Obama’s Obscene Speech in Cairo: Lies in the Service of Death
Arthur Silber
…How would you characterize a person who would act in this manner, who would commit endless murders while always being convinced of his own superiority, of his “right” to dispose of the lives of others, even when those lives number in the millions? Perhaps you would say that he is a brutal serial murderer, without conscience or remorse, without even the smallest appreciation of the unique value of a single human life. You would be entirely justified in describing such behavior as obscene — just as the foreign policy of the United States is obscene, just as Obama’s speech last week was obscene in its overall perspective, as well as in many particulars. To understand this, it is necessary to appreciate some of the central lies told by Obama. That will be our first task. Once we have performed that duty, we will examine certain dualities, and how those dualities serve as a foundational element in Western thought. This traditional emphasis on dualities — and the dichotomy between intentions and actions is only one example — needs to be understood so that we can grasp why so many people offer so much undeserved praise to Obama. Most of us only listen to the words, and we view the words as of much greater importance than the actions of the person who utters them. But in my imagined scenario, what do you think is ultimately of greater significance to the person who is murdered by her lover? His proclamations of undying devotion, or the fact that he has murdered her? You! may wis h to believe that, as she dies, her final thought is, “Ah, but the words were so beautiful…” That certainly would not be my last thought. Would it be yours? Was it the last thought of over a million murdered Iraqis, or of the growing number of people now dying in Afghanistan and Pakistan?…

Back to the Future in Torture Policy
Tom Engelhardt & Alfred W. McCoy
When the Abu Ghraib photos were released in 2004, it seemed that most Americans were shocked by such novel and horrific images, but at least one was not. I’m talking about Alfred McCoy, who had been following the Central Intelligence Agency since the early 1970s, when it unsuccessfully tried to stop the publication of his book, The Politics of Heroin: CIA Complicity in the Global Drug Trade. As soon as McCoy saw the now grimly iconic images of hooded figures, naked men on leashes, and the like, his reaction — even grimmer than that of the rest of us — was recognition. He had long been studying the CIA’s pioneering research into methods of psychological torture. (The Agency had embarked on this project in the early 1950s, initially studying old Soviet and Chinese methods of interrogating and breaking prisoners.) As a result, he knew that what was unique at Abu Ghraib was not the methods of abuse, but those images. Thanks to cell phones and computers, these could be taken in quantity and passed around by anyone in the vicinity. Those photos, he also knew, were no record of aberrations: they represented policy and were recognizably out of the CIA’s several-decade-old torture playbook…

PCHR Is Concerned Over Arrest Campaigns against Fatah Activists in Gaza and against Hamas Activists in the West Bank
PCHR – Palestinian Centre for Human Rights
The Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR) expresses is concern regarding the arrest campaign waged by security services acting on behalf of the governments in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. These campaigns target members of the political opposition: Hamas activists have been arrested in the West Bank, while Fatah activists have been arrested in the Gaza Strip. PCHR reiterates its demand that both governments cease carrying out politically motivated arrests, and immediately release all political prisoners. PCHR is concerned that the arrests of Fatah activists in the Gaza Strip may be a response to the armed clashes between security forces and the ‘Izzidin al-Qassam Brigades (the armed wing of Hamas) in Qalqilya last week, and warns of a possible escalation…

Mir-Hossein Mousavi’s Iran/Contra Connection?
Reza Fiyouzat, Revolutionary Flowerpot Society
What do Michael Ledeen (the American ‘neo-conservative’), Mir-Hossein Mousavi (the Iranian presidential candidate of ‘chagne’) and Adnan Khashoggi (the opulent Saudi Arabian jet-setter) have in common? They are all good friends and associates of Manuchehr Ghorbanifar (an Iranian arms merchant, an alleged MOSSAD double agent, and a key figure in the Iran/Contra Affair, the arms-for-hostages deals between Iran and the Reagan administration). In one or two, at most three, degrees of separation, these people hung out in the same circles and very likely drank to the same toasts…

EXCLUSIVE: Recently Released Gitmo Detainee Talks to ABC News
Held Seven Years, Former Aid Worker Tells ABC News He Was Tortured
By JAKE TAPPER, KAREN TRAVERS, and STEPHANIE Z. SMITH
For 7? years, Lakhdar Boumediene was known simply by a number: “10005.” These were the digits assigned to him when he arrived at the detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, swept up in a post-Sept. 11 dragnet and accused of plotting to blow up the U.S. and British Embassies in Sarajevo. In an exclusive interview with ABC News, Boumediene said the interrogators at Gitmo never once asked him about this alleged plot, which he denied playing any part it. “I’m a normal man,” said Boumediene, who at the time of his arrest worked for the Red Crescent, providing help to orphans and others in need. “I’m not a terrorist.” …

Jewish town in Galilee Demands “Loyalty Oath”
New Bylaw Designed to Bar Arab Couple
Jonathan Cook
A community in northern Israel has changed its bylaws to demand that new residents pledge support for “Zionism, Jewish heritage and settlement of the land” in a thinly veiled attempt to block Arab applicants from gaining admission. Critics are calling the bylaw, adopted by Manof, home to 170 Jewish families in Galilee, a local “loyalty oath” similar to a national scheme recently proposed by the far-Right party of the government minister Avigdor Lieberman. Other Jewish communities in the central Galilee — falling under the umbrella of a regional council known as Misgav — are preparing similar bylaws in response to a court petition filed by an Arab couple hoping to build a home in Misgav…

Among the martyrs
Eva Bartlett, In Gaza
Mohammed points to a pair of shoes and says “there were four of them, my friends and colleagues, sitting on the wall looking out at the sea.” Like Mohammed, the men he mourns worked as policemen along the sea road. “It was during the first strikes, the morning of December 27th,” he recalls. “There were 3 F-16 bombs, all at once. I wasn’t with my friends, I was a little ways away. The blast threw me about 30 m.” He’s a youngish man, mid-20s, and his injuries have healed, unlike so many. “After I was able to get to my feet, I ran towards the spot where they’d been sitting,” he continues. Pointing to the mass of torn concrete and twisted metal, he explains “I couldn’t see anything here, there was so much debris in the air. I ran around, behind the wall.”..

Obama’s Outreach to Muslims: Empty Rhetoric, Same Old Policies
Stephen Lendman
…Obama’s Cairo speech was profoundly disingenuous, much like others past and more recently. He decried the “killing of innocent men, women, and children,” yet US forces slaughter them daily in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, and supply Israel with billions of dollars and the latest weapons and technology to commit slow-motion genocide against millions of Palestinians, deny their legitimate self-determination, and right of their refugees to return home as international law demands. Also, Iraq and Afghanistan remain occupied, the former with unchanged troop levels for the duration if necessary and thousands more for the latter under a new commander, general Stanley McChrystal, known for his brutality as leader of the Pentagon’s infamous Joint Special (death squad) Operations (JSO)…

‘Obama’s peace drive will fail without us,’ says Hamas
Ma’an News
A senior Hamas leader called on the US to open direct talks with his group on Monday, predicting that President Barack Obama’s peace initiative would fail otherwise. Hamas’ exiled deputy political leader, Moussa Abu Marzouk, also told the AP that the group would not renounce violence, a key US condition for talks, which Obama reiterated in his landmark speech in Cairo last week. The Obama administration should change that position, Abu Marzouk told AP, “because they know that without Hamas their efforts will not succeed.”…

Gaza: Four resistance fighters killed in clash with IOF troops
Palestinian Information Center
Four Palestinian resistance fighters were reportedly killed on Monday morning during a clash with an Israeli occupation forces’ unit east of Gaza city, local sources told PIC reporter. The sources said that 10 resistance fighters advanced toward the security fence east of Gaza city, some of whom on horseback, and engaged an IOF military jeep and tried to capture one of the soldiers but the IOF air force was summoned and fired missiles at the fighters killing four of them, whose bodies were maimed beyond recognition, and wounding others…

The Culture of “ No Limit “ – 1
Layla Anwar, An Arab Woman Blues
…American culture is the culture of “no limit” or the “sky is the limit”… In the American mind everything is possible. Nay, everything is achievable… A whole “new age” industry is geared towards that. Schools, training, methods, gurus, teachers…all talk of “the law of attraction”, the “power of thought”, the “secret” “ the law of abundance” and the rest… If you are an American reader, you know what am talking about. I don’t need to explain more… Basically — God, the Universe, Jesus, whatever you wish to call Him/Her/It, is portrayed as one huge gigantic Santa Claus that will rush to fullfill your wishes, your innermost, deepest desires…

The Culture of “ No Limit “ – 2
Layla Anwar, An Arab Woman Blues
…That same “no limit” culture that produces such extravagant mega spirituality geared towards immediate gratification of petty individualistic “needs” also produces its flip side — the immediate gratification of beasts. And as the French proverb goes “ Celui qui fait l’ange, fait la bête.” The one who plays the naive angel is the same one who plays the beast. That kind of sums up America. A naive, almost “angelically” gullible people who at the same time are beasts roaming the earth…in search of more preys…

Iraqi Shiites try to revive sectarian coalition
By HAMZA HENDAWI and QASSIM ABDUL-ZAHRA
Steps are under way to rebuild a coalition of Shiite political parties, a move that would solidify the majority sect’s grip on power but embitter disaffected Sunnis and stoke fears of Iranian influence as the U.S. role here fades. A revived Shiite alliance would be a setback to efforts to end sectarian politics in Iraq. Most Shiite voters will likely vote along sectarian lines as they did in parliament elections in 2005 if the country’s top Shiite cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, publicly endorses the bloc. That would ensure the domination of Iraqi politics by the Shiite religious parties..

HOLOCAUST DENIAL; ZIONIST STYLE

…I am not in the camp of ‘Holocaust Deniers’ after having lost the entire paternal side of my family in the camps. I resent those that are cashing in on the suffering that took place during the last World War. I resent that those that are involved in the ‘Holocaust Industry’ ignore the fact the millions of others suffered as well… it wasn’t only Jews. Those that suffered were not given a ‘green light’ to inflict suffering on others… BUT, that is exactly what the case is in Israel today. Jewish survivors of the Holocaust receive a cheque every month from the German government. Palestinian survivors of the Nakba receive NOTHING from the government of Israel. THAT I find offensive…

When the combat outpost in northwest Baghdad known as Joint Security Station Hurriya 2 closes Sunday, it won’t be a day too soon for the 180 or so U.S. soldiers based there. “There’s not much to do around here, and we go stir-crazy sometimes,” said Army Spc. Obama chooses private profit over healthcare needs
Patrick Martin
President Obama’s Saturday address initiated the public phase of his administration’s effort to pass major healthcare legislation. His remarks were notable for the absence of any reference to the actual crisis facing tens of millions of working people in the United States: more than 47 million people are living without health insurance, and millions more are underinsured and face crippling bills and even bankruptcy in the event of a serious illness. Instead, Obama focused entirely on the rising cost of healthcare, which he presented as a major problem both for the federal government, the largest single payer of healthcare bills, and for corporate America…

Israeli ministry wages settlement war against U.S.
By Mazal Mualem
Interior Minister Eli Yishai on Sunday began to make good on a pledge that he would exploit all the resources of the Interior Ministry, “its branches and its influences over local government” to expand settlements in the territories. Yishai, who is also chairman of Shas, made the promise last Thursday to the heads of the Yesha Council of settlements. His party is concerned by the freeze on construction that has been in effect since Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took office, which Yishai said is “drying out” the settlements. Haaretz has learned that Yishai has instructed officials at the Interior Ministry to come up with ways to help the settlers, by allowing continued construction within the major West Bank settlement blocs where building has stopped as a result of American pressure…

  • NATO spokesman Canadian Brig. Gen. Richard Blanchette says that roadside bombs in Afghanistan have increased about eighty percent from last year.
  • Romania’s 366-strong military contingent ended its deployment in Iraq on Thursday, reducing the U.S.-led coalition to three countries. In Iraq’s north, another U.S. soldier died in combat. The Romanian force was among a handful that has remained in Iraq after the Jan. 1 expiry of the U.N. mandate that governed the presence of the U.S.-led coalition force in Iraq.

Palestinian students call for academic boycott of Israel
Palestinian Students’ Campaign for the Academic Boycott of Israel
The Palestinian Students’ Campaign for the Academic Boycott of Israel (PSCABI) calls upon freedom-loving students all over the world to stand in solidarity with us by boycotting Israeli academic institutions for their complicity in perpetuating Israel’s illegal military occupation and apartheid system. We note the historic action taken by thousands of courageous students of British and American universities in occupying their campuses in a show of solidarity with the brutally oppressed Palestinian people in Gaza. We also deeply appreciate the decision by Hampshire College to divest from companies profiting from the Israeli occupation. Such pressure on Israel is the most likely to contribute to ending its denial of our rights, including the right to education…
