
The pages and airwaves of the media are filled today with the “news” that conservative columnist George Will has called for a “pullout” from Afghanistan. Let’s see what Will actually called for, shall we? America should do only what can be done from offshore, using intelligence, drones, cruise missiles, airstrikes and small, potent Special Forces units, concentrating on the porous 1,500-mile border with Pakistan, a nation that actually matters.” Gosh, how progressive. How noble. Let’s keep killing the natives, but let’s do so in a way that makes sure that none of our boys (and girls) get killed…

A Little Girl in Kabul

… You could say that the last time Guljumma and her father had meaningful contact with the US government was when it bombed them…. The destructiveness of this war is reality for Guljumma and her father. And for hundreds of families at Helmand Refugee Camp District 5. And, in fact, for millions of Afghan people. The violence of this war – military, economic and social – keeps destroying the future. Every day and night…

Red Crescent: “Army fired at our medics as they to save the life of a wounded child”
Saed Bannoura
Mo’tasem Awad, in charge of the International Humanitarian Law department at the Red Crescent stated that Israeli soldiers opened fire at Red Crescent medics while they were trying to approach a wounded child who died of his wounds. The child, Mohammad Riyadh Nayef, 15, from al Jalazoun refugee camp, was shot and seriously wounded on Tuesday after a round of live ammunition hit him in the chest. As medics tried to approach the child, the army opened fire at them, and a soldier told one of the medics that “the army does not need anybody’s help, we have an ambulance on its way”…

Dream as Nightmare
By Jeremy Salt – Ankara
In the Guardian recently , Carlo Strenger launched yet another defence of Israel as the democracy in the Middle East. His defence of himself is that he opposes ‘many of Israel’s policies’ and fights the occupation ‘day by day’ but this is only the occupation of land seized and plundered in 1967 and not the land seized and plundered in 1948. Much of this land was never allocated to the state of Israel in the first place and the sovereignty conferred on Israel gave the Zionists no right to take it from its owners. Had they remained, a different kind of democracy would have developed in Palestine, one in which the indigenous people would have retained control of their land through the ballot box. That was why they had to go…

RESPONSE TO URI AVNERY’S ‘TUTU’S PRAYER’
Desertpeace
Uri Avnery has written a piece this week which was not in support of the Global BDS Movement. Mr. Avnery’s name is synonymous with the Peace Movement of Israel. A former member of the Knesset, he has travelled a long road to believe in what he believes in today. He is a man that I have the utmost respect for and wish him a long life ahead as an activist. BUT…. I must voice my disagreements with what he has to say in the following essay… my comments will appear in red…

Animal House in Afghanistan

Drunken brawls, prostitutes, hazing and humiliation, taking vodka shots out of buttcracks— no, the perpetrators of these Animal House-like antics aren’t some depraved frat brothers. They are the private security contractors guarding Camp Sullivan, otherwise known as the US Embassy in Kabul. These allegations, and many more, are contained in a letter sent to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Tuesday by the Project on Government Oversight, which has been investigating the embassy security contract held by ArmorGroup North America (a subsidiary of Wackenhut, which is in turn owned by the security behemoth G4S)…

No ordinary day during Ramadan: Gaza Ramadan day 10
Eva Bartlett, In Gaza
Early yesterday morning (August 31st) a Palestinian fishing boat was attacked (again) by an Israeli naval boat. The Palestinian trawler arrived back at Gaza port still in flames, and it took a good 20 to 30 minutes to extinguish the flames. The fishermen, thankfully not seriously injured (this time), are now out of a source of work and income. The owner, Abu Adham, says there are at least 18 of them who work on this boat alone, support families from their modest income…
