When Torture Kills: Ten Murders In US Prisons In Afghanistan
Andy Worthington
There’s been a lot of discussion in the last few days about the long-awaited (and twice-delayed) release of the 2004 CIA Inspector General’s Report, which, as Glenn Greenwald explained on Tuesday, “aggressively question[s] both the efficacy and legality” of the Bush administration’s interrogation tactics in the “War on Terror.” As Greenwald also explained : In anticipation of the release of that report, there is an important effort underway — as part of the ACLU Accountability Project — to correct a critically important deficiency in the public debate over torture and accountability. So often, the premise of media discussions of torture is that “torture” is something that was confined to a single tactic (waterboarding) and used only on three “high-value” detainees accused of being high-level al-Qaeda operatives. The reality is completely different. The interrogation and detention regime implemented by the US resulted in the deaths of over 100 detainees in US custody — at least [see “Command’s Responsibility,” a Human Rights First report from 2006, PDF]…

Iran Divided & the ‘October Suprise’
Robert Parry
Iran’s current political divisions can be traced back to a controversy nearly three decades ago when Iran faced war with Iraq and became entwined with U.S. and Israeli political maneuvers that set all three countries on a dangerous course that continues to this day. In the election dispute now gripping the streets of Tehran, Iran is experiencing a revival of the internal rivalries born in the judgments made in 1980 and later that decade about how and whether to deal with the Little Satan (Israel) and the Great Satan (the United States)…

Why Jerusalem? – Israel’s Hidden Agenda
By Dan Lieberman – Jerusalem
Three huge granite stones rest comfortably on the top of Midbar Sinai Street, in Givat Havatzim, Jerusalem’s northernmost district. Cut to specification, the imposing stones represent one of several preparations by the Temple Mount and Land of Israel Faithful Movement’s to erect a Third Temple on the Haram al-Sharif/Temple Mount. Since the Islamic Wafq owns and controls all the property on the Haram al-Sharif, by what means can these stones be transferred to the Temple Mount and how can a Temple be constructed there? Not by any legal means. The stones are a provocation, which the Israel government refuses to halt. Neglect and passivity lead to a belief that an eventual Muslim reaction to the increasing provocations will give Israel an excuse to seize total control of the Holy Basin – the ultimate of the properties that Israel intends to incorporate into a greater Jerusalem…

While the U.S. Dilly Dallies on Honduras, We Continue to Support a Right-Wing Thug in Colombia
Liliana Segura, AlterNet
With all eyes suddenly on Honduras over the expulsion of President Manuel Zelaya, few were paying attention when President Barack Obama quietly met with Colombian president and staunch U.S. ally Alvaro Uribe this week. Protests over the coup in Tegucigalpa were met with spurious claims that the left-leaning “Mel” Zelaya was seeking an illegal re-election bid through a revamping of the Honduran Constitution. Meanwhile, at the White House, Uribe found himself dodging questions about re-election plans of his own…

Pakistanis Reject U.S. “Aid” Flights, As Lawsuit is Filed Against U.S. Drone Attacks
Jeremy Scahill
Damn those ungrateful Pakistanis. After U.S. drone attacks killed more than 600 of their people since 2006—most of them civilians—it seems they think they have some right to say they don’t want the U.S. flying its “aid” planes to Swat and other “tribal areas.” The New York Times reports that “the Pakistani authorities have refused to allow American workers or planes to distribute the aid in the camps for displaced people.”..

The suppressed fact: Deaths by U.S. torture
Glenn Greenwald
…The interrogation and detention regime implemented by the U.S. resulted in the deaths of over 100 detainees in U.S. custody — at least. While some of those deaths were the result of “rogue” interrogators and agents, many were caused by the methods authorized at the highest levels of the Bush White House, including extreme stress positions, hypothermia, sleep deprivation and others…

Israel and Hamas both reject Amnesty’s Gaza findings
Ma’an News
The de facto Information Ministry in Gaza on Thursday rejected findings by Amnesty International that Hamas committed war crimes during the Israeli assault last winter. Responding to a report released on Thursday that termed projectile attacks on Israeli targets as unlawful, the ministry said Amnesty was “treating the victim and the perpetrator equally,” according to a statement sent to Ma’an. “Ignoring the main reasons behind what is happening is providing a cover for killing and expelling, and justifies the [Gaza] siege, which is in violation of international law,” the Hamas-run ministry added…

Eager to Tap Iraq’s Vast Oil Reserves, Industry Execs Suggested Invasion
Jason Leopold
Two years before the invasion of Iraq, oil executives and foreign policy advisers told the Bush administration that the United States would remain “a prisoner of its energy dilemma” as long as Saddam Hussein was in power. That April 2001 report, “Strategic Policy Challenges for the 21st Century,” was prepared by the James A. Baker Institute for Public Policy and the U.S. Council on Foreign Relations at the request of then-Vice President Dick Cheney. In retrospect, it appears that the report helped focus administration thinking on why it made geopolitical sense to oust Hussein, whose country sat on the world’s second largest oil reserves…

US launches major Afghan assault
Aljaeera.net
US forces have launched a major military operation in southern Afghanistan in the first big push to drive the Taliban out of a key stronghold since Barack Obama became US president. Four thousand marines, backed by Nato aircraft and a 650-strong Afghan force, are moving into towns in Helmand province, where the Taliban has been intensifying its challenge to the Kabul government and allied forces. Pentagon officials say the plan – said to be the largest US marine offensive since Vietnam – is not just to inflict casualties against the enemy, but to dig in and hold on to territory…

Netanyahu’s “Peace” Plan
Ethnic Cleansing as State Policy
By NICOLA NASSER
In his speech at Bar Ilan University on June 14, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu proposed a new Israeli “peace plan,” with preconditions that a Palestinian negotiator must first meet before he would “promptly” engage in “unconditional” bilateral talks to meet an international consensus demanding the creation of a Palestinian state alongside Israel. His preconditions added to the fourteen conditions the former Israeli government of comatose Ariel Sharon attached to Israel’s adoption in grudge of the 2003 Road Map blueprint for peace with the Palestinian side, on the basis of which the U.S. administration of President Barak Obama and his presidential envoy George Mitchell are now urging an early resumption of “immediate” Israeli – Palestinian peace talks, which Mitchell on June 26 hoped “very much to conclude this phase of the discussions and to be able to move into meaningful and productive negotiations in the near future.”..

Chávez sides with the clerical dictatorship against Iran’s youth, workers and women
League for the Fifth International.
… Revolutionary socialists should certainly support Iran (and Venezuela) unconditionally against economic blockades, threats and any military attacks coming from the United Sates and its Zionist puppet. But this does not in any way oblige us to support a dictatorship against its own working class. The “Iranian Revolution” that Chávez refers to was strangled between 1979-82 by the very people who now rule Iran…

ACLU: Obama Admin. Relying On Tortured Confession In Habeas Case
Jason Leopold
The American Civil Liberties Union accused the Obama administration in court papers Wednesday of relying on statements obtained through torture to support the indefinite detention of a prisoner being held at Guantanamo Bay who the civil rights organization is defending. In a 37-page legal brief, portions of which are redacted, the ACLU asked a U.S. District Court Judge overseeing the case to suppress all statements obtained against their client through torture. The habeas corpus case involves Mohammed Jawad, an Afghan who was believed to be 12-years-old when he was captured in December 2002, was “subjected to repeated torture and other mistreatment and to a systematic and sustained program of highly coercive interrogation” on more than 50 occasions. The Department of Defense claims Jawad was as old as 17 when he was arrested…

AI: Impunity for war crimes in Gaza and southern Israel a recipe for further civilian suffering
AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL
Israeli forces killed hundreds of unarmed Palestinian civilians and destroyed thousands of homes in Gaza in attacks which breached the laws of war, Amnesty International concluded in a new report published on Thursday. Operation ‘Cast Lead’: 22 days of death and destruction, is the first comprehensive report to be published on the conflict, which took place earlier this year. “Israel’s failure to properly investigate its forces’ conduct in Gaza, including war crimes, and its continuing refusal to cooperate with the UN international independent fact-finding mission headed by Richard Goldstone, is evidence of its intention to avoid public scrutiny and accountability,” said Donatella Rovera, who headed a field research mission to Gaza and southern Israel during and after the conflict…

Release Of The “Holy Grail” Of Torture Reports Delayed Again
ANDY WORTHINGTON
Today was supposed to be the day that the Justice Department — after two delays — released an unclassified version of the CIA Inspector General’s 2004 Report into the interrogations of “high-value detainees” in the “War on Terror,” which Democrat Congressional staffers described as the “holy grail,” according to Greg Sargent of the Plum Line, writing in May, “because it is expected to detail torture in unprecedented detail and to cast doubt on the claim that torture works.”…
