The world’s wicked war of words
Anti-Arab brainwashing by the US media
Paul J. Balles
…Western brainwashing comes from the media. Readers, listeners and viewers need to be aware of these propaganda sources. About the media in general, Steven Salaita correctly observed: The flippancy with which US media apply the word “terrorism” to Arab populations reinforces the notion that violence in the Arab world is ahistorical and therefore senseless. Arabs in turn become a people without narratives who belong to a culture incapable of rationality. Steve Emerson has a website and blog with as much anti-Arab ranting on it as any bigot might produce. Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz has implied that all Arabs are potential terrorists and therefore worthy of slaughter. American Israeli Caroline Glick, Deputy Managing Editor of The Jerusalem Post, writes two weekly syndicated columns preaching hard-line Israeli propaganda…

Video: The Little Dead Girl – Nazim Hikmet’s Song of Hiroshima
John Steele
The United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 — and every year people across the world commemorate this horrific crime, and renew their determination to destroy all nuclear weapons across this planet. This is a poem written and read by Turkey’s great communist poet Nizim Hikmet. In this video, the poem is then sung in Turkish by Joan Baez — it was set to music by Zulfu Livaneli…

Five years of illegality
Oxfam International
After five years of illegality, it is time to dismantle the Wall and respect the rights of Palestinians. In an advisory opinion, rendered on 9 July 2004, the International Court of Justice stated that Israel’s construction of the Wall in the occupied Palestinian Territory was illegal and called for its immediate dismantling. Five years later, the advisory opinion has been met only by inaction: Israel continues constructing the Wall and the international community remains silent. Oxfam International underscores the urgency of addressing this situation in a compilation of testimonies that is published today…

Ministers must explain destruction of ‘torture flight’ papers, says panel of MPs
Mark Townsend
Ministers must explain why crucial documents relating to CIA “torture flights” that stopped on sovereign British territory were destroyed, a panel of MPs has said. A damning appraisal by the influential foreign affairs select committee on Britain’s role in the rendition of terror suspects and alleged complicity of torture condemns the government’s lack of transparency on vital areas of concern…

GI Special 7H6: Heartbreaker [ 8 August 2009 ]
Thomas F. Barton
The number of Army medical centers and clinics that provide timely access to routine medical care has hit a five-year low, Army records show, often forcing soldiers and their families to seek treatment off base. About 16 percent of Army patients, particularly family members, can’t get appointments with their primary physicians and are sent to doctors off the installation, according to the results of a nine-month Army review finished late last year. Some of those patients end up in emergency rooms or urgent care centers, says the study. Army records show that 26 of its medical centers, hospitals and clinics are unable to meet the Pentagon standard requiring that 90 percent of patients get routine care appointments within seven days. Those are the worst results since the start of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan — a 13 percent increase from 2005 in the number of medical facilities unable to meet the standard.

Adam, The “Terrorist”
Sami, the Bedouin.
This picture, of my wife and our little baby I got yesterday evening Aug. 5th 09, a moments before dusk. Today my wife went to visit her brother in the “israeli” jail, and of course she got to take our baby Adam with her. Adam, our baby, is less than two months, he’s exactly 54 days old today as he went to visit his detained uncle for the first time. The “israeli” jail is some 40km away from our home, and the journey to it takes some 30-40 minutes in a normal country. In a normal country everything is normal but in a racist regime like in “israel”, everything is hell for the “less human” native Palestinians. In a normal country the trip takes 30-40 minutes, but in a racist regime it takes more than 12 hours…

Fuck the Hypocrites.
Layla Anwar, An Arab Woman Blues
…Some were terribly offended by the word FUCK. Then they proceeded to preach by telling me that it is most unbecoming and uncivilized to use such obscenities. Civility and civilization or lack thereof, for them is confined to words, not acts. The Iranian collaboration with the US in destroying Iraq is not an issue – which is what this post was all about. The word FUCK is. The dirty opportunism and hypocrisy of the “alternative” left is not an issue, but the word FUCK is…

New Iraq…From Pharmacist to Housekeeper
By Afif Sarhan, IOL Correspondent
Lamis Abdul-Halim, a pharmacist, sought a job in every nook and corner after the Baghdad pharmacy she worked in for 15 years closed. But after an endless search, she finally gave up. “No one was hiring pharmacists,” Abdul-Halim, 41, told IslamOnline.net. “I have two kids and what my husband earns is barely enough to pay for the rent. So I decided to look for a job as housekeeper,” she said bitterly. “I stepped over any pride I ever had in my life.” Many university graduates and experienced professionals are reportedly forced to take menial, low-wage jobs to feed their families…

General Sir David Richards: Afghanistan will take 40 years
Michael Evans, Times
Britain’s mission in Afghanistan could last for up to 40 years, the next head of the Army warns today in an exclusive interview with The Times. General Sir David Richards, who becomes Chief of the General Staff on August 28, said: “The Army’s role will evolve, but the whole process might take as long as 30 to 40 years.” He emphasised that British troop involvement, currently 9,000-strong, should only be needed for the medium term, but insisted that there was “absolutely no chance” of Nato pulling out…

US Still Paying Blackwater Millions
Jeremy Scahill
Just days before two former Blackwater employees alleged in sworn statements filed in federal court that the company’s owner, Erik Prince, “views himself as a Christian crusader tasked with eliminating Muslims and the Islamic faith from the globe,” the Obama administration extended a contract with Blackwater for more than $20 million for “security services” in Iraq, according to federal contract data obtained by The Nation. The State Department contract is scheduled to run through September 3. In May, the State Department announced it was not renewing Blackwater’s Iraq contract, and the Iraqi government has refused to issue the company an operating license….

Tortured Logic (video): ACLU launches campaign to ask Eric Holder to investigate Bush and Cheney’s war crimes
Andy Worthington
Yesterday, as part of its “Accountability for Torture” project (to which I contributed here), the ACLU launched a new campaigning video, “Tortured Logic,” in which ten people (including Oliver Stone, Philip Glass and a relative of one of the 9/11 victims) read out passages from the notorious torture memos, issued by the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel (OLC), which were released by the Obama administration in May…

Obama administration asks SCOTUS to block detainee photos
JOSH GERSTEIN
The Obama Administration is asking the Supreme Court to block the public release of detainee abuse photos that were the subject of a high-profile reversal by President Barack Obama earlier this year. On Friday afternoon, the Justice Department filed a petition with the Supreme Court asking it to overturn an appeals court decision requiring the Pentagon to disclose the photos, which depict alleged abuse of prisoners in U.S. military custody in Iraq and Afghanistan…

De-revolutionising Fatah
Khaled Amayreh
Riding in new limousines and other smart cars, hundreds of Fatah delegates on Tuesday converged on Bethlehem where the movement’s much-heralded and long-awaited sixth congress is being held amid heavy security and high hopes for revitalising a political current beset by internal divisions and a reputation for corruption. Thousands of security personnel were deployed all over Bethlehem with the venue of the conference made inaccessible to many journalists, some of who were detained briefly for “trespassing” and “not possessing valid press credentials”…

Militarizing the Homeland
Dahr Jamail and Jason Coppola, t r u t h o u t
…That the US military has made blatant use of the Media and the entertainment industry to indoctrinate the young American mind is common knowledge. What has perhaps gone unnoticed is how the military is insidiously infiltrating our social and public lives. Earlier this summer, on Memorial Day weekend in Times Square, New York City, the military showcased weaponry while recruiters posed for pictures and engaged in small talk with women, men, children and families. Women fondled rocket launchers, small children pretended to fire heavy machine guns, young boys posed with assault rifles, and even housewives enjoyed the act of aiming rocket launchers…

Backed by their army, settlers bid for expansion in three locations
Ma’an News
Israeli settlers launched a series of actions on Friday in a bid to take over more West Bank land from Palestinians. In the city of Hebron settlers began planting Palestinian-owned land under military guard in an apparent takeover attempt. Settlers from the illegal Israeli colony of Kiryat Arba moved on to land belonging to Muhammad Mustafa Jaber, in the Al-Beqa’a area, outside of Hebron. Jaber told Ma’an Israeli soldiers blocked his family from reaching the land. A similar incident took place last week when soldiers cordoned off his land to make way for the settlers’ activities…

Barracks and Burger King: U.S. Builds a Supersized Base in Afghanistan
David Wood
Anyone who thinks the Afghanistan troop “surge” is a temporary, one-time deal should watch the construction here of a vast new $17 million barracks building. It’s not temporary. It’s three stories of concrete. Eight years after American forces scattered the Taliban and effectively conquered Afghanistan, the United States is embarked on a frenzied $220 million building campaign at this sprawling and still expanding military air base. Just to meet the base’s demand for fresh concrete, it has two of its own cement factories working full time…

Israeli settlers attack Palestinian citizens expelled from their building
Palestinian Information Center
Israeli settlers attacked at noon Saturday the sit-in tent established in front of Al-Ghaoui building whose residents were forced out by the Israeli authorities and threw stones and empty bottles at the Palestinian citizens and Al-Ghaoui family in the tent which led to the injury of four of them. Palestinian eyewitness told the Palestinian information center (PIC) reporter that the settlers pointed their guns at the Palestinian protesters in the tents, adding that the Israeli police came to the scene and kidnapped a Palestinian citizen called Khaled Al-Ghaoui…

Village of Bil’in calls on Amnesty International to withdraw from Leonard Cohen concert
International Solidarity Movement (ISM)
…We, members of the Bil’in popular committee against the wall and settlements, have always appreciated Amnesty International’s role in the defense of human rights around the world and have recognized you as partners in our own struggle to defend our rights. We remember with great pleasure and pride your December, 2006 visit to our village to witness one of our protests. For these reasons we were surprised and deeply disturbed to learn that Amnesty International is sponsoring Leonard Cohen’s upcoming concert in Israel….

A Small First Step In Cleaning Up the West’s Middle East Mess
Franklin Lamb
It is hard to believe that it has already been three years since July 13 and 15, 2006, when American MK 82 and MK 83, 500 and 1,000 lb. bombs, and four US TOW missiles, gifted to Israel, destroyed Lebanon’s oil storage facility at Jiyeh, 30 kilometers south of Beirut. The attack at Jiyeh was one of more than 12,000 Israeli air force bombing missions during the 33 day attack on Lebanon, as its navy fired 2,500 missiles as its Army fired over 100,000 shells…

As Long as the Wars Continue, We Must Resist Them
Ron Jacobs
…Meanwhile, the US antiwar movement founders in the wake of a substantial part of its membership giving their collective soul to the Democratic Party. Since November 2008, it’s as if the bloodshed perpetrated by US policy in Iraq and Afghanistan is okay because Barack Obama is leading the charge instead of George Bush. Besides the National Assembly’s call for local and regional protests against the Iraq occupation and Afghan war in October, there has been barely a peep from other national antiwar organizations. This is despite the fact that Congress and Obama have approved several more billion dollars for the wars and the size of the US force in Afghanistan has nearly doubled while the promised withdrawal of US forces in Iraq has not even begun….

“Breaking the Silence” or silencing the critics?
Louis Frankenthaler, The Electronic Intifada
“Breaking the Silence” is a member of the Israeli human rights, peace and social justice community. The group’s only crime, so it seems, lies in its effort to offer an alternative ethical voice in a society that is arguably losing its way. Breaking the Silence provides a platform for soldiers to testify to acts of violence and other violations of Palestinian rights that they may have witnessed or taken part in during their service in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. The group’s most recent report details soldier testimonies that raised serious concerns about Israeli military behavior during the war on Gaza, “Operation Cast Lead.” The publication is unique but it is only one example of many public statements, reports and legal advocacy in response to the prosecution of the war, which Israel consistently maintains was both moral and legal. Why then is the Israeli government waging a battle against this organization, trying to thwart its funding and, essentially, to shut it down?…

COULD ISRAEL SURVIVE WITHOUT ‘ENEMIES’?
Desertpeace
OY….. Perish the thought! Without enemies… What would happen to the multi billion dollar defense funds it receives from the US government? What would happen to zionist hate groups such as the ADL?? What would happen to AIPAC??? Zionism MUST maintain its ’status quo’ systems which keep Israel as it is, a hateful, racist state. They therefore continue to create ‘enemies’ to justify the whining that comes with the situation…

LENIN’S TOMB
There was an understated news report on the BBC yesterday which informed viewers that Hillary Clinton was threatening Eritrea with ‘action’. The US is accusing Eritrea of supporting the insurgents against what the BBC characterises as Somalia’s ‘unity government’, and promising more weapons for its clients. Clinton claims that the ‘al-Shahab’ insurgents are liable to become a “threat” to the United States and “launch attacks against countries far and near”. That rootless, worldwide conspiracy against freedom just will not go to bed…

Abbas endorsed as Fatah chief
Aljazeera.net
Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, has been re-elected as leader of the Fatah movement by delegates attending the party conference in Bethlehem. Abbas, who stood unopposed for the position, was elected by consensus on Saturday through a show of hands from the 2,300 delegates attending the conference. Technically Abbas is elected for five years – until a new conference is announced -but as this is the first time Fatah members have met in two decades, it is not clear how long his mandate will actually last…
