Slaughtering Iraq’s Minorities.
Layla Anwar, An Arab Woman Blues
I don’t think you have read this in any of your news outlet. Someone jumping from the 10th floor in some dump in Indianapolis is more important than the slaughter of the minorities in Iraq, in particular the Christians of Iraq whom you generously came to “liberate” along with others… Two days ago in Baghdad, a Sabaen/Mandaen family was murdered in broad daylight. Their only crime was their religion. Yesterday, 5 Chaldeans from Kirkuk were murdered in cold blood. They belonged to two families. They were just sitting at home, trying to keep safe. The names I was able to memorize are : Bassem, Mona and Suzanne. The Chaldean Archbishop, Louis Zako issued a plea for the world to save the Christians of Iraq from murder (…) The Christian population of Iraq has dwindled from 2 Million or so, to less than 600'000. The Chaldeans were the first to embrace Christianity in the Middle East. Their history dates back to Babylonian times and some say they were the ones who built the tower of Babel. Their language is still Aramaic. The Assyrians, another ancient minority, came about a 100 years after the Chaldeans. They too embraced Christianity. Both Chaldeans and Assyrians are one of the oldest, most ancient communities in the Middle East. They are the first surviving inhabitants/communities of this land. They are Iraq. Iraq is not Iraq without them. During the reign of the “tyrant”, they and other minorities were the most protected and safeguarded. Millions of Dollars were offered to the C! hristian s of Iraq to build new churches, and they were allowed to practice their faith in all freedom. Ditto for the other smaller minorities…It took “Christian” America, the “Christian” West, to obliterate the oldest living people in the Middle East. I wonder what Jesus Christ has to say about that ?..

Pinter to Obama: “Smash the mirror”
By Mike Whitney
About a month before Barack Obama announced his candidacy for the presidency of the United States, former National Security Adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski appeared on PBS’s Charlie Rose Show and was asked whether he thought Obama would be a good choice for president. Brzezinski paused for a minute, peered at Rose out of the corner of his eye, and answered, “Just think of the symbolism.” As soon as he said that, Brzezinski and Rose broke out into laughter as though they were sharing a private joke. Brzezinski was right, of course. Obama was the perfect choice for president. Not because of his experience. He had none. He was a two year senator with a resume’ small enough to fit on the back of a matchbox. Still Obama had what Brzezinski and Co. were looking for, symbolism; the kind of symbolism that connected him to people around the world and made them feel like one of their own had finally clawed their way to the top. Even better, Obama was a charismatic populist who could fill stadiums with adoring fans and put a benign face on America’s interventions in Afghanistan and Iraq. What more could Brzezinski hope for? …

The Picture of Dorian Gray
Obama’s Iraq
By JEREMY SCAHILL
Remember when Barack Obama made that big announcement at Camp Lejeune about how all US combat troops were going to be withdrawn from Iraqi cities by June 30? Liberals jumped around with joy, praising Obama for ending the war so that they could focus on their “good war” in Afghanistan. Of course, the celebrations were and remain unwarranted. Obama’s Iraq plan is virtually identical to the one on Bush’s table on January 19, 2009. Obama has just rebranded the occupation, sold it to liberals and dropped the term “Global War on Terror” while, for all practical purposes, continuing the Bush era policy (that’s why leading Republicans praised Obama’s plan). In the real world, US military commanders have said they are preparing for an Iraq presence for another 15-20 years, the US embassy is the size of Vatican City, there is no official plan for the withdrawal of contractors and new corporate mercenary contracts are being awarded…

Further evidence of huge Iraqi death toll
James Cogan
…Based on the results of previous studies, a new, well-resourced cluster sample survey—including interviews in previously inaccessible areas and among the refugee population—would in all likelihood arrive at the conclusion that the illegal US invasion and occupation of Iraq has cost well over one million Iraqi lives during the past six years. On May 24, 2007, the WSWS editorial board published a statement entitled “US officials guilty of ‘sociocide’ in Iraq must be held accountable”. It indicted the senior personnel of the Bush White House and American corporate establishment as “guilty of preparing, encouraging or carrying out war crimes” and called for them to be held to account. The statement concluded: “As we have explained before, this is not a matter of vengeance, but the political education of the population as a whole. The process by which these bloody crimes against foreign peoples are set in motion, as well as their true geopolitical driving forces, needs to be exposed in full view of masses of people. Only when the population understands the character of such wars, sees through the lies of the establishment and takes political matters into its own hands will the mad war drive of American imperialism be halted.” With the Obama administration continuing the war in Iraq and escalating US military violence in Afghanistan, this assessment is just as applicable to the new occupant of the White House and the administration members and corporate backers who surround him…

The New American Century Has Not Been Cancelled
Steve Hynd
Anyone who thought the neoconservative project for a new American hegemony was finally cancelled when Obama came to power, promising to change Bush’s failed course in Iraq and Afghanistan, has by now had their hopes dashed. The Obama administration has proven itself just as inclined to interventionism and picking up the White Man’s Burden as Dubya ever was, albeit with a less coarse and selfish face. Obama has proven his neoliberal credentials with his strategy for escalation in Afghanistan: a decade-or-two continuation and expansion of Bush’s policy there which has no direction, no benchmarks, no clearly defined end-point, no exit ramps and no truth-telling about the costs…

If Only They Could See
Mohammed Omer
Mohammed Al-Sheikh Yousef could save his eyesight if only he could cross the border out of Gaza. He was denied a permit by Israel; he got one from Egypt, but not for someone to accompany him. And he can’t go on his own because he cannot see very well. “If Mohammed does not get out of Gaza for medical treatment within the next 14 days, he may totally lose his eyesight and be blind for life,” Dr. Mawia Hasaneen, head of the ambulance and emergency service for Gaza hospitals told IPS in a telephone interview. “In the past few weeks we have received 150 appeals from people in Gaza who are in need of urgent medical care,” says Ran Yaron from Physicians for Human Rights, a human rights group in Israel that campaigns on behalf of Palestinian patients to obtain exit permits for healthcare…

Balkanising the Balkans: Is Serbia on the Chopping Block Again?
by Mike Celik
…If there is any analogy worthy our consideration in the dismembering of Yugoslavia and Serbia in particular, it is the Nazi and the Second World War analogy. As Yugoslavia’s largest ethnic group, the Serbs must be neutralized and deprived of independent livelihood if any foreign domination is to become effective. In order to advance its expansionist policies, NATO has revived and resuscitated old Nazi Balkan politics and hatreds against the Serbs. Shortly before the bombing of Yugoslavia was to commence, a NATO general was reminded of Germany’s quagmire in the Balkans where 48 German divisions were needed to pacify the region. His answer was that NATO will not make Hitler’s mistake…

Against Prosecution (II): Concerning the State, the Law, and Show Trials
Arthur Silber
…Torture is a monstrous evil that is never justified. My objection to show trials concerning torture is not that these are not crimes, or that these acts are not evil. Instead, my objection is that, as monumental an evil as torture is, it is not the first evil, or the greatest one. The all-encompassing evil, the evil that is the bedrock on which a series of additional evils, including torture, has been erected is the system of governance involved and the nature of the State at issue: a corporatist-authoritarian-militarist State, one devoted to the expanding regulatory-surveillance State at home and to an unending series of aggressive interventions abroad. That is the evil that must be recognized and, if at all possible, rectified or minimized, if the series of evils and the unending path of destruction and death are to be ended…

Gaza & Zionism
Marcy Newman, body on the line
Dr. Mads Gilbert was on grit tv with Laura Flanders this week. The interview is excellent on a number of levels–for his specificity about war crimes he witnessed by Israeli terrorists while working in al Shifa hospital in Gaza, for his analysis of the situation on the political level. I can never get enough listening to him speak. One of the points he raises here is in relation to the fact that during world war ii so little of the world did anything to stop nazi germany even while they knew what was happening and he links this to the world watching and refusing to intervene in the massacres in Gaza..

56% in FATA see Afghan Taliban as ‘heroes’: survey
Daily Times
Exactly 56 percent respondents described Afghanistan’s Taliban as “Islamic heroes fighting western occupation” in a survey conducted by Community Appraisal and Motivation Programme (CAMP) with the help of the British High Commission in Islamabad. A paltry 12.1 percent called them “a terrorist group”. More than 54 percent respondents said they were “dissatisfied with life” in FATA in general. The number of satisfied people stood at 18.15 percent, according to the survey, and 17.5 percent said they were neither satisfied nor dissatisfied…

US allies in ‘rivalry’ with Iran
Adla Massoud, Aljazeera
Vali Nasr, an Iranian-American academic, is serving as senior adviser to Richard Holbrooke, the US special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan. A professor of International Politics at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, Nasr is best known for his work on Iran and Sunni-Shia tensions in the Middle East. In a videotaped appeal in March, Barack Obama, the US president offered a “new beginning” in US-Iranian relations, calling for renewed exchanges and greater partnership. Iranian officials said action was needed to repair the relationship, but welcomed his words. Here, Nasr talks to Al Jazeera about Obama’s overtures to Tehran and increasing tension between some Arab states and Hezbollah ahead of crucial elections in Iran and Lebanon…

US interpreter who witnessed torture in Iraq shot herself with service rifle
David Randall
It is possible that one of the victims of the United States’ torture policy is a young, devout Mormon woman from Arizona called Alyssa Peterson. She was a soldier who not only saw the rough interrogation methods that the US military used on Iraqi prisoners, but was deeply troubled by them. Some weeks after formally protesting about them to her superiors, and asking to be reassigned, she took her gun and killed herself. The cause of her death was kept secret for two years, and the mystery of what Peterson witnessed, and the content of the notes she made, still goes on…

The Islamic Army in Iraq/ denouncing the crime of targeting the mosques
Islamic Army in Iraq
…Once again the criminals insist on causing corruption on the ground, reaching out with their injustice and extremism by targeting the mosques of Allah the Almighty at the prayer time. From here comes the crime of targeting Al-kulafah mosque in Duluiyah with its worshippers and Qurans by a suicide bomber, which resulted in the killing of five worshippers and injuring dozens one of whom is a preacher for the area in particular and Iraq in general. As The Islamic army in Iraq denounces such a crime it also calls upon all the truthful mujahdeen to stick to the commitment of the manners of Jihad as shown by Allah the Almighty in his book and confirmed by the prophet (PBUH) in his battles and his orders to the leaders of the Islamic conquest…

Why Do You Kill?: A former German Parliament Member Speaks on the Iraqi Resistance
Christian Avard
…The importance of al-Qaeda is marginal, but the Pentagon says all the attacks are because of al-Qaeda. I’ve had several discussions with resistance leaders and one could say there are 100,000 resistance fighters and 1,000 to 2,000 al-Qaeda right now. Now with the recent attacks in Mosul, there’s a big chance the Pentagon will say al-Qaeda is responsible because they need to justify their war. I try to tell the story about Zaid, his family, and all the other Iraqis. I don’t say I’m the only one who knows the truth, but I know how it feels on the Iraqi side to be occupied by a western country…

GAZA: Efforts to track communicable diseases in Gaza
IRIN news
UN agencies and the health ministry in Gaza are working to strengthen communicable disease surveillance systems in Gaza, in light of the fact that leaking sewage may be contaminating drinking water. The fragile water and sewage network was damaged during the recent 23-day Israeli offensive in Gaza, increasing public health risks, according to a recent report by the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) cluster, entitled A Brief Outline of the Sewage Infrastructure and Public Health Risks in the Gaza Strip for the World Health Organization (WHO)…

Situation of children in Gaza remains precarious 100 days after end of conflict
UNICEF
More than three months after the cessation of hostilities in Gaza, the Israeli blockade and inter-Palestinian tension are hampering recovery efforts. “Although the conflict ended 100 days ago, children in Gaza continue to suffer, both physically and psychologically,” said Patricia McPhillips, UNICEF Special Representative to the occupied Palestinian territory. “It is critical that supplies and materials needed for recovery and rehabilitation are allowed in.” Ten per cent of the population in Gaza remains without electricity and nine per cent with little access to safe water…

The issue of Racism between Zionism and the Apartheid ideology
Salim Nazzal
This is a quick and generalized paper, which gives evidences of which might explain why the Zionist regime has been more capable of resisting the pressures of the culture of human rights and self determination while the apartheid regimes have vanished. Despite the similarities between the white Racist regime, in earlier South Africa and those of the Zionist regime, in terms of the oppressive policy against the natives, there are seven major differences: the first, white Europeans immigrated to Africa without a prior plan to the country and to the natives. Their immigration was rather spontaneous, guided by wide colonial thought rather than of a well theorized racist ideology decided from before. The construction of the racist regime was done through a process in the history of their domination there. Zionists arrived in Palestine from day one armed with comprehensible ideology, unambiguous policy, from which its aims were to transfer Palestinians…

Up to one million displaced in northwest Pakistan
The Pakistani Newspaper
Up to one million people are displaced in northwestern Pakistan where militants are feeding on local discontent and strife, humanitarian and local officials from Pakistan warned on Tuesday. Officials from Pakistan’s North West Frontier Province appealed for international relief aid at an unprecedented meeting with relief agencies and donor countries in Geneva. ‘We are hearing a lot of pledges and promises made from the international community to Pakistan, and many of them are for security, for the police and the army, but the civilians are not getting what they are supposed to,’ said Sitara Ayaz, minister for social welfare and development in the province…

The Palestinian national dialogue session between Hamas and Fatah has been delayed until mid-May, Reuters reported on Tuesday. The talks had started on Monday, but on Tuesday it was announced that the parties will break to examine new Egyptian proposals on a range of controversial topics. Senior Hamas leader and negotiator Mahmoud Zahhar said on Tuesday that talks would resume either 16 or 17 May. He told Reuters that the dialogue session “has been postponed in order for both delegations to go back to their leadership and discuss Egyptian suggestions and ideas.”..

SIXTY ONE YEARS OF ISRAELI (IN)DEPENDENCE
Desertpeace
At sundown tonight Israelis will mark the 61st anniversary of the founding funding of their state. Often we hear university students living away from home referring to their parents as ‘the rents’. Why? Simply because it is usually the parents that foot the bill for their accommodations. In many cases the students themselves could not make it on their own. So is the case with Israel, they have been funded from abroad for the past 61 years. They have never attempted to even try making it on their own. From day one they have stolen, lied, and killed to maintain what they call their own. From day one their supporters were aware of this but continued to pour in billions of dollars annually…
