Obama lies to defend US War of Aggression in Afghanistan
Carl Herman
…On August 17, 2009 President Obama again defended the US invasion of Afghanistan. He called it “fundamental to the defense of our people,” and said, “But we must never forget this is not a war of choice, this is a war of necessity. If left unchecked, the Taliban insurgency will mean an even larger safe haven from which al-Qaeda would plot to kill more Americans.” nThe US legal argument that the invasion of Afghanistan is not a War of Aggression is that the US actions in Afghanistan are defensive […]Let’s review the history of the US invasion of Afghanistan before we analyze the US claim that this is a defensive war. After the attacks of 9/11, the US government requested the cooperation of the Afghanistan government for extradition of Osama bid Laden to be charged with the 9/11 attacks. The Afghan government agreed, as per usual cooperative international law, as soon as the US government provided evidence of bin Laden’s involvement. The US government refused to provide any evidence. The Afghan government refused US troops entering their country and extradition until evidence was provided, and made their argument to the world press for the rule of law to apply to the US extradition request. The US invaded Afghanistan without providing evidence and without UN Security Council approval. President Bush stated, “There’s no need to discuss evidence of innocence or guilt. We know he’s guilty.” Seven years later, despite promises to do so, the US has not provided any evidence t! hat bin Laden was involved in the 9/11 attacks…

How to get inside a Fortress.
Layla Anwar, An Arab Woman Blues
Green zone. Sounds like a nice word. Green lush, cool shades, paved streets, no garbage dumps, no pools of sewage, running water and 24/7 electricity…all complemented with bars serving alcohol, a couple of dancing nightclubs, Olympic size swimming pools with WATER, and good looking women and hookers alike, throwing away their dreary black robes for hot pants… To get inside that fortress of corruption, theft, criminality, prostitution (political and otherwise)…to get inside the pimping circle of the puppets of the dual occupation, is no easy task. Several checkpoints and stringent security measures are in place well before you reach the main gate. Today’s explosions inside the fortress tell us otherwise… Maliki was quick to blame “Sunni insurgents” and “Baathist Saddamists” as opposed to non Saddamist Baathists. However this short video tells otherwise, or at least leaves the door open to other “culprits.”…

6 US troops die in Afghanistan ahead of election
By JASON STRAZIUSO and AMIR SHAH, Associated Press Writers
The U.S. military said Wednesday six American troops were killed in Afghanistan, as militants killed six election workers amid growing fears on the eve of the presidential election that insurgents would mar the vote. Two troops were killed in gunfire in the south on Wednesday, the U.S. military said, while a third was killed in an unspecified hostile attack. The U.S. also said a roadside bomb Tuesday in the south killed two troops, while another died of noncombat-related injuries. No other details were released. The deaths bring to at least 32 the number of American troops killed in the country this month, a record pace. Forty-four U.S. troops died in Afghanistan last month, the deadliest month of the eight-year war….

Israeli Policy of Ethnic Cleansing: Veteran Arab Village to Make Way for New Haredi City in Wadi Ara
Mustafa Abu Halaal and Yuad Winter, Haokets
Recently plans have been greatly accelerated to establish a Haredi (Jewish ultra-orthodox) city in Wadi Ara, between Harish and Katzir. These latter two cities were already included in the 1990s in the “star plan” of Ariel Sharon, the stated goal of which was to separate Arab cities and to prevent their development through the establishment of new towns for Jews only between them. Now the Ministry of Housing is planning to establish, in the area between Harish and Katzir, no less than 20,000 housing units for Haredis. “We must stop the Arab expansion in Wadi Ara,” said Israel’s Minister of Construction and Housing, Ariel Atias…

Huckabee Offers Palestinians State “Some Place Else”
Amjad Atallah
In a move sure to antagonize the Onion for not having come up with it first, former U.S. presidential candidate Mike Huckabee endorsed Israeli control over the occupied West Bank and rejected the “two-state solution.” Instead, the Southern Baptist preacher suggested that Palestinians should “have a place of their own” some place else. Both my parents immigrated to Indiana from the Palestinian town of Ramallah in the early 1960s, before Israel’s occupation in 1967. Like many Palestinians in the Diaspora, they would have been happy with a secular democratic state in the entirety of historic Palestine/Eretz Israel with equal rights for both Jews and Arabs. But also like many Palestinians, convinced that Israelis would never agree to granting equality to all Palestinians, they have supported attempts to create a rump Palestinian state in the parts of Palestine occupied by Israel in 1967 where Palestinians could exercise their right to self-determination…

Repression allowed, resistance denied: Israel’s suppression of the popular movement against the Apartheid Annexation Wall
Stop the Wall
It has been five years since the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued its advisory opinion on the Wall in the occupied Palestinian territory – where they held in a unanimous opinion that it was illegal and should be dismantled. No significant advance in the situation on the ground has been achieved, and the Wall construction continues relentlessly. Instead, since the Court started its hearings in February 2004, the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) have intensified repression of the affected villages struggling against the Wall, killing the first activists. The gaze of the international community must now turn not only to the illegality and injustice of the Wall, but also to the plight of those still attempting to resist its construction. In villages across the West Bank, local residents have formed committees and taken on a campaign of mass popular resistance to the Wall, engaging in weekly, and even daily, demonstrations. These communities have faced a staggering level of repression and violence from the Israeli authorities. It is the aim of this report to investigate that repression and to determine its true extent and nature. ..

Israel Absolves Itself of Responsibility for Brain-Damaged American Peace Activist
Richard Silverstein
If it weren’t so tragic, it would actually be entertaining to watch Israel work every possible legal and political angle to get its way in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The IDF, intelligence agencies, and military lawyers would put those of Kafka’s The Trial to shame. And they’ve worked their magic once again in the case of Tristan Anderson, American peace activist who was shot in the head at an anti-Separation Wall demonstration several months ago, suffering serious brain injury for which he is still hospitalized. It simply would not do for Israel to accept any responsibility for assaulting and nearly killing an unarmed, non-violent protestor who posed no threat to Israeli personnel…

Gaza’s tunnel economy
Eric Ruder
ISRAEL LAUNCHED a pre-dawn wave of air strikes against a tunnel on August 10 that it said was being used by Palestinian militants to smuggle explosives into Gaza. Israel claimed that its offensive was a reaction to the firing of rockets at the Eretz border crossing that connects Gaza and Israel. The attack produced a ripple of headlines in newspapers around the world, but the attention was notable precisely because though such strikes were once routine, they have been rare in the months since Israel carried out its December/January massacre that claimed the lives of some 1,400 Palestinians and severely damaged Gaza’s already fragile infrastructure…

Iran Proposes Giving Huthists Sanctuary in Iraq
By Ma’ad Fayad
A high-ranking Iraqi government source has affirmed that Tehran is behind the proposal that was put forward by a prominent leader of the Iraqi Islamic Supreme Council[IISC], led by Abdulaziz al-Hakim, to host Yemeni Al-Huthi figures in Iraq. He noted that the proposal was justified on the ground that it would “embarrass” the Yemeni authorities who are currently hosting Iraqi Baath Party members and officials of the former Iraqi regime…

Gaza: Where cancer sufferers get only painkillers
IRIN news
Arafat Hamdona, 20, has been confined to the cancer unit of As-Shifa, Gaza’s primary hospital, since he was diagnosed with maxillary skin tumours in June 2008. Red lesions protrude from his face, his features are distorted and his eyes swollen shut. In April, Arafat was permitted to travel to Augusta Victoria Hospital in East Jerusalem where he received three series of chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment. He was scheduled to return for further treatment, but has not been granted permission by the Israeli authorities to leave Gaza. “He is only given pain killers,” said Arafat’s father, Faraj Hamdona, explaining that that is all As-Shifa has to offer. According to a July 2009 report published by the World Health Organization (WHO) in Jerusalem, Gaza doctors and nurses do not have the medical equipment to respond to the health needs of the 1.5 million people living in the Gaza Strip….

The Central Intelligence Agency in 2004 hired outside contractors from the private security contractor Blackwater USA as part of a secret program to locate and assassinate top operatives of Al Qaeda, according to current and former government officials. Executives from Blackwater, which has generated controversy because of its aggressive tactics in Iraq, helped the spy agency with planning, training and surveillance. The C.I.A. spent several million dollars on the program, which did not successfully capture or kill any terrorist suspects…

Kabul urges poll violence blackout
Aljazeera.net
The Afghan government has called for an international media blackout on reporting violent acts on the day of its presidential elections, following a series of attacks across the country. The Taliban has vowed to disrupt Thursday’s vote, and on Wednesday the group claimed responsibility for an attack on a bank in the capital, Kabul… The government’s appeal to the media not to cover violent incidents on election day was contained in a foreign ministry statement. “All domestic and international media agencies are requested to refrain from broadcasting any incident of violence during the election process,” it said…
