The U.S. Invades and Occupies Pakistan
By Talha Mujaddidi. Axis of Logic
We are watching it happen in the streets. The recurring nightmare has become a grim, new reality for the people of Pakistan. After watching the horrors of the U.S. invasions and occupations of Iraq and neighboring Afhanistan for 8 years, the “war on terror” has finally arrived in The Land of the Pure. Obama is fulfilling his campaign promise to Pakistan. The sudden arrival of U.S. marines, U.S. military Hummers, the hired killers of Blackwater, houses barricaded for U.S. personnel in Islamabad and the construction of the world’s largest U.S. “Embassy” are terrorizing this nation of 180 million people. The U.S. slaughter and destruction in Iraq and neighboring Afghanistan for the last 8 years warn them of what may lie in store for them, their families, their land…

In a Rotten State: Israel’s siege killed Gaza’s economy
Eva Bartlett, In Gaza
Abu Abed can’t make a profit, and although 54 years old, he still has not married. “I can’t pay my rent, I can’t afford a wedding.” His shop, roughly 3m by 4m, costs him more than 3,500 dollars a year in rent alone. His wares are laid out on tables on a busy pedestrian street in the Saha market area in Gaza City. The goods, plastic toys and running shoes imported from China, were brought in via the tunnels between Gaza and Egypt, at a high price. One large bag of grain filled with the cheaply made toys cost 30 dollars to purchase, but the tunnel trip added another 70 dollars to Abu Abed’s expenditures. “I can make maybe 20 dollars when I sell these toys, but that will take two or three months”…

Michael Jackson : “They Don’t Care About Us”
…For those who feel his music was mere bubblegum pop, and thus devoid of serious social commentary, check out one of his post ‘Thriller’ songs; “They Don’t Care About Us.” … Michael Jackson was a master of his art. He may be gone; he certainly won’t be forgotten…

Obama’s AfPak war intensifies on both sides of border
By James Cogan
As low voter turnout in Afghanistan’s presidential election last week provided further evidence of broad hostility to the US-led occupation, the armed insurgency has continued to escalate. The number of US and NATO troops killed in the country during 2009 reached 301 yesterday—already the highest annual toll of the eight-year occupation. The most recent reported deaths include an unnamed soldier killed on Friday by a roadside bomb and 18-year-old Matthew E. Wildes, from Hammond, Louisiana, who was killed on August 27 when an insurgent IED (improvised explosive device) hit his vehicle…

Boycotts as a Legitimate Means of Resistance
As Determined by the Oppressed People
Kim Petersen
Prejudice does not always come with an ugly face. The same holds for Zionism and racism. It is entirely possible for well-intentioned people to hold a prejudice and, even worse, act on held prejudices. Uri Avnery opposes the brutality inflicted on Palestinians. He campaigns for peace with Palestinians. But he also has a Zionist past. He is European born and fought for the terrorist Irgun in perpetration of a holocaust (Nakba) against Palestinans. He later renounced Irgun’s tactics. He is antiwar, but he is not anti-the fruits of war. He approves of a two state solution. In other words, Israeli Jews will keep the fruits of their dispossessing others — this while continuing to press for the return of what they were dispossessed. Avnery advocates selective use of tactics against Zionism. This is apparent when it comes to an international boycott of Israel…

Seeing Israel’s prisons through Palestinian eyes
Sharon Eolis
…In addition to the open-air prison of the Gaza Strip, more than 11,000 Palestinian women, men and children are incarcerated in Israeli maximum security facilities like Nufha, Haderim, Jalamy, and Ashkalon, among others. In Gaza City, a group of Palestinian women with family members languishing in Israeli prisons described for convoy visitors the horrific conditions in these concentration camps. Muhammad Hassamand, the spouse of one of the women, has spent 23 years in prison. His sons, one 12 and another 15, cannot see their father. His spouse said, “We didn’t go to them. The Israelis came to our land. We are the indigenous people. There are more than 11,000 Palestinians in Israeli jails [compared to] one Israeli soldier.”…

Endless Ramblings. 4 – Danish Cartoons.
Layla Anwar, Uncensored Arabwomanblues
I don’t know if you have noticed it or not, but I have never written or alluded to the Danish cartoons in the past. I am, of course, assuming that you know what the Danish cartoons are all about. In sum, they portray the Prophet Mohammed, (Peace & Blessings upon him) as some vile, lewd, ugly, violent character…in short, a terrorist. Another weapon in the “war against terror”. And in that war against “terror”, how many Muslims were ruthlessly tortured and murdered ! How many Muslims compared to Christians, Jews and others ? Millions, millions…

The Truth about Honduras
YayaCanada
…Many have simply disappeared – a familiar tactic in US-dominated Latin American countries, as famously depicted by Costa Gravas in his 1982 film: “Missing”. Martinez says people are being chopped up, dumped into metal containers and set afire to thwart any chance of identification by their families. In the audience was a man from Haiti, another country in which Canada has aided and abetted American interference. He warned the speaker not to put much stock in any words of support from any governments or government agencies. They say one thing and do another. He said that ultimately it is up to the people of Honduras to bring about their own solution, one way or another. Indeed, it seemed there was no one in the room who believed the media stories that Obama is critical of the coup or intends to follow through on any promises…

Manufactured poverty drowns hope:Gaza Ramadan day 7
Eva Bartlett
In the al Bateran family neighbourhood, off Zarga street just outside Gaza city, the mood was heavier, sadder somehow. They are living with a poverty they have no hope of climbing out of. In most of the families I know, there are no young men, no bread-winners. Fathers are ill or disabled, and the children are mostly school age, meaning no help to the income but more bites in the family expenses. Some of the men now jobless used to work in Israel, but lost these jobs when the borders were sealed to Palestinian labourers after the 2nd Initifada [uprising]. With 95% of Gaza’s industries shut down from the Israeli siege and attacks, and without cement, construction isn’t a work option in Gaza…

Iranians Say Prison Rape Is Not New
Robert Mackey
On Friday, Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad floated a bizarre conspiracy theory: that any rape or torture of political prisoners in Iranian detention centers in recent months had been carried out by “enemy” agents, not the government. According to Reuters, Mr. Ahmadinejad said in remarks at Tehran University that were broadcast live on state radio: “In some detention centers inappropriate measures have taken place for which the enemy was again responsible.”…

17 killed and dozens wounded in Iraq attacks
AFP
Seventeen people, including two children, six policemen and a soldier, were killed, and dozens wounded on Saturday in a spate of attacks across Iraq, making it the deadliest day since Ramadan began. In the worst incident, five policemen and three civilians, including a 10-year-old child, died when a suicide car bomber targeted a police base in Al-Sharqat, north of Tikrit, officials said. A fable, a film and a fraud: the Israel lobby’s information fraud
Paul J. Balles

By Mazin Qumsiyeh, Desertpeace

Coup in Honduras enters its third month
Bill Van Auken
It is now two months since Honduran soldiers abducted the country’s elected president, Manuel Zelaya, forced him onto an airplane and flew him out of the country. The June 28 coup installed a right-wing regime backed by the military, the country’s native oligarchy and the multinational corporations that reap hefty profits from the exploitation of Honduran workers…

Gen. Casey ‘Unsure’ If Rising Iraq Violence Will Imperil Pullout Plan
Jason Ditz
The massive death toll in some recent high profile bombings in Iraq has long been dismissed by US commanders as irrelevant to the question of overall security. Today, however, General George Casey sounding a somewhat more pessimistic view. While he insisted it “is way too early to make any judgments” he would not dismiss out of hand, as so many other officials have, that the administration may rethink its troop pullout strategy in the face of rising violence. Casey insisted the current plan was for the time being still in place, to have about 50,000 troops in Iraq this time next year…

US wants 20,000 more troops to fight Taliban
By Kim Sengupta in Kabul
The commander of Nato forces in Afghanistan will ask for 20,000 more international troops as part of his new strategic plan for the alliance’s war against a resurgent Taliban, The Independent has learned. The demand from General Stanley McChrystal will almost certainly lead to more British soldiers being sent to the increasingly treacherous battlegrounds of Helmand, the Taliban heartland, despite growing opposition to the war…

The Beginning of the End of the Middle East Crisis
Resolving the Displaced Persons Problem
Dan Lieberman
…Can anyone believe that Israel is not directly responsible for the Palestinian exodus? Did these people voluntarily decide to leave their homes, face starvation, have entire families commit suicide because of their desperation and then be willing to sit quietly in refugee camps? Are these verified reports of forced removals, terrorizing, killings and destruction of more than 400 Palestinian villages only stories? Why were the villages destroyed? Why weren’t the villagers allowed to return? Why were vacant homes instantly occupied? In Rwanda, Bosnia, Kosovo and elsewhere, the western nations have been firm in demanding prompt return of refugees and have fought to achieve that demand. The Palestinian situation is more insidious. In other situations, refugees had been created, but wanton property and asset seizures were not a rule. In Palestine, Israel seized all properties and assets and allowed newly arrived foreigners to occupy vacant homes. No precedent for these illegal operations exists in the post World War II western civilized world…

The Washington Post’s Cheney-ite defense of torture
Glenn Greenwald
If anyone ever tells you that they don’t understand what is meant by “stenography journalism” — or ever insists that America is plagued by a Liberal Media — you can show them this article from today’s Washington Post and, by itself, it should clear up everything. The article’s headline is “How a Detainee Became An Asset — Sept. 11 Plotter Cooperated After Waterboarding” — though an equally appropriate headline would be: “The Joys and Virtues of Torture — how Dick Cheney Kept Us Safe.” I defy anyone to identify a single way the article would be different if The Post had let Dick Cheney write it himself. ..

Hebrew report: Israel built 150 housing units in eastern Jerusalem in six months
Palestinian Information Center
An Israeli organization monitoring the Israeli settlement drive in eastern Jerusalem has revealed that the Israeli occupation authority (IOA) had built at least 150 housing units in occupied Jerusalem, particularly in the Old City. Ir Amim, an Israeli organization founded in 2004 to promote Israeli-Palestinian co-existence, reported that around 750 Israeli settlers have inhabited those units. More than 2000 others have already settled in the heart of the Arab suburbs, it added…

Iraqi who threw shoes at Bush to be released early
KIM GAMEL, Associated Press Writer
An Iraqi journalist imprisoned for hurling his shoes at former President George W. Bush will be released next month after his sentence was reduced for good behavior, his lawyer said Saturday. Muntadhar al-Zeidi’s act of protest during Bush’s last visit to Iraq as president turned the 30-year-old reporter into a folk hero across the Arab world, as his case became a rallying point for critics who resented the 2003 U.S. invasion and occupation…
