The ever changing story: Anatomy of a typical US military propaganda campaign.
Christopher Dowd
One month later, after the bombings of a village in western Afghanistan that killed up wards of 150 civilians, we now get this half assed admission of culpability on the part of the US military. The US military is now saying that “errors” were made in the air strikes last May 4th that resulted in over a hundred civilian deaths. Oh, they are still claiming that most killed were “Taliban” (what the Pentagon and their pocket poodle American media call anyone who take up arms against the holy selfless Paladins of the US military in Afghanistan. And they are still hinting that this “Taliban” is responsible but this new story, a month later, is in stark contrast to first initial responses of the US military on this bombing- which were, in my opinion, outright lies made up out of whole cloth…

War crimes in Gaza: Palestinian lawyers take on Israel
Juliane von Mittelstaedt | Der Spiegel
Four months after the war in Gaza, Palestinian lawyers have prepared 936 lawsuits against the Israeli military over alleged war crimes. Some of the cases could soon be tried at Spain’s National Court under universal jurisdiction. When Iyad al-Alami wants to survey the fallout of the Gaza war, he simply has to step out of his office and walk up the stairs to the top floor of the building where he works. There, piles of shrapnel, twisted missile shells and massive armor-piercing shells are stored. New material is added every day, filling the boxes that cover the floor and are stacked along the walls. For Al-Alami, the debris is evidence of Israeli army war crimes. He hopes the weapons can be used again — but this time in a courtroom. Al-Alami is the man behind efforts to assemble the biggest ever wave of lawsuits against Israel. He heads the legal department of the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) in Gaza City…

The Taliban will ‘never be defeated’
By Christina Lamb in Rawalpindi, Times
THE Pakistani intelligence agent who trained Mullah Omar, the Taliban leader, to fight has warned that Nato forces will never overpower their enemies in Afghanistan and should talk to them rather than sacrifice more lives. “You can never win the war in Afghanistan,” said so-called “Colonel Imam”, who ran a training programme for the Afghan resistance to the Soviet Union’s occupation from 1979 to 1989, then helped to form the Taliban. “I have worked with these people since the 1970s and I tell you they will never be defeated. Anyone who has come here has got stuck. The more you kill, the more they will expand.”… Imam said he had watched with horror as fighting spread into Pakistan and had been shocked to see his fellow officers having to fight against their own countrymen in the Swat district. “These are not Taliban, they are tribals,” he said. “Mullah Omar told them time and time again not to fight against Pakistan.”…

Gaza Victims Want Justice
IslamOnline.net
The gruesome moment can never go away from Wael al-Samuni’s mind. “They killed our children, our relatives,” the 35-year-old Gazan father told Agence France-Presse (AFP) on Saturday, June 6. “They destroyed our houses. Why? We don’t know.” Samuni lost 29 relatives, including his son, daughter and mother, in a deadly Israeli attack in Gaza in January. “We want to rebuild. As for the dead, may God watch over their souls,” he said from a tent he calls home, filled with whatever belongings he could salvage. The story of the Samuni family is one of the most heart-rending of the hundreds of tragic testimonies that emerged from the deadly Israeli offensive in Gaza…

Israeli settlers dedicate new outpost to Obama
Ghassan Bannoura – IMEMC
In response to US President Barack Obama’s plea to Israel to freeze new settlement construction, extremist Israeli settlers report that they have dramatically increased the number of settlement outposts in the West Bank over the last week, even going so far as dedicating one of the outposts “the Obama hut”…

The Real Meaning of Allowing Guilty Pleas and Death Penalty Without Trial for Alleged 9/11 Plotters
Washington’s Blog
The tin-pot dictator will not let the media talk to the American prisoner captured when his plane crashed. The dictator says that the prisoner confessed to a horrible murder, and has pleaded guilty. And so – the dictator announces – there will be no trial, just a death sentence. Indeed, the prisoner is Christian, and the dictator says that the prisoner has asked for martyrdom according to his religious beliefs. Would the rest of the world believe this is fair? Of course not. Moreover, world opinion would assume that the prisoner might very well be innocent of the murder charges. This is exactly the situation we have currently with the prisoners at Guantanamo…

PCHR: Press Release: Palestinian Security Officer and 2 Members of the ‘Izziddin al-Qassam Brigades Killed in Qalqilya
PCHR – Palestinian Centre for Human Rights
…PCHR regrets these incidents and warns of the danger arising from inflammatory statements issued by both sides. PCHR stress that security services must enforce the law; they cannot be subject to political interference. All security service personnel are required to be neutral, to abstain from making political statements and to be committed to professionalism and independence. PCHR also warns of orders issued by Hamas to its members of resist attempts to arrest them, the latest of which was a statement by Abu ‘Obaida, the spokesman of the ‘Izziddin al-Qassam Bbrigades, that Palestinian civilian security services in the West Bank would be treated like “Israeli Occupation Forces.” PCHR believes that inflammatory statements issued by both sides increase the possibility of the eruption of armed clashes between the two parties, which would hurt innocent civilians and violate human rights…

Obama speech to Muslims “deceptive”, Taliban says
Reuters
The Taliban said on Saturday that U.S. President Barack Obama’s speech to the Muslim world was full of “deceptive slogans” and did nothing to change relations between America and Muslims…”His occupation and transgressing forces continue to kill, torture and arrest Muslims in Afghanistan and Iraq, trample upon their deserved rights with their feet, mercilessly kill them for defending their rights and throw them in the most horrible prisons in the world,” the message added…

Iran Signs Major Gas Deal With China; Is Europe Next?
By Bruce Pannier, RFE/RL
Iran has found its long-sought-after partner to help develop part of the world’s largest natural-gas field, even as the possibility of linking it to a future pipeline to Europe seemed to rise. China came out the big winner on June 3 when representatives from the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) and the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) met in the Chinese capital and signed a $4.7 billion contract for developing Phase 11 of the South Pars gas field…

Perverse ‘Justice’: Suicide By Guilty Plea
Moon of Alabama
Will this become another great perversity by the Obama administration? The Obama administration is considering a change in the law for the military commissions at the prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, that would clear the way for detainees facing the death penalty to plead guilty without a full trial. The provision could permit military prosecutors to avoid airing the details of brutal interrogation techniques. It could also allow the five detainees who have been charged with the Sept. 11 attacks to achieve their stated goal of pleading guilty to gain what they have called martyrdom. The military law forbids death penalties based solely on guilty pleas for two good reasons: * the guilty plea could be coerced * the guilty plea could be way for people who are not guilty to commit a form of suicide…

An East Jerusalem Story
Matt Kennard
I’ve just spent a week sleeping at the houses of the Hannoun family in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of East Jerusalem. Three modest two bedroom bungalows are home to the families of the Hannoun brothers – they are part of 28 homes in the neighborhood, inhabited by over 500 Palestinians. As part of their illegal “Judaization” of East Jerusalem (which is meant to be the future capital of Palestine), the Israelis have told the Hannoun’s, and other families in the area, they will be evicted and their homes destroyed to make way for new Jewish settlers. A brave collection of international activists stay up to the small hours in preparation to document and resist the imminent confiscation of the homes, which is scheduled to take place in the period from now to July 19th…

HOPE FLEET
Free Gaza Movement
The Free Gaza Movement will again challenge Israel’s illegal closure of the Gaza Strip and collective punishment of its civilian population by sailing the HOPE FLEET, a flotilla of passenger and cargo ships, to Gaza at the end of May 2009 – to be followed by freedom riders this summer. We are turning to you, our friends & supporters, to help make Hope come alive. Our small yet committed group has already made five successful voyages to Gaza, delivering needed human rights workers & humanitarian supplies, and helping to lessen Gaza’s terrible isolation from the world. We are confident that with the universal outrage over Israel’s massacres in Gaza, we will be able to send a flotilla of ships to shatter the siege and deliver a message of international hope and solidarity to the people of Palestine…

Obama Abandons Transparency
TalkLeft
Glenn Greenwald writes: Earlier this week, I noted that the Senate had passed — with Obama’s support — a pernicious amendment to the spending supplemental bill, jointly sponsored by Sens. Lindsey Graham and Joe Lieberman, that empowers Obama and the Pentagon, at their sole discretion, to suppress any “photograph taken between September 11, 2001 and January 22, 2009 relating to the treatment of individuals engaged, captured, or detained after September 11, 2001, by the Armed Forces of the United States in operations outside of the United States.” That is bad enough. This is so much worse: The amendment has no purpose other than to expressly allow the President to conceal evidence of war crimes (torture) and to block the Supreme Court from ruling (as two federal courts have already held) that the Freedom of Information Act compels disclosure of those photographs. Blocking Judicial Branch review of Executive Branch actions is simply the tactic of scoundrels. The Obama Administration is acting like scoundrels on this matter. It is despicable and inexcusable…

The Ooze of Piety
Peace Be Upon You?
By MISSY COMLEY BEATTIE
After the obligatory I-am-honored-to-be-here yada yada, President Obama, speaking in Cairo, gave a peace greeting in Arabic: “Assalamu Aleikum.” Perhaps, as these words were heard around the globe, a US drone was incinerating civilians in Pakistan or Afghanistan while a smart bomb, targeting a “terrorist safe house” in Iraq, melted children who were playing soccer. During 55 minutes, the length of Obama’s speech, a hell of a lot of shocks and awes can be unleashed. Certainly, in the amount of time required to call for a “new beginning between the United States and the Muslim world,” a detainee could contemplate suicide—could commit suicide…

Fatah says Hamas arresting its men in Gaza
Reuters
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’s faction accused Hamas Islamists on Saturday of arresting some 150 Fatah activists in Gaza, in apparent retaliation for raids that killed four Hamas men in the West Bank this week. Fahmi al-Zarir, a spokesman for Western-backed Fatah in the occupied West Bank, said Hamas had made the arrests since Friday. He said some men were being held in schools and hotels in the Gaza Strip, territory the Islamists seized in 2007 from Fatah. Hamas officials declined any comment, but a statement posted on Hamas’s Interior Ministry website said “some” Palestinians loyal to Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, a Fatah-backed leader, were arrested as suspected informers for Israel…

U.S. Lawyers Agreed on the Legality of Brutal Tactic
By SCOTT SHANE and DAVID JOHNSTON
When Justice Department lawyers engaged in a sharp internal debate in 2005 over brutal interrogation techniques, even some who believed that using tough tactics was a serious mistake agreed on a basic point: the methods themselves were legal. Previously undisclosed Justice Department e-mail messages, interviews and newly declassified documents show that some of the lawyers, including James B. Comey, the deputy attorney general who argued repeatedly that the United States would regret using harsh methods, went along with a 2005 legal opinion asserting that the techniques used by the Central Intelligence Agency were lawful…

Al Qassam brigades calls on fighters to treat Abbas’ forces the same as Israeli troops
IMEMC News
The Al Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, issued a statement on Thursday calling on all fighters in the West Bank to defend themselves against the security forces of president Mahmoud Abbas, the same way the fighters counter the Israeli occupation. In a press conference in Gaza, Abu Obaida, spokesperson of the Al Qassam, said that the brigades will prevail in the West Bank “in spite of the aggression of the occupation and its tails”, and that if the security forces think that the Al Qassam is vanishing in the West Bank, “they should know we are here, and here we will prevail, God willing”…

JERUSALEM POST: IN DEFENSE OF ISRAELI RACISM
Desertpeace
A bit over a month ago I posted a report about a new Internet based video series, a series that attempts to turn hatred into humour. I personally find nothing at all humourous about hate or racism or war or occupation (the list is unfortunately endless). But, The Jerusalem Post is still attempting to receive the Yellow Journalism Award for 2009. Rather than finding offense with the hateful series itself, the ‘journalist’ who wrote the following piece finds offense with a quote from our Gaza Correspondent, Sameh Habeeb; “These videos are dangerous and full of lies… This type of video will in no case favor reconciliation between Jewish and Arab communities. On the contrary, it can only spawn hate.” …
