Twenty-First-Century Colonialism in Iraq
Tom Engelhardt & Michael Schwartz
…One way to “free up” the American military for withdrawal would, of course, be if the Iraqi military could manage the pacification mission alone. But don’t expect that any time soon. According to media reports, if all goes well, this isn’t likely to occur for at least a decade. One telltale sign of this is the pervasive presence of American military advisors still embedded in Iraqi combat units. First Lt. Matthew Liebal, for example, “sits every day beside Lt. Col Mohammed Hadi,” the commander of the Iraqi 43rd Army Brigade that patrols eastern Baghdad. When it comes to the Iraqi military, this sort of supervision won’t be temporary. After all, the military the U.S. helped create in Iraq still lacks, among other things, significant logistical capability, heavy artillery, and an air force. Consequently, U.S. forces transport and re-supply Iraqi troops, position and fire high-caliber ordnance, and supply air support when needed…

The families driven apart by Israel’s red tape
New regulations are making it increasingly difficult for Palestinians from Gaza to see their relatives in the West Bank
By Donald Macintyre
…a new and classified Israeli government document reveals that already heavy restrictions on Palestinian movement from Gaza to the West Bank have been tightened further. The document came to light after a Supreme Court challenge by the Israeli human rights organisation HaMoked. It says the Deputy Defence Minister Matan Vilnai “established that in every case involving the settlement of Gaza residents in the Judaea and Samaria area [West Bank] one should adopt the most restrictive policy… [and he] clarified that a family relationship in and of itself does not qualify as a humanitarian reason that would justify settlement by Gaza residents [in the West Bank]”. HaMoked and another human rights organisation, Gisha, are convinced that security has nothing to do with a policy which they say undermines a two-state solution by “deepening and formalising” the separation between the two territories…

The journey to Gaza begins
‘After five days in Cairo, we are ready to set off with vehicles and medical supplies’
Michael Prysner
Iraq war veteran and ANSWER Coalition representative Michael Prysner reports on the Viva Palestina delegation’s journey to challenge the Israeli blockade of Gaza and deliver humanitarian supplies. We filled New York’s JFK airport on July 4 with Palestinian flags and kaffiyehs, chanting “Viva, Viva Palestina!” as hundreds of international travelers watched us unload a truck full of wheelchairs, walkers and medical aid. This powerful image was a visual reminder of the hundreds of people in Gaza who have endured amputations and crippling injuries from U.S. munitions fired by Israel during the recent December-January massacre. The cruel Israeli blockade prevents even wheelchairs from entering Gaza.

Was The CIA Hiding Cheney’s “Executive Assassination Ring”?
Sam Stein
The revelation from seven Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee that they were misled about a critical CIA program has sparked a debate that touches on the most sensitive areas of national security policy. What program, exactly, was being kept secret? No one is answering the question, citing the sensitivities that come when discussing classified intelligence matters. But in various conversations with sources on and off the Hill, two general theories have emerged. The first is that the CIA was keeping quiet about the use of waterboarding on terrorist suspects. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has said she was misled by the intelligence agency on that very subject. It’s also the story told to the Huffington Post by a source with knowledge of the letter the seven House Democrats penned to CIA chief Leon Panetta, in which they complained about being misled…

US Agrees to Settlement Building: Maariv
IslamOnline.net
The Obama administration has reportedly back-down on its earlier demand for a full freeze of Jewish settlement activities, allowing Israel to continue building 2500 settlement units in the occupied Palestinian territories and linking the freeze to a pan-Arab normalization with Tel Aviv. Israel’s mass-circulation daily Maariv reported on Wednesday, July 8, that the understanding was reached during a meeting between Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak and US Mideast peace envoy George Michel in London…

Taliban Iron Net Vs American Dagger
By Aamir Latif, IOL Correspondent
Insisting that the massive American Dagger offensive is toothless, the Taliban have launched their own “iron net” counter operation. “We have chalked out our strategy to counter the fresh offensive of US marines in Helmand, Uruzgan and Kandahar provinces and Inshaullah the foreign forces will concede another defeat,” Yousaf Ahmedi, a senior Taliban commander, told IslamOnline.net by satellite phone from an unknown location in southern Afghanistan. “We have codenamed our counter operation the iron net. And it will actually turn out to be an iron net for the marines and their allies.”…

The silence of the souqs
By Nesreen Melek. Axis of Logic
During the government of President Saddam Hussein, the coppersmith souq in Baghdad’s al-Safafir marketplace was a bustling, productive shop. Copper was beaten in the old traditional way into pots and pitchers of all shapes and sizes. The noise was great and so was the sight. Shops spilled over with copperware for household or decorative uses, to suit all tastes – primitive, austere, elaborate, highly ornate. The Souqs have been tragically silenced and all has been destroyed in the brutal invasion and continuing occupation by the U.S. military. Below, Nesreen Melek tells of her recent visit to the al-Safafir Souqs in Baghdad…

An interview with an Iranian socialist: “Electoral Fraud” and the movement in Iran today
by Ted Sprague, In Defence of Marxism
..What is definitely incorrect is to call our Great Revolution of 1979 an “Islamic Revolution”. It was not. It was a popular revolution against the monarchy and for Freedom and Equality which was hijacked, with the help of the western governments, by the reactionary Khomeini and mullahs. You have to remember that Political Islam would have had no real chance to take power in Iran if it had not been for the aid of western governments. They found this dead corpse in the dustbin of history and brought it back to life because they realised its anti-left and oppressive potential. That needs a longer discussion… As to the relation of the current movement to that revolution…well, if you ask me I’d like to say that I hope the current revolutionary movement will fulfil the goals that the 1979 revolution failed to achieve because of its defeat by counter-revolutionary mullahs…

Law will let Afghan husbands starve wives who withhold sex
By Jerome Starkey in Bamiyan
An Afghan law which legalised rape has been sent back to parliament with a clause letting husbands starve their wives if they refuse to have sex…According to civil society groups, the law, which regulates the personal affairs of Afghanistan’s minority Shia community, still includes clauses which allow rapists to marry their victims as a way of absolving their crime and it tacitly approves child marriage. The law sparked riots in Kabul. Hundreds of Shia women took to the streets in protest. They were attacked by mobs of angry men who launched counter demonstrations outside the capital’s largest Shia madrassa…Critics claim that Mr Karzai signed the law to appease Shia leaders, ahead of the presidential polls on 20 August…
