Message From Guantanamo: “America is Double Hitler in unjustice”
Winter Patriot
I direct your attention to the following article, dated June 3, 2009, by Michelle Shephard of the Toronto Star: Gitmo protest captured on film WASHINGTON – A Guantanamo Bay detainee committed suicide late Monday just hours after two Chinese Muslim captives staged the detention centre’s first public protest, increasing the pressure on U.S. President Barack Obama to outline his plan of how he will close the offshore prison. Was it really a suicide? No details on which to base a judgment seem to be available, which is par for the course. And as for Obama and “pressure” to “outline his plan”, that’s not all the so-called “suicide” increases, but journalists can only say so much, even if they work in foreign countries…

This is how a Nakba is carried out
The On-going Nakba of the Palestinians: Mission Ethnic Cleansing – Part II
Israel war on Gaza: Share Album – Get Embed Code Reham Alhelsi
…Israel claimed, and still claims that the war of 1967 was a “defensive war”, and that the “existence of Israel was threatened”, despite ample proof contrary to this claim and the many testimonies of some of those responsible for giving orders at the time and some of who participated. Speaking about the “Egyptian threat”, Menachim Begin admitted that: “In June 1967, we again had a choice. The Egyptian army concentrations in the Sinai approaches do not prove that Nasser was really about to attack us. We must be honest with ourselves. We decided to attack him.”…During this so-called “defensive war” of 1967, Israel occupied East Jerusalem, the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, the Golan Heights and Sinai. Of the 1.4 million Palestinians living in the Palestinian Territories before June 1967, some 400,000 were displaced during this second Nakba. Half of those displaced were refugees displaced in the Nakba of 1948. Similar to 1948, there were attacks on civilians, massacres, expulsion, destruction and looting and other atrocities and war crimes. Several villages in the West Bank (including Imwas, Yalu, Beit Niuba, Beit Marsam, Beit Awwa, Jiftlik and Al Burj), several refugee camps in the Jericho area, half of the city of Qalqilya and the whole of the Moghrabi Quarter in the Old City of Jerusalem were depopulated and destroyed…

Obama and Israel: making a mountain out of a mole hill
Olivia Zemor
…And Obama, like Clinton, will he undoubtedly replay the “I did what I could” scene, but the Palestinians made the negotiations fail? How could an outlaw state oblige another outlaw state to act morally? Obama has just raised the US military budget and sent new troops to Afghanistan. Is it really like that, that you take the road to peace and justice? Public opinion is less and less duped. It knows that we can no longer count on our leaders to apply international rights and justice, the right of people to self-determination. this is why it becomes us to demand that Israel account for herself and to consider as pariahs those who pursue that macabre comedy. The campaign to boycott Israel must continue to gain influence in the world…

A Story of Frustration, Anger and Patience
The Meaning of Yasser Arafat
RON JACOBS
Bassam Abu Sharif is a Palestinian fighter, journalist and the current press officer for the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). Originally a member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), he eventually aligned himself with Yasser Arafat and became one of his closest advisors. His recently published narrative titled Arafat and the Dream of Palestine tells of his involvement in the Palestinian struggle focuses primarily on his years as Arafat’s advisor. Part military history and partly political, Sharif details the juncture of these two elements of the Palestinian struggle against occupation while simultaneously detailing his journey from participant and planner of some of the PFLP’s most spectacular military operations to confidant of Arafat. The story is one of a shifting allegiance within the PLO that is based on a changing definition of what Sharif believes possible in terms of Palestinian statehood. It is also one of continuous deception by the Israeli government as it proceeds on its path towards the construction of a Greater Israel and duplicity from supposed allies among the Arab nations…

Scores of unidentified bodies buried in Iraq’s Baaquba
By Husain al-Yaaqobi, Azzaman
Hospital sources in the restive city of Baaquba say they had to bury 50 corpses of Iraqis who were killed in the past two months but they could not identify. The sources said the bodies were collected from across the Province of Diyala of which Baaquba is the capital. “We have buried bodies of 50 victims because no one asked about them and they were mutilated beyond recognition,” one source said. “These are part of the corpses which were brought to us in the past two months,” another source said…

Privatization of ‘Obama’s War’
Michael Winship
… The President asserted in his Cairo speech on Thursday that he has no desire to keep troops or establish permanent military bases in Afghanistan. But according to Jeremy Scahill, “I think what we’re seeing, under President Barack Obama, is sort of old wine in a new bottle. Obama is sending one message to the world,” he told Moyers, “but the reality on the ground, particularly when it comes to private military contractors, is that the status quo remains from the Bush era.”..

Unexploded bombs threaten the reconstruction of Gaza
United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS)
In Gaza explosive remnants of war from Israel’s recent bombardment pose a daily threat to Palestinian civilians and internally displaced persons, and hinder the reconstruction of homes, essential infrastructure and agricultural land. Hundreds of unexploded bombs are believed to be buried in the ruins of over 4,000 buildings which were completely destroyed and more than 11,000 which were partially destroyed during the recent war…

Obama Administration Targets Environmental and Animal Rights Activists as Eco-Terrorists
Stephen Lendman
What began under George Bush continues under Barack Obama – targeting dedicated activists with “one of today’s most serious domestic terrorism threats,” according former FBI Deputy Assistant Director of Counterterrorism John Lewis before a Senate panel in May 2005. Called “eco-terrorism,” it grew out of the 2001 USA Patriot Act that created the federal crime of “domestic terrorism” and applied it to US citizens as well as aliens…

Al Qassam brigades calls on fighters to treat Abbas’ forces the same as Israeli troops
IMEMC News
The Al Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, issued a statement on Thursday calling on all fighters in the West Bank to defend themselves against the security forces of president Mahmoud Abbas, the same way the fighters counter the Israeli occupation. In a press conference in Gaza, Abu Obaida, spokesperson of the Al Qassam, said that the brigades will prevail in the West Bank “in spite of the aggression of the occupation and its tails”, and that if the security forces think that the Al Qassam is vanishing in the West Bank, “they should know we are here, and here we will prevail, God willing”…

Obama in Cairo: a new face for imperialism
Patrick Martin
The speech delivered by US President Barack Obama in Cairo yesterday was riddled with contradictions. He declared his opposition to the “killing of innocent men, women, and children,” but defended the ongoing US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the US proxy war in Pakistan, while remaining silent on the most recent Israeli slaughter of Palestinians in Gaza. These wars have killed at least one million Iraqis and tens of thousands in Afghanistan, Pakistan and the Palestinian territories…While posturing as the advocate of universal peace and understanding, Obama diplomatically omitted any reference to his order to escalate the war in Afghanistan with the dispatch of an additional 17,000 US troops. And he tacitly embraced the policy of his predecessor in Iraq, declaring, “I believe the Iraqi people are ultimately better off without the tyranny of Saddam Hussein.”…

US proxy war continues in north-west Pakistan
By James Cogan
The arrival of Obama administration special envoy Richard Holbrooke in Pakistan on Wednesday serves to underscore that the massive military operation taking place in the country’s north-west is a proxy war on behalf on US imperialism. As part of completing the transformation of Afghanistan into a client-state in Central Asia, Obama is demanding that the Pakistani government suppress the local Islamist movements that lend support to the Afghan resistance over the border. As many as 20,000 Pakistani troops and other security forces are now involved in an offensive to secure the three districts of Pakistan’s North West Frontier Province (NWFP) known as the Malakand Division—Buner, Lower Dir and Swat Valley…

A Blue Black Rock.
Layla Anwar, An Arab Woman Blues
I just have this feeling, that tonight is going to be a very hot night…very, very hot.. I am in a blue(s) and rock mood tonight, so I’m on a roll…and am not quite sure what will hit you, so be warned…if you see what I mean. Been reading a few of the critiques on Obooma’s visit to Saudi Arabia and Egypt…
Tearing his speech apart, dissecting it, pointing out the double standards, the patronizing tone…and I agree, more or less… Those who had a go at him, are mainly “leftist” Arabs, Palestinians and pro- Palestinian “observers”…And even though I have absolutely nothing against having a good go at the U.S. and its official representatives, I am, on the other hand, left rather weary… This “uncomfortable” feeling is bothering me…bothering me to the point of writing a post about a stupid visit, because this what it is, at the end of the day — a propaganda and PR stint stop over…

SA academic study finds that Israel is practicing apartheid and colonialism in the Occupied Palestinian Territories
Human Sciences Research Council of South Africa
The Human Sciences Research Council of South Africa (HSRC) has released a study indicating that Israel is practicing both colonialism and apartheid in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT). The study is being posted for public debate on this website. The interim report, which will form part of a discussion at an upcoming HSRC conference on the subject, titled Re-envisioning Israel/Palestine, on 13 and 14 June in Cape Town, serves as a document to be finalised later this year. The HSRC commissioned an international team of scholars and practitioners of international public law from South Africa, the United Kingdom, Israel and the West Bank to conduct the study. The resulting 300-page draft, titled Occupation, Colonialism, Apartheid?: A re-assessment of Israel’s practices in the occupied Palestinian territories under international law, represents 15 months of research and constitutes an exhaustive review of Israel’s practices in the OPT according to definitions of colonialism and apartheid provided by international law…

Israel’s Indiscriminate Use of Indiscriminate Weapons
Stephen Green
On May 9, Israel announced to the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations in New York that it would release a set of maps showing where cluster munitions had been dropped by the Israeli Defense Forces during the IDF military incursions into South Lebanon in July-August of 2006. There has been some speculation in Washington about the timing of the release, coming as it did two days prior to the arrival in the U.S. of Israel’s new Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for his first official visit, and first “face to face” with President Obama. The near three-year delay in release of the maps has been costly…

Too Obvious To Mention: Obama-Era Lies Protect Bush-Era Crimes
Winter Patriot
…What’s also obvious is that Obama and the Pentagon don’t want to release the photos because of the impact they would have on “the home front”, where we’re the enemy and the ongoing battle is about control of information. But here’s the rub: what would happen if Americans knew a bit more about what went on during the Bush administration? Not much, probably. The usual goons would celebrate a few more “Ay-rabs” “getting what they deserve”, and the rest of us would hang our heads in shame. But fundamentally nothing would change, not only because most of us don’t give a damn, but also because the rest of us have no means by which to change the vicious and corrupt system…

An Iraqi gay group has said it has evidence the Iraqi government is involved with militia groups advocating violence and murder towards gays. In response to US representative Jared Polis, who has spoken out on behalf of gays in Iraq, chargé d’affaires Patricia Butenis said: “We have no evidence that [the Iraq government’s] security forces are in any way involved with these militias.” However, the LGBT group claims it has evidence of the Ministry of Interior Intelligence waging a campaign of murder and violence against gays…

The Upcoming Presidential Elections in Iran
Reza Fiyouzat, Revolutionary Flowerpot Society
Searching for and finding similar instances of political brand making committed in wildly different settings and situations can be instructive. Followers of things Iranian may have noticed a couple of parallels between the campaigns of Iranian presidential candidates for the June 12 elections and those of the U.S. presidential elections past. Most definitely, these are superficial likenesses, but they could also point to deeper parallels. For one, both political systems protect and prolong the rule of an absolute minority. Another deep similarity is that in both political setups, exclusively for the participation of the ruling elites (no matter how many factions they come in), a certain level of ‘democracy’ (meaning here, tolerance) is institutionally allowed/required. Now to the superficial similarities. In these presidential elections, Iranians have a ‘candidate of change’ (yes, literally the same slogan) in the person of Mir-Hossein Mousavi. Now, this is very interesting, since Mir-Hossein Mousavi, currently a member of the ‘reformist’ camp in Iran, was the prime minister (when the post existed) from 1981 to 1989…

A new reader of my blog sent me a link to this website Torturing Democracy. (Thanks E.). I had a look at it, I suggest you do the same. I also watched the trailer, I again suggest you do the same…and I read the transcript for the film, and I intend to buy the DVD – even though it is comparatively “mild”, a “softer” version of what actually happened in reality – but I would still like to keep a hard copy of it, for my documents, for my files, for the “historical record”, albeit an ongoing one…

Iraq’s Baath Party Denies Links to Al Qaeda

The Iraqi Baath party denied in an Internet statement having any links to al Qaeda following rumors that some of the brutal operations undertaken by the group were carried out in cooperation with the Baath party. “Our party has never had any relation with what’s known as al Qaeda, not before the occupation nor after,” the statement said. “As a matter of fact, many of our men and cadres have been victims of assassinations and kidnappings carried out by this group because of their rejection of the sectarian ideology that was introduced to Iraq upon the advent of the occupation,” it added…

Hamas Leader to Obama: Deeds, Not Words
By Helena Cobban*
The head of Hamas’s political bureau, Khaled Meshaal, gave a qualified welcome here Thursday to the big speech that Pres. Barack Obama addressed to the Muslim world in Cairo. “The speech was cleverly written in the way it addressed the Muslim world… and in the way it showed respect to the Muslim heritage,” Meshaal told IPS in an exclusive interview. “But I think it’s not enough. What’s needed are deeds, actions on the ground, and a change of policies.” His remarks came just hours after the speech, in a wide-ranging interview in one of the Hamas leader’s offices here in the Syrian capital…
