Poem “Hiroshima”
Sherwood Ross
…Fearing for my wife and family
I ran back into the city
Where I saw hundreds and hundreds fleeing
Every one of them hurt in some way.
The eyebrows of some were burned off
Skin hung from their faces and hands
Some were vomiting as they walked
On some naked bodies the burns had made patterns
Of the shapes of flowers transferred
From their kimonos to human skin…

IDF “Child Killing Unit” Speaks Out
Irish4Palestine
Today another former member of the IDF’s “Child Killing Unit” speaks out. And again, we see that Israel has a long standing policy of killing children, torturing children, jailing children, and, get this, using “Military Tribunals” to try children aged 16. Witness the sickness of these people: “You take the kid, you blindfold him, you handcuff him, he’s really shaking… Sometimes you cuff his legs too. Sometimes it cuts off the circulation. “

No, Netanyahu never visited that nuke reactor. So what if there are photos?
Neal Ungerleider
Fun little propaganda moment here in Israel. The Israeli press recently went gaga over Prime Minister Netanhayu’s visit to the “secret” nuclear reactor in Dimona. Although Israel has never admitted to having nuclear weapons, it’s widely known that the facility outside the Negev town of Dimona is the nerve center of the country’s nuke operations. The visit was publicized by the government…

Israeli occupation and western taxpayers
Helena Cobban
…There are many very significant ways in which tax monies or tax breaks from western governments do things that support not only the continuation of Israel’s occupation of the OPTs but also its illegal implantation of Jewish settlers into the West Bank. There are a few ways in which western governments send much, much smaller amounts of financial aid to NGOs that in various ways help save the resilience of the Palestinian people. We who are citizens of these western countries are directly morally implicated in all these activities of our governments. We should take responsibility for them, and find ways to end the occupation now…

The Uncensored Anger Manifesto – Part VI
Layla Anwar, An Arab Woman Blues
So did you miss it ? Did you miss the uncensored parts ? It’s been a long time, has it not ? Some of you may argue, it’s all anger. Wrong, dead wrong. There is general anger, and there is specific anger. The uncensored Anger Manifestos, like your fucking Karl Marx, or Marxists, or leftists ( hahahahaha) , are very specific. They are directed straight at you…

The Real World: Mercenaries, Murder and the American Way
Chris Floyd
Who could possibly have suspected this? A Beltway-wired mercenary company hired by the American government to act as freebooting muscle in the war of aggression against Iraq has been accused — in sworn affidavits from company insiders — of operating a murder and gun-running racket in order to push its hard-right owner’s religious extremism. Can such a thing even be contemplated? Why, the next thing you know, they’ll be telling us that good, clean-limbed, all-American agents used KGB-derived torture tactics against helpless captives or something!…

Israeli court asks evicted families to prove they lived in their own homes
Palestinian Information Center
An Israeli court has asked the families of Hanun and Ghawi, who were evicted from their homes by the Israeli occupation authority, to prove that they lived in their own homes and that they were forcibly evacuated from them. Sources close to the two families said on Thursday that members of the two families asked neighbors to testify before the court that they lived in their homes and that the Israeli occupation policemen forced them out to the street…

Israeli rabbis ban marriage for Jewish ‘untouchables’
350,000 immigrants classed as ‘without religion’
by Jonathan Cook
Two immigrants from the former Soviet Union staged a very public wedding in the streets of central Tel Aviv this week to highlight the plight of hundreds of thousands of Jews barred from lawfully marrying in Israel. Nico Tarosyan and Olga Samosvatov chose to tie the knot in a special ceremony on Tuesday — watched by family, friends and curious passers-by — after Orthodox rabbis had denied them the right to wed. The rabbinate says that Mr Tarosyan cannot prove he is Jewish according to its strict standards and therefore should not marry Ms Samosvatov, who is considered a proper Jew…

Obama mortgage plan aids banks, not homeowners
By David Walsh
The Obama administration’s home mortgage modification program, launched with great fanfare earlier this year, has assisted a mere fraction of those in danger of losing their homes, and the outrage of homeowners is growing. According to a US Treasury report August 4, mortgage servicers, under the Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP), have offered to change 406,500 liens and have actually modified, on a three-month trial basis, only some 235,000, just 9 percent of delinquent borrowers…

TV blackout and boycott mar Ahmadinejad’s swearing-in
By Katherine Butler, Independent
The man who is now formally Iran’s President for the next four years cut an isolated figure as he took his oath of office yesterday. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was sworn in for a second term at a ceremony boycotted by scores of parliamentarians, leading clerics and other important figures who would normally have been expected to attend. Out on the streets demonstrators, many in black T-shirts to symbolise mourning, or wearing green, the colour of the campaign run by defeated opposition challenger Mirhossein Mousavi, marked what ought to have been a celebratory occasion by chanting “Death to the Dictator”…

Coup regime steps up repression in Honduras
By Rafael Azul
Demonstrations in Honduras against the government of de facto President Roberto Micheletti and the military forces that seized power on June 28 and expelled President José Manuel Zelaya have continued in the face of mounting repression. In an attempt to quash opposition to the coup, the government has brought back the brutal tactics of the dictatorship of the 1970s and early 1980s. On Friday July 24, construction worker Pedro Magdiel Muñoz was dragged down the sidewalk by an army officer and detained. His body was found near a coffee processing plant early the next morning showing signs of beatings and torture. His right hand and arm where black and blue from being bound. He had been hacked to death. Magdiel Muñoz was part of a group of demonstrators who were marching on the Nicaraguan border to welcome Zelaya back into Honduras…

This is how the PA treats Palestinian journalists
By Khalid Amayreh in Bethlehem
The Palestinian Authority (PA) doesn’t stop surprising us with its boundless stupidity and foolish behaviors. On 4 August, I, like many other journalists, decided to travel to Bethlehem to cover Fatah’s much-heralded and long-awaited Sixth conference. Security was tight and thousands of policemen had been deployed all over the traditional birthplace of Jesus. This generated a lot of consternation among the locals who had to walk long distances to reach their homes and businesses…

Israeli troops ‘ill-treat kids’
BBC News
A former Israeli military commander has told the BBC that Palestinian youngsters are routinely ill-treated by Israeli soldiers while in custody, reports the BBC’ s Katya Adler from Jerusalem and the West Bank. “You take the kid, you blindfold him, you handcuff him, he’s really shaking… Sometimes you cuff his legs too. Sometimes it cuts off the circulation. “He doesn’t understand a word of what’s going on around him. He doesn’t know what you’re going to do with him. He just knows we are soldiers with guns. That we kill people. Maybe they think we’re going to kill him…

Blackwater accused of murder in ‘crusade to eliminate Muslims’
Tim Reid, Times
A series of allegations including murder, weapons smuggling and the deliberate slaughter of civilians have been levelled against the founder of Blackwater, the security company being investigated for shooting deaths in Iraq. The accusations, including a claim that the company founder Erik Prince either murdered or had killed former employees co-operating with federal investigators, are contained in sworn affidavits lodged at a Virginia court on Monday night…

Comrade Mezher greets Fateh conference and calls it to reject “peace process”
Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine -PFLP
Comrade Jamil Mezher, member of the Central Committee of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, called upon the sixth conference of the Fateh movement to restore the role of Fateh in the national struggle and reject the illusions of the so-called “peace process.” Comrade Mezher spoke with Al-Jazeera satellite channel about the Fateh conference on Tuesday, August 4, 2009, the date of the conference’s opening. He expressed his best wishes for the success of the conference, saying that success must mean a rejection of the last 15 years of the so-called “peace process” and Oslo, which have been a disaster for our people, and instead a reaffirmation of Fateh’s role in struggling for Palestinian national rights…

GI Special 7H3: Haditha Point Of View [ 4 August 2009 ]
Thomas F. Barton
On Sunday, a car bomb exploded in a busy market in Haditha, in the western, majority-Sunni province of Anbar, killing at least six people and wounding 21. On Friday, a string of attacks on Shiite mosques in Baghdad killed 29 people. Haditha residents blamed the attack on U.S. soldiers who, they said, were patrolling in the town two hours before the bombing. U.S. troops withdrew from urban areas before a June 30 deadline and now carry out joint missions with the Iraqi army. “The U.S. Army attracts bombs like garbage attracts rats,” said Khalil Ahmad, who owns a store in the market where the bomb blew up.

Afghans Protest as NATO Insists Slain Civilians Were ‘Insurgents’

What if Obama’s Middle East Strategy Failed?
Three Palestinian Intellectuals Voice Their Opinions
Khalid Amayreh
…Obama’s consistent demands that Israel freezes its constantly rabid settlement expansion in the West Bank and East al-Quds (Jerusalem) made many Arabs and Muslims, as well as people of good will around the globe, think that the United States may finally have decided to introduce some evenhandedness and fairness to its erstwhile brazenly pro-Israeli policy. However, there are those who are not willing to give Obama the benefit of the doubt, not only because they keep hearing nearly daily statements from Washington asserting America’s “iron-clad” commitment to Israeli security, but also because Israel is effectively flying in the face of Obama and telling him “do what you may, we are not going to heed your calls.”…

Gaza power company: One of the electric units will stop due to fuel shortage
Palestinian Information Center
The Gaza electricity company warned that one of its electric generating units would stop on Friday or Sturday if the Israeli authorities did no allow in additional quantities of fuel needed to operate the station. The company’s director Suhail Sakik said that the amount of electricity distributed to the networks in Gaza would shrink if this unit stopped and thus number of power outages would increase in light of the shortage of fuel…

GI Special 7H2: How About More? [ 2 August 2009 ]
Thomas F. Barton
On a bleak and sweltering plain littered with rusty Soviet tanks, pairs of grimacing military recruits crawled beneath a barbed-wire net one recent morning, dragging their rifles through the dust. Two trainers followed, shouting at them to move faster and stooping to correct their movements. The training session was part of an ambitious campaign, backed by the United States and Britain, to increase the Afghan National Army’s ranks from 88,000 to 134,000 men in the next three years. One recent source of friction has been the decision by the U.S. government, which funds most of the army’s training and equipment, to replace Soviet-made Kalashnikov assault rifles, the standard Afghan weapon for the past 30 years, with American-made M-16s. Since February, Afghan troops have been required to train with the M-16.
