To A Father…
Layla Anwar, Uncensored Arabwomanblues
…And of course, being an Iraqi, I cannot but think of the thousands of Iraqi fathers, however imperfect and “patriarchal” they may be…I can’t help think of how much they have already sacrificed either with their own lives, forsaking it all – family, wife, children, fortune, fame – for a higher cause, for a higher Logos… I cannot but pay tribute and reverence to those who sacrificed worldly matters for a just higher cause/mission… I cannot but pay my respects to those who are still in cages, imprisoned in an eternal night, dying to see the light of day, who despite the horrendous torture they are subjected to, have only one wish, greater than dying – that of seeing their wives and children one more time…I cannot but acknowledge the thousands of fathers, who labor day and night with a great sense of guilt, angst, worry…to provide for their families… I cannot but honor the Iraqi man, whose daily life is made of extreme hardships, humiliations, dangers, risks and sacrifices… This is his way of loving under Occupation. And to Him I dedicate this post.

Regrouping Against Repression in Iran
Reza Fiyouzat, Revolutionary Flowerpot Society
…And PA’LEEEEASE stop the nonsense fantasies (you’re not fooling anybody, stop fooling yourself) that, by standing with a theocratic machine, you’re defending the ‘Muslim world’. What a bunch of ignorant, patronizing Orientalist horse shit! ‘The Muslim World’; as if it’s this homogenous thing (and it has to be a ‘thing’, since no social grouping of such a huge magnitude and diversity can so lazily be portrayed as something totally homogenous) existing without a trace of any deep, internal divisions like class divisions, gender divisions, people-v-state divisions, ideological divisions; as if this thing does not consist of countless nationalities, hundreds of language groups, living across the oceans and continents, in numerous metropolitan centers, and all the way to the most underdeveloped rural areas; as if this thing presented as a monolith is not, in short, actually fractured a thousandfold just like the ‘Christian world’, the ‘Jewish world’ and the ‘Buddhist World’. The real insult in this ‘thinking’ is that it actually equates a vicious theocratic dictatorship, protected by hired shock-troops shooting unarmed, peaceful demonstrators in the streets as representative of the ‘Muslim World’!! In defense of its muddle headed views, desperation must indeed need to resort to absurdities…

Gaza Bonanza
Yotam Feldman and Uri Blau
Every week, about 10 officers from the Israel Defense Force’s Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT?) unit convene in the white Templer building in the Kirya, the Defense Ministry compound in Tel Aviv, to decide which food products will appear on the tables of the 1.5 million inhabitants of the Gaza Strip. Among those taking part in the discussion are Colonel Moshe Levi, head of the Gaza District Coordination Office (DCO), Colonel Alex Rosenzweig, head of the civil division of COGAT and Colonel Doron Segal, head of the economics division. These officers decided, for example, that persimmons, bananas and apples were vital items for basic sustenance and thus permitted into the Gaza Strip, while apricots, plums, grapes and avocados were impermissible luxuries. Over the past year, these officers were responsible for prohibiting the entry into the Gaza Strip of tinned meat, tomato paste, clothing, shoes and notebooks. All these items are sitting in the giant storerooms rented by Israeli suppliers near the Kerem Shalom crossing, awaiting a change in policy. The policy is not fixed, but continually subject to change, explains a COGAT official. Thus, about two months ago, the COGAT officials allowed pumpkins and carrots into Gaza, reversing a ban that had been in place for many months. The entry of “delicacies” such as cherries, kiwi, green almonds, pomegranates and chocolate is expressly prohibited. As is halvah, too, most of the time…

Taliban Controls 11 Districts in Afghanistan
Parwiz Shamal
Afghan Interior Ministry said the Taliban militants rule 11 districts and threatens more than 150 others country-wide. Minister Mohammad Hanif Atmar told a conference on Sunday that at least 120 Afghan districts – mostly in the southern Afghanistan – are at serious risk. “There are some 40 other districts across the country that militants are present or have influence, but those are not of serious concerns for us,” Minister Atmar added…

Video: Palestinian homes on sale to ‘private buyers’
AljaeeraEnglish
One of the issues sharply dividing Israelis and Palestinians is the so-called right of return to Israel by refugees from the 1948 war. Most of the property they abandoned has been held by the Israeli government. But as Dan Nolan reports, it has now begun to sell Palestinian properties to private buyers…

Palestinian plots up for grabs
By Dan Nolan in Haifa, Aljazeera.net
A Palestinian advocacy group is accusing Israel of removing by stealth, what Palestinians see as a one of the key elements of any future peace deal – the right of return for refugees. Adalah, a legal centre for Arab rights in Israel, claims that the possibility of Palestinians returning to the homes they left in what is now Israel is slowly being eroded away by the sale of an increasing number of their properties to private individuals. In most cases, the original owners are either in exile or unable to afford the prices offered by tender on the Israel land administration website…

Israel’s new budget to allocate $250 million for settlements
AFP
Israel plans to allocate 250 million dollars over the next two years for settlements in the occupied West Bank despite US pressure to halt settlement activity, army radio said on Sunday. The figure is contained in the 2009-2010 budget, which passed its first reading in the Knesset parliament last week, it said. Some 125 million dollars (90 million euros) is to be used for various security expenses, with most of the rest destined for housing construction, it said. The Peace Now anti-settlement watchdog said that the settlement spending in the two-year budget was likely to be higher and “spread over several sections of the budget.”…

84-year-old holocaust survivor Hedy Epstein likely attacked by Zionist thugs
gazasolidarity
An “inspirational” speaker for 15 years at the Missouri Scholars Academy was attacked this week after visiting the Columbia camp. Hedy Epstein, an 84-year-old Holocaust survivor, was walking to her home from a Metrolink station in St. Louis on Wednesday when someone pushed her hard from behind. She fell to the ground and lay in a state of shock, bleeding profusely from her chin. The attack occurred so quickly, Epstein said, that she thought she saw a man running but can’t remember what he looked like. She forced herself to get home and called a friend when the bleeding would not stop. At the hospital, doctors determined an artery had been nicked. Epstein is part of a movement opposed to Israel’s treatment of Gaza and has received threatening messages…

Video: Gaza: 50+ bullets for a fishing boat
Fishing Under Fire
This video shows a Palestinian fishing boat attacked by the Israeli Navy BEFORE the recent massacres (December 2009, January 2009), that means during the 6 month “CEASEFIRE” (June – December 2008). Finally we counted more than 50 bulletholes!
During the interview gunboats of the Israeli Navy were continuing to patrol in Palestinian territorial waters, very close to the shore (for sure closer than the 3 miles “limit” that they suppose to impose) and harassing Palestinian fishing boats…

Britain: For a war crimes trial over Iraq invasion
Julie Hyland
…The prosecution of high-ranking Nazis at the end of the Second World War established that the deliberate commissioning of an aggressive war constituted a criminal violation of international law. Indeed, this was the first charge leveled against the Nazi leadership. As the International Tribunal convened in Nuremberg explained: “To initiate a war of aggression … is not only an international crime, it is the supreme international crime, differing from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole.” In the case of the Iraq war, this “accumulated evil” has found its malignant expression in mass killings, torture, “extraordinary rendition,” illegal detention and far-reaching attacks on basic democratic rights of the working class. What is called for is not yet another government-sponsored inquiry into the Iraq war, but the assembling of a war crimes tribunal to prosecute Bush, Blair and their co-conspirators for their murderous actions…

A question of solidarity
LENIN’S TOMB
…There is no doubt that Mousavi stands for neoliberal economic policies, while also offering some political liberalisation to inspire progressive supporters. Mousavi, who bore substantial political responsibility for pushing through the nationalisation programme in the 1980s, now supports further privatization, and is in favour of constitutional amendments to make this easier. We also know that while Ahmadinejad initially expressed reservations about the agenda of liberalising state enterprises, one of his major planks of reform during his term was the proposal to privatise 80% of state assets, half of the shares of which were to be distributed through the stock market, and half to be distributed to those with low incomes. According to Kaveh Ehsani, despite the decision to distribute shares to the poor, the likely result is the radical reconstitution of wealth and political power on the Russian model post-1990. In 2007, under Ahmadinejad, the scale of privatization reached a record high, with total sales of $5bn…

Another Palestinian in Old Jerusalem forced by Israeli troops to demolish own home
Saed Bannoura – IMEMC
Muhammad Najib Al-Ju’ba, who has lived with his family for generations on Virgin Street near the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, was forced by Israeli troops to demolish his own home this weekend, making the third home demolished in this way this week alone. Israeli demolition orders in Jerusalem have increased exponentially since Binyamin Netanyahu, a right-wing Israeli leader who campaigned on ‘no compromise’ with the Palestinians, came to power in March…

An Open Letter to Iran…
Layla Anwar, An Arab Woman Blues
This is from an Iraqi woman. I will not mess around with words…I know that this is your speciality…it is not mine. I have learned that life is too short lived…and I have no time for words. I will tell you, give it to you the way it is…and the way it is supposed to be. There is a sense of urgency looming over my head. And am getting quite impatient…

“Full Spectrum Dominance: Totalitarian Democracy in the New World Order:”
Review of F. William Engdahl’s book
Stephen Lendman
For over 30 years, F. William Engdahl has been a leading researcher, economist, and analyst of the New World Order with extensive writing to his credit on energy, politics, and economics. He contributes regularly to business and other publications, is a frequent speaker on geopolitical, economic and energy issues, and is a distinguished Research Associate of the Centre for Research on Globalization. Engdahl’s two previous books include “A Century of War: Anglo-American Oil Politics and the New World Order” explaining that America’s post-WW II dominance rests on two pillars and one commodity – unchallengeable military power and the dollar as the world’s reserve currency along with the quest to control global oil and other energy resources…

Settlers set fire to Palestinian home in Susiya
International Solidarity Movement
On Sunday morning at 4 am, some settlers tried to burn a tent in the small village of Susiya, south Hebron hills, with people sleeping inside. The burned tent was used to host international volunteers and guests in the village and as common and social place during the day. Today very early in the morning three young Palestinians were sleeping there when they suddenly realized the tent was starting to burn. With help of other members of the village they were able to stop the fire and call the police. They could not see the settlers who did the action…

Council rejects claims of voting irregularities
CNN
Iran’s election authority has rejected claims of voting irregularities by a defeated presidential candidate, while acknowledging that the number of ballots cast in dozens of cities exceeded the number of eligible voters there, state-run TV reported Monday. Iran’s Guardian Council — which approves all candidates running for office and verifies election results — said candidate Mohsen Rezaie alleged irregularities in 170 cities, and that excessive ballots were found in 50 cities, according to government-funded Press TV. Council spokesman Abbas-Ali Kadkhodaei said voting in those locations did not noticeably affect the outcome of the election… The council declared President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad the winner of the June 12 election…

Journalists held in Iran crackdown
Aljazeera.net
Iran appears to be stepping up its clampdown on the media amid continuing protests over the disputed re-election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian president. At least 24 journalists have been detained by authorities since the protests began a week ago, according to figures from a media watchdog and international media organisations. Among those detained were the head of the Association of Iranian Journalists and a Canadian reporter for Newsweek. The Paris-based Reporters Without Borders (RSF) released the names of 23 Iranian journalists, editors and bloggers arrested since June 14 and said several others were believed to have been detained or had gone into hiding…

GI Special 7F12: “Thank You To The Soldiers” [ 21 June 2009 ]
Thomas F. Barton
There were about 10,000 Mousavi men and women on the streets, with approximately 500 Iranian special forces, trying to keep them apart. It was interesting that the special forces – who normally take the side of Ahmadinejad’s Basij militia – were there with clubs and sticks in their camouflage trousers and their purity white shirts and on this occasion the Iranian military kept them away from Mousavi’s men and women. In fact at one point, Mousavi’s supporters were shouting ‘thank you, thank you’ to the soldiers. One woman went up to the special forces men, who normally are very brutal with Mr Mousavi’s supporters, and said ‘can you protect us from the Basij?’ He said ‘with God’s help’.

GI Special 7F13: The Obvious [ 21 June 2009 ]
Thomas F. Barton
At 7.30 in the morning on 3 June, a seven-month-old baby died in the intensive care unit of the European Gaza Hospital in the Gaza Strip. His name was Zein Ad-Din Mohammed Zu’rob, and he was suffering from a lung infection which was treatable. Denied basic equipment, the doctors in Gaza could do nothing. For weeks, the child’s parents had sought a permit from the Israelis to allow them to take him to a hospital in Jerusalem, where he would have been saved. Like many desperately sick people who apply for these permits, the parents were told they had never applied. … The killing of 1,300 people in what is now a concentration camp merited 17 words, cast as concern for the “security” of the killers. This was understandable. During the January massacre, Seymour Hersh reported that “the Obama team let it be known that it would not object to the planned resupply of ‘smart bombs’ and other hi-tech ordnance that was already flowing to Israel” for use in Gaza.

Iranian MP – Ground paved to pursue Mousavi legally
Reuters
A senior Iranian politician said on Monday the ground was ready to legally pursue moderate defeated presidential election candidate Mirhossein Mousavi for acting against national security by calling for street protests. “Mousavi’s calling for illegal protests and issuing provocative statements have been a source of recent unrests in Iran … Such criminal acts should be confronted firmly,” said Ali Shahrokhi, head of parliament’s judiciary committee, semi-official Fars news agency reported…

Press TV: Iran to release box-by-box vote count
PressTV
Amid claims of a ‘rigged-election’ by certain defeated Iranian presidential candidates, a top election official says the box-by-box details of the vote will be released…His comments came after the country’s highest electoral authority, the Guardian Council, said, “Votes collected in 50 cities surpass the number of people eligible to cast ballots in those areas.” A spokesman for the Council, however, said that the additional votes did not change the outcome of the election, as they were not enough to reverse the reelection of President Ahmadinejad. The extra votes amount to roughly three million ballots…
